Only found out recently that the modern three-point safety belt was perfected by Volvo engineer Nils Bohlin in 1959. They did not patent it to allow use by all other car manufacturers.
Like the look of this thanks for reviewing 👍 We sold a Q3 and bought a golf but now thinking of getting back to a taller SUV. The VW Tiguan is nice, a E pace looks great but this Volvo review was excellent. Need a rethink now 😂
Had one for 3 years. On the plus side, lovely to drive, it’s comfy, it’s got lots of tech. Negatives, the central display screen is not easy to use and the voice command system drives me mental. Recent example while driving along the A303: Voice command: Phone Tom System gives me directions to nearby restaurant in Wiltshire. Voice command: End System starts ringing said restaurant. Voice command: WTF!!! Followed by manual disconnect. It may be my Essex accent, but other brands that I’ve had seem to understand me ok😀
From the learning facility in all voice command systems, it's better to spend some time giving basic commands that you will tend to use often when you are stationary and without chatter/radio/wind noise. Then when you use the same commands while driving, the system should recognise your unique voice characteristics more easily.
I had one on previous engine lineup, with about 260 bhp combined, I can't remember the model designation, T5 AWD , "Inspiration" think? in Denim blue and light interior, it felt pretty classy, Volvo has some good colourways. Apart from franticly rapid point acceleration, a flawed powertrain overall, in lots of small ways, unsurprising its gone, i'm sure it gets about nicely enough with quite bit less bhp. The packaging and design were great though, better than the cramped in the back Evoque, even so for me a bit more boot space and a smidgen more legroom, would have been welcomed for holidays and filling it with ones bigger friends, it was far from a deal breaker though, with some roof storage I could make it work for us.
Nice review on this one. Our family Toyota CHR is coming to the end of it's lease in March, so we've ordered an XC40 B4 dark plus model as it ticked all the boxes, can't wait to drive it!
@@jonharry6293 thanks for the heads up. Yes, that was my only snag on this model as it's predominately petrol / 'mild' hybrid, compared to the CHR's full hybrid system which gives better mpg overall. I've only got the XC40 on lease for 3 years so we'll see how we go. It'll mainly be used 80% of the time for the school-run and local trip driving.
On our 3rd XC90, I test other brands when we change cars and it's Volvo I return to. There's a reason for that, we do +/-35,000 miles per year and I want to do those in the most comfortable and safe vehicle available. Yes they're pricey but given that I transport my most valuable commodities around in it I don't think it's too big a price to pay!
As a B4 owner and Android owner.. I can say that Volvo's XC40 range does not come with Android-Auto. Only Apple CarPlay. But the infotainment system is an Android system in itself as stated.
Haha Great review! You pretty much concluded as other top reviewers did, which is a very good thing to hear. Ive just part ex'd my 2018 Audi S3 for a 2024 'Sage Green' Ultimate B3 and collecting it next week, sadly half the BHP but the good thing is the space in the back for all my trackday gear and it does look classy. Cheers 👍🏻
It did when we got our Plus model in May 2023. They were supplying it in place of the BLIS blind spot alert module because they couldn't get the chips for it. It could be that the test model was built during that shortage. It's a 23 plate same as ours.
@@jcrosby8357 the 360 camera is a £560 option if you take the Plus trim now in the UK. Confirmed by Volvo dealer. Test driving Black Edition B4 Plus this week. Looks a cool car. I'm currently in an X1 Msport.
I think the AWD was a B5 model, and does not appear to be on their new catalogue any longer (end 2024 & 2025 stock). There was talk of all new models being AWD, however B3, B4 & Full hybrid are the only current new models available (I'm eagerly awaiting delivery of a B4 ultimate).
Ours is about 18 months old. You get a few glitches, particularly around media sound after software updates, but aside from that it's a cracking car to own and drive
Impressive but seems awful pricey certainly here in Ireland.. The kia Sportage ticks pretty much all the boxes with what this Volvo has except the panoramic roof which dosen't seem to be included in any trim diesel or hybrid/plug in hybrid but has a bigger boot. HEV model in the Sportage is priced at €45995 and MHEV is priced at €48995 which is €10000 cheaper that the XC40 Core which is the entry model price for this Volvo.
Shame about the crazy fuel consumption… love the car otherwise. Great seating position, comfortable, compact (yet feels spacious) but the driver console shape is looking very dated now compared to others on the market. Suspension is also great on bumps BUT the fuel is ❌
I moved to the XC40 from a car with heater buttons and after 2 XC40's and over 5 years, using the centre screen or voice control to change heating is pretty much 2nd nature now and certainly not an issue. I'm afraid nearly all new cars are doing away with the majority of buttons etc and using touch screens to control everything. It's a cost thing as its cheaper, reduces wiring etc and allows for over the air updates to improve things.
The Volvo has the best waftability compared to its rivals. It’s the better traveler’s car of the bunch. Not so much better driver’s car. If that is what you’re after get a BMW or Audi. For the lack of quality and reliability compared to the Volvo, Beamer or Audi I wouldn’t even consider an Evoque.
I have had my XC40 inscription nearly four years brilliant vehicle on the whole mine is petrol 2.0 turbo.I normal swap my cars every two years my dilemma is simple don't want zn EV or a hybrid now looking for something else shame.❤

Just ordered one to replace my 3yr old Q3, I'm sure it'll be fine. Thanks for the review 😊
The Volvo is understated and classy. The Evoque is brash and flashy.
It is always nice to watch Rebecca reviews.
Brilliant car
Volvo were ALWAYS smart and sophisticated.
Yep...and also unreliable.

Have a look at the SEAT Ateca as well
Had an XC60 for 3 months, wife loves it that much she's thinking of getting the XC40 for herself
I decided to buy my Volvo XC40 after watching this video. Thanks for the great review.
I'm in the US and we'll pickup my new XC40 in Gothenburg at the end of June. So cant wait!
I feel lucky to drive a car now with twisty knobs and buttons. What a time to be alive.

2023 facelifted one now runs a completely different underlying system on the central display so voice recognition is somewhat improved

My T4 has replaced a 10 year old Q3 with 230k on the clock which I bought new - hoping for the same experience!!
that screen works well, I was hesitant to give up buttons but now I've got used to it I think other cars look cluttered

I’ve just ordered in the same colour, do you have any regrets? Haven’t seen many on the road in sage.
Currently have onyx black
What’s the point if hybrid to get mid 30’s mpg, that’s just a bit more than a two ton pickup on all terrain tyres. A VW suv does 40 on petrol alone.
Used to like these but the centre screen looks dated now
It is a pity one cant flip video horizontally to look normal :)
The Plus spec does not have a 360 camera. Just a reversing camera.

There’s a couple in the works car park and they are definitely longer than my golf.
A SUV with a better view is really good. As long as another SUV isn't in front of you 😂😂😂
Just bought the B4 here in Australia, 2024 model. Nice premium car. A few irritating niggles to do with tech. Otherwise lovely to own and drive...

Volvo are the choice of many UK police forces since BMW withdrew.
It reminds me on Mazda cx5 , older model..
I’m on my 3rd. Really great car to own. Getting mid 40’s mpg. Mild hybrid.
What kind of driving do you do? I heard it's very thirsty around town
Mostly country and town. No motorway. Always getting upwards of 45. I guess it also depends on your driving style.
@@rogerhowgego2679 thanks, sounds similar to what I’d be doing and currently sit at mid 30s mpg in my X1
Pleasure to help. All the best Nofinator.
I was not ready to see knickers in an XC40 review
What is colour called please?
Does anyone know if the plus comes with heated steering wheel?
Here in Belgium yes
Shame they don't do a diesel anymore and no proper knobs and dials is a big negative
Volvo pure class 👏
Reliability of the Volvo is much better as that of the Evoque
Great car
Moved again

Good car but too expensive especially the hybrid version which has low range. Had one but sold it as uneconomic in long run.
The centre screen really looks dated.
Did I blink and miss the price??
No estimated price range quoted. ICE circa £35k+ EV get a mortgage and watch the value depreciate after 5 minutes! Other prices are available!
Hard to value to review when told its fwd only when they come in 4wd also. What other info is incorrect?
Missed the Lexus UX.
No proper heater controls is an irritating deal breaker.

Best Volvos: estates and saloons. These things are okay, but shame that Volvo caved to the SUV bandwagon.
Yeah, I'll miss the big (BIG) estates! -Tim
Not as much they caved more that these massively outsell saloons/estates. Same as Puma outselling Fiesta
They are considering relaunching some of their saloon & estate models again in 2025 - according to my local dealer.
Cool and funky! Not in a million years!
Terrible on fuel economy

Hey 5ft 4 and a half, no Banana ?😢 😊
Even better, buy a Mazda CX5, Honda CRV or Toyota RAV4, they are all much better than any of the Range Rover/ Land Rover models or the Volvo.
Not in the same class as a Range Rover

I would buy one for that reason alone.
