How To Assemble an Engine Block
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 1 авг 2024
- Putting together an engine block means installing pistons, a crank shaft, and bearings. Today we will also be installing piston rings, and all new bearings on the bottom end of a VR6 engine. Assembling an engine block is also much easier if you have all the proper engine assembly tools.

I really appreciate the pace and tone you have here. In technical professions there is a tendency to keep others out by maintaining that the work is too complex for anyone but the pros.
You don't use excessive jargon, or waste time qualifying who this information is for. You don't harp on the basics, nor leave them out. Just explaining what to do and what works for you, and treating the viewer like an adult. This is the first time opening up the block has seemed like something I could do. Like everything else, there's no magic, it just takes time, focus, and patience (and usually tools and a few mistakes).
Thanks man.
Wow thanks so much for the comment! Means the world.
Yea people make it seem like engine building is like rocket surgery. It’s not.
Absolutely right.
Started watching your channel a few years back when I was dreaming about being a technician. Just finished my second week as a vw technician apprentice :) thanks for all the helpful advice
Hey dude! I’m beginning school to be a technician. How do I become a VW tech apprentice? Do you think VW dealer would hire me while I’m in school?
Holy shit, living the dream.
the main time I was around engines was when I was growing up with my father. I can't comprehend watching you do it and everything is clean and working and there is no yelling and swearing. It's not what I'm used to...
great video. videos like this are what empower people to take these things on in their garage, who knows, that may bring someone into the automotive field who other wise would not have gotten interested in it.
being an electrical only guy this type of stuff was totally out of my wheel house. my first engine build last year i chose to use this super expensive assembly lube instead of oil (which is what most guys said i should use). im very glad i did as it took me a week of troubleshooting and a solid 3 minutes of cranking across that week before i had oil flow. i have no doubt oil alone would have caused major damage. i made a few mistakes while assembling - i realized after the fact. now 6K miles later i guess the mistakes wern't major. at 520K miles at time of rebuild i had to machine/bore/fire ring all the things...
Excellent quality work! My 14 yr old is starting Eli Whitney Tech here in CT and him I just rebuilt a 1980 CB750 engine! He was excited, deeply interested and full of questions I couldn't answer LOL! So he'll love the level of details it takes to respect this profession! I've got to sub to you! Thanks for the vid 👍👍🔧🔧🔩🔩
Thanks for watching. I am off to put more parts on this engine. I will have a full update video out soon!
Would you ever work on a TDi engine? Also great content keep up the good work
+Diego Ace thanks. I've worked on tons of TDIs over the years.
your video scare me doing my engine :/
Joseph V. Stalin most pistons are parallel to the deck. idk much about vr engines but by the look of it that must be how they sit. you want to load your pistons in the correct orientation and avoid turning them as much as possible so the ring gaps don't move
where can I get all the parts?
awesome video!!
Been using your videos to get an edge up on the competition in Automotive school, love the format of your videos, they are so easy to follow!
Thanks you for this walk through I have the afp engine that I just took out and it has scored pistons and the valves where bent as well. Took the head to the shop but most ppl aren’t willing to clean the bottom half even if it was just for a hot tank. This really puts my mind at ease and I’m prepared for the next step.
This video may be for a VR6 engine, but is incredibly helpful for a 1.9 Diesel BEW. Different engine, same process, thanks for all the helpful engine build videos!
Thank you!!!
I am in Aviation Maintenance school right now and this video brings back SOO many memories of overhaul class. Literally everything you did we had to do and if the engine didn't work for some reason we failed the class. Talk about pressure! Lol But you sir, have got to be one of the best mechanics I've ever seen. :)
For real bro, I was a little confused that he said not using the ring tool is better, but I guess that's cause we use cast iron and he uses steel lol.
Aviation maintenance? God bless you, I dont have the nerve to work on aircraft
Same 😁
Very educative video have subscribed to a lot of blogs and I think I need to cut down to 1 or 2 now. And surely with that way of explaining your number 1.
I will follow a lot of your work to further educate myself, because I'm new into the industry and you just made it easy and I find your work very friendly. Thank you
Somehow I feel like learning how to do this as your narration get into my mind. I watched the entire video. I guess you are a good teacher.
I'm currently building my BEW TDI engine, this video helped alot. Thanks
so satisying to see things come back together perfectly
Agree. Sadly it wasn't a perfect adventure. I broke 2 oil control rings during assembly. A video for a different day
I build mostly twin 2 strokes, same concept...clean clean clean. Great video.
Really miss that lab Charles, I had a good experience whilst I was there. English doesn't have words for the sentimental value and the world of knowledge and experience I gained as a student at NASCAR technical institute.
Watching your videos inspired me to get the job I'm at now! I also live in GA! Great video!
Jiffylube
Briar H not close, two tuning shops. One specializes in Cup Spec Porsches, the other is more jdm, gtr stuff.
ThatCarGuy so jiffylube/Autozone gotcha
Jay Bisky sure lol
I'm actually just getting off work I did interior work today and it turned out fantastic, the more videos you put out the better my skills get thank you for the videos you put out I'm very thankful
AWESOME!!!!
nice
This was awesome! Thanks bro! Ive never disassembled an engine or head i know what components are what and how they function. But this was just cool to watch. I am as meticulous as you are.
Great video Charles 👍. Love the stress on cleaning everything at each stage of assembly. I don't know how many people I've seen have a messy work area and not really bothering to take the time to clean surfaces, only to down the road scratch their head wondering why things are either leaking or breaking. Another practice I've gotten into is chasing out threads especially on critical areas like head bolts , I've also seen people not do that and snap off TTY bolts because of crud being in the threads or in the bottom of the bolt hole.
A J S after machining how does one clean out all the oil passages? I would think if the cylinders are dirty after machining that all the passages would be worse.
1.55am
Guess I'm not sleeping for another 14 mins then 😂
LOL Who needs sleep anyway
You unless you want to screw up the engine your building.
It was exactly 155 am when I seen this comment
1:48 am
2:06 am atm
Excellent assembly! You really love engines! Keep going!
This video showed me so much. Awesome content HumbledMechanic! Let's humble our way to the top!
I’ll probably never take apart an engine, but I really enjoyed watching. Very well done. Thanks!
I went to Nascar technical institute. Always enjoy going back.
What a detailed video! I love marvel msytery, i had a door lock cylinder on my vw beetle 2004 and it wont not turn, it was completly siezed. I took it out with the 12 turn revolution as you demonstrate and soak it in a cup of mmo and it works better than new.
Great video love watching engine builds
Your audio has gotten so much better.
This is so interesting!!!!! Thank you for showing this! I have a 2008 Audi A8L W12 and i want to take it to a shop and i want to see a part of the process
Came across you because you was on another channel talking turbod and as I'm wanting to do my golf engine that's blown into a turbo once it's rebuilt, thought I'd have a look. Great channel, by far the most informative and helpful channel I've ever found. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge and I look forward to more videos!
Simon Sheldrick thank you so much.
Very nice video! I'm gonna watch more of that VR6 series for sure
Super helpful for someone who hasn't taken one apart yet!
Fascinating, Captain - great methodology as usual 👍 🖖
Quality watch, easily explained and precise👍
Good job with good explanation. The video clips is also clear. Thank so much
Thank you for the awesome content Charles!!!
This was a great video even though il probably never touch a vw in my life haha. You are a pretty great talker. Even though you aren't one of those guys who drops humor in every 10 seconds its still very entertaining.
HAHAHA I am not very funny. .:)
I’m 16 and don’t even own a vehicle, however I watch stuff like this for when I do have one. Videos ain’t gonna make me a mechanic but I believe it may help me understand what’s wrong with any vehicle I do get.
Very interesting to see an engine build ...nice job
Proper tools make a night and day difference!
It's true! I will be buying the ring tool the next time I do this on a VR
I like the process it has helped me to up my skills in this field
Great video
I wish guys like you made whole engine building courses
clean clean clean, it's impossible to be too clean! :)
as long as you lube after
Love all of your videos but this one is completely over the top awesome! Absolute information dump. In a very good way. Thank you!
Thanks so much :)
Another epic tutorial. Thanks dude! Awesome!
Nice video. Thanks for sharing. If I may add a few comments, do not turn the crank without the caps torqued, when torquing the cap bolts on the final stage, do not stop in the middle of the torque down process. Keep the torque wrench moving until the spec is reached.
Wow Wow l enjoyed the video although I am not mechanic l learn a lot great one God bless you, keep on doing great job.
@HumbleMechanic thanks for the video and love your engine teardown and rebuild, you make it look easy.
So professional bro!
Hmmm I never thought to size up the rings by just sticking them down in the cylinder.
Great video!
loved this! thanks Humble Mechanic! subbed
this is great. thanks for the details!
So sad that I didn’t discover your channel sooner, it would have save me tons of stress 😂
A+ on cleanliness.
Thanks for the video ,it helped a lot.
Wow nice professional work thanks for sharing
Great video, thanks for the tips!
Nice type of video, love timelapse + voice explaining everything! Nice work
I think I will never do a job like this, or even see the interior of an engine, but I love watching this videos... :D
Excellent video. Deserves more views.
You prob don't remember but in February you went to the lab at nti with 3 other gentlemen from Audi/VW I was the only student with Mr Wolfe at the time and was going into BMW step, I'm starting at Leith BMW (I recognize that checkered floor) and you also have that visitor pass. Crazy I watched your videos way before we met too. Small world.
+Rob yep I totally remember.
Congrats man. I worked for leith for 13 years!
You're a genius man 💯🙌
Excellent job.
Really enjoyed this video.
Thank you
Amazing video, very clear instructions and good quality video very easy to understand 👍🏻
Thanks
Mechanic collage course in 14 mins :)
I have no business here but I watched the whole thing 😅
Thanks :)
lol
Me too :)
Don’t you have motor?? Well every one should have that knowledge and learn from it. Nothing wrong with that
Everyone's welcome in the shop until you do something stupid.
Wonderful video!
Nice job
Outstanding work!
Thanks :)
thanks for the video it is so helpful to me
Love this video, and I even don't what a VR6 is!
nice job can't wait to hear it fire up.
Oh me too. SO pumped
Thank you for this video. Very informative. I have an ABF clone that's in the process of being built. I'm going to be tearing into the block and rebuilding the block. This video will help me out on what to do on an engine build.
Howdy HM. Got the notice while driving. Just walked in the door. Getting the kids together to watch. Cheers mate
Rock on man!!! Have an awesome evening.
I can barely change OIL in my truck yet I watched the entire video. You're talented my friend!
Awesome. Glad you enjoyed it
Thanks for the video awesome
Great video!
I love your videos. That's all I gotta say. Incredible content
Thank you
hey! to compress your rings when fitting the piston, you might want to try using those nylon straps that come on bags. Soak them in engine oil and wrap and twist one end to compress them. The oil will flow into the rings and help them seat easily! Saw this in a ghetto shop in India.
Absolutely invaluable! Thanks so much :)
Thank you.
Great video well explain
I love this video thank you
Great video
Great video subscribed
Another good video mate, keep em coming! :)
I don't think there are many car mechanics who would do such a precise job. Good job
There are plenty that do. And sadly plenty that don't
You musn't twist the rings at all, there are a lot of rings wich are coated, and the coating can't stand twisting,it just cracks.
you must spread the ring, thats why there are tools for that.
liked and subscribed, great video, cleanliness and prep is key, hope to keep up with your channel and hear this engine run for its new life once again, cheers fazzeg3
It’s up and running beautifully. :)
Man , that was fantastic , I litrary had to login and subscribe your channel to comment , you are tresure in mechanics , smooth explaining , catching work , great job !!
+Abid IT and Stuff thank you!!! I really appreciate the kind words
Not many you tube I watch from start to finish. Thanks
Thank you 🙏🙏🙏
You da man Charles!
Great video bro. You make feel like I can really do this, which may be a setup...😂
Thank you!
Gday from sydeny Australia thanks for a another great video
Thanks and cheers from around the world.
Very cool! You make it look so easy.
It's pretty easy
I believe you, I just don't trust myself doing big jobs like this yet, not that I need to. I changed my spark plugs in the spring and was very proud of myself for just doing that! Next I'm going to change my own oil and maybe the front brakes, they're pretty squeaky.
last few engines I assembled I held the block on the bell-housing bolts & didn't like the amount of flex the stand had... I am certainly going to try mounting it off one side's engine mounts.. thanks for that Charles
BTW I like to put 1 piston in, connect & torque the mains then give the crank 1 complete revolution, any assembly errors are usually obvious this way
That is a good idea!!!! I will probably adopt that one.
GREAT NOTES
It looks fun... Like a interesting school project..
The way you installed the pistons with out a tool is the exact same way I broke a set of piston rings and chiped the deck on my VRT. It wasn't fun having to stop mid build and wait a week for a new set of rings from wiseco. Not to mention having to get the deck resurfaced, Which ultimately led to bent valves because the clearance was too tight from the extra machine work.
+bryce roseborough ouch!
I've heard that taking a cheep ring compressor and cutting the bottom to the proper degrees for the vr6 you are working on works really well.
Techtonic Tuning makes a piston ring compressor for a VR6 that actually works. The only downside is that you have to buy them based on the bore size of the engine you are rebuilding.
Here is the 81mm model which is the standard bore:
techtonicstuning.com/main/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=2869
They basically start with a standard tapered ring compressor, then cut the bottom at an angle to match the VR6.
Damn ! lol, that sucks bro !
Nearly saved up for a 3.6vr6 I cant friggin wait!!!! Turbo it with hpa intake 😍
Yes. I care really close to buying a vr6. It would have got turbo charged 💯
