No, I do not. I read a book holding at eight to twelve inches without glasses. For longer distances (eighteen inches looking at this laptop), I need my progressives. I just got cataract surgery, and I had my surgeon leave me nearsighted, so the only charge from before surgery is that I can read the road signs. No reason to make those of us who have always been nearsighted to become farsighted.

Dr. Wong, I just stumbled upon your channel and subscribed…you are excellent with explaining all topics and are so down to earth! I started wearing readers consistently around age 45. Prior to that I’ve never worn glasses and have amblyopia (discovered around age five and patching did not help it). My question is: of the options you discussed, which might be most helpful for me taking the amblyopia into consideration? I have been wearing drug store readers for 8 years and am tired of the on/off on/off all day long! Thanks for the excellent educational (and fun) videos!

Please, I live in Egypt, and I want to ask you about my medical condition. I am 49 years old. My eyes were good and my vision is almost excellent, but I started to feel long-sighted. I cannot see close objects. I went to a doctor who prescribed me reading glasses. At first, I found the glasses wonderful. Everything is fine up close and he told me that I do not need glasses for walking because my eyesight is largely normal. The problem is that after using the glasses for about a month, I feel that my vision is deteriorating very significantly (all the deterioration occurs within one month). Now I can almost not see at a distance of one and a half meters except With these glasses, I cannot read at all without them, and I feel that my distance vision is deteriorating quickly as well, because almost my job is to sit at the computer for a very long period of time a day. I feel that I am no longer normal without them, and I wear them in order to see everything that is close, but when I take them off, I find distraction.. Do you have any? Tips and thanks

Dr. Rupa you look young. I thought you were a young college student explaining about eye glasses. I've started wearing reading glasses about 3 months ago. I'm naturally destructive. The amount of times I've dropped, stepped, or rolled over in my sleep 😴 and accidentally breaking my reading glasses is ridiculous. I'm at a 1.5. Does it matter the cost of reading glasses as in quality if every 2 weeks I break them by accident? Since they are a new added requirement in my everyday life I've even lost or misplaced them especially at the gym. I've been spending $10-$15 at a Walmart or grocery store on each pair but found reading glasses at a dollar tree that I've been using just fine the past 2 days. Will buying cheap reading glasses hurt my eyes in the future?

Question: I did not understand this phenomenon. My vision was pretty bad 20/400, and I wore progressive lenses. However, I discovered I could better see things close-up, like reading a book, threading a needle, or put on make up by bringing the activity closer, as opposed to using the reading function of my progressive lenses or wearing readers. Friends in my age group, 50- 60, could not correct their presbyopia without readers. Why could I function well bringing items nearer to me?
Then, when I had cataract surgery and elected the implanted multi-focal lenses, I could no longer do close-up work bringing the item nearer to me. And, unfortunately, I soon discovered progressive lenses were needed, because the multi-focal implanted lenses did not fully correct my vision needs near or far. Disappointing for sure.

    • @DrRupaWong

I'm sorry Marietta that you didn't have the expected result from surgery. Yes, many of my nearsighted patients often will just take off their glasses instead of wearing their readers. The nearsightedness allowed you previously to see up close and with a wider range than the reading part of your progressives.

In an emergency I have noticed that if I scrunch my eyebrows like I'm mad or something and then I try to look right underneath my eyebrows I find a spot where it's actually a bit focused but I don't do that all the time because it's not something that I can do all the time unless I want really bad headaches and to mess my vision up even more probably

I'm also 46 and near-sighted. I have worn contacts since I was 16 and have always been able to see distance and up close just fine, but over the past few years, close-up vision with contacts IN has become nearly impossible. With contacts OUT, I can read up close just fine (but then I can't see 5 feet ahead of me lol). Is that still presbyopia? My distance vision seems to be unchanged. Trying to figure out a solution - leaning toward just getting readers for close reading when my contacts are in. Working at a computer is a massive challenge - I'm never the right distance away from anything so I usually just wear my prescription glasses and they're constantly on and off as I try to focus. Really challenging times!

I’m 15 and have exotropia my eye goes outwards and my right is weaker I had surgery on my right eye when I was 7 and I’m not sure what it was for but it definitely didn’t do much
I wear glasses and have pretty bad eyesight without them I talked about this to my eye doctor and all they keep saying is “you have to wait til ur 30 for a surgery there’s nothing you can do about your eye squint” and that really bothered me so much
when I’m looking at myself in a mirror or phone camera I can actually control it and make my eyes go straight but I used to do it well but it’s harder for me to do it cos I don’t have much of the control
is there anything at all that you would recommend to me or anything I can do to get rid of it?
like do I need to do any specific eye exercises or anything to strengthen my eye muscles so they can coordinate properly.

Hi! Unfortunately I can't provide medical advice over social media. So, specific advice to you and what to do in your case is. not something I can tell you in a RUclips comment. But, I can tell you if you aren't sure why your doctor gave you the arbitrary age of 30 to revisit surgery - then I would definitely get a second opinion from a strabismus specialist. If you're in the US, you can find all of us who are fellowship trained here www.aapos.org. There's also an International directory there, where you can look up international doctors who came to the US and completed the fellowship I pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus here. Hope that helps. They should be able to tell you if you're a good surgical candidate or not. Good luck!

I've recently noticed that I started to dislike reading even though I always loved it, I was suddenly fighting my way through chapter after chapter instead of picking a book up and putting it down after like 6 hours like "....what happened? How can it already be dinner time?!" then some days ago I bought *the swarm* by Frank Schätzing and it's such a good read that I got mad enough to actually remember that bad vision might be my problem (runs hard in the family) so I took my book went to the book store and tested glasses. +1.00 fit me very well and I was finally reading for hours again 🥰
