    Thanks Dr Wong
    I have myopia since 2012
I never wear my glasses regularly
I only use my glasses while watching TV or in classroom.

So, the key is to give your eyes a break such as when you look at close distance activities such as computers, phones, books, etc. I would say you should give your eyes a minimum of 10 minutes break for every 1 hour of close distance activity. The break means looking at far distance things and not continuing to look at the phone, computer, etc.

    Hi Dr. Rupa,
I must dispute you on solid scientific grounds.
As a superior ophthalmologist, medicine is your total life.
But in engineering science, you are just wrong.
If you place a -3 Diopter lens, on the normal eye, it becomes -2 diopters more myopic in nine months.
Our "nearsightedness ", is always self induced, as a scientist.
( Technically it is a control system. )
That means, that prevention is possible, if the mature person, will wear a +2 diopter for all close work, when he is a 20/50, on his Snellen.
Then slowly, he will get his Snellen back to 20/20.
The minus lens makes your refractive state, even more negative, always.
    Tragically.
Even you use Atropine to prevent accommodation, on your children.

When I first got my glasses I was able to see but then a year later the glasses wasn't working and I felt I needed a higher prescription but then I said to my self I'ma stop wearing my glasses then my vision reversed slowly within a year my vision started coming back but I can't see things far it's blurry but I no longer need glasses for seeing things close like before now I can't see things far without squinting

My prescription in jan 2021 was -0.75 I had a slight astigmatism and only used them for looking at the board in class… long story short I lost my glasses around may. I didn’t think it was a big deal and therefore didn’t tell my parents cuz I knew I’d get into trouble lmao. However with me constantly squinting and struggling to see in class I got to a point where it was just impossible to see. I went in for my new appointment bc it had been a year. I jumped from -0.75 to a -1.75 and have been told to wear my glasses all day. I’m not sure if that happened naturally or if me squinting caused damage to my eyes …

It is crazy how what western medicine teaches eye doctors are the exact opposite of what people experience first hand. I have read story after story of how specifically children should not wear glasses and those who are prescribed them that don't wear them later are shown to no longer have a prescription needed where children who did wear their prescription glasses had to keep them for life. I have experienced my vision become dependent and even used tests to confirm. I stopped wearing my glasses and years later my vision has mostly improved yet an eye doctor would tell me to wear them which would put me back again. Do you think people who look at the same signs from the same distance before and after glasses are just lying that they used to be able to see it better before they got glasses ? No. That is silly. Also, children who are indoors most of the time need glasses in time. Let your children get sunlight. Their eyes need it. Sungazing is corrective. Western medicine is corrupt and bought out by Rothschilds.

Do not let your kids stare at the sun...come on guys that's just so dumb I can't even imagine why people are liking this comment.
Dr. Rupa explained how the changes to the shape of the eye and/or muscles causes the vison distortion that glasses correct. This is a summary of scientific findings that you never address.
Your experiences with not using glasses and that improving your vision is most likely due to the phenomenon of 'accommodation'. This does not mean your vision actually improved. It may seem like it did because your brain and eyes are straining to see more clearly. This is not good for you and does not actually lead to lasting changes in vision. It's how the brain is accommodating with the stress of trying to see clearly. Natural vision does not improve your vision and studies show this.
I think rational people should not look at the "story after story" that you vaguely reference and rather look at the decades of research. Farsightedness (Hyperopia) can be outgrown but nearsightedness (myopia) cannot. Kids need glasses to help them possibly outgrow or deal with the changes in vision. If not, this can cause permeant problems. There are many variables in play and usually stories do not give the full picture. So, you can have a story where one kid outgrows their glasses but one doesn't, but you'd be comparing apples and oranges due to one kid having different genetic or physical differences. This is why we should rely more on science than an assortment of stories, because scientific tools of statistics and causality analysis can actually find what the reasons behind some change are.
I write this for the kids. If you're a grown adult and want to experiment on yourself and believe this stuff, then have at it. The kids usually don't have a say in the matters of their parents. When they're young enough they believe their guardians know what's best for them and have their best interest at heart. Even when they're teenagers and can think mostly for themselves they still don't have the legal independence to make decisions for themselves, such as making doctors appointments or getting glasses.
Don't experiment on your kids over what you read on the internet. Work with PROFESSIONALS that have DECADES of clinical experience and have seen THOUSANDS of patients. No clinician is perfect but its hell of a lot better than staring at the sun.
Your message is dangerous because you're directly talking to parents ("Let your children get sunlight. Their eyes need it. Sungazing is corrective"). Some will absolutely be gullible enough to fall for this stuff. Hope I can a decent enough counternarrative for them to atleast look at the scientific principles and studies behind eye research.

Yeah its interesting. I had an interesting experiance too. At 45 I relised i need reading glases, so while I was on holiday in Lithiania i went to check my eyes.
Turned out my vidsion is just slightly off, so I need something +0.75 to +1 Now whil +1 would give me the perfect visio, the optician suggested to consider =0.75 first as long as i need them just sometimes and not for very intense reading . So i ended up gettin +0.75. And they were fine in 98% of time. I could not read these microscopic letter on some tiny items.
Now coz i was so happy with them i decided to get another pair of specs for my work. I do work in the UK which means i had to see an optician in UK.
Long story short- the optician ordered me +1.5 glasses o_o . Same vision , different country and different optician.
Im still using my +0.75 glasses for over a year now and i don use +1.5

I've been wearing glasses for 45 years. I totally disagree with you that wearing glasses "Does not affect your vision!!" Doctors and opticians like you are WRONG! Opticians always tend to advise us to prescribe glasses to give us perfect vision. DON'T do that. If you do that, your vision will weaken over time! From my life experience, it is best to prescribe glasses slightly LOWER than your perfect vision. OTHERWISE it will make your eyesight worse EVERY single year you go visit your optician. An over prescribed glasses stimulates the muscles opposite of what our eye muscle needs to focus, wich cases worse vision. Under prescribing glasses helps us exercise our eye muscle to improve our vision.

    • @samyakchhajed

Yes, I agree with you. Because if people think logically they will understand that if glasses were to improve eyesight as they give perfect vision then our eyesight shouldn't become blurry as when we are a baby mostly we all have a perfect eyesight. So if our perfect vision goes down then this means that having perfect vision doesn't help in improving the eyesight.

I was an optician for over 35 years and as such I remember fitting a young girl or boy with their first pair of glasses to correct their myopia. Their first glasses were usually very weak. About a year later I would see them again and their eyesight had deteriorated more and they needed an increase in their glasses. With each increase they of course were wearing their glasses more and more often until they were never without their glasses anymore. I never, ever saw anyone needing their prescription reduced. Considering that you have been an ophthalmologist for twenty years and have never needed glasses until this year is amazing. All the reading and studying your eyes were doing should have had you wearing glasses long ago as a nearsighted doctor. So you have been extremely lucky to have had very good vision, and still do, for so long. I'm sure the prescription you now have is very weak and mostly just to relax your eyes doing close work. But lets' see what happens to your eyesight when you next examine your eyes. I'm betting that since getting your glasses you are wearing your glasses a little more often each month. aren't you? I'm also betting that you're going to be needing an increase in your glasses. At some point you're going to get tired of putting on and taking off your glasses and you're going get progressives so you can keep your glasses on all the time. You may or may not need a prescription in the upper segment. By the way, your patient's are going to trust you more if your wearing glasses yourself. I should also add that you look good in glasses. Have you ever wore non-prescription glasses just for fashion?

I have a cousin who has refuses to wear her corrective lenses whether it be glasses or contact lenses. She has needed them since 2016, but she has not worn them since she first got them because according to her, she does not like to put things over her eyes. That is an attitude you can't have if you have poor vision. It is something you can't take lightly because your eyes and your head are going to be in a lot of pain. The side effects are not worth it, and that attitude has to change when she is going to start driving. For people who have poor vision and do not like to wear their corrective lenses and refuse to wear them, suck it up. You can't just choose not to wear them when you need them. You'll make your eyes work harder, it will lead to negative side effects, and if your vision prescription changes over time, that is just going to make the side effects worse. Don't be a fool and just wear your glasses or your contact lenses whether you like it or not.

My daughter is 10, and she is high myopia with astigmatism. When she went to the eye doctor last year at age nine her prescription was a -8.00 in her left eye and -6.75 in her right eye. Her left eye jumped 2.25 diopters in one year and her left eye jumped 1.50 diopters, I think. She's been in glasses since she was five, and her second optometrist put her in contacts at age six to try and slow down her progression. The last eye doctor put in her notes that she had +1 elevation, with apical vessel branching in her left optic nerve. He told me she would lose the peripheral vision in her left eye. He told me why, but I don't remember. He also said if I don't remember why not to worry about it. NY question is should she be seen by a pediatric ophthalmologist or is it fine for her to just keep seeing an optometrist? Thank you so much for taking the time to read this.

Primate studies, REFRACTIVE STATES, from birth.
First: I totally support your use of Atropine, on your children, to prevent entry into myopia, before they are actually nearsighted (negative state, for the normal eye).
In fact these primate eyes, show that our eyes are highly responsive to their Average of Accommodation - in both directions.
I know this is never taken seriously, in medicine, but as an Engineer, I take this objective science, very seriously.
Even this data, suggests that we should be very careful with long term close work.
But I also know that the only approach that will ever work, is "reducing accommodation for near", by using Atropine, while the child still has 20/20 (positive refractive state).
It takes a wise mind, to accept the need for prevention, while your child still has 20/20.
The "reasons", are in those primate experiments - in my engineering opinion.

This is incorrect. I had lasik 20 years ago and fixed my vision, but recently it started getting worse again. I had glasses for a few years that did improve my eyesight, but I could still see well without them. 20/20 without glasses, 20/15 with glasses. My vision decreased a little and I got a new perscription a month ago that was uncomfortably strong. And now, yes I can see better with the newer perscription compared to my old glasses, but I can no longer see any of the things that 1 month ago I could see and do clearly without any glasses. That isn't a distorted memory, it's a blurry fact.

Personally I would try going without the glasses especially if your correction power is that small. As someone who has worn glasses for over 25 years I think that glasses do make your eyes more dependent and thus continue getting worse. I’m curently -8.25.

Reading glasses causes your eyeball to stretch to adjust to the light being focused in the eye. This is called axial elongation. When your eyeball is stretched it causes your nearsightedness to worsen.
