Are we sure it’s even Deathroot, Fishnuts? The most notable trait for Deathroot is the eyes but the “thing” under Stormveil is missing them. Why would the Deathroot resemble his likeness miss the most important detail? It’s likely not Deathroot and reading the item description on the pustule found next to it paints an even more sinister picture. Prince of Death’s Pustule - A fetid pustule taken from “facial flesh”. Raises vitality. (Vitality governs resistance to the effects of Death.) It is said that this pustule came from the “visage” of the Prince of Death, he who used to be called Godwyn. As First Dead of the demigods, it's said he's buried deep under the capital, at the Erdtree's roots. The words “facial flesh” and “visage” from “he who used to be called Godwyn” tells us something darker. Godwyn has been flayed and this is just his flesh. What’s interesting to note is the Black Knife is fashioned after Melina’s Blade of Calling, which has the same shotel like design similar to the Godskin Peelers. These daggers are called misshapen on purpose because they are created to stab but to peel and carve. Just my theory though, Fishnuts.

Wow now Stormveil looks even more terrifying. For some reason I am always scared of buildings having decaying walls and floors, holes, cracks and rust that comparable of a rotting, injured flesh. Even worse if from those nooks and crannies unspeakable and unexplainable things come out like they have been there forever. It's my kind of horror and none other have come close to terrify me as much as this.
The connection to the forge does have some supporting pieces of evidence to it, now that I think about it. The corpses of the giants also have near identical roots sprouting from their wounds inflicted by some kind of trees or misshapen logs stabbed through their backs. The very same objects that can be seen around flame monk camps.
I personally think those stakes are giant briars of sin, which were used to gouge out the fell god's eyes from the fire giants. We often find worshippers of the briars of sin alongside fire monks. The only possible reason for this i can think of is that they are worshipping or creating the stakes. Furthermore, it is said that Marika herself defeated the fell god, yet it only manifests itself as eyes found in the fire giants. To "defeat" the fell god, you would have to destroy all of these eyes, which we can see happened with the stakes. So, we can draw the conclusion that Marika created the stakes. And furthermore, we find marika impaled later on, giving us insight as to how these stakes were created: she stabbed herself to create colossal briars of sin, which would slay the fell god of the fire giants.
There's an unusual crater on a rooftop of the castle near the main gate Visible from right outside the imp statue room that leads back to the main gate The crater actually looks more like a burrow, as if something crawled out of it... A place of birth perhaps?
I believe that Death Blight is eating/ eroding the castle away from the inside, with the thorny, decaying roots of the death blight, growing from the “manifested” face of Godwyn’s corpse. - I commented this before I watched the video, he took the words right out of my mouth :D
Not that related to the video content, but I've always loved how the dragon that godrick worships doesn't even look powerful, or one of the ancient ones. It's just a poor, dissicated and twisted body that landed by (dis) fortune in that giant pillar. Just like godrick's mind is distorted and decided to land on the uncanny "art" of grafting. He wants to be like godfrey, but how can him be like someone who slain thousands of those, and more powerful ones? And it's because of that deprivation and insanity that godrick's arena is the way it is (and I love that fact)! Sorry for any English mistake.
These lore videos are interesting. And what you said about Stormveil being your favourite level design... yeah, can't think of anything better. Its masterful. In fact, nothing beats the first time you playthrough Limgrave.
What the fuck. This is such a small detail that almost everyone would miss, but they decided to put it in the game anyways. That is so fucking cool. And that's interesting that that's actually a thing they do in construction work. I love FromSoft.

Such a cool and interesting detail! I actually loved the fact that the stairs were warn out in Sen's Fortress. Those details are such an amazing touch that usually go unnoticed but make all the difference!
You can see the same sickly burnt texture on the doors to the Three Fingers. Some of the burns on Stormveil even look like they have giant fingerprints burned into them
I have never noticed those cracks and that is great attention to detail. I do think the deçay is actually melted stone from the dragon and that is why it looks the same as the forge in the mountain tops while also creating splits in the wall, but amazing theory anyways.
That was fascinating! After your video I was looking up some locations: all death root and ulcerated tree spirits follow like a trail from Leyndel through storm veil castle. Interestingly, they completely avoid Caelid and Liurnia (which has the lake of rot beneath it). One branch moves towards the giant's forge but doesn't quite reach it. However, there's lots of room beneath the forge... There's also a branch moving towards volcano manor but stopping just shy of the togetha snake's lair.
It looks.. like it's a living creature, sick with some sort of disease. It actually reminds me of a video by Jacob Geller, "Control, Anatomy, and the Legacy of the Haunted House", it talks about how long ago people thought houses could get sick, described as "lesions that run deeper than the walls are thick." I really recommend watching it for potential insight.
my theory is this: shadow of the erdtree will take place in godwyns dream. His roots are attacking landmark locations so they can be absorbed into the dream. I think miquella is using godwyns dream like his own painted world and we will visit locations from the lands between that have been partially or fully absorbed into the dream
I actually think the thing that ties stormveil to the forge of the giants is briars of sin. not the spell, the concept of them. Apparently grace can become briars if you sin against the greater will - which would explain why people blamed godrick’s grafting for the curse. It’s a way of calling it “unholy” or “ungodly”, and since godrick is so obsessed with being golden and grace-given, he would have a lot of grace to turn. And the briars were almost definitely used against the giants, as seen by the big spikes that seem to have killed them.

It's tough to speculate on the marks on the Forge of the Giants, but it might be worth pointing out that we find deathroot sprouts and beasts who live in Death all the way up in Farum Azula. It seems very unlikely that Godwyn was already dead when (if) Farum Azula was connected to the ground at some point. This sounds crazy, but maybe, just maybe, death root actually teleported up there in a same way we did. Well, either that or Maliketh inadvertedly spread it.
I think that there are two different things happening. I think that the mottling is caused by deathroot and that the thorns are caused by Radagon. When Godwyn died and his body was placed at the foot of the Erd Tree, that caused the spread of deathroot. Later, when Radagon took control of the Elden Ring, thorns blocked the entrance of the Erd Tree and vines emerged from the elden ring. So I can see how one caused the 1st effect(mottling) and then the later event caused the other(thorns)
Really looking forward to your video on Godwyn’s face under the castle. We often refer to it as a face but if you look behind there’s the whole body trapped under the rocks. Really wondering what happened there. Did he try to reincarnate itself under the castle for some reason and was stopped but not defeated, Godrick being left with a decomposing corpse that spreads through his castle and slowly destroys it? I don’t know. But I also like to think of the outer claw marks as something more ancient, from the time of the Lord of Storms and his war against Godfrey. I guess we’ll never know!
I read a theory somewhere that Godwyn’s body is trying to revive him, but since he has no soul anymore, keeps failing. Maybe that face is one such failed attempt?
the one thing I would mention is that every gash you pointed at as "nonsensical" for the meteor attack theory has a perfectly aligned hole on its opposing wall. these gashes are all very shallow too, implying that most of the meteor's power was lost upon the initial penetration, and it only made a small mark on its secondary impact. ironically, these marks are actually the strongest pieces of evidence for the meteor theory. (just found some ones you didnt show at the bottom of the elevator after the crucible knight. these do look more-so impossible. still, the other ones dont look like coincidence)
I was exploring the area on my own, and I was actually subscribing to the idea of thorns being the cause at first. I initially thought the impacts had been designed to look bored out, and combined with certain wounds that are entirely coiled with thorns, it looked like the thorns had internally separated certain chunks, and made them fall out. But upon seeing these weak impacts that align perfectly with other holes, it really seems like the stronger evidence. I do like the staple detail you caught though, and some of the "claw-marks" are problematic. Evidence really seems to point both ways, it's interesting.
It seems plausible, it clear Godwyn is like rotting the whole of The Lands Between on every level equal to that of the Greater Will. The whole place of Lands Between seems very metaphysical place which is impacted by demigods and Godwyn js praised as one of the strongest.
Two things here that still drive me nuts.. where’s the Stormveil face’s eyes is the first thing. The Forge of the Giants is the second thing. The damage along the inner walls, what caused that? What are those two huge cracks about. Why does the glowy fire looking stuff resemble the false leaves of the Erdtree. I say false because the specific things I’m talking about look like they are above the Erdtree and have a weird sort of flowing motion. What is up with the massive hole in the bottom of the forge and the now solidified substance that leaked out? Aghhhhhhh!!!
I assume the fire pot is also afflicted be deathroot seeing the trolls appear to be impaled by death root also only just covered in layers of snow and ice
i dont think those are claw marks they spiral and in areas that are even more damage the castle looks as if it was changing texture entirely as if it were turning into deathroots itself those gashes are almost organic looking almost like the gashes that are the eyes on the godwyn corpse under the castle i think the castle is growing godwyn's eyes.
I don't believe so the "claw marks" don't really look like claw marks are also rotting inside. It's gashes caused by godwyn, which we know he can do if you check the weathered dagger.

It was once a seat of power for one of the most reputable bloodlines in The Lands Between but Godrick is using it as a place of torture and mutilation. It could be that this debasement of such an important symbol of Godfrey's bloodline was so profound that it acted as a magnet for the Prince of Death(who was the son of Godfrey and may have once held the castle).
Other lore crafters speculate and believe that Elden Ring's gods, outer gods and endings essentially outline a philosophy striving for domination in the world, or 'principles you would follow' as Melina puts it. For many of the outer gods, ages and its previous followers who yet remain, they all suffer under the Golden Order. The Flame of the Fell God, while being its own separate entity, seems somewhat related or associated with the Frenzied Flame. Both are fires that can do great damage, and melt very solid things away. So while that trait might be something they both share, it could be that the Fell God's fire at the Forge of the Giants, simply burned away the insides of the Forge until it degraded and decayed to its current form. To say its decay is related to Godwyn's effect on Stormveil is a bit of a stretch, because we don't have an item description that proves or implies they are related. After all Omens have horns, and during the Age of the Crucible, wings, horns, tails, and scales seem to be venerated equally, though, yet there seems to be no relation or association to Omens.

Am a Soulsbourne/Fromsoft newbie and simply fascinated by the layers and levels of detail in Elden Ring. It’s less a game and more a work of art.

I never noticed the deathblight on the kiln of the flame of ruin. When we get to it in part 125 of the lorethrough we should talk about it!

Liurnia does have deathblight in it. In one of the few forest areas along the east coast, specifically.

Curiously enough the chapel of anticipation seems to be unaffected (only thorns).

Is it possible that the claw marks specifically were from a dragon attacking Stormveil from before when Godrick was in the castle (ie the Storm Lord)?
I don't believe so the "claw marks" don't really look like claw marks are also rotting inside. It's gashes caused by godwyn, which we know he can do if you check the weathered dagger.
