    Thanks great info , from what understand the latest API rated engine oils ( SP included) are backward compatible to SJ but no earlier . I've got an outboard that is only 6 years old but the recommended oil is a SH , SJ or SL So I'm assuming that a SN or SP oil would be fine to use . Outboard motors seem to lag behind in technology compared to cars , bet my 2003 Corolla's 1.8L engine is more advanced than my 50HP 4 stroke 2015 outboard

    Nice video!! I have an older Mitsubishi Galant 1992 and the service manual recommends an API classification SG or SG/CD, based on the video I should be using SJ or SL which is backwards compatible, but I can't seem to find any SJ or SL oils where I live. Is there any other API classification that I could go with for this engine's oil change?

    • @SummitRacing

      For your Galant, check out Motul’s Classic Nineties motor oil. It’s specially formulated with the correct levels of zinc, phosphorous, and molybdenum for modern classic vehicles.

    i have a 25 year old car, never looked for api specs etc, always used 10w-40 SN full synthetic ,, few days ago i looked at the manual it said SH motor oil, could not find SH or SM so i used SL 10w-40 full synthetic, i was imprest the engine became very QUIET !!!!!
    only one question SN motor oil did no damage to my catalytic converter, is SL safe for it, or should i go back next time to SN

      When they talk about the dangers of using low SAPS oils they mean in high performance engines. This is a very fringe issue not seen in OEM engines.

    Does API SL refers to Jaso MA always? If an oil leveling API SL without leveling Jaso then how to know if that oil can be used in motorbikes. (example-Takumi 10w40 mineral)

    • @SummitRacing
      @SummitRacing  3 года назад +1

      Not necessarily. You would need to find an API SL oil with specific JASO-rated oil for wet-clutch operation. I recommend Maxima Maxum4 Extra Synthetic Oil, Maxum4, semi-synthetic blend oil, or Maxum4 Premium mineral oil. You can find these and many other choices by searching “Motor Oil” and filtering down JASO MA2 approval, and API rating of SL @ SummitRacing.com

    The recommendation of my car is API-SN 5-30w can i use API-SP 5-30w because i buy online SN and they give me SP pls. answer it and can i mix SN and SP w/ same SAE

    • @SummitRacing
      @SummitRacing  4 года назад +1

      For automotive gasoline engines, the latest engine oil service category includes the performance properties of each earlier category. If an automotive owner's manual calls for an API SN oil, an API SP oil will provide full protection.

    Hi, for my 1.4 VVti, 4ZZFE engine, the manuals says that i should use SAE 5W30 API SJ, does any upward norm like SL will do anything better? what about the different oils like castrols recommands on their website for the same engine, there is like 3 different oils with the same SAE recommanded, how could i know? what s the difference?

    • @SummitRacing
      @SummitRacing  4 года назад

      It is personal preference. As long as the oil you’re using meets or exceeds the manufacturer’s specs, it is okay to use. With the newer synthetic oils, there is very little difference between them, unlike the older conventional oils.

    • @SummitRacing
      @SummitRacing  5 лет назад

      The service rating of passenger car and commercial automotive motor oils is classified by the American Petroleum Institute (API). The program certifies that engine oil meets certain Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) quality and performance standards.
      CH-4 was introduced in 1998 and any higher grade is safe to use. CI-4, CJ-4, etc.

      I'm using SL oil in my Focus 3 which has very stricted requirements of 5w20 API SN oil...147k on dashboard, so far so good. API SL and ACEA A3/B3 is good oils with a complete additive package. If you want your engine serve well, this is the right oil for you and if you change it every 4-6k miles it would be awesome

    • @jensthronborg5161

      Its a Diesel engine grade "Introduced in 1998. For high-speed, four-stroke engines designed to meet 1998 exhaust emission standards. CH-4 oils are specifically compounded for use with diesel fuels ranging in sulfur content up to 0.5% weight. Can be used in place of CD, CE, CF-4, and CG-4 oils."

    I recently bought a small scooter.
    The dealer told me to use an API rating of SG or SJ.
    Do I have the flexibility to use SH or SL? Or even something more modern?

    • @roughas100
      @roughas100 3 года назад

      Doesn't make much sense recommending SG or SJ , should be SG , SH or SJ . Check out diesel engine oils , I find a lot are rated for gasoline engines too with API SJ, SL pretty common. If you can get "small engine oil " that will probably work better , e.g. Honda 10w 30 or a straight 30 for lawnmowers .

    Modern engine oils desidned to be ecological and environmental friendly and such stuff as wear protection and durability of your engine isn't considered as something important.
    Despite the fact that none of the studies have even come close to proving the impact of cars on the environment, environmentalists continue to groundlessly blame cars for emissions, increase environmental requirements and worsen cars in all aspects.
    My vehicles manual requres 5w20 API SN engine oil and 10k interval, but I never used one and never had any problem with my engine, despite the fact that I'm using "completely inappropriate and old" API SL/CF 10w40 and 3k intervals.
    I did endoscopy last month and my 9 yo 147k engine looks as new!

    i use Lucas hot rod oil in my 2001 regal gs because i want my engine to last with the high zink amount it has. I dont trust modern oil since it dosnt have zink in it any more....there is a reason why all these engines are blowing up now days and im 110% certain its due to modern oils lacking in zink....

      I wouldn't recommend that oil since it is formulated for diesels and heavy-duty commercial applications. I would stick with the oil that Toyota recommends for your application.
