With our 3rd baby arriving soon, there are a few things we did with our first 2 children that we'll definitely be doing differently this time around.
In this video I'm sharing the 3 main things we're going to change this time around.
Even as someone who specializes in child development, I'm still constantly learning. And the experience of our first two children taught me a lot, particularly around our personal preferences and what works best for our family.
These are the things we're doing differently - they aren't right or wrong, but they are based on what works best for us and I hope this video helps you decide on the best approach for your family too!

A tip I learned in speech therapy school: if you want to break a child from their pacifier, but don’t want to be the “bad guy”, just start by poking a hole in it when they aren’t looking. Then, every day make the hole bigger or cut just a little more off. That way they say to themselves, “ this just isn’t doing it for me anymore!” Then they spit it out and you aren’t the “bad guy” taking it away!

My son didn’t take pacifiers and doesn’t take them now (he just turned 6 months). He also refused to be swaddled at all. It was so frustrating to see my friends’ babies (couple weeks difference with mine) sleep so well in their sleep sacks while mine was fighting to get out of it.
I still feed him to sleep.
Honestly, I thought it was something to be ashamed of, but well… it works for both of us. He will never be this small again

Hey! I know this comment is super old, I hope you and your bub are doing well! I have an 8 month old and I still feed him to sleep every single night + day. When did your little one stop feeding to sleep? And was it hard to stop the habit? 😊

Every kid is different. I don't think there's any kind of general truth that would apply to them all. Ours never slept in a swaddle either, she just hated it. But she slept well enough without it. If I learned anything during those three years I've been raising my daughter, it's that I should take advice as a tip. Try it out, it might work or it might not. Observation and adapting to my kid's needs are my best friends here. :)

@9393farah My daughter was the same. And unfortunately once we stopped breastfeeding she was sucking her thumb. It was OK at the beginning, we kind of allowed her to do it but later on it bacame an issue. It took us ages to get rid of this habit and cost us all (her, me and my husband) a lot of stress.
She is 7 now and still sometimes sucks her thumb unconsciously when sleeping in the morning... like it is deeply programmed in her sleeping habit.
I have another baby now and... he refused to take a pacifier so I breastfeed him to sleep. Looks like I am doing the same mistake but I hope that once we switch from breastfeeding to bottle we will find a way to calm him down and definitely we will keep his thumb far away from his mouth.

I still feed my 16 month old to sleep to be honest. I've weaned him off of milk during daytime, but he is currently in a phase where he wants to be fed to sleep again, I think it will just pass naturally with some time.

Halo ftw. Hands down the best swaddles, both of my babies have slept so much better with Halo than any other swaddle. Also, on pacis, we just don’t offer the pacifier unless baby is genuinely wanting it. I’ve had family members try to put the paci in baby’s mouth when he isn’t cranky, or even try to put it back in his mouth if he drops it while sleeping. If he’s content, we don’t try and force it on him. We did the same with our oldest and he decided he was over the paci at about 4 months old, so fingers crossed it all works out the same this time around.

Funny enough, my son doesn’t care for swaddling or pacifiers.
What saved me with napping is contact naps!! He LOVED them until we made the final transition for all sleep to take place in his room when we’re home. I loved them too ): sleep “training” was also a life saver- we did exclusively nights and a month later incorporated the naps. We started at a little after 6mo of age.

Every child is different too. I have 2. Neither would take a pacifier. I offered many kinds at many times to them. Neither had anything to do with them. My first swaddled and fell asleep well but woke up a lot in the night. Didn't stop until i sleep trained him at six months. My second only falls asleep to nursing and is tougher to swaddle, but slept 6+ hours by 2 months. Just have to go with the flow i think

I love the halo for our son ever since he started rolling over but the biggest difference in his sleep for us was when we found the love to dream sleep sack, he loved having his hands next to him. He HATED being totally tied down🤷🏼‍♀️
And yes!! Those cat naps were crazy but we just let him do it. He seemed fine.

I used a dummy with my first purely out of desperation. I was an isolated first time mum, completely overwhelmed. I never wanted to use them at all for many reasons including the ones you listed. we pulled it promptly at 6 months and it is one of my biggest regrets/ lessons as a mum.
For me the benefits do not outweigh the drawbacks, though it's different for every family! For some families its an amazing tool, for us it caused more problems than it fixed. Due with #2 shortly and will not be using one again. we co-sleep and babywear and that is honestly just as good for soothing, if not better!

Ooh, our second is 11 months so probably definitely too late to try to swaddle, but if we have a third little one, maybe swaddling is best. And the pacifier, both our daughters refused to suck on those which is both a good and a bad thing - good that they weren't dependent on anything but bad as they only fell asleep on the boob and needed to be later transferred - with a possible third baby, I'd incorporate more self soothing and promote falling asleep by themself in their cot... 😅 I honestly should've done this with baby #2 because I'm attached to her now as she falls asleep on the boob, like her sister did up until she was 1 year 10 months when I stopped breastfeeding her at bedtime... You live and you try to learn, but I'm definitely too slow to incorporate new methods to this second baby now 😅

First time mom here and good to know I haven't made these mistakes. I've swaddled her since her first days in the hospital and I quickly use a pacifier especially during a diaper change when she gets fussy. It stops her from kicking. I'm not sure about naps though for the most part we just feed her and then put her to sleep.

Thank you for these tips! These will definitely come in handy. I found the nap segment interesting because I just read a neurology study showing about a 20 minute nap can give you plenty of energy because you haven’t yet entered REM sleep and about a 1:30 hour nap also has the same benefits because you’ve completed a REM cycle. While this was a study on helping to prevent Alzheimer’s, it does help to make some sense as to why the 20 min and 1:30 hour naps are so helpful to new borns.

I always do what my baby wants. I always go with the flow so I don't stress myself.
Now my baby is 7 months and her sleeping patterns changes almost every 2 days. I just go with it. Whenever she taking a nap I go down with her. I leave all the house work alone unless I am not tired. I don't stress myself over anything when comes to my baby. Stress is not good for your health.

Another round of excellent advice, thank you, Emma :)
When you mentioned transferring the baby from hands to the crib, reminded me to share my best practice - we use pillows for babies (at least this is what we call them in Croatia) :)
There are different models, some are softer, and some are firm (more firm the part where the baby's back & head are). So this is perfect for keeping her in arms while breastfeeding or when daddy is putting her to sleep :) And then is so easy to transfer her to her bed, without making her startle.😇

Since I discovered you I follow your videos. We used the halo swaddle and it was a bless. All your materials are very useful and suits our concerns or questions we had as parents. Our daughter is still using the pacifier at 15 months only to sleep. I want to stop giving it to her but I don’t know how. Any advices please ? Thank you.

I just bought transitional swaddles bc my lo has been swaddled from birth but seems to be ready to roll. I tried to take them away cold turkey but he just doesnt sleep well without them. So the transitional ones it is. That way if he rolls he can still use is arms

  • @bianka4001
    @bianka4001 Год назад +1

We still mourn the swaddle. Our LO can roll over since 4.5 months and is almost 6 months now. Pre rolling we could swaddle her, kiss on the forehead and leave the room, she'd be asleep in 15 min max. Now she needs her dummy to get the same effect as the swaddle, but because her hands are free she'll instantly take it out to chew on it, play, even half asleep. We always joke it lookes like her hands are posessed, she NEEDS to try take out the dummy. So we have to stay there and gently put her hands away from it until she falls asleep. If we let her be, she'll eventually drop it out of frustration because she can't get it back in herself and starts to cry. But she doesn't need it for sleep cycles, she can connect them fine without it and at night we can't give it to her after her night bottle as it'll keep her awake even longer. Then she just makes noise for a bit and goes back to sleep again herself but no chance to do that initially to fall asleep. She doesn't let us rock her either, she overarches like crazy.

I gave my baby a pacifier the very first night we went home (something I wouldn't do again but I didn't know better) and by about 11 months he had grown tired of the thing and refused to take it. ^^
Let's see if his younger sibling is going to be just as easily weaned off a pacifier. (I doubt it, I think I just got lucky the first time^^).

Congratulations Emma it's so great to hear that.. my baby is 6 months old and really dependant on pacifier to sleep.. but my doctor says that pacifier is harmful for him as it can make him sick.. so my baby gets fussy during night sleep ad wants something to suckle and I'm left with no choice so I give him my nipples to suckle during sleep but it's really exhausting for me as I can not even sleep peacefully.. what should I do?

Hello:) my little Mary is 4 month old. She is not convinced to the pacifier, she is removing it after some time. I realized that she loves to suck her fingers and I was told that it is normal and even beneficial while she is producing sounds during this activity. But I am a bit concerned when she sucks only the thumb without vocalisations, she sucks mainly right thumb and it happens when she wants to sooth herself. I offered her a pacifier instead a thumb, but she prefers thumb.. sometimes breast helps, Mary eats quite often, she is only breastfeed. I will be thankful for bit of advice.
I find your channel very profitable for not experienced parents as I am. Greetings from Poland and have a lovely day:)

Hi Emma, do you have any advice on transitioning from one to two children? And managing with a baby and toddler?

  • @MirwenAnareth
    @MirwenAnareth 17 дней назад

I am totally curious how it went with your third child. :D As much as I generally love your advice, these things, I'd say, are highly individual. I know babies who are calmer with a pacifier and those who hate it and are happier without it. Our daughter loved it, but e.g. she hated any sort of movement restriction such as swaddling right from the start. She wouldn't fall asleep ever if we swaddled her, but she had no trouble at all sleeping without it. She also didn't catnap at all. As I talk about our kids with other moms, I learn their experience is quite different. In my experience, these things are best observed. No advice helps here, one just needs to watch the baby and adapt to their needs.

Hey Emma, I love your videos, they helped a lot. My son is 14 months now. Unfortunately there is one thing that we struggle very much with - sleep, especially during days. Our son never, ever slept for more than 1 hour. 30-45 minutes is his usual. We can try everything from your (and not only yours) list and everything fails. He mostly wakes up crying. During the nights he tends to sleep even 3-4 hours undisturbed by the closer to morning the shorter cycles he has. And he always cries while waking up, very hard to soothe. Any ideas what might be happening here? He has bed connected to ours and we follow the Sears method of upbringing in general. Thanks!

I have four young children. My oldest is 7. My youngest is 5 months old. All of them did well with swaddling but my youngest did not like the swaddle much so I let her sleep (well) on her tummy. It makes her most happy. I didn't allow anything else in the crib. She was absolutely fine. My others did love their swaddle thingies though. Also, all of my children stopped using their pacifiers (other than car rides) after 6months of age. They didn't really care about it so I was glad to eliminate it.

My daughter uses a pacifier to fall asleep and only occasionally when she’s really upset. I’d like to transition out of sucking to sleep and she seems to be happy using her favorite blanket. But unfortunately since she’s still less than 12 months, we can’t leave the blanket in the crib with her so it’s not an option for overnight. I’d love a video about transitioning out of pacifiers (when it needs to happen, how to help a child through it).

Your videos are so informative and useful. My baby is 4.5 months. I've resisted using pacifier. This has meant that I have been her pacifier (comfort nursing) often late into the night, which can be exhausting. Is it too late to offer her the pacifier? Or do you have other suggestions?

I do not regret not using a pacifier, but I wish I would have used a baby carrier much earlier and often. And I wish I started using the haakaa pump as soon as my milk came in, because my son wasn't strong enough to remove milk efficiently. Most of the time when he was fussy he was actually just hungry...

I tried using pacifier with my child, he is nearly 5 months old and all the attempts were futile. He just spits it out. Tried various designs. Still no luck. Just gave up. It's okay though, I just built my day schedule around his sleep: several 30-40 minutes sessions of sleep while eating during the day, longer sleep in the evening and even more sleep during the night. So I get to read, answer emails etc during the short naps, work on my laptop and prepare food in the evening. Pretty neat and tiresome but works for me

My babies would take pacifiers. I tried several styles/brands. They wanted nothing to do with them.
My daughter was rolling over from birth, so i was told not to swaddle her. She'd be all swaddled up and then roll all the way to her stomach while i was still in the hospital. that can be very dangerous.
I swaddled my son until he was 3 months old, then I stopped because he was getting too hot.
What is this 4-month sleep regression that was mentioned? I've never experienced that. I even worked as a nanny for several years and never experienced it working either. My daughter slept 8 hours at just a week old, 12 hours by 8 weeks. My son is 4 months old right now. he sleeps 4 hours wakes up then sleeps a 10 hour stretch. The only thing i can think that i'm doing that others may not be is leaving light classical music playing very quietly. I mean you can hardly hear it, it's very soft. For whatever reason that has always worked for me with keeping babies sleeping for longer stretches.
