The difference between 1.7 and F2 is quite marked in low light. It's great that there are so many options out there, though. I don't own any of the Fujifilm XC lenses so can't really talk about the differences in real life.
I came across the Viltrox lenses the other day when I was looking for a 50mm cheap option, and thought its worth a try for the price, Im still awaiting its arrival but im glad to see the review gives a 👍
Hi Kevin, and Fuji geeks. My xt2 reset itself after a battery change, and now displays ND in top left of screen. ISO at 25000 in auto iso. Screen image has a purple hue. Any ideas? I can’t buy this new lens until it’s fixed 😂
Kevin I always look forward to your videos. Wish you would do some classes in the U.S. but I understand the paperwork to legally do that can be daunting. Happy Christmas to your family and you. I understand the value proposition of the Viltrox lenses. The thing is, I already own quite a lot of Fuji lenses. I’m not too keen to purchase more lenses at focal lengths I already own. Yes, I prefer an aperture ring on the lens barrow. I understand the choice Viltrox made not providing this feature. The quality of the glass and accuracy of the autofocus are the prime considerations when purchasing a lens. My question is why another lens at this focal length when I already own Fuji glass? Half a stop of light gathering isn’t a compelling reason for my use case as a street photographer. Lord knows I don’t need my GAS gland stimulated. As always, I appreciate your images. Happy Christmas to you too. If you already have one of the Fujifilm lenses, then the half a stop wouldn't make me switch. That said, if you don't have a 27 or 75mm (and you are in the market for those ranges) - do check out the Viltrox options. They are quite amazing given the price.
Interesting how ever single reviewer doesn't mention the xc 35mm f2 which is its direct competitor, not the XF. Saying the fuji equivalent is twice the price is a red herring.
Not really. I wouldn't expect professional photographers to be choosing the XC range - either for a backup or primary lens. Personally, I don't use the XC lenses. But it's good that there are lots of options for people.
I recently bought the BrightinStar f0.95 35mm and I love it. It does have an aperture ring (hooray!) but it’s manual focus (boo!) so would have been useless at that boxing tournament. My point is that budget price does not have to mean budget quality. If I could afford them I’d have a few of the Viltrox range.
After purchasing and using the 27f1.2 Pro (drool) I watch with interest as Viltrox releases a new product.....someone (Hugh Brownstone?) floated the idea of Fooj maybe buying Viltrox? Hmmmm......🤔
Second the idea of having a comfortable pair of shoes in general but especially when walking the streets all day taking pictures. I don’t want my dogs crying at the end of the day. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
@kevin_mullins I don't buy the "keeps prices low" argument as TTArtisan, 7Artisan and even Viltrox have shown they can produce quality lenses with aperture rings for low prices. Saving ~$100 ($150 vs. $250) while losing a significant control and dumbing down the experience isn't something we should be encouraging. The size and weight difference is negligible, too. If the cost is *that* much of an issue for someone they should be buying used, anyway. It's one thing if you're deliberately buying a cheap "chracter" lens, but using Viltrox as an example where they offer the 1.4 with aperture ring vs. the 1.7 Air with no aperture ring, the 1.7 is basically e-waste and nobody should be buying it over the 1.4.
During my time i got used to using the command dials for faster adjustment for work. Not having to remove my eye from the screen or viewfinder keeps me more focused when shooting events with lots of different lighting conditions. My 16-55 having an aperture ring problem with it not always going to 2.8 in one go also drew me away from it. I feel there is a market especially for budget lenses to not have it though some people prefer the small camera setups. I could go with either really i like the aperture ring for slower photography like street where i can set my aperture before my subject arrives but turning it off or not having one for events where i can't afford to miss a shot. Manual focus clutches on the other hand i wish more companies would consider them.
The Fuji XC 35mm f2 not a better option then? Costs about £159 I think?

The xc will be better. Its optically perfect almost. I have it and the viltrox 56 1.7 and nothing beats the xc.
I've seen a bunch of reviews of this lens but all you need is Mullins. Viltrox come and take my money!
:-)

I don't think you will be disapointed.

Still using your xpro3 for weddings? Or just the xt5…
Mostly X-T5, but sometimes X-Pro3. I still prefer the X-Pro.

@@kevin_mullinsit is literally the same as xf35 , but in a plastic body.
Now that is an attratcive pricing for that. I have the 56mm , and its superb.
It's a great price for a very good lens IMHO. 👍
Apparently it’s the same internals as the XF equivalent, a comparison video may be good? Cheers Kevin and Merry Christmas! 🎄
I’m hoping for more from the pro line, the 75 and 27 are incredible
Yep, I totally agree with that.

I Can't imagine that would happen as they both have fairly similar product ranges (focal lengths). But who knows.
Look plastiquy and cheap, just hope it's silent enough when focusing. I prefer one simple bag, a camera and 3 of the line top primes and good shoes! ✌
Its very well built, for the price.

X mount lenses without an aperture ring are non-starters. C'mon, companies...
They have been around for a long time. It gives people choices and keeps prices low, which is a good thing.
