I have been using 50s Noir for several months now and it's one of my two main Fujifilm recipes. It's great for moody portraits but I particularly love the look of water - people on the beach or coastal landscapes. Examples posted on Flickr. Thanks for creating.
I am looking for a recipe that can replicate or at least come close to the B&W of Leica cameras. Which of your recipes do you think is the closest? Thanks
I think that If you set your camera in the Camera Raw preferences, you can open Newspaper as Raw and changes you've made in camera also affects the other profiles. I think this will be great ad useful if you want this kind of look also on Fuji color recipes as well. I like it so much, thanks.
Even though it was quick thank you for the mention of the clarity slider because it catches a lot of Fuji users off guard. If you find you're using the clarity slider a lot, you can set the editing software to apply it instantly upon import and leave it set at zero in the camera.
Again thank you for the clarity warning. Was on a photography workshop and it took a relatively long period after taking the picture before the buffer cleared. Unfortunately, this occurred during the entire workshop. Went to B&H while still in NYC and learned someone, who I don’t know, changed the clarity from 0. Easy fix when you know what the problem is. Really excellent, Kevin. Thank you so much for these. I have an XPro2 and an X-T5. I always shoot JPG and RAW. Unlike the X-T5, on the XPro2, WB shift can only be set separately in the main menu whereas it can be adjusted in the WB setting in the custom settings. Will this impact the colours recorded in the RAW file or just in the JPG?
Added these to my XT-5 today and went for a photo walk. So far my favorite is the Newspaper. It's still sort of a bummer that Clarity slows down the camera a lot, so it needs to be used intentionally.
thank you for the effort and the sharing. i am an appreciative subscriber. these monochrome sims look fabulous. what can folks do to modify these settings for their camera/sensor? i have a X-T1 and X-T2. thumbs up.
love these BW images I have the X-E2s without Acros simulation, do you have a recipee for the dramatic newspaper setting that i could use please anyone
You won't get as close, but use the Monochrome setting and adjust the shadows and highlights accordingly. You may need to add grain in Lightroom afterwards though.
I have the x100f, like the newspaper recipe but I can not see how to get for the “the grain effect strong/size small” the choice for the size small part
Fantastic! 👍 Thank you very much, very helpful, I appreciate it! The Newspaper simulation is stunning and the others are gorgeous as well. I don't know how they would apply to my X-Pro3 but the new X-Pro version is about to come out anyway. Another great video, you rock, as always 🎩 Cheers!
These are great. Thank you so much Kevin. I notice the IMAI one from your Oct 2020 video, and the settings are a tad different- have you been evolving these over the years? You always have stunning BW images.
fantastic stuff , with clear commentary and images and helpful tips , i was hoping to see ILFORD iso 50 film simulation , may be next time ... but thanks for sharing wonderful video
You won't be able to get exactly the same with the X-T3 but you can start with the same base Film Simulation and adjust the settings you have available to you from there. Should be pretty close.
Question; would these setting work in a Canon ?? or is it only Fujifilm cameras? Sorry, out there question. But what fun it would be to be able to do that. always looking for a way to spice things up. :). Thank you
I'm loving the newspaper and parr recipes you made. I am wondering though if you would recommend these settings on the X100V or keep the ones from the older video? There are a few small changes with for example Newspaper. Either way thanks a lot! I was using Tri-X 400 before but i prefer your black and white recipes a lot more.
thanks kevin these look great i'll try them out. id love to see your meyerowitz recipe, any chance of sharing? another question, how many shots one average do you think you do at a wedding?? and do you keep all shots or just the ones the couple picks out? and one more question, is first born photography an add in to the wedding pics or a separate thing?
The Meyerowitz recipe is here: www.kevinmullinsphotography.co.uk/fujifilm-recipes-jpeg-setting Weddings? It depends on the time of the year usually and length of coverage. An "average" wedding I'll shoot around 1800 and deliver around 400.
Hi Kevin, wonderful simulations. I definitely will try one or two of them. I loved that you used the same pictures for each simulation. It would be great if you could show in the outro each single of the pictures again in all 4 simulations. This way it's easier to compare on a glance. About you Lightroom setting, I though LR still struggles with Fuji Raws and the way the sensor is setup differently? Did Adobe solve this nowadays?
Lightroom has never struggled with Fuji files in my experience. Generally, people over sharpen files (the default sharpening by Lightroom is not the best). Adjust the sharpening accordingly in LR and then no drama.
@@jorghahn2903Because all that really does is affect the minimum ISO to protect shadows/highlights. I prefer to manage that with the exposure controls.
Off topic but interesting. Fuji rumors stated the next summit is February 20th. They will announce the X100VI. The X100VI will have the 40MP sensor and engine processor 5 from the XT5/XH2. IBIS will be present. Sounds like a great package. Hope the new lens used on the X100V can resolve well on the 40MP sensor. Will preorder on day one. I bet the X100VI will be more expensive than the X100V at launch. It will be cheaper than the inflated premium demanded for used X100Vs. I’ve seen these presets from a previous video. Thank you for sharing them again. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
Kevin i cant set a lot of those on my XE1. Will that software program those settings into my XE1 if I plug it into my computer like you are doing on your computer with the XT5?
I’ve connected my camera and it’s showing in the left menu however I’m not getting neither is it showing camera profile in the right panel as yours is, I don’t get it and tried all sorts of stuff, there seems to be something missing in the issues, or the explanation!
setting these recipes up now in my xh-2 !! Question pls: on white balance are you just using auto or always setting a custom WB per lighting and or does that not matter when in B/W simulation?? i do see WB shift settings but not sure if there is another step ?? thanks so much
Thanks Kevin for those. I see that your 50s noir is different from the one you made few years back (I always keep screenshos on my phone of your simulations and the sims in my cameras). I use that one and it was constantly crushing the blacks and shadows, I had to tone it down in some areas to fit the low light photos I was taking. I'll definitely try this new one. I'll also try the other ones as they seem different from your previous ones and I'll keep an eye on the blacks and shadows so they keep some details.
Oh, I am so sorry; but I cannot watch your video any longer as you are using the same pictures over and over while describing different settings. What's the point of the pics if I cannot tell the difference between settings?
Glad for the back & forth, but it's not clear as to how this makes sense. If I am trying to learn how the settings are different; but I'm being presented with the same image output, I cannot see how that's effective. Maybe I'm missing something. And if so, I am sorry for being a grumpy poster. Allow me to paint the picture this way. Imagine that I want to learn how to draw shapes from your instruction (circles, squares and triangles). You then describe the 3 points of a triangle and maybe even the 4 sides of a square; but you keep showing a circle being drawn on screen. The image never matches the text being described. It never matches the description and doesn't make sense. As such, I'll never learn. I hope you can imagine the potential confusion that might ensue. This was the effect that your video about B&W settings had for me. I wanted to learn; but couldn't. @@kevin_mullins
@@raytbrown2 The way I have done it is correct. The series of images are used to show the difference in the settings. Then, the same series of pictures for the following three recipes. If that's what's taking place, I agree with you. But from my POV, I didn't see that nor could tell from the audio that this (agreeably proven method) was occurring. What if your camera didn’t have clarity setting?
One can use a diffusion filter instead if clarity is set to minus value.
You can add it later in Lightroom or simply don't use it. Clarity slows the camera down a lot anyway.

Why is Xraw so painfully slow? Every change takes 20 seconds or more to update.
It has to send the change to the camera to make the adjustment. It is slow, but it makes sense why.
