This takes me back..so many fond memories I trained as a kimono dresser and opened a small kimono rental shop. I also have friends who are enthusiastic about kimono and japanese culture with their own kimono shops selling different items. My shop was named Akimoto (秋本) and its what go me thru my college studies hehe. I trained my younger sister to inherit it.. but sadly we had to close due to the pandemic
I love them all but I do have two favorites. The long trailing obi that the Maiko’s wear -I have always thought it was so glamorous and My second favorite one is the Fukura Suzume-so pretty!
How do you choose which obi to wear with which kimono when it comes to colours and patterns? Are there any do's and don'ts? Thank you for making interesting and fun videos about Japanese culture!
there actually are! you wanna pair your kimono and obi based on their formality ranks, not every kimono is compatible with any obi. You can easily find some charts if you google for kimono compatibility.

Wow what a fascinating video! Love to see a followup with more details about which style is good for which situation and how to choose-or is it truly just a fashion preference?
Very lovely ideas.. I think I like the big square knot the best. I have ordered a vintage wedding Obi from Japan, which I look forward to displaying on my dresser.
When my great aunt went to Japan and brought me a Yukata ages ago, I didn’t have any knowledge about Yukata. Always wondered why the Obi I had looked so different. Apparently what I have is a Heko Obi.
Hey Shogo, Kazu, Harumi and Tomoko, what an interesting video! What a beautiful tradition that of the OBI! Thanks to this video, we learn the meaning of wearing the OBI and its knotting according to the circumstance. Many thanks for your work so interesting for me, humble Frenchman, who is quite uneducated on all these beautiful traditions of Japan; it's a joy for me to enrich my general knowledge with your videos. Sincerely to you all, Um Abraço
Very understandingly explained! Personally I like all the three obi types, but fukuro obi and its variants are slightly more beautiful because of color and pattern.
I loved this video. Even though I know this information you still always learn new, I didn't know the story behind the Tailor knot. 😍. I have several obi tying mooks, and love practicing them. I can't say I have a single favorite but my favorite obi in my 30 obis is a Maru obi, these are the obis that do not need repairing.
Could you make men OBI video please that video was so good I loved it so much ❤👘 I have Question How about OIRAN OBI? ( I hope I have written it right ) it's so Lang and difrent
hello Shogo! many years ago a couple of animes I watched had glamorous women with obis that had large beautiful bows tied in the front. Were any obi tied to the front or was this simply artistic license by the creator of these anime?
I have heard (though I am not Japanese and I am not fully educated on Japanese customs in the slightest) that tying the belt in the front is the mark of a courtesan, or an oiran!
Speaking of belts, can you tell us about those thick rope belts that characters like Sasuke (Naruto Shippuden) Kozuki Oden (One Piece) wears? I've seen Sumo wrestlers wear those. But do they wear them regularly or just for ceremonial occasions.
The Belt Sasuke wears (or other characters in a similar manner) is a type of Obi Belt, it’s assumed to be worn to represent a clan or somebody. (Or it could just be worn cause they like the color or it makes them look cool.) But to answer your question, I think it’s to be worn for regular use (I’m not 100% sure), but I think there are other types of Obi Belts that can be worn for formal/ceremonial occasions.
@@incidentdecorate8090 Yamato (Kaido's son/daughter) also wore them. I think it's a very unique feature u can see on Kimono (also u can see Sumo Wrestlers wore them with Fundoshi, especially the Yokozuna).
I think the information that there is a type of obi for men and various ways of wearing them should be mentioned too. Kakuobi for men would have been interesting for your male audience.
Perhaps the charm of the really long obi belts is when another person takes them off forcefully, spinning the disrobing woman around like a top. This is actually a trope in samurai period anime and video games.
What is the reason you talk bout red light district where Geiko work with entertainment? Geiko is not prostitutes as maybe some people think, they only work with entertainment until they maybe wats to marry someone they meet there and quit the job as a Geiko. Maye you could researchand tell the story with Geiko in Japan. What is the reason that you say Geiko in Kyoto and Geisha in rest of Japan? What I know from documentary from Kyoto is that they are called Geiko after they first is apprentice as Maiko.
You know that this man is a Japanese who originated in Kyoto right? You seriously comparing what you read to what he knows? He never mentioned prostitute. You did.
Geisha aren't the only people in the red light districts of old. There were also yuujo, taikomochi, and the oiran. Nowhere in this video did Shogo say Geisha were prostitutes, so maybe you are the one who needs to actually do some research. Shogo is actually from Kyoto, btw.
@@MingSantos I think the OP doesn't understand what red light district meant and thought that red light district meant prostitution alley or something 🤷♀️
When we were in Tokyo, my wife purchased an obi but when she saw how difficult it was to tie, she got a pre-tied one too.
This takes me back..so many fond memories

I recently purchased my first kimono and I have to say that the kimono is exquisitely beautiful not only as clothing but as an art form as well 🌹❤️
I love them all but I do have two favorites. The long trailing obi that the Maiko’s wear -I have always thought it was so glamorous and My second favorite one is the Fukura Suzume-so pretty!
bruh and they got those little crests and everything, and it makes the maiko look kinda small somehow, the whole get up is so darned precious
How do you choose which obi to wear with which kimono when it comes to colours and patterns?
Are there any do's and don'ts?
Thank you for making interesting and fun videos about Japanese culture!

This was fascinating, I hope to one day wear a kimono with a beautiful obi! I think the Fukura-suzume is my favorite ❤️
I have never ask this question out of respect. I'm glad you ask for me since now I know why the OBI belt exist in the first place.
They are beautiful in any occasion.

obi-wan's obi, tied using the art of obigami :-)

It might not be as interesting to some but I'd like to hear about men's obi! Are there any sort of "rules" or traditions about men's obi?
I would like to ask about that too

Don't think too poorly of me, but I think my favorite way of tying us the ribbon-taiko.

Taiko knot ugh autocorrect strikes again.
Can you please talk about the kenmu restoration and the tanegashma big fan of the o zutsu tanegashima
Funny he posted this video just when I began looking to buy an obi for my yukata. lol
I have quite a few OBI... on my CDs!
I liked the way we tied our judo gi obi’s. A simple square knot. Left over right and under, right over left and under and your done!

I know this is a bit random out of nowhere but…
I got Thoma’s trailer (genshin impact) before the video starts
How would you recommend me an American, to get a kimono. I’ve been looking for outfitters and they’re only available in New York.
Man that looks as complicated as wearing medieval or a samurai armour. Feels like you need two helpers to get dressed in it.
As a kid i thought the obi was a kind of bag.
I know you suggest speeding the video up, but I prefer the slow and clear talking.
I think the information that there is a type of obi for men and various ways of wearing them should be mentioned too.

I always see sailor uniforms and western style uniforms but i ask myself if in japan people use kimono as uniform too ?
At least it's not a windsor knot.
so, this is the power of fashion😂
Hmmmmmmmm.
Hmmmmmm 🤔

Only the womens obi and kimono are ever talked about 😭

11th comment and im finally early
Is it true that people used Obi to hang themselves when shamed?
I know that’s how I want to go
