i've owned kimono and yukata for about 6 yrs, honestly no idea why I didn't think that they could be combine with western styles! i learned all the parts and how to dress properly in kimono, so i'm excited to try this newer trend 💕 thank you for introducing this to your viewers! the combos all looked very cute as well 🥰
Kimono is one of the most beautiful ways of dressing, but yes I can certainly see that it would be difficult in daily life. I just love how this is a modern twist on it and a way to bring it back and make it more accessible for so many people to wear it.
A lot of these looks remind me of Taisho-era style, where Western and Japanese clothing started coming together, as you mentioned in the video! Very stylish and very informative!
These looks so remind me of the wonderful old "Kimono-hime" magazines made during the 2000s! Such cute eclectic styling. This video makes me realize that Taisho era kimono looks are my favorite style... Women on the move! I guess I need to read some "Taisho-roman" manga 😊
I will say, I find the Meiji and Taisho period a really interesting time in Japan. Especially when it comes to fashion, I really like the mix of Western and Traditional Japanese clothing
So cute! Really opens up the world of kimono. I would TOTALLY wear that second outfit. 😍 I wonder if there are any more masculine styles for guys to wear. I'd love to see that!
I loved this video and I agree with you - that would be cool. I imagine that the shorter male "kimono" (they may be called something else) could easily be worn with ordinary trousers or even jeans, and could potentially be used less tightly closed as a jacket. They could actually be adapted to have the side slit, to allow ties to be incorporated so that an additional belt was not required. Actually, it occurs to me that the female Kimono could have ties added so that perhaps the elastic back belt was replaced. Never mind, just let me entirely redesign all your national dress 🙄😃
I already made up my mind when I was studying in Japan: Japanese are the most stylish people, fashion wise. And you guys confirm it. Awesome video as usual.
The first one I actually used for an original character and cosplay. I made a a short style kimono and used a corset belt and made a silk bow that I attached to the back of the belt. It was a really fun style!
I love to see you 2 co-parenting in your everyday life💜 where I am from alot of men dont take part in parenting so its so nice to see you both working on the channel AND taking care of you beautiful daughters together😊
When it comes to Japanese street fashion, I've seen so many styles of wearing kimono that weren't traditional. It amazes me every time I visit those fashion pages, which focus on Japanese street fashion. 😍
@@9Tailsfan Rurouni Kenshin was one of my childhood favorites. But the style didn't just remind me of it, I've read and watched quite a few manga and anime set in the Meiji/Taisho era.
Each combination is interesting & fascinating art form. I have soft spot towards Taisho Era fashion. It is one of the most unique timeline in Japanese fashion where western influence begin fuse into Japanese culture creating a vibrant cocktail of outfit.
For people who only speak English, in addition to the wonderful kimono experts suggested in the description, Billy Matsunaga is a great channel to learn about kimono fashion. She's a fully certified kimono teacher and since she speaks japanese she can always point viewers to authentic sources :)!
Very cool and lovely looks. Kimono are so versatilve; I personally enjoy layering them with trumpet skirts. Having the ability to play with folds, lengths and texture really opens up creative possibilities. I first started messing around with my kimonos after receiving one that arrived being much shorter than listed. Having inspiration to experiment like this extends usage and creates so many new possibilities.
Certainly interesting how much detail and thought is put into just dressing up in tradition clothes, and combining it with the simplicity of the western clothes just brings out the beuty. Love it :)
I do this sort of thing all the time with my haori. I have a blue and green one and a bright orange and yellow one. I never thought to do the same with my actual kimono, these styles are so cute! Thank you Shogo-san!
I love the style that I see quite a few Japanese women wear. Often times this style of dress and also often times a blouse that is sort of frilly or lacy like the one that was used here. It's a very attractive style.
So reassuring to see that the blending of Japanese and Western clothes is becoming popular - a full kimono outfit is a bit beyond me at present! Thank you! ❤️ I do have a question, though - for the second look with the skirt, could a haori be used instead of a full kimono?
I guess it would depend. Haori are like jackets for kimono so I imagine it would depend on how thick the material is. I'm sure since haori are shorter it would be easier than having to fold up all the material of a kimono.
The only issue would be that haori are not designed to be crossed over like a kimono; they just hang straight down framing the crossed collars of kimono & juban. So you might not have enough fabric to cross over.
lovely combinations, very creative executions too. i like the idea of using western clothing as the underlayer, it has some interesting details and contrasting design elements in places where you wouldnt think over them too much, but adds a lot to it now, an idea. and possibly a fun challenge, is there a possibility of combining the western style of men's suits with a kimono? 👀
Unusual for a gaijin, I've been wearing kimono since I was 7, since my parents had many Japanes friends, and can wear it like like a "professional." I started collecting vintage kimono in the '80's because I loved their artistry. But 30 years ago, I started getting creative. playing mix-and-match with Western clothing, because I wanted to wear Japanese clothing all the time! I've done all these variations, and also wear obi with Western dresses or in place of a belt, and wear haori like jackets. It looks like the rest of the world is catching up with me, and I love it!
I love the mix of clothing and the fact that you can just put a modern spin on traditional clothing. Definitely going to check out the description. Does anyone know if there is comparable things to this for different more traditional clothing of different cultures as well?
I love so much this mixed style. When I found out about the Taisho era and how from Meiji to Showa there was people mixing traditional Japanese clothing and western touches and accessories. Nowadays, I find a lot of modern photos and I'm delighted.
This was wonderful! Thank you and the ladies so much. I am bigger than most Japanese, but I dearly love to wear kimono and finding one that will go all the way around me and have the proper overlap is very, very difficult. My solution was to purchase a skirt that matches one of the colors of the kimono and so it's what shows (instead of the juban) should the kimono flap open too much. Apparently, I'm more in fashion than I realized.
This takes me back... to like 2004. I have Kimono and it's hella hard to find ones that fit a 177.8cm tall lady like myself. Thankfully, the pattern for a kimono is not particularly complicated. Now I have more ideas for what to do with my shorter kimono. Thank you.
What fun, creative kitsuke! I had never thought to combine wafuku and yofuku before, but now I think I will try it myself. Thank you very much, Shogo, Harumi, Tomoko, and of course baby Nagi!
Really love this video. I love the fashion of taisho era, and I have seen friends dressing up with a mix of japanese traditional clothes and western fashion like the bowler hat, etc, for many years so this feel very comfortable to me. They were influenced by the street fashion in japan as well as the fashion taisho era. ALso, because my country is too hot and we cannot wear too many layers
Very beautiful, ladies! It's amazing what a change of hats can do. With the wide brim hat, Tomoko and Harumi look like retro schoolgirls. But with the beret, Harumi looks like a school teacher. Also, I love that color combo of the brown with the burgundy skirt. Great Fall colors, great choice Harumi!!
This was such a lovely video. I've always loved how kimono looked since I first saw it maybe 18 years ago as a kid. Pretty recently, I've made an impulse buy with an obi. I studied how to tie it and when I finally succeeded I was like ''Wow... This is pretty constraining'' haha I was worried it was kinda frowned upon to wear kimono in a more casual way or not the ''proper'' way, so seeing this video I'm glad to hear Japanese women think wearing a kimono can be difficult too at times and it's okay to incorporate other items! I love the hakama style and want to wear it more often daily ^^
I love this! I still have 6 or so kimono (plus accessories) but as a woman with mostly German ancestry...the straight kimono silouette isn't a flattering on me. I'm looking forward to putting out my kimono and wearing them with my long skirts!
Omg finally! Been seeing this all over IG and wanted to hop in. I was so hesitant to really dive into this trend but uour video is definitely encouraging me to do so. Thank you
Because I'm a heavier person it was hard to fit the yukata at the ryokan where we stayed when we visited Japan (3 years ago!). The 2nd style would suit me better, I think. I have a haori and would like to wear it with western clothes. I'll check out some of the other videos.
Wow that's so cool! Clothes in general are some of my favorite aspects to cultural diversity and seeing these mix ups is just so incredibly interesting. Especially for poeple like me who are extremely into aesthetics of clothing as a whole. That was an awesome video and also one of my favorite ones you've made so far because I did not only learn so much interesting stuff about tradtional japanese clothing but we also got such a cool look into what the combination of cultur can look like. It just let's the imagination run wild, thinking of all the possibilities. It would be so awesome to see more like this. I really hope there will be something like this for men's waer too, that would be sooooo interesting. Like you could just make a whole series of videos like this. Keep it up guys. Stay safe and well.
Amazing video and Shogo is there such a thing as a Work-Kimono? E.g. One people wear to the office? I do know (Thanks to you) There's formal ones for ceremonies like weddings and more colourful ones for Festivals/Parties but not sure if there's such a thing lik ea Business-Kimono. Like a certain type of suit for men in my case is over here in the west. (so not too flashy or loud as it were)
Have you made a video about traditional headwear or head cover worn in Japan? Like how it would evolve through the ages or how would men and women wear the same or different head wear 😁
i found it interesting how different you used the first belt as in the uk (im not sure about other places) that type of belt is actually called a corset and it would be used as underclothes to get more of an hourglass figure kind of like if an obi was used in place of a juban
When I saw Haruhime wear the one with the skirt/belt, then put on the hat - first thing I thought was "school girl." She looked so much younger and kawaii!! I've recently been re-watching Hayate the Combat Butler, and did you say that your second daughter's name is Nagi? Hmmm - I know people in the states had a tendency to name kids after media personalities, just wondering there.
All outfits were amazing, except for some details, but it's personal taste. Both ladies were 👌 Next time it's yours and Kazu's turn... That would be awesome 😂😎

This video is amazing I love all the different styles! But I'm curious about similar looks like these but masculine ones instead, that would be cool to learn about!
Historically, did many people actually wear fancy kimono, or was it just the wealthy 1%. Similar to the way we think all Victorian women wore big pretty dresses, when that was really o ly the wealthy 1%. But in hindsight we seem to think everyone had this opportunity in the past when it wasn't true. Cam you talk more about what people wore day to day in historical Japan? Thank you Shogo! ☆

I loved the ideas especially the last one i think might be a traditional serious Japanese business woman style
I love these looks! You look absolutely beautiful ladies.
I wish i could wear clothes like this everyday. All of the outfit she tried are beautiful!!❤
14:00 i loved this style so much!! such a cool video :)
That’s the coolest thing I’ve ever seen in my life
Because I'm a heavier person it was hard to fit the yukata at the ryokan where we stayed when we visited Japan (3 years ago!).
🤍💗🤍💗 These styles are so cute! I hope this becomes a little more mainstream.
All the SJW Twitter puritans who screech about "cultural appropriation " would probably drop dead from shock if they saw this.
(so not too flashy or loud as it were)
What would be really cute, would to wear the blouse as in the last style, and the skirt like in the second style.
I love your videos about Kimono culture! thank you!
Have you made a video about traditional headwear or head cover worn in Japan? Like how it would evolve through the ages or how would men and women wear the same or different head wear 😁
Those are some very very cute outfits!!!
i found it interesting how different you used the first belt as in the uk (im not sure about other places) that type of belt is actually called a corset and it would be used as underclothes to get more of an hourglass figure kind of like if an obi was used in place of a juban
All three outfits are so cute! I love this style!
This was so much fun. I am looking up kimono street fashion. I hope you do more.
All outfits were amazing, except for some details, but it's personal taste. Both ladies were 👌
Next time it's yours and Kazu's turn... That would be awesome 😂😎

oh, girls, you are so beautifilull, thank you for showing us these fascinating looks!
Well, it's not like Japan hasn't experimented with these concepts before. The Showa Period was onto something at least.
I love Tomoko's laugh. It's infectious. Arigato Shogo, I enjoy you videos.
It's like a Kyoto-Paris chick hybrid style. Love it.
Fusion-wear kimonos look very cool!
This video is amazing I love all the different styles! But I'm curious about similar looks like these but masculine ones instead, that would be cool to learn about!
The second style was my favourite!
Meiji Restoration chic is the next big thing.
I know I'm only gaijin but that was very impresive part for me. Beutyfull and style.
thanks for the wholesome internet content. Great Video!
These are all so beautiful!!
your videos are always so entertaining and well made! Thank you! love from Australia
