There is so much to learn from Japan. The way they still preserved their culture and infused it with modernization instead of completely get into western influence really shows the soft power of Japan. That's why in India we are building shinkasen train instead of any other bullet train bc of quality. Indian culture also needed to be infused with mordernisation instead of having a colonial idea that it is primitive.
Do you think you would be able to make a video on eating gluten free or with allergies in Japan? I saw your gluten free okonomiyaki video (funnily, just last week my husband was talking about trying to make some at home, I need to share that video with him ^_^) and as someone with celiac disease, my biggest worry if I ever somehow get that slim chance of being able to visit Japan, that I would wind up sick and unable to enjoy the trip because of difficulty finding food that's safe or worse, wind up hospitalized.
I love the thing about having multiple obi for each kimono. It really shows how alike people are that “spice up or expand your wardrobe with accessories” is a fairly universal concept. Me buying a new wrap and a Japanese woman 100 years ago buying a new obi were both thinking “yeah, this will go great with that thing I already have, and dress it up without breaking the bank” and I find that wonderful.
As a person that has being wearing kimono for more than 4 years, all of my kimonos normally are from showa period, since i feel they arent the same as modern ones, Yaya's kimono shop is a dream for all the Instagram international kimono community ♡
That shop assistant/owner is so knowledgeable and an absolute peach to work with. I would feel very confidant purchasing the right kimono and accessories if she were helping me.
Even though I used to be a kimono dealer here in California, and have a couple hundred in my personal collection, this gives me kimono lust. As someone who has very long hair, I love and wear kanzashi, too, though I only have a few of those. I've bought mostly online, or (for myself) in shops in San Francisco. I'd love to visit a shop like this one!
I might also mention that I wear haori at least twice a week, yukata frequently, obi instead of a belt or sash now and then, and look for excuses to dress up in more formal vintage kimono.
can i ask you how did you wash them ? is it okay with a washing machine , did they have a label on it who explain how you have to do it ? it's one of the reason i'm easitant to buy one (yukata will be the way to go for my first one ) thanks for the answer in advance
What a fun outing. I especially loved the third kimono Tomoko tried on. I was surprised that it seemed the obi are more expensive than the kimono but the advice was to have multiple obi per kimono to change the look
The explanations were quite interesting and offered knowledge, the kimono were stunningly breathtaking, the staff lady seemed very attentive and nice, and of course Shogo-san and his family were wonderful as always!!! Your videos are always 10/10!
Watching this video makes me want to get out and wear my kimono! All of mine are vintage or antique. There's an importer I order bulk boxes through to recycle the garment fabric from. Sometimes they slip in a kimono, obi, or haori that's still in near-perfect condition. I always keep these to wear or give to friends as gifts. I have also bought kimono to wear from them. I'm so envious of all of the accessories shown! The most difficult part about kimono for me is finding the right size. I am very tall and admit some of my kimono are not the proper size for me.
Would you be willing to share your source for the bulk boxes? That's so interesting, like a treasure hunt. I love sewing and crafting and have a thing for beautiful fabrics. :)
I read somewhere that the intricate designs on the lining of kimono and juban gained popularity after noblemen started condemning lower class citizens for wearing kimono with flashy patterns, as it merged the gap between lower and higher class, so after that lower class people would put beautiful designs on the inside of their robes to still be able to express yourself a little without getting punished for it. Although I don't remember the source so it might be just a theory :(
Oh my gosh, for the first time I have found a Twin Kimono in the wild! The super fashionable lady at this kimono store is wearing a purple komon with a small allover white floral pattern, and I have one that is almost identical!! I declare myself a future customer of this shop 🙏
That was absolutely wonderful! The Kimonos you picked out were so Beautiful. I Loved them all, it would be so hard to pick. So if I were Harumi or Tomoko I would have bought them all!
The shop owner is wonderful. I thought they knew her personally because she kept referencing their clothes. I'm definitely visiting this shop when I visit Japan. ❤
This was so fun to watch! I've been amassing a vintage kimono/obi collection for the past 2 years now from a seller in Osaka. I'm happy to say I've just my 50th piece with a stunning, white and gold Uchikake! It is very addicting!
Great video overal and I was really surprised to learn the colourful ones were the actual antiques. (They do look beautiful though and it's amazing they still have such bright and deep colours after all these years) Also : Harumi's English is really improving, keep it up!
The purple kimono with the plum blossoms looked so beautiful I wanted to cry. I loved that style and wanted to leap through the screen to buy it even though I just bought to 2 more kimono and have nowhere to wear them 🤣
This is my favorite video of yours ever. I love that you are promoting local 京都 shops. This is an in-depth experience that a visitor could actually have, and the video is packed with knowledge. These shows are a whole new twist on your channel, and I just love them! 🙂好きです! ♥
You should make more Episodes about Kimono Fashion! Just, the choices for Men are so Limited. Also, when Kimonos are in Question, I LOVE Silk ones! I don't want to buy Polyester ones. You should Mention Silk ones more often!
This was an amazing video. All of you looked very elegant and graceful in those kimono. I can only imagine how beautiful it would be to see them here in the Land of Falling Waters.
I love kimonos, they are one of the greatest traditional and cultural garments in the world. I have an idea! You should do a Tomoko face reveal after gaining a certain amount of subscribers! She is so elegant and wise.
Antique kimonos have size (people in the past were often short, mentioned this video) and cloth strength issues, so should take that into consideration. As an example, my length of clothing is 140cm and the sleeve length is about 85cm, that size is hard to find.
I would go there easily. I would love to buy a kimono. I have a antique Yukata from around the early 1700s I rescued from an Antique store. I say rescue because it needed some help. There were threads coming undone and it was dirty. Lucky enough I have a Japanese friend that could restore it without taking away from the value.🙂
I adore Kimono! Especially antique kimono! However, sadly, I'm kinda tall and bigger (fat, but also I have big bone structure) so I'd probably never be able to wear lovely antiques. Maybe some modern ones designed to resemble antiques? I'm sure there would be a market for it!
I learned to sew my own kimonos for cosplay purposes. I'm not mastered it yet, but I get better and learn something new with each kimono. I know Billy Matsunaga has a tutorial how to make a basic kimono and what measurements you need. She is a licensed kimono teacher and she has a lot of videos about the subject.
Tomoko! 💖 the ladies looked beautiful. The antique kimono are amazing. The amount of talent it would take to make such detailed textiles is impressive. Whenever I meet a skilled craftsperson I will always tell them how much their skills are appreciated. Very few now stick with a craft like this long enough to become a master. The shop lady is a graceful and lovely lady and her knowledge seems quite deep.
Don't let me go inside this shop ! I know I will want to see (and certainly buy) all the kimono, obi & other kitsuke accessoiries !! I felt in love with the tsuzure-ori obi we see at 25:19, I didn't know that this kind of obi with threads popping out exist :o ! By the way and more seriously, we see they have antique obidome. They are few artisans left able to make obidome nowadays so I wonder if okiya would be interested to buy these ones (even if the maiko's pocchiri are usually a little bigger than the ones we see). Thank you for this extraordinary video, we have discovered a wonderful shop, marvelous kimono & obi with many informations about them !!
this is so cool to learn about the difference between modern kimono and the antique kimono along with the various obi and the accessories that go with the kimono outfit for both men and women.
I've always adored the look of kimono. The contrast of the obi's pattern and colors with the kimono are fascinating! Wish I could find a shop like the one that couple went to here in the U.S.A......
I sincerely love all my vintage pieces, although I am Dutch so I'm quite tall I try to buy mostly antique/vintage pieces because they are much more vibrant and have so much history compared to the 'modern' ones I own. Never the same feeling or look, the history is what makes a garment special
I just love this video...when I lived in Japan we went kimono shopping and I bought the most lovely kimono and obi...I love them to this day...this video was so much fun to watch...
There are no Kimono shops where I live, sadly. I believe my best option is a 4.5 hour drive to Japantown in San Francisco. Regardless, I am inspired by these beautiful pieces. Some day I will find myself a kimono!
As a textile enthusiast learning Japanese I got a lot of new vocabulary from this video! I'm visiting Kyoto next month and watching everything on your channel is really getting me hyped up!
I love this video. Such a great insight into the purchasing of kimonos and accessories. The lady was so knowledgeable and helpful. This shop is definitely going on my to do list when I visit Japan as I love kimonos and hope to add to my collection.
this is, so far, my favourite of your RUclips. I have learned so much and understand the why's of colour and co-ordination of kimono and obi etc. thank you
There is a place near the Mississippi River in Minnesota that is one of the few places that sells traditional wedding kimono in the United States. The owner invited us inside and I was allowed to try one on. This was over ten years ago, it was cool to see them up close! Edit: it’s in Wabasha and it’s still open! It’s called Wind Whisper West Kimono Gallery!

Hello everyone! Im from Spain (Europe), I live in Barcelona a city by the sea....I am a teacher....I love japanese culture and I deeply appreciate this video and that you make it. Last year I started kitsuke classes....culture is of value, traditional japanese clothing like kimono are beautiful, although I am not japanese I embrace japanese culture fron the other side of the word. How beautiful is that japanese culture have crossed borders.....let's enjoy kimono! Have a nice day everyone❤
When we were all wearing maks here on the U.S. I made a long, straight skirt and the leftover fabric into masks. It WAS fun to match! It brightened the somber mood of having to wear masks a little.
No trip to Kyoto is complete with a visit to Yaya! The owner is the nicest lady, and if you are looking for something specific, she is happy to pull items out that you might like. This video makes me miss kimono shopping so much!
Thank you for this wonderful insight to kimono. I have many pieces displayed of Japanese art. To own a antique kimono would be my dream. Seeing this shop filled with true art pieces is a dream.
Thank you so much for taking us shopping with you. This video is so helpful and answered several questions for me. The ladies look so lovely in the kimonos (me: I'll take one of each, please!!!). And Mr. Shogo is handsome as always. Love Baby Sleeping Beauty as well! I truly appreciate the shopkeeper for all that she does. Thank you again so very much! Take care and be safe!! 😊💖🙏
3/4 of the stores shelf space dedicated to Women's Kimono's 1/16 of the stores shelf space dedicated to Men's Kimono's Glad to see that ratio is a universal truth no matter what country you shop in. 😏
OMG‼️ I just watched this program and took my breath away I just loved you shopping trip. What a fabulous shop•••so much beauty!! Thank you so much for you video.
Thank you so much for such an informative and beautiful video! My favorite was the one with the red lining from Showa period (I love red and vibrant pink). I have deep appreciation for your culture, ancient and modern. I would love to see more recommendations about Women's silk kimonos and where I could potentially buy one online. Wearing an original affordable Kimono, even before visit Japan, would already be a dream coming true for me. Thank you in advance! Arigato gosaimas!🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸
Wow! All of the fabrics were so beautiful. And I liked learning the different ways a kimono and obi can match and make a statement. Here in Vermont USA we wear jeans, tees and flannel shirts, but I've just fantasized about owning and wearing a kimono with a few obi. I wonder what colors and patterns would suit an older woman? This is the second Let's ask Shogo video I've watched. It's nice to meet you, Tomoko and your little girl. Thanks for putting your channel out there! 😊
Just in love with very typical Japanese expression to show you are amaze or surprise. Although I lived in Tokyo, I only bought my kimono during trips in Kyoto.
Wow, what a beautiful episode! As a man, I would have loved to have let the shop with the 3-bells kimono. I even liked the obi that she matched it with.
oh, this brings back memories, I remember being in Kyoto and going to buy Kimono's for my mother and aunts and sister-in-law while I was over in Japan in the army, and oh what an experience that was. It was really fun do to they were not with me they were in the States so you can guess what a circus that was. No internet no google or anything at the time but luckily I was dating a Japanese girl at the time who helped me.
"He said that ultimate beauty is achieved when you focus on parts that cannot be seen without taking them off." This is the same with a woman's body. When the clothing only hint at the beauty that lies underneath does it actually enhance the beauty. To leave it a mystery as opposed to a clothing choice that basically shows everything.
Kimono can be so bright, colorful, vibrant and beautiful, demonstrating how much individuality the Japanese of the past seem to have. How and why is it that most modern Japanese seem to have lost that sense of individuality and favoring a "normal" or "common" decorum. Not to mention preferring "duller" colors for their fashion.
Wow! I can't believe these are antique! They look brand new. The colors are so vibrant and not faded at all! What's the secret? Is it only because they are made of silk? Modern clothing lose their colors after a couple of washes.
I got so much infos here thanks to your channel this is the perfect channel I was looking for .... And you daughter is tooooo... Cute... Love from India 🇮🇳🇮🇳
I was going to listen to this in the car but I can't because I want to see everything! I have a few kimono but only one that I suspect may be from the showa period. It has beautiful long sleeves and a large komon pattern.
I'm not sure where you live, but if you live in the U.S that has direct flights to Japan, you need like $4,000 for a trip of 2 weeks including air fare. Stay in hostels for cheap "housing", and buy food from convenient stores, or a place called Matsuya, very reasonable price for a meal like $7 with like rice and meat and miso soup. And buy the. JR PASS for unlimited shinkansen for 7 or 14 days. Just a few tips for you hihi... And no you don't need to know Japanese haha...

unfortunately shopping addiction is a real thing. Roughly 70% of my girl friends buy way too much and throw stuff away!

Yes! I have seen some modern furisode i really love. But the patterns and colors of vintage and antique kimono are so much more vibrant and varied.
Male or female?
Never enough of kimono episodes.

The kimonos are so beautiful!

Great Vidi! I love that it is just fine to combine Antique Obi with Modern Kimono. So much, so pretty 😍😍😍
Oh I love the idea of making the haori sleeves wider by inserting a stripe of a different fabric. It was so well done on the examples!

I'm fat also and I always wondered wether I'll be able to fit into kimonos, now I see antique ones are smaller, oh well.
I'm 5'5 and curvy. Luckily I only struggle with getting clothing over my thighs/hips, which wouldn't be a problem with kimonos.
I learned to sew my own kimonos for cosplay purposes. I'm not mastered it yet, but I get better and learn something new with each kimono.

They really should make face masks that match each kimono. The face needs to look stylish too even with the pandemic!
I’m just curious, but how did the shop collect the antique kimono? Did the previous owner of the antique kimono donate it to the shop?
Such beautiful presentation of these gorgeous fabrics and their history
The kimono & their accessories are so lovely!
Also those hats in the background.
The owner is so lovely that I want to buy a kimono now!❤️
3/4 of the stores shelf space dedicated to Women's Kimono's
1/16 of the stores shelf space dedicated to Men's Kimono's
Glad to see that ratio is a universal truth no matter what country you shop in.
😏
OMG‼️ I just watched this program and took my breath away I just loved you shopping trip. What a fabulous shop•••so much beauty!! Thank you so much for you video.
This is such a helpful video!! I'm definitely rewatching a couple times before shopping for kimono! Thank you!!
These are amazing 🤩
Its wonderful how happy you both are
Thank you so much for such an informative and beautiful video!
I was so happy tomoko choose the green i really like the green one on her.
I think red and orange suit harumi better becase her warmer skin tone.
Loved it! So interesting and beautiful!
Just in love with very typical Japanese expression to show you are amaze or surprise. Although I lived in Tokyo, I only bought my kimono during trips in Kyoto.
I would’ve gone for a huge kimono shopping spree at Yaya if it wasnt for the closed international borders
Truly so many beautiful antique kimono! Thanks for showing us such wonderful sights!
I love how you showed each person such as your wife and team mate. Really great video! Really enjoy all your videos. I hope you reach 2m!! Kampai 🥂
Love the autumn 🍂 theme!! BEAUTIFUL🤩🤩🤩🤩💥
"He said that ultimate beauty is achieved when you focus on parts that cannot be seen without taking them off."
This is the same with a woman's body. When the clothing only hint at the beauty that lies underneath does it actually enhance the beauty. To leave it a mystery as opposed to a clothing choice that basically shows everything.
I fall in love with that antique kimonos😍😍😍
Wow!!I totally like this kimono's,can you imagine I can totally see it in real life not just in animes, even though it is just through video vlog!!
I second that it felt like visiting a museum. Thank you for this lovely video
I will be in Kyoto soon and love Kimono so much! I look forward to adding to my collection and am so happy to learn more from you!
This was LOVELY! I learned terms and history and really enjoy that!
such beautiful patterns and colors, very pleasing to the eyes
Kimono can be so bright, colorful, vibrant and beautiful, demonstrating how much individuality the Japanese of the past seem to have.
How and why is it that most modern Japanese seem to have lost that sense of individuality and favoring a "normal" or "common" decorum. Not to mention preferring "duller" colors for their fashion.
Colors were beautiful. Would take me a week to pick one out❤
So to me the most striking thing was that women get fancy patterns and vibrant colors and men get burlap sacks.
Such beautiful fabrics!! Gosh Im so jealoussssss!
Wow! I can't believe these are antique! They look brand new. The colors are so vibrant and not faded at all! What's the secret? Is it only because they are made of silk? Modern clothing lose their colors after a couple of washes.
The red haori looked amazing on Harumi!
This was a very informative video. Thank you Shogo and Team.
I shopped on Japan Ebay to get an antique obi and the ties for my kimono. Everything arrived nicely wrapped.
This was so informative and helpful. Thank you.
Thank you for sharing this video. I have planned to visit this shop in my overseas holiday itinerary in August.
If I win the lottery I will fly to Japan and buy a dozen beautiful kimonos.
And no you don't need to know Japanese haha...
this is such a cool video~! very informative too!!
wow. The complexity’s are amazing… What a great, interesting vlog. I hope to be in Kyoto next April. I want to buy one…..
