Ford Territory No Start - DIY Test Will Work For Any Car

- What can stop a Ford from starting? Hmmm, I’d better leave that one alone!
Here is a simple diagnosis that can be applied to many different makes and models & is not that hard to do. Just make sure you have a correct wiring diagram as there a few different styles of relays.

Another problem I found with a no start on some early falcons BA/BF and maybe later ones. Bypassing the starter relay in conjunction with ignition on , you could end up running yourself or someone else over. If you are one of those people who never seem to apply the handbrake the car could drive off.
The issue is that the auto transmission selector cable breaks at the transmission end. Usually when you last park it up and you think it's in park.
No, want happens is the cable snaps and it is actually in R. Next morning turn the key no start. Check to see if it's not in D orR no selector lever is in Park.
Now get out and if you are a DIY person and you bypass the relay and you have left the ignition on you may run yourself over or do some major damage.
The first and simplest way to avoid this is look at the dash and check want the auto indicator lamp is saying, if the cable has broken it will most likely be in D OR R. Hope that helps anyone with a no start on a falcon.
They are notorious for bad connections at starter , Fried starters and particularly on the Territory the earth strap from chassis to engine.
Thanks for your comment Neil. Safety should be a priority when diagnosis anything
One step I add in this situation is tap the solenoid with your extension bars a couple of times. It has saved me a few times. I have also had the contacts in the solenoid weld shut which means the starter keeps engaged even after engine starts and tapping the solenoid may also help here.
Yes, the old 'hit with a hammer' trick works well!
Great video! I have owned my territory for about 2 years now. Pity I'm in South Africa. Very difficult to find spares for it here
Glad you enjoyed the video. I hope you find other videos on the channel useful. 😁
Good work is done.I'm very impress with your testing, but two 13mm bolts is easy to remove and install if you lift car up or put on ramp or jack stand for removing and refiting starter.
Hey Stevan,
For most other cars I would agree, but I did use a lift as well as the top bolt is hidden right up the top and pretty much impossible to get from below.
Thanks for your comment 👍
Thankyou for this video ,Car would not start due to faulty relay .i swapped the one from the high beam light slot (same relay type) and the car started.
I'm so glad the video helped! 😉👍
I used your multiple extensions method and this worked for me. Thanks for the vid! That top bolt is definitely a pain.
Glad the video helped. Ford design at it's best! 😉
replaced starter on an all wheel drive auto 2006. your video helped, extension method helped so much. but ford is now a four lettered word for me.
didnt help that the top bolt replaced with a 12mm, guess someone is still laughing.
@@metalskippy294 I hear ya! Some engineers must just laugh at some of the designs they palm off to us to work on. Glad the video helped. 🤗
top bolt is difficult, but with small extensions you can do it from underneath, did it about 5 years ago it was a pain
Hey NAZ BES,
Either way, the engineers did not design it for it to be repaired!
Thanks for your comment 😉
Thanks buddy, just found out it was just a faulty relay in my Terri after watching your vid.. Just wished I watched your video before I purchased my starter motor.. Let's hope I can get refund 😂 cheers
Glad it helped! 😉
Just did my BA Falcon Starter motor it was easy once you put the car on ramps (i had to lift it with a jack on the front cross member)pull out airbox so you can feel around I only used one extension with a ratshit for top bolt from under the car it was out in 5 minutes
buy a new bosch starter motor got mine from repco 109$au
its not that hard ! love the Oz Ford straight six pity those V6 euro 6's that put the starter under the manifold
Congrats on your repair! Check out where they keep the starter motor on this vehicle - I think it's a Bentley GT 6.0L W12.

I hope you find the problem quickly.

“Test will work on any car” Couldn’t do this test on my Tesla, fake news! Nice diagnosis mate!
Hmmm Browny - ya got me there!
But I guess, even on a Tesla, the testing procedures for relays would be similar 😉😁
@@MiracleMAX I don’t think there is a single relay in Teslas nowdays, i heard a while ago, because everything is controlled with CAN bus, they don’t even have fuses,
@@danielbrown5682 Ah, whatever happened to the good old days? So I guess they are using MOSFETs instead of relays.
I guess we have to keep up or get out! I'll be doing a EV course next month, ready to start teaching. Sorry, we don't have a Tesla, only a humble Kona 😁
I had a funny one years ago in my old xe falcon, I was in town and the starter wouldn't kick and I didn't have any tools to test anything so I grabbed the dogs chain and used it to jump the start solenoid and the car started straight up and took off backwards.. I hadn't put it in park properly 🤦♂️ luckily there wasn't anyone to close, crashing into someone would have made it even more embarrassing
Hey Mark,
Sounds like you had a few problems. Great thinking out of the box!
Thanks for sharing your comment 😉
Great video thank you so much for a well presented and understandable video 😊
Thanks Mike for your kind comment 👍😁
Good info buddy, well done 👍👌
Thanks 👍
Thanx max. Rekon my bf wagon needs starter. Takes few goes n sometimes nuthin. Bugga to get at.
I hope you can diagnose & repair it! Yup, not fun to get to...☹️
Grate vid mate very helpful.
Glad it helped
Hi mate is it possible to show few pics where it is installed as its very hard to find it .
Do you mean the starter motor? Go in through the rear of the LHF wheel under the car & look up.
ruclips.net/video/zMRB5wsdkao/видео.html
At the moment, my stop light flashes. Car and hand icon light. The click before I turn over, is when the light flashes. Then it doesn't allow for me to turn over. This happens 4 times out of 10. Any help appreciated. Thank you
What car do you have? Do you mean that the brake lights are flashing at the rear of the vehicle or the brake warning light on your dash flashes. Has any of the testing shown in the video been carried out?
Thank you so much for sharing
You are welcome. I hope the video was helpful 😉
@@MiracleMAX help a lot!!!Wondering if you have ever replace a Peugeot 207 cc convertible alternator.I am trying to to remove it but could not find a space as it is so tight.I have unbolted it but couldn’t find a way lol
@@malmotumotu5218 Sorry, I haven't. Some vehicles I have had to remove a section of the exhaust or unbolt the engine mounts to raise the engine to give clearance.
I did a quick search for 'replace alternator peugeot 207' and found several videos. Hope it goes well for you. 😊
@@MiracleMAX thank you and really appreciate that 🙏🏼
You are an awesome person
Thank you for your kind words 😊
First class, many thanks.
You are welcome David! 😉
I have a 2012 disel territory Ts. The car not going in in 3 gear. What can be the reason? Please help me.
From Melbourne Australia.
Hey Muhammad,
Is your Territory a manual or automatic transmission?
Sorry forgot to mention, its automatic
@@afaqstats Does it have any fault codes? What is the condition of the oil? Is the output speed sensor working correctly?
Mine is a similar problem. Territory 2008
Common Ford problems. 😉
Yep yep & yep but when the solenoid activator wire got 12v direct, starter worked perfectly, that relay area ? Mnnn! I did swap with a like for like relay but nothing at the solenoid activator wire ???
OK Phil,
Do you have a broken wire or voltage drop on that wire? Do you have 12 volts at the solenoid wire when attempting to crank?
How did you test the starter motor to state that the starter worked perfectly? Do you have good 12 volts on the main battery to starter wire during cranking? Have you done a voltage drop test at the battery ground? Is the ground wire going to the engine in good condition? Is the bolt tight?
Hi mate got a ford falcon 2015 no start and no power it’s had a front impact any idea cheers
What tests have you done so far? Is it crank no start, or no crank? Has this happened only after the impact? Does it have spark & injection? Do you have any fault codes?
Hi Max, I have the exact same car with the exact same problem and noones been able to help me so far.
Do you have a workshop in Sydney? Or can you recommend someone in Sydney? I know you’re based in Goulburn.
This has been happening for a few months now, what will happen if I don’t get it fixed?
You can contact me about details via Email
miraclemax3@hotmail.com
It's 4:00am in the morning and still taping on the starter motor
So have you been able to diagnose the fault?
Awesome mate💯
You are welcome!
Thanks for your subscription 😊
I did that rely test and starter works what now
Did you have power at the relay (30) and at the start position (86)? Was the ground good (85)? Did the starter work when you did the bypass test?
Great video! Thanks a lot. A pro mechanic replaced my starter motor on my Territory a year ago. Recently, the car started to be unresponsive, like the one in the video. After hitting the starter motor with a hammer, the car started again. But failed again after a week. I hit it again and made sure that the connections were good etc. The car starts again, but for how long!!? Do you think I should replace the started motor again?? It should fail after a year, right? Thanks a lot for your video anyway. Helped me a lot!
Hey Ben,
Is there warranty still available if you take it back to the mechanic?
@@MiracleMAX Thanks for your reply! Unfortunately, the warranty is over! I guess, I'll have to replace it myself! I'm just surprised that a starter motor can fail only after a year.
@@bendelaunay Have you confirmed that there is no voltage drop on either the positive cable to the starter or the ground circuit? Are you getting 12 volts to the starter solenoid during cranking?
@@MiracleMAX thanks for your reply. I didn't yet. I'm gonna check this out shortly. Thanks again
How did you go?
Hi what if you get nothing from the test light you show in the starter relay?
Which pin? 30, 87, 86 or 85? Did you have the ignition turned on when you tested it?
@@MiracleMAX pin 85 I think the negative one, yes ignition on
@@ricjohn2020 If it is negative, it won't have power there. Is the relay clicking? You should have power at 30 & either 85 or 86, depending on the design.
This video might explain it a bit better.
ruclips.net/video/hIy4p_Pkbug/видео.html
@@MiracleMAX not power, looking for the negative when ignition is on
@@ricjohn2020 Is this the same vehicle as the one shown? Have you checked the wiring diagram to make sure it is wired the same? You should be able to put your test light between pin 85 & 86, go to the crank position and it should light. Is yours automatic? Are you getting continuity through the park/neutral switch? Can you bypass pins 30 & 87 and get the engine to crank?
How do u gt pass the smart lock
Do you have an issue with your key? What is the actual problem?
hi max i have a 2009 sy territory have you ever come across when you crank it to start it feels like it hydrolocks for a split second almost like it over advances cranks then prefires then recranks and starts other than that it is a real trooper but it does it hot or cold but it doesn't do it all the time and no codes cheers glenn
How is the battery condition? How much inrush current is drawn on the initial turn on of the starter?
@@MiracleMAX battery is 6 months old 2nd starter 2nd ignition switch it almost feels like the engine is too far advanced when it plays up all earths and powers are clean it doesn't do it all the time but when it does it's frustrating
@@glennarnold3970 Is the timing chain stretched? Can you do a cam/crankshaft correlation?
I have a 07 ford territory awd the battery went flat put another battery in and it wont start its cranking but no start it was driving and starting fine before i parked it up for a month and the battery died do they have a security feature also my driver window motor stopped and now the window wont go all the way up would this be a security feature cheers
Did you put ALL the wires back onto the battery terminals? Are there any fuses blown? Did you use a new battery? Did you do all the tests shown in the video? Have you tried disconnecting the battery again for maybe 20 minutes to allow the PCM to reset?
How long of an extension bar (or combination of extension bars) is needed for that top nut?
Hey Mathew,
Sorry, it's been some time since I did this repair, but just think of the length of the engine and that should give you some idea. I just happen to have quite a few extension bars and was able to add them until I got what I needed. It's best to use a series of smaller ones, as you have to get past the radiator to get to the correct angle.
@@MiracleMAX thanks.
Only the best engine ever mare. ..
I guess everyone is entitled to their opinion 😁
@@MiracleMAX hard to kill trust me i have tried. Had ine with 1.2 million ks on it. There is a reason why all the taxis were falcons in the end of LPG taxi fleets.
The components that fail in falcons are all made by other companies.
@@TRAVERSE_ADV I have no trouble with Barras - I just like to stir and besides.....Fords pay my rent 🤣🤣
@@MiracleMAX hahaha yeah true, thats why everytime I meet a job that doesn't need a hoist I buy tools and DIY. Tools are cheaper than mechanics haha. Being a mechanical fitter also helps .
@@TRAVERSE_ADV Good job 👍
i use a cheap 12v buzzer instrad of a globe for testing no need to see it u can hear it...
Great idea! Whatever gets your attention. 👍😉
This should be named
Won't crank
Not Won't start(cranking but no start)

Where are you located?
NSW. You can contact me via Email at miraclemax3@hotmail.com
I've replaced the starter and the starter still clicks. I've hooked the car up to another car just incase it was the battery. Still just clicks. I'm thinking it's the positive cable from battery to starter. The starter is getting power.
The starter is a a hole to replace. Luckily there was no Australian around when I was doing it. Last time I buy a falcon
Hey Mike,
What was the voltage at the starter motor when cranking? Have you done the testing at the starter like shown in the video?
I worked on a Jackaroo recently with a similar fault. The process is the same.
ruclips.net/video/G_TmxdXdFWM/видео.html
@@MiracleMAX I don't know. Don't have the gear to check.
I've switched fuse's over. Only thing lift I can think of is the power supply.
@@mvb88 Hey Mike, it might be easier to buy a cheap multimeter & do some testing before you replace any more parts. Let us know what you find. Ford's.....am I right?
Can get both bolts from underneath 13mm
@petergiourelas3753 yeah but they are in a awkward place with minimal room to work in. Now understand why my dad only brought old cars.
