Sometimes you have to use common sense. We can interfere too much with God's perfection of wildlife and create problems for them.
Help them but, don't let them become dependent. Don't forget that sickness can strike a person anytime. Well, if that happens then you know the rest of the story.

My mom would have loved you to pieces! She used to sit on the swing, underneath two big walnut trees in her backyard and watch the hummingbirds and squirrels. Ten years ago when she passed away, instead of a traditional urn for her ashes, we chose one that was made out of walnut, with hummingbirds carved into the front it. It's so beautiful and it represents her spirit and her personality, perfectly.

Thank you, Robbie and Gary, for showing the proper way to feed hummingbirds. I'm still amazed that so many people still believe that honey and natural sugars are better. They are not. Organic and raw/natural cane sugars contain *iron*, which is harmful to hummingbirds. Honey-water solutions quickly become toxic and deadly. Honey rapidly *ferments* and cultures a deadly bacterium. Water dilution causes microorganism to grow.
So no raw or pasteurized honey. And no brown sugar, raw cane sugar, turbinado, demerara, sucanat, panela, muscovado, powdered confectioners sugar, coconut sugar, barley malt, brown rice syrup, corn syrup, maple syrup, molasses, or agave nectar. No artificial sweeteners, coloring or flavors.
The 1:4 white granulated cane sugar-water (nectar) formula is only, as you say, a SUPPLEMENTAL energy source. Hummingbirds get protein, minerals and other nutrients from insects and live plants. They will get everything they require from mother nature.

So you think GMO BEET SUGAR is better than unprocessed sugar ? What did people feed them 150 years ago ? The organic sugar /iron myth came up from birds exclusively kept in captivity ...l tend to believe animals kept caged are derived of what else they are supposed to eat ... mosquitoes, spiders, small beetles .. which makes them susceptible to diseases disorders of incalculable array . Which probably was a side issue of their captivity not of sugar .

In my youth, my mother and I had 5-8 clans feeding at the various feeders we had out. One of the things we loved to see was when the newly fledged babies would come to feed. Normally the adults, especially the clan leaders, would be jousting for feeding rights and position. Yet when the babies showed up all of the adults would go find a perch. They were guarding the babies. When the young had finished the adults went back to their squabbles. It was so funny to watch! Adults, even those that had fledged that season and had not yet mated, all worked together to protected all of the babies. Too bad humans can't take a lesson from these feathered jewels. Some folks say that birds are "Bird Brained" meaning they aren't very smart, but I wonder. I don't know how to build a nest, they do it without hands... I couldn't, ... could you?

When I lived in Little Rock I was known as hummingbird lady at my apartment complex. I made my own nectar the same way except I added a little bit of strawberry jello mix to it. I had five feeders that I refilled every day after work. I always wore my red robe and they would come to me and feed out of my hand as I held the feeder. I kept hanging pots of red geraniums. Fun days.

I decided to move it up on my porch by my door. As I moved it I heard that cartoon speed beat approach over my shoulder. He had arrived. I told him to give me a few minutes. It's in place and today, we have an overcast, blustery day with gusty winds, and 3-4 of them are fighting over it. Much amusing traffic. One perches, but most fly and eat on the wing. They are a delight. I am shopping now for more feeders.
