Ryobi stopped making this garage door opener because of a patent infringement. Ryobi was sued by Chamberlain and it was upheld in court. They are currently not allowed to make garage door openers until 2023. So my guess is that whenever they can make one next year, they will come out with a bad *ss new garage door opener.

I knew they got sued and read a lot of the details of how and why - I'm glad to hear that now in 2023 they may be coming back - I have the 201 and smaller one and wish for the app to start being supported (working) again along with possibly new modules - as I understand it the suit was mainly around the battery backup feature rather the wifi operation or module concept but I've also heard that the in garage remote/controller for the modules was also an issue. If I had to replace my Ryobi GDO I'd for sure not pick Chamberlin.

Ryobi stopped making so many products this past year! I know because I buy them in closeout for resale (among other brands also), but I see 1st hand what tools are discontinued & still in fairly high demand. Great video David!

Maybe you have a screw drive .One of my screw drives in the past was so loud, people would duck down when I closed it.

I agree, they made a great opener, but they seemed to have cut their loses when they lost the lawsuit with Chamberlain. I have the first and the best model which was grandfather in before the lawsuit. It looks like you have the newer model that they had to micky mouse around the patent issue and add that wireless module and tilt sensor, which mine doesn't need. Since the lawsuit, they no longer have a garage door opener only support team, the camera will no longer work, and the alerts that they sent out when the door was opened or closed, no longer work. I have heard a rumor that the patent will run out soon or it might have by now, that they may come out again with an opener, but I think they may let the whole thing go and shut down the server, which will kill all operations from the App. I hope I am wrong, because it is my favorite opener. i do have the Chamberlain on one of my other doors, which also can be operated through an App. and does send alerts when opened or closed, but they only offer a camera. They do have an auto close feature, which is really handy, if you drive off and forget to close it.

Had. Nothing but problems with this thing, camera accessory died, air pump went through 2 and the air tube breaks off (and I babied it). WiFi stopped working entirely, laser parking assist still works and the power cable accessory and Bluetooth speaker still works as well. I’m thinking of finally replacing this unit sadly, I don’t want to but I can’t even open and close the garage door without the app anymore and I hooked up MyQ to it to get the smart door sensor working and sadly that went out because the garage door won’t pair anymore. I had it for about 6 years.

  • @timmckishen4226
    @timmckishen4226 2 года назад +1

Ryobi was sued for patent infringement, that is why they switched between a wired connection vs. the wireless connection which sucked royaly. I bought it before the wireless, the down function failed and they warranty replaced the whole opener with a wireless version, that still worked with the old wired system flawlessly but also had the wireless controller that works intermittently, I have to wave the main controller around to get it to work . I open and close the door 20 times a night, it failed in 3 years and now 3 years later, it is acting up. It is in my wood shop and once a month it won't go down, just beeps incessantly till unplugged as follows. I have to reset the stop start parameters more and more frequently. (The fix) disconnect the door trolley / unplug it without a battery inserted for 5 minutes / hold the up arrow on the control panel on the opener behind the fold down door till it flashes / adjust it to any position, hit the s button to save / hold the down button till flashing ( repeat till incessant beeping alarm isn't present) / press the up down buttons back and forth, button mashing like a 80's video game till the trolley moves down, set the trolley (repeat the power down if this fails and the beeping persists) / run the up then down set mode to complete the set up / repeat set up and set the door to open and close where you want it, rinse repeat once or twice a month unexpectedly. I am the uncommon user, lots of open and close cycles, wore the teeth off my original opener. I agree, great opener, just fiddly.

I have the older 200 model, and even though it doesn't have the battery back up. It has everything else and excepts all +1 accessories. Im with you, it's one of the most innovative products and Chamberlin knows that ryobi killed it with this one. I've had no issues with mine and actually I used to work fo the original "Overhead Door Co." And I can say that without a doubt, ryobi killed it and owns the rights, bragging rights if nothing else! I'll by the ryobi gdo accessories as I can find them. Haven't and won't ever buy chamberlain products just out of spite...like they did with ryobi!! Boooyaaa!!!!

Ya, I definitely hope they produce something similar again at some point.
So my door is similar to yours, and like you said, heavy!
Mines a 12' W x 6' 10" Tall, weights 295 lbs, but technically all that is to be offset to near zero by the springs. So in a sense, the weight of the door is mute, I don't think any opener will open these old doors without springs doing at least 80% of the work?
Maybe the new doors, weighing in around 75 lbs, it is possible for just the opener to do some heavy lifting? Maybe??
But still, that battery backup has to be an incredible rest at ease assurance that the wife can always get in or out. But at the same time, not long before these came out, the "smart grid" improvements made in at least our area have made a drastic difference in our power outages. I know my generator has less hours over the last 10 years than the previous 5.
But those attachments are pretty slick.
    Great video as always!

**update**. Looks like the app is back up. But I’ll keep using the MyQ.
I’ve been a huge Ryobi fan for years and up until recently really liked my GDO.
A big reason I purchased the GDO was it’s add on features such as the fan and the power reel and it’s remote smart phone remote functions.
However now it appears that Ryobi has abandoned their customers and terminated the GDO smart phone app/server which eliminates the remote functions.
To me Customer service is everything so once a manufacture fails in that area it’s a good sign they are likely going to fail in other areas.
The GDO is still working well so I won’t be replacing it in the hope that in 2023 when Ryobi can get back into the GDO business they will and start supporting those of us who already had a Ryobi GDO.
I got tired of messing with the Ryobi app and purchased the MyQ remote control.
I can’t control my fan or light remotely but at least I’m able to remotely operate and monitor my GDO.
I won’t say I will never purchase another Ryobi product because I’m pretty heavily invested in the OnePlus system but I’ll certainly consider other manufacturers for future purchases.

Very true. I’ve been in the business for over 4 years, 4-8 jobs a day and I’ve had to replace this motor every time I came across it due to bad terminals and the circuit board malfunctioning. I’m very thorough when diagnosing issues and try everything I possibly can to fix it before replacing. If you have a perfectly working ryobi motor, you’re just very lucky because I’m sure they’ve had recalls. Still a cool ass motor though and I’d for sure buy it if they were as reliable as Liftmaster and Genie and had the wall console hardwired instead of wireless. Otherwise I’d just use it for the accessories but not to open the door.
