    My Uncle was an Engineer at Chrysler under Lee Iacocca, and he told me that Imperial 81-83 were only assembled by people with twenty-five years or more of assembly experience. He still owns his 1981 Mahogany Imperial with a matching interior. It is gorgeous and has been converted back to fuel injection. I don't know what the conversion cost, but I do know the car runs like a million bucks. The dash lights are iridescent and they are beautiful. My Uncle put on Vogue Wide Patterned Whitewalls with a Gold Band with Real Wire Wheels. Love the car!

    From what I understand the upside down key had to do with the pins during the winter season. Apparently Chrysler thought having the pins up instead of down in the ignition would prevent them from freezing.

    This is one rare jewel of a motor car. That lean burn system was a weak point for Imperial's of this year. I loved them when they first came out back in the day. Sad I not in the market to buy😢. Why some always remark about the size and weight of these beautiful cars beats me. Have of any of them driven beside a truck or SUV on the highway? Talk about an oil tanker on wheels!

    Actually, the Imperial is one of my dream cars. I'd get something like you have and turn it into a Restomod. Replace 318 with a 392 Hemi and a 6-speed auto. I'd upgrade the whole suspension with coilovers, anti-sway bars, polyurethane bushings and then I'd put in a dual exhaust. This is all so I can tow my 25' Airstream!!
    However bad the '80's cars might have performed, many were great looking cars!

    I had a 1987 Chrysler New Yorker Fifth Avenue, same color combination. The interior wasn't leather, though, it was thick, blue tufted velour, and just like a 70's-early 80's era Buick Electra or a Cadillac, that driver's seat was more soft and comfortable than my La-Z-Boy recliner! Loved that car.

    Also you can fix that bend in the dash pad above the radio by taking off the bezel & getting about 4 tiny short little pointy black screws. Take your hand and pull pad down firmly then carefully drive in screws through the underside dash pad lip. The underneath dashboard structure is black plastic so they’ll tap right in. Careful not to over tighten, just gently seat the screws .

    Cool car. To think that Chrysler designed and built this at a time when they were barely clinging to life is pretty amazing. Fun fact, the NASCAR Imperial, driven by Buddy Arrington was the last Chrysler product to start a cup series race in 1985. It wouldn't be until 2001 that they would make a comeback

    just an fyi. the security code that is pasted to the cosmetic mirror in the sunshade is used on the older garage door opener head unit in the garage. you were able to slide each number on the head unit to create a running code for that opener. so if one has an old enough opener he can use those numbers to open the garage door.

    A unique time capsule of a car. It sort of serves as a timestamp of the the reason why the U.S. domestic automakers lost a ton of market share to the Japanese automakers. Their quality and technological sins really came to haunt them and gave mainly Toyota and Honda a firm position in the U.S.

  • @ppxhbqt
    @ppxhbqt 3 месяца назад

    FYI: spring loaded grilles were to protect pedestrians, not grilles. Also, the keys were only upside down compared to GM and AMC cars. The story I heard is they did that because they go in like most house keys.
    But it's nice to hear someone who knows the difference between a wheel cover and a hubcap. Not that the meanings are not right in the word.

    • @jaydee4009
      @jaydee4009 2 месяца назад +1

      I disagree about your answer concerning the spring-loaded grilles. I think they were put in because of the federal law that required cars to be able to sustain a 5 m.p.h. "crash" (in the front) without damaging any safety-related components. Creating bumpers that could "give" in such situations, along with grilles that could swing in and wouldn't be damaged, helped cars meet the new requirements and saved drivers money.

    • @ppxhbqt
      @ppxhbqt 2 месяца назад

      I apologize. You are correct about the reason, but the standard in effect at the time this car was designed allowed only a 3/8 inch dent and a 3/4 inch displacement from the original position. The standard you are referring to went into effect for MY 1983, but few cars were immediately changed, especially slow sellers like the Imperial. It was mainly done at the time of a refresh or redesign.

    I test drove one of these when they were new. I felt it looked a bit cheap on the inside with all of the plastic buttons etc. I was still interested in buying one until the sales guy said, "If you drive this, people will know you have money". That was a huge turn off to me and I did not buy the car. I wasn't looking for that kind of attention. If I recall correctly, the car was a huge flop and discontinued soon after its introduction. That was the end of the Imperial line.

    Nice car. Reminiscent of my '77 Cordoba. Isn't this car from the era where, instead of bells and buzzers and chimes, the car would talk to you? So, when you open the door, instead of just the digital dash lighting up, why isn't it saying "The door ... is ajar"? I always wondered how can a door be a jar? A door is a door, and a jar is a jar.
    Also, I disagree with you about Imperial being a separate brand in 1983. Maybe in the 1960s, but in 1983, if you wanted an Imperial, you bought it at a Chrysler dealer.

    • @ppxhbqt
