As an old man now, let me tell you why this car is so representative of the time and place it was built. By the early 1960s, my parent's generation had finally been able to make a decent living--after suffering through the Depression, having lost so many of their generation in WW2, they were wanting cars like this one, and others--that exuded the feeling of most Americans that we were the now the dominant nation. Culturally, we were ready to indulge in better housing, education, and of course, making some of the most powerful, comfortable, road-worthy cars ever seen!..There is a line from an old ZZ TOP tune ("Nationwide"), where the singer shouts out..."Let's drive that old Chrysler down to Mexico! Yeah!" This was just the type of ostentatious vehicle he was singing about. This was an age, just before the American people lost a popular president, witnessed a questionable war, and began to lose faith in our government...we see where we are now. Cars now are much better in many ways, but such things as style, and class, have fallen by the wayside.
When I was in high school my dad bought a brand new 300 G. It blew the doors off of everything on the road! People had a hard time wrapping their head around the two 4 barrels mounted on the fenders!
Heard that pre-ignition when flooring it before Nick backed up the timing. The 1-2 tire chirp is super impressive at the speed it's doing!
I love it. This is no trailer queen, this is a driver! Nick is the best.
That car is pretty cool! Glad you showed it to us fans! It's such a privilege to showcase something so unique and rare!
We agree! And we thank our customers for brining in these spectacular cars.
This one of the last of Virgil Exners styling. Still a very clean and tidy style.
@@NicksGarage That car is very freaking cool. I want to see it stretch it's legs on some open highway. Good class on shaking down a new build and this thing sounds angry for acceleration.
THIS is how you stretch the legs out on a rebuilt engine. Thumbs up to Nick and crew for another flawless rebuild!
Wished I could have made it to Carlisle, maybe next year. My grandad’s ‘61 Plymouth had the push-button transmission and square steering wheel. I loved showing off the push-button tranny and explaining to his grandson, ‘Can you feel it shift?’ He loved to drive fast, and did so frequently.
Nice memories. Thank you.
The wear on the upholstery, a bit of dirt underneath, a few small dings are what I beleive patina is really all about. A loved car ,driven on the road. And that chirp into top......😃😃
This car has it all.
LOVE it!! My 1964 300K has the optional 405hp solid lifter short-ram 413 and it has the shifter in the console instead of the pushbuttons. Black with white leather interior!!
Sounds awesome.
My coworker offered to sell me his 300K with the 413 for $4,500 back in about 1987... I was a young father living in an apartment with no garage and no extra money. I hope someone saved it as he said it would chirp the tires at highway speed and Nick just proved that! Congrats on your 300K and keeping it alive and well.
@@DrGo-bw2jythanks, awesome, Chrysler,,, my Grandparents loved their 63 NEW Yorker ( not a SALON): baby Blue
That car really packs a wallop! I could tell you enjoyed chirping those tires. 👍
Best video yet !!
I drive the exact car 300J white on red.
I bought the car from the original owner 25 yr ago. It’s a beast !! It is stock with sure grip 3.23 gears. When you can get rubber shifting from 1-2 in a 727 automatic you know it’s torque monster !!
Mine is all original with only 45,000 miles.
Hi Ho Silver, away !! 😂
Right on!
I have one too, white on red with A/C!!
Awesome to hear that big car chirp into second gear like that. Always loved a 727 being pushed by a big block!
Same here!
@@NicksGarage bet you misssed front dish breaks lol i got an old 1964 c10 ill be doing disk breaks basically only thing ill mod on it well the engine 292 inline six with head flow tricks high compression custom cam lots of muffler water [only] injection and offy intake
I love it, it's so rare to even get to see one of those now, especially for someone like me half way across the world.
Back in about 1964 this 1963 300j Car was our get away Car even the same color.....From our Turkey stealing stupid drunk deal.......
This Car is amazing and what a fine rebuild by my friend Nick's at his Garage......Thanks so much Nick & George 👍
Old Shoe 🇺🇸
I heard a tire chirp at the shift. Pretty cool car Nick!
Right on! A sweet sound.
This old girl is very impressive! Well done Nick!
My Dad had a '63 New Yorker. It didn't have the dual quad setup. My Mom had a '66 GTO with a 389 and the engine in the New Yorker dwarfed the 389. Comfort wise it was like driving down the highway in your living room.
Some Edsels had push button auto transmission, but the buttons were in the center of the steering wheel. Some Ramblers also had the same push button system as the Chrysler option (especially the Ambassador models) due to the fact that they used the Chrysler Torque Flight transmissions, re-badged as the Torque Command. My father owned an AMC/Rambler dealership back in the 50's and 60's and I remember seeing and riding in them, as well as driving them around the lot when I was a kid.
That is correct. I had an Edsel a few years ago with the push button in the centre of the steering wheel.
All Chrysler Products equipped with automatic transmissions had "Push Button Drive" from 1956 through 1964.
It’s a great space saver to move to dash. Took them 50 years and it’s back. My 2019 Ram has a transmission dial on dash. Love it.
Chrysler started the push button auto trans in 1956, I had a 1964 plymouth fury with the torqueflite push button auto, it was neat!!
Enjoyed the evening ride in that torque beast! Amazing it gets some rubber on the shift at speed!
That shiny chrome-filled 300J sure is pretty. I like getting distracted by shiny objects like this beauty. That dashboard is to die for, well the whole car is to die for. Who wouldn't want a beautiful torque-monster like this? Great job Nick and I hope Mike and Mary have a lot of fun with their car for years to come.
What a GREAT car! And, what a GREAT job showing it off!👍👍
Glad you liked it!
This is one of my fav cars so far on the show.
Great test drive! The combination of a beautiful car with a picturesque sunset really made for a great drive!
Thanks a lot!
That 300 J's like the ultimate cruising vehicle. That interior looks fun
I said this before Nick, one of these classic Chryslers would make a great home for you and your 528 Hemi.
That pencil drawing, Nicks reaction, priceless..........................
Dad used to have a '64 Chrysler 300 with 413 4-bbl. It was a heavy road cruiser that sat low to the ground, and cornered like a champ. It had 60-series rubber all the way around, and handled great. I hope Mike goes forward to care for his 300J's rust, paint and seat cover issues. She is definitely a keeper that anyone would love to have. Great job, Nick!!! I love hearing her chirp the tires in 2nd.
Very cool!
Hello Nick! This is Ryan! Thank you about the drawing.
Nothing better than a 300J on the 440! It’s like driving a living room!
Hard to beat that!
Viewer from over in England in the United Kingdom, here. I have been following this particular car in your videos. Great to see out in action, it's utterly wonderful!
Thanks for watching!
This is the treat of treats! This car is a time capsule, it's showroom condition! Kudos to all the previous owners who correctly took care of this gem. It would be nearly impossible to restore one of these if it was in rough shape
Loved the test drive. It looked like a perfect evening for some roughhousing.
Another one off Nick's bucket list. Now, if everyone can help Nick find a car for that hemi he has collecting dust.....
Awesome video! Kudos to Mike and Mary for letting you give it the beans to showcase one of the kings of early 1960’s passing power. The style is polarizing, but down low torque is fun. I built a Chevy 496 that was at 500 ft lbs at 3,000 rising just past 600 ft lbs at 5,600 - it would just leap at any speed the accelerator was floored.
Nothing feels as good as all that low end torque of a big block
In the past we had the Sun machine to put the distributor in to set points and check out advance, vacuum and mechanical. The second gear chirp makes me smile.
I like when you were on the highway and floored it.
It down shifted and when it shifted to 3rd you could hear the tires chirp.
I love it .
Nick after your test drive we could yell you did not want to park the car.
I am surprised you did not stop at the fuel station.
Did anyone else notice at 20:33 the high end EV in the 1st lane as he passed. Quite a cool shot of such a juxtaposition. Rad.
Chirping the tyres is so cool Nick for a huge car. Hopefully many more miles per smile for the 300J and Mike. Cameras work great George 👍
Brings back memories of my dad’s 57 Saratoga
Sounds like good memories.
@@NicksGarage I used to pretend it was the bat mobile. He sold it before I got to drive it. Sucks
Been looking forward to this one for sure. Great work as always George. The old girl chirping her tires is fabulous. Kudos to Mike for his willingness to keep this beautiful car on the road. Loved his ‘66 Belvedere too. Enjoy them. Have a great week Nick and crew.
I love how it's always chirping the tires every time it shifts!
Dana "60" Glass. Loved seeing this jewel tearing up the freeway, especially the tire chirping on the upshifts. Hope Mike enjoys the torque.
Love that Chrysler it's really a beautiful car.
You get some nice ones in your garage.
I'm hoping to bring you one more before it gets cold. And It was my son's pleasure to draw something for you.
Thank you again.
P.s. Ryan's 19. 😂
It's Cool.
I have your drawing up in the front of the shop underneath the clock. Thank you again Ryan.
Hello Nick it's Ryan your very welcome
Ryan is sure talented and did an excellent job on that image of Nick, his car, and garage. I always admire the talent of artists... what a talented gift to be able to draw like that! You can tell Nick really loved that personal touch on that gift.
Very considerate that one of your viewers sent you those headsets to protect all of your hearing and also improve your ability to communicate while you are doing serious dyno work. I will also say thanks to him for such a great and thoughtful (and useful) gift. As always George, your work is outstanding! I feel like a kid who is actually along for the ride in your videos (as I rode in many of these cars growing up)... I had a family of 3 generations of buying Mopars from the 40's up, and I got to ride in many of these cars from early 60s through early 80s... over 30 Mopars in the family that I rode in most of them with dad's, brother, cousins, uncles and grandparents... it was great, but disappointing the muscle was gone by the time I could buy a car and drive (except I got to drive the 440 wagon and it had nice torque!). Nick, I see your passion on your videos and I could see and feel your passion even more when I met you at Carlisle. Your passion is at a level of 100 octane low lead aviation fuel minimum!... maybe it is Nytro level!?! p.s. I wanted you to have enough trats to survive the Carlisle show and also for the ride home!
We did and thank you again.
Thanks for making the time for your fans Nick, we’re lucky to have you!
Sooo Cooool! The car is amazingly beautiful, the motor is everything I heard my buddies talk about in the mid 70’s, torque, torque and torque. This build surpassed all my expectations. Made a believer out of me. 😃👍
Right on.
What a sound on the dyno! A Time in history that will never return. I watched the Electric Dragsters on RUclips and the only sound was the builder Yelling "Yeah!" as it passed the finish line...silence.....NO EXCITMENT WATCHING AT ALL!
Electric dragster is like a concert with no sound just notes on a giant screen with the lyrics typed out
Nick without a doubt your self and the rest of the guys are The Best. Thank your so much for sharing your great knowledge & wisdom with all of us muscle car junkies. Stay safe and well and keep Rocking Nick. Signed John ( Dr. Olds ) Gregory from Munster Indiana, U.S.A.
We appreciate that!
Hi Nick and George, just got the internet back, probably heat related, 105F yesterday. I have been waiting to see the road test of the 300J. Seeing Nick driving Mike's car brought back a lot of memories from 1964, when my friends father bought a brand new 64 300K Silver edition. It had the 413 long/short ram, with a 4-speed. I had some great times riding in that car, and it was very quick for what it was. I loved the camera angles during the road test, you nailed it George. I was impressed with tire chirp when the transmission shifted, and hearing Nick's He He He chuckle when he was slowing down. The 300J is such a cool car. You never know what will show up at Nick's Garage, the best automotive channel on RUclips.
Always a pleasure. And yes, Who knows what's comes next through my doors.
The 413 is an awesome engine. Have one in my '65 Imperial. Great Highway cruisers!
Sweet, Customer is going to be excited.!!
Hope so!
Love all your videos Nick! Your fans from British Columbia!✊🇨🇦
Thanks so much.
Such an imcredible piece of history. Great job as always Nick
Glad you enjoyed it.
Those are short rams. The overall length of the Rams is 30 inches but the long/short designation refers to the length of the individual runners, not the total length of the manifold. "Long rams" have individual runners for the entire length while "short rams" are divided for one half (15 inches) the length. It is obvious when you consider the outward appearance of the the manifolds. The divided section can be easily seen in the castings.
GREAT car ! My uncle was a Mopar guy, he had a `63 Dodge Polara with this same 413 cross-ram engine. It was a few hundred pounds lighter than the Chrysler 300, and was seriously fast. He was a conservative guy, but his favorite thing was to go hunting for Fuelie Chevys and rip them a new A-hole....
Thank you Nick of reminding me of the old day's when I first started learning how to work on cars the person that taught me was a mopar man and so am I!
Thanks Nick and George for this video. Keep on producing great rebuilds and excellent content.
Thanks, will do!
If people keep sending coffee to Nick at some day he may start his own shop. Nick's Coffee Corner. 🙂
Hello guys!!! Nick really enjoys letting these classic cars stretch their legs and strut their stuff!!! That 300J will be a great cruiser. Fantastic content as always: great week to you guys!!!
You too, sir. Have a great week.
She's an unrestored beauty! Just how I like them. I would only repair the driver's seat and do whatever maintenance it needs and call it good.
Mopar's started to push button transmission in 1955
A really interesting bit of technology.
@@NicksGarage It sure is Nick.
Chirping the gear on the freeway is too cool 😎
Hi Nick! I'm Allan Pacente's wife. He watches you on a regular basis. I LOVE the sound of the engine!
Hello there! Thanks.
I bet mike can’t wait to get his baby back! What a unique car, I had never even heard of it until you got this one in the shop.
Living in Germany let me tell you it's very enjoyable riding on torque down the Autobahn. It's fun when you can go from 120kph to 170 legally and there are still cars closing in from behind.
You are so lucky that you can use the torque and HP legaly I would love tone able to see what my car can do without losing my driver permit
Here's hoping he gets the interior and bottom rot taken care of sooner than later before the car gets out of hand. Such a cool car deserves a full resto!
I love the way that 300 is barking the tires with it already going down the road . Heck it barked them on the interstate!!!!! That's better then some of the muscle cars ..Big Wave and Smile to all ..
All the best, Sarge!
@@NicksGarage All the best to you ,Nick ,and Krew !!!
That 300J is a real sweet looking ride with heap of choice bright work not to mention that low down torque Nick you looked like you were in your element taking it out for a test run which went as it should. Those head sets will be a great addition to the dyno room also Nick and I'm sure you and George will figure them out in no time too.
Thanks 👍. Our viewers are the best!
A beautiful night, a 426W with a Cross Ram Induction system in a nice 1963 300J car. What more could you ask for? Nice cruise, nice power and great Mail Time. I wish I could share a shot of that Ouzo with you Nick! Great editing George!
Beautiful car, beautiful camera work! Enjoyed the ride! Thanks guys!
Our pleasure!
This is a huge improvement from the initial test drive!
Somebody did a nice job on that transmission, cool car, love the interior.
Ride like a magic carpet on the road, with power to spare.
Actually, Ramblers also had push button transmissions back then. I miss my 66 Charger! Never should have sold that car. Your videos make me remember those good times! Thank you from Texas.
Right on.
That is correct. And so did some Edsels.
If I recall, the 300F was the first piece of American Pig Iron to break 0 to 60 in under 6 seconds.
Back in the 90s, drove a push button before, a '64 Imperial Crown sedan with a regular 413...huge car but very quick, thirsty, but it ran very smooth and was very comfy to ride in. Quality car for sure.
Hot DAY-YUM! That baby could wear out some back tires toot sweet!
when I was like 13 there was an older 300 I think a 59 for sale down the street from my childhood home and I was so obsessed with it. I had seen them on horsepower tv earlier in the week and I thought it was crazy that a car that old and cool just popped up for sale just a few blocks down the street a few days later.
Thanks for sharing the memory.
She may not be the prettiest girl at the party, but she's classy & sassy! That 2nd gear tire scratch is way cool.
Wow! I love the big old Chryslers, and this 63 Letter Car is amazing. The test drive was a blast and that tuned 413 sounds fantastic. A true muscle car before the muscle car era, I have a 413 from a 65 Imperial, so they are very close to my heart. Thank you Nick.
Said it before, if i won the lottery it wouldn't be hemi chargers in my garage, it would be every model year of 300's sitting on my property
Nice choice!
Maybe Nick should find a nice 1970 Hurst Chrysler 300 that no longer has a matching motor (or a worn out motor) and put the 528 Hemi in that. Sure would fit the "big motor" theme of the 300's and would really motivate that big C-Body Chrysler (of course a 70 or 71 white Cuda with Red interior would love the 528 Hemi as well). I am a big man, so I am with you loving the 300 line.
Damn good job seems like the more you ran it hard the better it ran
It loved the road.
That big heavy car chirping the tires into second is very impressive . What a beast !!
Nice old car that. I had a 64 Valiant with a 170 slant 6 push button auto. It used to chirp the tires too shifting into second. Keep up the great videos
Dr. nick, that 300J is awesome!!, @ 17:12 the right rear wheel at the chirp did a split second smoke up, it looked like fun going on the 440 @ sunset, Mike and Mary will be very happy, hey George, who was playing the blues on this video?, cheers
We had a 1964 chrysler newport with a 383 that thing drove forever. That had power even after we sold it with 7 cylinders running it ran.
Nick it was great to meet you at the Carlisle mopar show. I caught you at your trail on Sunday. I just love that 63 J. I have a 64 Windsor with a stroker 500 in it.
You’re welcome Niko!!
Thats an awsome car Nick . love the gear scratches on the innerstate 👍 and the slight laugh 😁. Good to see you are still doing well and the crew as well 🙏
Nick, you are cherished the world over, I’m sure, and for those that haven’t figured it out yet, this guy should be crowned the godfather of old school V8 engines. I’m only 52 and I grew up on points and carbs, so I feel Ike a kindred spirit with Nick. I just love when they are dyno tuning an engine and he quickly and instinctively knows how to get what is needed to optimize an engine for its intended purpose. Awesome. I feel like I get the same chills and excitement he gets at those moments. Awesome. Awesome. Awesome. Maximum respect from Charleston, SC. One day I hope to step foot in your garage in the great white north. Cheers
My neighbor had a 300J with the 413, thought the 413 was a 4.25 bore. Another Neighbor had had a 58 Edsel with a 361 PI. The Edsel was much lighter than the 300, but the Edsel would beat it, but those 2x4 s sounded so good. The 361 PI was a solid cam in it and a 4150 Holley it was said to be a 750. That thing would rev to the moon. The tachometer would wind to 6200 rpm s and that’s why it beat the 300. They both had this charisma. That was gone a few years later.
It is no exaggeration to say I am completely in love with this car! What a Beauty!!
A refined monster absolutely incredible to drive nothing modern can give you the feeling these did, Superb Channel.
I have been waiting for this video ever since the day that Mike drove his car into your shop!!!
George-YOU did it again!!!!
That thing hauls ass! Nice chirp on shifts out of that old Torqueflite! Very cool!
Great job nick it is refreshing to find an auto mechanic who still has the expertise to care for older cars keep rocking
Part of the driving experience!
Love that drive, so smooth and classy.
