      @@pdm2201 torqueflites are the most overrated transmissions. I had two 904s, one in a Dart which used to jump itself out of park all the time, a Wagoneer which I seemed to go through filters and pumps like socks even brand new factory manufactured one failed after only a year. A local vol. fire dept had a '78 Power Wagon, that blew out after only 6k miles from new. We had several '97 Rams at the local DPW, they were always having transmission issues. My parents had a '85 Voyager. That transmission blew after 40k miles. My grandparents had a '57 Savoy from brand new. That car spent more time in reverse than in drive.

    Well, for all of the youngsters checking out this video, this car is a classic example as to why and how the Japanese automakers such as Toyota, Honda, and Nissan were able to establish such a powerful and lasting foothold in the USA. While the Big 3 (especially GM and Chrysler) were producing what amounted to poorly executed and hastily-built vehicles that weren't very reliable, the Japanese automakers were producing reliable, well-engineered vehicles at affordable prices. While the late 1970s and the 1980s were challenging times for all automakers, it pains me to say that the Japanese automakers, for the most part, did a much better job of handling these challenges than Detroit did. Yes, Chrysler did enjoy some successes with the K- cars and the introduction of the minivan, both happening under Lee Iacocca's leadership. And GM did enjoy some successes with coupes such as the Camaro, Monte Carlo SS and the Buick Grand National. Ford probably managed the best of the so-called Big 3 with numerous successful vehicles. But the Japanese automakers made the most of Detroit's ineptitude and proved beyond any doubt that they were here to stay.

    • @pdm2201
      @pdm2201 3 года назад +1

      Yes but could you get the Japanese car in Sinatra blue!? What a joke. This is how they tried to sell cars.

      I have to give some credit to Ford during the malise era. I had several Grand Marquis with EEC-IV microprocessors by Hitachi. Ford had it's shit together out of all of the big three when it came to decision making. My experiences with early Ford EFIs was a positive one.

      "Yes, Chrysler did enjoy some successes with the K- cars" - you're joking, right?!!??! Iacocca saved Chrysler in less than 3 years, with those cars! Sinatra made the Imperial advertises, FOR FREE!!! The big cars have the highest profit, not the small one. Ford was a SHAME during the 80's... C''mon, dude... that's a LOT of BOOKS telling the real history from the 80's, and you are WRONG!

Hopefully AB220 passes, so we don't have to deal with this nonsense anymore. I found an '81 Imperial abandoned in a field near Redding about 15 years ago, dragged it back to the Bay Area and got it running with a carb retrofit. Go easy on the wipers, horn and power windows, as they tend to break. Have fun!

    I had an article yrs ago from 1984 that Chrysler engineers were working with Bosch to fix and update this EFI system, since Chrysler was already working with them for fitting EFI on their FWD cars. I wish I could find it and send it to you. It was quite detailed. Chrysler executives were debating the cancellation of the J and X body cars of the time due to low sales. Lee himself was back and forth on the issue, since it was he that originally pushed for the 81 Imperial. And product personnel were pointing out the high sales of GM G body coupe sales in 83. But belt tightening by corporate bean counters eventually prevailed sadly, and the Imp/Cordoba/Mirada were axed. That's too bad, because the idea of the MAF EFI full feedback system was sound, but a rush to production and lack of fast and reliable enough computer components caused the recalls. And yes, the ELB was last used in 78, then it became the ESC, then the digital ECC/ECU used on V8 rwd cars 81 thru 89. From 82-84, that computer was the fastest updating unit from any domestic car line until Ford finally got their EEC4 system right in 85/86. In 1992, I had the opportunity to buy an 82 FS, but the car was pretty well trashed upon inspection. It had already been converted to the feedback carb and all of the EFI parts were long gone. Nice to hear yours is on the road again!

      Adam Trombino... Also another reason why the Chysler bean counters Killed off the Imperial, Cordoba and Mirada coupes was that Chysler after the fast research and development of the k car platform and models ; the beleaguered car company what's financially strapped for cash big time. If you recall the only RWD cars the Chysler Marketed was the Dodge diplomat, Plymouth Gran Fury and the Chysler 5th Avenue ... All were assembled iat the American Motors Kenosha Wisconsin Assembly plant. Chysler could have continued those J and X car models ( Imperial, Cordoba and marotta but their budget just couldn't support those cars what a shame.

    I love these coupe 1981-83 Imperials .The very best of the Early 80's Retro trundle back trunk designs made at that time ( Compared to the Cadillac Sevelle and Lincoln Continental style rear trunks)
    It's amazing how relatively well-preserved this particular model is after all these years. you almost NEVER see anyone of these on the road these days . And this one being a "Frank Sinatra" addition ( The one with Ole blue eyes 8- track tapes ) is definitely a time capsule featuring the old kroner!!!!. This car ,while not a absolute bonafide classic compared to say a 1957 Imperial Crown Southampton or a 1965 Imperial Crown ,is still worth saving and restoring to it's former Glory . Thier are so few of these left that it's worth the sweat equity to restore it .

      @@charliefunboy5210 There's a reason why they still had a 8-track tape option on these Chysler Imperials .. During that time a lot of the older boomers and older buyers in their 40's to 70's who brought these cars new at the time still had 8-Track tapes in their cars and didn't want to switch to cassettes because they still had all those old 8-Tracks in their music Collectons in their homes and cars . Please don't forget to lubricate driver side wiper linkages on Imperial.
    Having the wiper parallel or vertical to the "A" pillar during precipitations (cycling it's arc), is ideal for vision.

    That EFI system was so troublesome that the dealers replaced the entire intake manifold with a carburetor system. I spent a couple days working on one of these and finally called a Chrysler dealer tech to ask him for some direction. Once he stopped laughing at me he let me know the factory conversion kits were no longer available. This was around '86. shame really as these were really nice cars once running right. That efi system was unlike anything any other company was doing, and it was a very wonky system. What they were thinking is beyond me.

    They made A/C compressors cycle in late 1970's to save on fuel. An engaged A/C compressor requires the engine to work harder and use more fuel. You can tell when the R134a gets low because the compressor will cycle too much. Good luck rehabilitating it.

      GM's in the mid 1970s ran all the time (when A/C was turned on), but had an automatic bypass valve that regulated inside temp settings. Saved on clutch wear, but burned more gas. Since Freon had been banned, its only legal use today is in aircraft fire extinguisher bottles. It got an FAA exemption since it's lighter in weight.

Chrysler got such a bad rap as you probably remember for not "conforming" sooner by downsizing everything faster under the big Govt mandated emission gun of the era. I just HATED watching all that happen too on so many levels. But it was a bummer. And I'll tellya, I owned a 70 Monte Carlo a 72 Grand Prix a 75 Grand Prix a 76 Riviera all were very nice. Then I had a loaded 78 Cordoba for a year and I'll say this, that car was more comfortable, better handling, and even smarter elegant looking, inside and out, than any of my aforementioned GM adversaries! But sadly, at end 70 decade, Chrysler could barely give them away. Anyway. Great find! I owned a 1982 Chrysler Imperial and it was the very worst car I ever owned. It was had to believe it was hand made and the most expensive car they made. I swore off Chrysler for life because of this car. It took Mercedes to bring me back. Absolute garbage and it dropped dead on my on my way to my own wedding. I don't care what you say lady. And as a small proof, just look at the paint falling off your car. The Lean Burn system was junk and the dealers couldn't by law switch them back to carburetors. And if you did, none of your digital dash would work. Totally useless car. In all fairness, I swore off Cadillac as well. Between their 4-6-8- engine starting itself on fire, and the Northstar blowing head gaskets and the 4100 series boat anchors, they were all junk. Mine was dark burgundy and was the most beautiful pile of crap you've ever seen. That blue is ugly as sin and was the worst color for the car. And Sinatra cassette tapes, isn't that great. That car belongs in a junk yard along with all the rest of them.

    I share your enthusiasm for these cars...I have five of them myself (including an 82 Sinatra). I have a variety of other more valuable cars in my collection but I am intrigued by these! Coincidentally my dad and his wife live in Hayward (I'm in Oregon).
