Robbie you're making a huge impact on the sport. You've not only helped me with my game, but for the few events/tournaments/leagues that I've attended, there is always talks about where people learned about x,y, or z part of the game and your channel is one of the first 3 mentioned for how or why people are able to do whatever it is we're cheering them on for. This goes for the beginners (like me) to the semi pros that I've grouped with. Appreciate you man!
Tip 5 is a big one. I think everyone understands it in regards to putters and hand feel, but once it gets up to faster discs, it becomes "the archer not the arrow." Seemingly hand feel falls to the wayside once it stops being a putter. As someone who plays with mostly Innova, I really want to love the Mako3, and the cult-like following of the Mako3 makes me feel like I have to love it and throw it well. Truth is, it's just not as comfortable in my hand as the Jay, and it accomplishes the flight that I would get out of the Mako3, but with more consistency and confidence. Thanks for posting Robbie!
By far lately one of my favorite videos and I did this last weekend at a tourney and didn’t realize this video was right up that alley. Great instructions for better scores and rounds
Thanks for the shout out! 😂Probably a coincidence but I do watch many many videos of yours. Getting back into the sport after a 20yr hiatus. You have really helped me start getting it back and even improving. That’s why the Robbie C birdy patch will always have a home on my main bag ✊🏻
I think we all have a tendency to get Birdie focused and we forget how powerful playing for par (avoiding bogeys) is. It is always exciting to see that Pro tour player with the colorful card with bogeys and birdies, but then you see the other player that just played within his/her game with no bogeys beating most of the field. Great stuff Robbie!
"Play for par" and "Don't be a hero" are the biggest tips I live by. Side request, bring back that sweet calming background music from 2022, even for just 1 video. Great video as always!!
Ive been throwing just putters this year and its a game changer. I dont play enough to get to know lots of discs, throwing one stable disc consistently has probably cut around a shot per hole off my score.
Awesome tips! What would you suggest on the putter only rounds for a forehand dominant player? I definitely struggle forehanding putters, but maybe that’s why I need to do it!
3 is my biggest problem. Looking at a lot of holes I usually try to reach and take bogeys on I've come to the conclusion I could work up the fairway gradually for a par or even still a look for birdie. Trying to reach the basket with every throw kills me. Not because I can't reach but the mistakes get bigger with every foot distance you add to the throw it seems? Nice vid!
Going for par is by far the best advice - especially beginners who are just starting to get better. Brining this into tournament play (MA3) does wonders for your mental game, game plans, and execution.
playing for par works great through MA2. Basically it's playing solid while the rest of the field is screwing up. Often players have distance but little control, little knowledge of shot shapes or course management. Esp if one is limited in distance (though less true in wide open courses)
Playing to par has shaved about 7 strokes off my game for 18 holes. (I’m pretty new to the sport and still throwing 10-15 over at my favorite course.) Unless I’m have a “hit every tree” day. Then it wouldn’t matter anyway! My cold shoulder disc right now is the roadrunner. I threw it so well for about a month. Found the heat, now I burn the roadrunner over for a roller every time I try to use it. I did learn that star plastic is awesome with it though!
Been struggling with the Anubis a little. Sometimes I really nail it, and put it right under the basket. But I have more good shots than bad shots. Sometimes I wish I would have just thrown my trusty Buzzz. I think I just need to take it to the field and get a real feel for it.
great stuff man, I like the play for par... and everytime i get off it trying to do the hero shot I'm doomed. I would love to throw the buzzz, but man I do 2 good shots and 10 bad.
Streamline Ascend. There's no over stable butter for me like the streamline stabilizer. Your harp replacement is my streamline stabilizer. Back to the Ascend, I hoped it might be like my Latitude 64 Maul with just a little variation. But there's nothing more suited to me in fairway drivers than a Maul. I actually drew Darth Maul on both of my maul's in red and black sharpie. But yeah, the streamline ascend is a great disc, just not the missing ingredient.
Hated both proxy and envy at first, love them now. In fact my envy is beat in enough it's flying more like the proxy, too stubborn to replace it with new envy I own. Right now my battle is between a reactor and a warship. I'm going through spells if I'm throwing the crave poorly I throw the river awesome and vice versa. Surely poor mechanics so I'm keeping both till I figure it out. JMO reactor is the replacement for buzz throwers looking for something new.
#4! I am very new to the sport. I mostly play at a beginner 9hole course. 240' is longest hole. My goal is a bogey free round.. Playing 3 or 4 rounds every time. I have a bad hole 6 on 3rd time through. I unravel completely, mentally gone. rest of round and next, hard to recover.
The Hex. I want to love it. I throw it awesome at times but there’s always a 50-50 chance I’m gonna grip lock it bad! The Buzzz seldom fails me, just fits my hand better. The Hex is out of the bag now.
crave and i dont get along, as well as the uplink, wraith and emac truth, im pretty sure its a feel thing with them but i just seem to never get the right line with them. however the hex is my tried and true next to a mystic for under stable mid. and the lonestar curl and mockingbird for fairway and driver i seem to just hammer home
I tried to like the envy as a throwing putter. It's just something about hand feel that I can't get a consistent release with. I pull it out of the box now and then and just put it back after a round or two.
I played a tournament this weekend at a course I have only played once. Went for the par approach and pared 14 holes. This gave me a round rating of 77 above my current PDGA rating.
I like the putter only rounds. If I am playing on my own, I play two rounds - one with my disc of choice and the other putter only. It definitely makes me think different approaches to each hole. I would like to change up your request for what disc doesn't get along with me, to the opposite. I have learned to disc down and rarely throw anything over a 7 speed. The exception is the Insanity. That disc outperforms anything else in my bag on a consistent basis. I know it isn't my arm speed, because I just haven't put together the right form to get that high arm speed. So, I don't know why we get along, we just do. Thanks for the tips, I'm sure they will help shave a few strokes off.
I've watched so many of my friends do magical things with the Roc and Roc3. I tried for over a year to like it and throw it but, it never clicked for me. I went to the Buzzz and eventually the EMac Truth which has been a go to for the last 5 years. Throw what works for you!
I have a cool rule of thumb for better rounds. Whatever your max distance is, divide it by 50 and that's the fastest speed disc you should throw in a round that REALLY matters to you. You'll throw cleaner lines and get in less trouble by finishing closer to the center of the fairway
I love my raider even though I have thrown other discs better. Best tip I believe is play for par. I started playing with this attitude and never had so many birdies. No ace yet but I know it’s coming.
My favourite mold is the Westside Warship. Workable, glidey. But hey, I only throw putters, so.. And one that just doesn't work for me: Kastaplast Grym. Well, it works sometimes. That's the problem.. :-)
I don’t get along with Champion/Z type plastic drivers. Roadrunner, Mamba, Scorch, Heat - they all might as well have been bricks. Yet my favorite disc in my bag is a champion Mako3.
I haven't found a disk that I don't like... just a LOT of discs that either don't do what I want them to do, or that I already do with other discs. I like to throw a disc as many ways as i can to see if it has any neat tricks that it may not have been designed for... My best example... The Tesla (172g Cosmic Neutron? lab blank). Throw it normally.. (I generally throw flat)... it goes long straight then slams the brakes on and fades hard... My only forearm throw for a local through the forest and hard right at the end. BUT... Throw it 10deg off vertical hard & fast, 30 ft out... and it rolls for 200+ ft (I've done 280, and did 230 today in 50mm wet grass) Throw it throttled down vertically for a big semicircle out of jail, round that tree and back in that alcove. Throw it throttled down on Anhyzer from above the shoulder for a great flex through tight trees. Lob it vertically overhead and it lands vertical, and keeps going. Hyzer it into the ground in front of you for a big over-stable skip. The Signal I had, when thrown hard and fast straight ahead... but forearm 20deg over vertical (slightly upside down, a bit like a hatchet) it flies a U shape... unfortunately I donated that to the god of torrential rivers.
Harp and I have complicated relationship. Then found your channel, tried the pig. I have not looked back. I’ve been wondering about adding 1 speed after watching Polecat
This timing is hilarious. I just did field work for the first time, teed up after awhile on hole 1 and threw two discs into the thorns, got them out, and left feeling utterly defeated. Going back soon ish but how do you deal with confidence as a beginner? Trying my best to improve and it's just not clicking. Been playing only a few months. Any input helps positive or negative..
Just finished watching. Feeling a lot better. I can't believe this video came out today on a day i needed it most as a beginner who's friend is consistently 5 to 8 strokes ahead of me. Thanks man!
There are a few discs out there that I WANT to love and just cannot... starting with Destroyers (everyone breathe before getting hackles up). Ironically, the Emperor which is a Destroyer variant, and I get along for some reason. I've also got a Gateway Realm in the bag right now and rather love that. Now for the Zone... it doesn't work for me. Instead, the Doomsday Discs Area 51 took that spot and is outstanding. Now if I ever find a 7/5/0/2 variant that I love ... might be giving the Servo a run (I know the numbers are different but I keep hearing it flies more 0/2 than -1/2). Based on past experience with the volt (which seems to be more firebird than Athena/Exodus/thunderbird), I hope that works.
