Thanks so much for this tutorial. I had watched many videos and they all said to right click on a deleted file and add back. This did not work on my Mac. However your instructions to hit file and then add back worked perfectly. I am a newbie to Mac and I really appreciate straight to the point, quality tutorials. Thanks again!

Brilliant Gary! Cmd-Z has saved my butt innumerable times. But I think the file versioning and its ability to choose an earlier version to restore is “worth the price of admission alone”. Thank you so much!

This tutorial just saved my butt. I was trying to share one file from my iMac to my MacBook Pro, well long story short after deleting my entire desktop which is a mess of folders I was able to retrieve them, thanks to you. 👏🏻

Im having the same issue? -- did you have your page document saved on icloud. Im going insane lol trying to get my page document back. I deleted of the mac trash and its not letting me.

Thanks It was very useful. But I want to ask a question, I have a hardisk that I unplug it when it was working, then I can't open it anymore, I have very important files there. Is there any way to I return them back?
If you delete a file and then empty the bin, the space on the drive becomes available for new files. Therefore if you save a new file after you empty the bin, you might not be able to recover the file you deleted because it has been overwritten.
Actually the style of your videos made me think they're from 10 years ago when I first saw them XD. Anyway, your videos are good.

"Put Back" hasn't worked on my MBP since Big Sur if the item is deleted from my Desk Top. Over 2 1/2 hrs with Apple support in 4 different calls with no fix. Including Safe Mode resets, Turning the machine on and off probably over 20 times 🤬 and reinstalling Monterey 3 times. Really good video though. Usefull being a key feature.

while using photo sweeper I accidentally trashed "duplicates" on my desktop, not the photo app! now I'm trying to use my Time Machine to restore them. it found & restored everything, so I thought, last night. I turned off my Mac & restarted it this morning...all the things I thought were restored were not there! also following instructions for the "put back" button in the trash does not work for me. the put back button won't even show up whether I have selected items or not. my Mac was purchased in 2017, Ventura 13.6.7 so maybe the "put back" button doesn't do what yours does??
Put Back is a convenience. If you see files in the Trash you want, then just drag them out of the trash to someplace else.

What about a text thread on iPhone?
At the top level of the Messages app there should be a Recently Deleted section if you have anything that can be recovered.
In Gmail (possibly chrome) there’s an _undo delete_ option that appears @ the bottom of the screen 4 like 30 secs.
How about a folder with files that are too big for the trash - how can I get those back?
Not sure what you are dealing with there. There's no such thing as "too big for the trash" as if you have the files to begin with then they use space. They don't use more space just because they are in the trash.
@@macmost It was a folder containing files from a previous computer. I was planning to just “untrash” it when it was done, until it came up with a warning message that it couldn’t fit in the trash basket, and then all (everything) was gone with nothing in the trash 😢 All was lost…
Hi Gary I deleted some original iMovie video files a few months ago and I only have the render files on my ssd. can I rebuild the original video files from the render files because the render files are around 500gb? many thanks!@
By "render files" do you mean your exported final video? Or do you mean from iMovie's cache? I would think it would be very difficult to recreate what you had from cached files. Instead, I would just start again with your original clips if you really need to do something new with them.
@@macmost Hey Gary, thanks. I meant the cache render files is there any way I can recreate the original video file from them because I really need the original file. I deleted the original files from the iMovie timeline and iMovie folders in the backups too from my m1 MacBook around 6 months ago. I just thought because the render files are around 500gb there must be some chance of recovery. What do you think? Thanks!

Note doesn't use "documents" like Pages, etc. It just stores info in a database, like Contacts, Calendar, Reminders.
So you can no longer retrieve an old email using Time Machine?
With most email being server-based, old messages probably aren't even on your Mac until you request them from the server.
@@macmost It worked great before without the user having to do anything. If you have more than one apple device you are almost forced to use icloud mail. I don't see a way to request them from mac mail. Should you archive the important emails but then again you don't know they are important until you can't find one. This is a Bad Apple.
@@schadlarry Unless you deleted the email message, you should still have it. If you deleted it, then the email service obeyed your wishes and deleted it. That is the same for iCloud, Gmail, Yahoo, Microsoft, or any email provider. You tell it to delete, it deletes.
@@macmost Yes I get that but before Apple changed how Time Machine works, you could be in Mac Mail, enter Time Machine and go back as far as your latest TM backup and recover pretty much anything. Now you cannot do that with mail or photos. You have to remember how it use to work, so much better.
This question might not be appropriate here but:
I use MS Office for Mac 2019 and macOS Monterey on my 11" MacBook Air (2015). In my Finder/Documents file when sorting by Kind , I'm pretty sure there used to be a section titled Documents in which I found all my Word docx. Things appear to have changed: Now I have Folders, Presentations, Spreadsheets, PDF Documents and Other. My docx files are all in Other (which, I suppose, means they can be mixed up with dross such as screen shots and zip files). If Finder can sort Folders, Presentations, Spreadsheets and PDF Documents, why is is it now putting docx in Other at the bottom of the page? I don't think I'm imagining that there used to be a section entitled Documents - it was nearer the top of the screen. Hope someone can help.
When I try it, my .docx files appear under Documents. Maybe you don't have enough Documents files in that folder for it to form its own category?
@@macmost Thank you for your reply. I have tried loading docx files from other folders but it does not change the location from Other. Sorting Finder/Documents by Applications rather than Kind does include my docs under MS Word which is an improvement.
@@Curlew-Corner Interesting. Definitely does file .docx files under "Documents" for me. There must be some other difference going on.
@@macmost I’ve just had new batteries fitted, although I can’t think that has anything to do with it. I am also aware that my 2015 MBAir might not work in the same way as more recent machines (I don’t think it will do mirroring, for example), but sorting a few files in an appropriate folder is hardly rocket science. Anyway, sorting by Application works at present so the ‘problem’ is sort of solved. Thanks you for your responses which are much appreciated. I came across you on YT quite by chance and find you short videos a great help. I really do love my MacBook and it’s always interesting to learn new things it can do. Best wishes from 🇬🇧
