Che gelida manina
from La Boheme
Franco Corelli as Rodolfo
Mirella Freni as Mimi
Listen to his sensational "speranza" and "vi piaccia dir" at the end :-)
Che gelida manina,
se la lasci riscaldar.
Cercar che giova?
Al buio non si trova.
Ma per fortuna
h una notte di luna,
e qui la luna
l'abbiamo vicina.
Aspetti, signorina,
le dirr con due parole
chi son, e che faccio,
come vivo. Vuole?
Chi son? Sono un poeta.
Che cosa faccio? Scrivo.
E come vivo? Vivo.
In povert` mia lieta
scialo da gran signore
rime ed inni d'amore.
Per sogni e per chimere
e per castelli in aria,
l'anima ho milionaria.
Talor dal mio forziere
ruban tutti i gioelli
due ladri, gli occhi belli.
V'entrar con voi pur ora,
ed i miei sogni usati
e i bei sogni miei,
tosto si dileguar!
Ma il furto non m'accora,
poichh, poichh v'ha preso stanza
la speranza!
Or che mi conoscete,
parlate voi, deh! Parlate. Chi siete?
Vi piaccia dir!
How cold your little hand is,
let me warm it for you.
What's the use of looking?
We won't find it in the dark.
But luckily
it's a moonlit night,
and the moon
is near us here.
Wait, mademoiselle,
I will tell you in two words
who I am, what I do,
and how I live. May I?
Who am I? I am a poet.
What do I do? I write.
And how do I live? I live.
In my carefree poverty
I squander rhymes
and love songs like a lord.
When it comes to dreams and visions
and castles in the air,
I've the soul of a millionaire.
From time to time two thieves
steal all the jewels
out of my safe, two pretty eyes.
They came in with you just now,
and my customary dreams
my lovely dreams,
melted at once into thin air!
But the theft doesn't anger me,
for their place has been
taken by hope!
Now that you know all about me,
Speak, tell me who you are.
Please do!

Unico. Il più grande per me.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Praise to Corelli of course. But also praise to Puccini. This piece is sooooo beautiful!
People today are used to tenorino's singing this.
By far Franco Corelli was the best tenor that ever was and remarkably he was largely self taught.
Corelli's voice was full and rich, from the baritone range all the way up to the highest notes. He had to be the Met's most consistently fine tenor ever.
Saludos cordiales
Beautiful XXX
Here I am in 2021, watching again my favorite Rodolfo ❤️
Franco Corelli was undoubtedly a tenor in full.
Bellissimo !!!
How lovely Freni is listening to Corelli in character.
An overwhelming voice, indeed. Perhaps the greatest of the late 20th century.
His sheer volume in the opera house was astonishing. But it was volume with great beauty and lyricism.
Did you listen to him live?
@@francesmunzen5897 Yes, twice, in Gioconda and Romeo et Juliette. Fantastic, almost unbelievable.

LurayFarmer You are so lucky!! I'm jealous!!
Corelli's take on this aria is particularly heartfelt and touching, even when past his prime...beauty on toast!
Franco is as usual overwhelmingly gorgeous.
Handsome man!
Il grande maestro Franco Corelli, unico, magnifico e eccellente.
Anche lei la Freni!!@
IDEM!
Perfect
The greatest!!!! Period.
Outstanding singer . One of the best
Superb!!!!
Best live Corelli I've seen. And with Freni, my favorite spinto--just WOW, nothing better.
One the best recordings out there
Bravo to the conductor who followed him through so many extreme rubati
I FEEL KINDA STUPID. I HAVE ENJOYED THE CORELLI SOUND FROM THE FIRST TIME I HEARD THE VOICE IN THE 1960'S, BUT I NOW REALIZE HOW INTELLIGENT AN ARTIST HE WAS ! I AM DOUBLY AMAZED !
Damn ! What a voice !
Than you😊
Incredible....Thanks for posting X
CHE VOCE MERAVIGLIOSA!
Besides his unique talent as singer, I think Corelli was the best actor of all the tenors I've ever seen. I love to watch this performace, it's incomparable. Superb!
Well, Coreli is a great tenor but in acting - no, he is not a fine actor, besides he was very nervous on stage, which too played its role.
Placido Domingo is the best actor on stage - that's definitely. Look at one of his rendition of this aria in - if I'm not mistaken - 1976 on RUclips.
Cierto. Saludos cordiales.
@@napoleonisthegreatest.2448 That I must agree with. Corelli is the best tenor ever (in my view), but his occasional lisp and not-so-great acting were distracting. On the other hand, Domingo has none of his vocal faculties, but boy, can he act.
@@PragueImport Corelli was a pretty good actor despite the stage fright.
Incredible.......❤❤❤
Maraviglioso!!!!!!!!!, che grande che fu Franco Corelli..."the complete package" as my uncle said!!!!, BRAVOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!

Corelli is the best of the best tenor in the world
Mastery beyond belief.
Thanks for sharing this extraordinary footage!!! Franco Corelli is my best tenor ever!!!, his vocal technique is simply wonderful!!!!. He was a true talented tenor that gave us his art, with the simplicity of a "forever young" person, and the quality of the greatest singer!!!! BRAVOOOOOO!!!!!!
John Schofield Corelli,Kraus,Gigli,Caruso, del monaco, stefano.. Volpi.. Pavarotti.. Domingo.. Cada uno tiene su belleza

Franco's voice will always be the reference for the complete tenor.

Yes your words mean everything
I am completely agree, this the best performance I've ever seen!
@@dongsagastume1263 No, his voice was ailing by this time. You can hear it. Something is not quite right. The motor is not running smoothly. He has a fantastic voice. But here, his voice was already in decline.
@@mickey1849 I feel you're right. To know how much liquidity and tenderness Corelli could really bring to this, listen to this haunting reading from 1965 --

Grazie Mille Cara Kievest!!!
assolutamente nr1!
I am sure that It would be absolutely mesmerizing even if he sings multiplication table on any cheesy melody.
@italopera I agree with you . I have been listening to Franco since 1961 and feel he is in the top 5 of greatest tenors . This aria is more for a lyrical tenor . Franco is a spinto heroic in my opinion . Would look forward to a reply from you , even though it is a year later. I just saw your comment today . Franco is my all time favorite opera singer period !!!!!
A curious habit you see in late Corelli, is that he wipes his head when nervous. You see it a lot in his late recitals. Watch 30 seconds before the high C in this aria and you will see him wipe his face. Poor guy was so wracked with nerves.
That’s no C. Even in his prime, he lowered the aria in performance. No shame in that, to be sure. (He always lowered the ‘Pira’ too.) You are surely right about his extreme nervousness. The gesture you mention, by the way, was not so much wiping his face as pinching his nose, which he did throughout his entire career. Can’t imagine what help vocally it was.
Thank you for posting unforgettable performance of the great master. Please upload "Si mi chiamano Mimi" with beautiful Mirella !!!
....vi piaccia dir....assoluto!!!
Best tenor ever....
CALLAS l'UNICA SOPRANO ASSOLUTA ASSOLUTTAAAAAAA nessuna nessuna nessuna come LEI!!!!!!!!!
*This Heroic and Romantic Rodolfo* whom many do not accept to be very used to hearing and seeing but, this character in lighter voices, the persons do not forget that it is
composed by Grand Maestro G. Puccini, who Not specialized in short and lights voices flow!!!
bene
There was no other made of Andre Chenier what he did. No other sang the part so well.
An even more sad tale in that the character was based on a real man, a poet caught between the peasants and the aristocracy, who was beheaded at the guillotine. Sadly, there was no real Madeleine who loved him so unto death.
You are welcome. Mirella with "Si, mi chiamano Mimi" is coming sunday :-)
4:00, ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
The greatest (unrecognised) tenor of the 20th. C. Not enough people have really listened to this genius. Beats Pavo. and Caruso,
Victor Cowen no artiste beats another, but yes he's up there with the best.
Victor Cohen, you are absolutely right!
Como èl ninguno
Some Tenors break glasses......Corelli destroyed buildings!!!!!
Where in the world did you get this recording? Vcrs didn't come out until the 80s. I remember. How on earth did you record this?
wmnoffaith1 However he did it, I am glad he did. Maybe it was televised in the 80's and recorded, or maybe transposed to video from film.
Does anyone know where we can see the rest of this performance?! Masterful!
I know this is a late reply but in case you haven't found out yet, unfortunately this clip is not part of a full opera performance of La Boheme.
It's a Gala Concert given in Hamburg in 1971, in honor of Franco Corelli.
Fortunately you can see the full concert here, including many beloved arias and duets: ruclips.net/video/yaSyS-751EQ/видео.html
Enjoy!
