  • He was a lovely Rodolfo. How could Mimi resist?
    (Puccini: La Bohème) Metropolitan Opera, January 11, 1966.

    I was there and saw this wonderful performance. I was in NY for two weeks and got to hear Corelli in Aida, Tebaldi and Konya in Tosca, A Butterfly that was OK. And while wandering about at an intermission, I saw Tebaldi & Corelli were doing Boheme on Jan 11. I bought a ticket. It was absolutely wonderful. That is one of the great things that the Met used to be: a house where you could hear lots of singers doing the same role in a season. For example, in that season you could have heard as Mimi: Freni, Albanese, Tucci, Tebaldi, Stratas, Amara, and on tour you could have heard some of them as well as Kirsten. The Met was truly a singer's house and singing was supreme. I did not realize what a privilege I had in attending opera with those options.

      Thank you. Weren't they great! Got to see them twice in Gioconda. Once in Tosca -- on tour. And the Boheme. Hosted Tebaldi when she sang a recital in my home town. Saw Corelli in Forza, Werther, Turandot, AND in Ernani one night when he stepped in for Domingo!!! Also got to see Price in Cosi one night she SHE stepped in for Amara. Those were golden opera days. And we talked then about the Golden Age being in the Caruso era and the 1920's.

    Maybe not - Corelli was such a professional, perfectionist performer that even if he had lost something in later years he would have given a good performance. When he felt himself waning, he retired (unlike so many who keep going on and on and on). We should treasure any recording he has ever made imo.

    • @judithbereczky4114
      @judithbereczky4114 4 года назад +9

      Yes, like Domingo. He will never retire. He can' sing anymore, so he "became" a baritone, which doesn't suit him and is so boring. He is selfish, taking the spots from young tenors. Franco Corelli had a class and retired, but Domingo is very selfish and narcissistic.

    Corelli had more lung capacity than any other human being, abdominal muscles of tungsten, vocal cords of some unknown substance that could produce any required note with appropriate power and musical beauty, a true sense of the dramatic demands of every aria I have heard him sing with the skill and talent required to respect those demands, and exquisite control of the full set of his abilities. He must also have had a massive taste for hard work; no human endeavour of the quality he achieved comes easily.

    Corelli is my all-time favorite Operatic Tenor. No one else could/can milk a melodic line and phrase the way he did. Moreover, he sang with a barely controlled passion which was palpable. His voice conveyed great tragedy in a way I have never heard from any other Tenor. His tendency to engage in scooping and sliding (sometimes almost excessively) did not bother me given the superb quality of his voice. The "ring" that he had from roughly G through Bb was tremendous. Pavarotti had that kind of "ring" on B and high C but not on G through A. Corelli sounded very much like a baritone below G which Pavarotti did not (more of a lyrico-spinto). Thank you so much for posting this.

      @Jacob-ry3lu 8 лет назад +26

      He had a solid stream of sound from his lowest register to his top, no weak spots. And I agree, Corelli's phrasing just melts the soul, everything he sings becomes the gold standard.

    • @aforwood1
      @aforwood1 8 лет назад +16

      Big difference in their voices. Corelli is a Spinto and Pavarotti is a Lyric.

    • @mr.m.8727
      @mr.m.8727 8 лет назад +9

      aforwood1 True that :)
      But, the comparison (clearly lost by Pavarotti)
      is due.
      Since Pavarotti decided to "sing" Aida, Trovatore, Turandot, etc...he entered Corelli's field I am afraid.
      I really appreciated the early Pavarotti singing in Rigoletto and Fille du Reg. Sadly he chose the path of money...and ruined his own great voice.

      I odn't know that they "all" transpose it down-annwhat is eventually., but I don't think of it as a spinto role, necessarily, but if you do then the spintos would transpose it down, eventually, or early on

    he was truly the greatest tenor. Unfortunately, he retired before the world could see him like
    the three tenors on TV who were not in his class. By far he was the greatest Calaf.

      McMahon Maria indeed. Pavarotti said that if Corelli's performances were broadcast as the three tenors, he would be as famous as he deserved.

    This was Corelli at his peak, and what a peak it was! To see him with Tebaldi in this performance would have been a supreme thrill. Both of them were smart: when their voices began to age they retired, and we can always think of them at their best. I wonder how Puccini would have felt if he had had the opportunity to hear his work performed so magnificently.

    Thank you for spoiling us by sharing "nothing but the best." This is OUTSTANDING - from a time when Corelli really "had it" vocally as Rodolfo. Any clips with Corelli from his 1974 Met broadcast of LA BOHEME and any of his traversal of this opera in Torre del Lago in 1976 should be forever BANISHED from any and all file-sharing services known to man, woman, and child. THIS is how Corelli should be remembered - and with Tebaldi as Mimi, too!

    После Франко Корелли , слушать кого либо очень сложно.Его голос занимает все пространство , охватывает сознание и затем не отпускает.

      И да, и нет. Хотя сказано хорошо. С одной стороны, Корелли вообще сложно с кем-то сравнивать - он один такой. А с другой стороны, именно Корелли "виноват" в моем увлечении итальянской оперой, я наконец-то по-настоящему открыла ее для себя. Слушаю сейчас разных певцов - в основном старой школы.

    Where have the Italian tenors and sopranos gone, most of the present day singers seem to be from Eastern Europe.

    Franco Corelli and Renata Tebaldi, what could be better? - Corelli playing Pinkerton to Tebaldi's Butterfly, which Corelli unfortunately never performed. If he had played Pinkerton, the sight of that devastatingly handsome man would have caused pandemonium in the opera house. Thank you for posting this treasure, Roberta.
