Franco sure could push those high notes out with no problems at all amazing
That high C was heroic
I was there and saw this wonderful performance. I was in NY for two weeks and got to hear Corelli in Aida, Tebaldi and Konya in Tosca, A Butterfly that was OK. And while wandering about at an intermission, I saw Tebaldi & Corelli were doing Boheme on Jan 11. I bought a ticket. It was absolutely wonderful. That is one of the great things that the Met used to be: a house where you could hear lots of singers doing the same role in a season. For example, in that season you could have heard as Mimi: Freni, Albanese, Tucci, Tebaldi, Stratas, Amara, and on tour you could have heard some of them as well as Kirsten. The Met was truly a singer's house and singing was supreme. I did not realize what a privilege I had in attending opera with those options.
You were one of the fortunate few beings that have walked the face of the earth and were privileged to hear the great Franco Corelli. Alas I was born in 72....
Thank you. Weren't they great! Got to see them twice in Gioconda. Once in Tosca -- on tour. And the Boheme. Hosted Tebaldi when she sang a recital in my home town. Saw Corelli in Forza, Werther, Turandot, AND in Ernani one night when he stepped in for Domingo!!! Also got to see Price in Cosi one night she SHE stepped in for Amara. Those were golden opera days. And we talked then about the Golden Age being in the Caruso era and the 1920's.
Dick Wilson the other
I
***** Juan Diego Florez is one of the best! " Try him" ;-)
Dick Wilson I'm so envious...Glory days for sure.
TEBALDI=VELVET
CORELLI=GOLD
BOTH=STRONG, LOUD, CLEAR AND VERY VERY PASSIONATE.
GRAZIE DIO PER LORO DUE! ❤🙏
No matter with whom you compare him, Corelli will always win on points. Because he was so much more than a voice
Well Said
This must be Corelli's BEST Rodolfo. Perhaps inspired by the gorgeous Tebaldi. A God and a Goddess.
I had the incredible joy of seeing him as Rodolfo--magnificent--passionate--Corelli!
You were fortunate! I discovered him only seven years ago.
He feels every word.... that’s what made him so special
What is astonishing is that this would actually happen live! In the moment. Those were the days of real opera and true opera singing! Can't get myself to a theater to hear opera these days.
@@bluebird5361 sometimes more... you feel for the bad singer.... well sometimes.
@@bluebird5361 i haven't found the balance yet... bad singing is so prevalent.... all over....
Maybe not - Corelli was such a professional, perfectionist performer that even if he had lost something in later years he would have given a good performance. When he felt himself waning, he retired (unlike so many who keep going on and on and on). We should treasure any recording he has ever made imo.
Yes, like Domingo. He will never retire. He can' sing anymore, so he "became" a baritone, which doesn't suit him and is so boring. He is selfish, taking the spots from young tenors. Franco Corelli had a class and retired, but Domingo is very selfish and narcissistic.
I give my salutes to Maestro Corelli 😭😭
I thought Beverly Sills retired too early . . . she still had a lot to give.
@@derrickharmon2She had it in her head that Devereux aged her voice, had other aspirations and a needy family to put it gently.
Not many singers have everything: A HUGE voice, amazing stage perona (in spite of his pathological stage fright) and well... so gorgeous!!! Bravo, Corelli!!
Sempre tanta emozione nell'ascoltare l'indimenticabile Corelli ...bravo e anche bello
A voice so big and wide yet so angelic and gentle
An instrument of God, indeed.
This is heavenly! Those two together makes one forget all technicalities. The enjoyment drowns out all worldly things involved with voice production and negates the questions about Bflats or high C's. These people knew how to sing!
I personally prefer the lower key. It allows for broader phrasing and a slightly less worried tenor. The aria is still plenty high, and that the biggest single note in the role. A great B is much preferred to a blown, cracked, or splattered C.
In lower key I guess but his high note still in C5
@@sairechrysbelleparcon8950 than is not the lower key! I didn't check it, but it seems easy for him.
Corelli had more lung capacity than any other human being, abdominal muscles of tungsten, vocal cords of some unknown substance that could produce any required note with appropriate power and musical beauty, a true sense of the dramatic demands of every aria I have heard him sing with the skill and talent required to respect those demands, and exquisite control of the full set of his abilities. He must also have had a massive taste for hard work; no human endeavour of the quality he achieved comes easily.
A plaintive chorus from all the other tenors that have been, are, or will be: "Not fair!"
Mario Del Monaco.....
Not quite@@pavel_SMN
@@pavel_SMN Was not as handsome ....(just a personal view)
Corelli is my all-time favorite Operatic Tenor. No one else could/can milk a melodic line and phrase the way he did. Moreover, he sang with a barely controlled passion which was palpable. His voice conveyed great tragedy in a way I have never heard from any other Tenor. His tendency to engage in scooping and sliding (sometimes almost excessively) did not bother me given the superb quality of his voice. The "ring" that he had from roughly G through Bb was tremendous. Pavarotti had that kind of "ring" on B and high C but not on G through A. Corelli sounded very much like a baritone below G which Pavarotti did not (more of a lyrico-spinto). Thank you so much for posting this.
You are absolutely right in what you say and it is a pleasure to say I totally agree.
completely agree....although to put Maestro Corelli with Pavarotti in the same sentence is almost blasphemy :))
He had a solid stream of sound from his lowest register to his top, no weak spots. And I agree, Corelli's phrasing just melts the soul, everything he sings becomes the gold standard.
Big difference in their voices. Corelli is a Spinto and Pavarotti is a Lyric.
aforwood1 True that :)
But, the comparison (clearly lost by Pavarotti)
is due.
Since Pavarotti decided to "sing" Aida, Trovatore, Turandot, etc...he entered Corelli's field I am afraid.
I really appreciated the early Pavarotti singing in Rigoletto and Fille du Reg. Sadly he chose the path of money...and ruined his own great voice.
Rita Di Trani, Yes, he was divine. We should all be grateful that he existed.
Franco Corelli, heavenly to listen to, delicious to watch.
Grazie per questo Grande Regalo !!! Un canto che prende Anima ,Quore ,Cervello ,Tutto !!!
The greatest tenor of the 20th century ..... period! This aria always makes me cry
Even just listening to his voice and the words which was internalised so well by him and conveyed with utter sincerity and passion... it leaves my heart a-flutter and makes me think... where is my Rodolfo? I want him to warm my cold hand.
Greatest line any guy ever delivered! Who could resist?
Dear Maestro Franco Corelli! How I love you!
They were the best ever! Miss them.
The voice, the man, the excitement, the applause. Love the sub-titles too.
Irresistibile Franco!!!!
Dear Franco you are so much missed. Rest in peace.
Love Corelli singing, I consider his diminuendo unmatched.
His appearance alone is befitting of any romantic lead.
Much missed methinks..
Great Singer Yes you are right the best!!!
Beautiful rendition! I never saw Corelli sing, and had to make do with his TV appearances. This is a terrific recording, Corelli sounds emotionally pumped up. Sometimes they are just "on". I ushered a Sunday Matinee performance to a half empty house in San Francisco in 1950, It was near the end of the season. The opera was Manon Lescaut with Albanese and Bjoerling. One of the best I ever saw.
Corelli sings terrific, Mimi is Tebaldi, unmistakable !!!
Lovely, amourous, poetic.

So lovely and so poetic.
Poetico i romantico.
Thank you so much for posting the English translation! My Italian was never good enough to understand those beautiful words.
And listening to Franco Corelli's incomparable voice singing such stunning poetry always makes my day.
I was there. I saw them all from 1964 on.
How lucky you were!
l'invidio un po'
There has never been anyone to compare to Corelli nor will there ever be. God broke the mold when he was born.
+aforwood1 WHAT?! Caruso, Merli, Pertile, Gigli were pretty comparable (Caruso probably superior).
In my mind he's overrated (Caruso). Corelli has him beat by a mile. Merli, Pertile, Gigli were also good but not better than Corelli. They didn't have the timbre in their voices he has and they all sounded like lyric tenors, which to me is not a strong tenor.
Very happy to read your wonderful defence of my favourite tenor, the greatest of them all:Franco Corelli.
Yes! That is a great truth. Corelli was superior to all and still remains
Only in your delusions. Caruso has been the gold standard for any tenor and will remain in this position for a long, long time. Corelli is great, but his technique is simply not on par.
Very lovely video - Franco Corelli always brings something extra in live performances - it was beatifully paced singing leading to his usual wonderful soaring the heights at 8 minutes! Also like the translations of the text with the photographs.
Corelli semplicemente mostruoso in quest'aria....
So breathtakingly beautiful!!
i cannot stop listening to cut after cut !
WONDEROUS MIRACULOUS VOICE
Senza dubbio nessuno - IL SOMMO IMPERATORE !!!!
Indeed he was, dear Ingrid!

Grazie Maestro Franco Corelli! !!
Bravo!!! MAESTRO!!!
Wow! It was a Magnificent rendition despite the poor recording. That high C was pushed further than anyone I've ever listened to sing this magnificent aria, the one exception being Rashid Bebudov.
Love it!
Me too!!!!!!
💚 Corelli ⭐. Marvelous tenor.🌷
It hurts he is not still here. Thank god for the recordings. I would have given anything to see him and hear him.
Bravissimi entrambi ~ two of the " greatest of all times " ! Thanks for another gem of your
great collection.
Love the sudden diminuendo on "al buio non si trova". Completely unexpected, but it works brilliantly.
What a perfect version! Nothing like it! Can even make out the words. Even knowing Italian, when most people sing you can't even tell there are words. They are so busy, swooping, gliding, doing vibrato, it's like they forget it's a damn story! The words are important! It isn't one long arpeggio!
wmnoffaith1 INDEED.And I thought Dame JOAN had bad diction.Today it's a disgrace with singers directors conductors set designers etc. Arnold Bourbon Amaral
maravilloso.como todos los grandes.................y el es uno de ellos...................cada cual en cuerda.............y momento......cultural.y emociones......en cada cual y cada situacion.artistica............indudablemente......grande..........
John Oregan. Love Corelli. Saw him many times at MET. Both c's are optional. Have no problem with transposition.
SPLENDIDO E MERAVIGLIOSO FRANCO PER VOCALITÀ E INTERPRETAZIONE IN SIMBIOSI CON UNA INDIMENTICABILE RENATA PERFETTA MIMI .
RANCO E RENATA SIETE SEMPRE NEI NOSTRI CUORI! !!!!!!!!!!
Simplemente hermoso!!!!
Przy takim śpiewie......same dreszcze i emocje.....cudownie....
Cazzo che bravo, mi viene da piangere. L'ho scoperto oggi... ignoranza mia ok, ma è davvero impressionante.
Alfredo Kraus said that all Rodolfos end up transposing this aria down, eventually. I think its true. It really is a spinto role. Corellis is the perfect voice for it.
I odn't know that they "all" transpose it down-annwhat is eventually., but I don't think of it as a spinto role, necessarily, but if you do then the spintos would transpose it down, eventually, or early on
he was truly the greatest tenor. Unfortunately, he retired before the world could see him like
the three tenors on TV who were not in his class. By far he was the greatest Calaf.
McMahon Maria indeed. Pavarotti said that if Corelli's performances were broadcast as the three tenors, he would be as famous as he deserved.
We are bringing Corelli back in a hologram performance
Peter Gibbons please hurry! I’m quite old.
Wow, what a voice
che Rodolfo!!!! che sublime voce....romantico e appassionato......chissà vederlo in teatro!!!!!!
Applause well deserved. Glorious!
Superb. That high C....MAGNIFICENT.
This was Corelli at his peak, and what a peak it was! To see him with Tebaldi in this performance would have been a supreme thrill. Both of them were smart: when their voices began to age they retired, and we can always think of them at their best. I wonder how Puccini would have felt if he had had the opportunity to hear his work performed so magnificently.
So lucky. God bless. You saw an icon. No one compares.
Beautiful job! Thank you for posting it!!
How beautifu this is; bravo indeed!
these two were at the very pinnacle of their profession !
these two were the finest
your postings are superb
plesse dont stop
best wishes from across the pond
Thank you for the English subtitles. Forgive my ignorance, but I certainly know outstanding music when I hear it.
NO WORDS TO DISCRIBE IT
Thank you for spoiling us by sharing "nothing but the best." This is OUTSTANDING - from a time when Corelli really "had it" vocally as Rodolfo. Any clips with Corelli from his 1974 Met broadcast of LA BOHEME and any of his traversal of this opera in Torre del Lago in 1976 should be forever BANISHED from any and all file-sharing services known to man, woman, and child. THIS is how Corelli should be remembered - and with Tebaldi as Mimi, too!
ciò a parte, fantasticamente unici!
immortali
Thanks for putting a translation.
Where have the Italian tenors and sopranos gone, most of the present day singers seem to be from Eastern Europe.
ancora e per sempre.....
This is GREAT sininging!!!!!
Corelli reigns!!!
I knew the words to this aria when i was 8 yrs old I am a female
Great video. Beautifully done.
Franco Corelli and Renata Tebaldi, what could be better? - Corelli playing Pinkerton to Tebaldi's Butterfly, which Corelli unfortunately never performed. If he had played Pinkerton, the sight of that devastatingly handsome man would have caused pandemonium in the opera house. Thank you for posting this treasure, Roberta.
I really appreciate your creativity in making this video!
Ahhh, so lovely. Thank you!
Corelli. Is number one of the time
