Mia zia era violinista con Toscanini e quindi capiva qualcosa di musica e di voci. Mi diceva che quando ha accompagnato in quest’opera proprio la Callas e Corelli lei non riusciva a trattenere le lacrime per tanta perfezione e lei non era una grande estimatrice della Callas ma della Tebaldi. Quindi chi mette pollice verso non capisce nulla d’opera lirica.
Perfezione e capacità interpretativa più uniche che rare. Il timbro vocale della Callas si può criticare, ma il pathos delle sue interpretazioni è perso irrimediabilmente, criticare interpretazioni del genere significa meritarsi i prodotti commerciali di poco pregio che ci vengono proposti oggi (anche dai grandi teatri). Il discorso comunque è lungo e complesso. Come invidio sua zia!

Era un personaggio molto conosciuta nell’ambito musicale, era amica di Rubinstein (il famoso pianista) amica di tanti cantanti lirici famosi Tebaldi, Del Monaco, Simionato, Barbieri, Bechi, Pasero (era alessandrino). Poi è stata la prima donna a suonare al Capodanno viennese. Mi manca veramente tanto 😢

Io avevo il biglietto per la seconda esecuzione al Teatro dell'opera di Roma nel gennaio 1958. Avevo 17 anni e un posto in platea in quarta fila (dono di mio padre), ma nella prima esecuzione la Callas abbandonò per i noti motivi e non potei più vederla. Vidi e ascoltai la sublime Anita Cerquetti. Ma la Callas in Norma è stata una perdita che ancor oggi mi dà dolore.@@user-mi2zd7zn9w

For once there was a superb cast for a studio recording. A great soprano, a great tenor, and a great mezzo. Thank goodness Callas insisted on Corelli for the recording. Together they created magic.
Ascoltare questi grandi della lirica, si ha la sensazione di essere trasportarti in un altra dimensione, una forma di estasi musicale. Come vorrei che almeno qualche cantante solo si avvicinasse a queste voci. Oggi non si sente più cantare. oggi si urla, si starnazza. Si vogliono far passare per cantanti, personaggi che si dovrebbero limitare a sagre di paese o al massimo qualche matrimonio. A parte la voce mancano anche di presenza scenica. I cantanti d'oggi recitano, a differenza cei cantanti come la Callas e Corelli entravano nel personaggio, lo facevano proprio. Maria diventava Norma, Franco diventava Flavio. Sta tutta qua la differenza, nostalgia proprio in quest'opera di voci come Joan Sutherland e Montserrat Caballé. Non a caso la poliedricità del personaggio e della sua vocalità ne fanno uno dei ruoli più impervi per voce di soprano. Nostalgia, tanta nostalgia.

I prefer Callas‘ first recording of the role (in spite of the bad recording technique) - or even better the London live version next to a very good Mirto Piccho and a very young Joan Sutherland as Clotilde.

Tout concourt ici à graver un moment historique, que l'on peut réécouter indéfiniment, dont jamais on ne se lasse, et qui établit dans l'oreille du jeune mélomane et pour toujours, la référence à laquelle il comparera le reste toute son existence.
Serafin respecte aime les chanteurs et les sublime, menant l orchestre, en atmosphère accompagnatrice, jamais écrasant les voix. Voilà pourquoi le bel Canto avec lui est mis en valeur

I sincerely hope it will, though I can't find the most remote piece of indication that it will. I wonder if the voices are out there somewhere, too shy to overcome the peer pressure that "opera ain't cool". Now that I think of it, there has never been such a huge amount of people in the upper-middle class; if opera wasn't being shadowed by this ridiculous stereotype that surrounds it and these two (Callas and Corelli) were alive, they would be commanding legions of fans who would happily pay €400+ per ticket on a regular basis.

Yes, the greatest Norma. But Callas' own performance in 1955 at La Scala tops this. Listen to the difference in the way she sings "Qual cor tradisti." Here I think she is too much under of the control of Serafin. The tempo is way too slow and that decreases the drama.
@@ancamg Yes, Corelli is fantastic in this role which requires an heroic, virile voice. Without someone with that kind of strength, the opera doesn't make sense. Why would such a powerful woman as Norma be (hopelessly) attracted to a wimp, which is what too many Polliones are. Pollione is not a long role, but it is key. In my opinion, besides Corelli, Del Monaco was OK, but Vickers was also superb, a truly commanding Roman.
Those that heard live Callas and Corelli were not aware of their fortune nor that the golden age of Opera was at it's end and that from there onwards nothing could be compared.
She sings like a man. Her interpretation is so much more intense than five tenors put together. So passionate yet controlled and refined. She was truly a gift to this world.

Ho avuto il privilegio di vedere e sentire a canale Mezzo un spettacolo con Norma da Gran Teatro Liceu da Barcelona. Mi lasciato un buonissima impresione Sondra Radvanovski l'interpreta di Norma. Not only are the Voices of Callas and Corelli, beyond the pale...beyond comparison..But their visual stage appearance is to put it the best way..Sexy. Callas, had a great beauty that your eyes, when she was on stage...held your attention and added a romance quality to the performance. Mr Corelli, was just so Handsome! He added such a level of Masculinity to his roles, that like a Megaphone, swept you up into the Aura of his stage presents. Many of my Opera loving gay brothers would watch his performances and wished that we were Norma, or Tosca or Butterfly..just to be enfolded in those arms of his and be in a duet, with him..(sigh..lol)

I have heard about how women used to constantly stalk Franco in NYC, for years. In 1974, a group of women mobbed him outside his apartment as he was trying to walk his dog and they broke some of his ribs!

Esatto caro Paolo olianis, franco corelli, si può dire che rispetto gli altri colleghi, e' stato un evoluzione vocale, non solo era bello ma pure alto, nella lirica i tenori almeno durante il novecento erano rari sia i belli che i tenori che passavano una certa altezza. Detto questo, corelli si differenziava come timbro, tenore e baritono insieme, rendevano la sua voce calda, potente da tenore e morbida tipica del baritono interessante e sopratutto accompagnava gli acuti e non li lanciava come facevano altri tenori come se gridassero.
Corelli era alto circa 1,88, Bonisolli 1,90 Milnes 1,90, anche Zancanaro era molto alto, tra l'altro erano accomunati da una indubbia presenza scenica.

Callas is the greatest soprano of the 20th century along with Rosa Ponselle. Corelli is fine but not on Callas level in that respect in my opinion. Caruso will never be equaled.

Also, by the time she was more seriously considering projects like that using her own earlier vocal recordings, Onassis was jealously controlling her. He belittled them (and her). It was one of Zeffirelli’s enduring great disappointments that he wasn’t able to complete a film version of the Lisbon Traviata.

Funny I used to ran away from my father when he sings a la Caruso or Lanza when I was growing up. So embarrassing. Now how I wished I listened to him and uncle's tenor voices when they were alive. I discovered Corelli 4 yrs. ago and I still listen to him.
Such a sad life I wish at least she would have left behind a child. But her legacy lives & Onassis is a footnote in history.He broke her heart to marry someone else.
This is by far the better of her two studio recordings. She is fabulous in both, but I prefer her in the stereo version, and the supporting cast is incomparable.
I worship this recording. Corelli and Ludwig are the closest to worthy anyone can hope to be to partner The One. The earlier studio recording is less successful as a complete presentation but it stands for me as the most complete version of the Callas assumption available. Everything is just right vocally musically dramatically and well captured by the technicians. So that is everything to me.
That recording has a poor supporting cast, Stignani and Filipeschi. A pity because the soprano sang Norma in Trieste that same year with, guess who, Franco Corelli.

Ascoltare questi grandi della lirica, si ha la sensazione di essere trasportarti in un altra dimensione, una forma di estasi musicale. Come vorrei che almeno qualche cantante solo si avvicinasse a queste voci. Oggi non si sente più cantare. oggi si urla, si starnazza. Si vogliono far passare per cantanti, personaggi che si dovrebbero limitare a sagre di paese o al massimo qualche matrimonio. A parte la voce mancano anche di presenza scenica. I cantanti d'oggi recitano, a differenza cei cantanti come la Callas e Corelli entravano nel personaggio, lo facevano proprio. Maria diventava Norma, Franco diventava Flavio. Sta tutta qua la differenza, nostalgia proprio in quest'opera di voci come Joan Sutherland e Montserrat Caballé. Non a caso la poliedricità del personaggio e della sua vocalità ne fanno uno dei ruoli più impervi per voce di soprano. Nostalgia, tanta nostalgia.

I prefer Callas‘ first recording of the role (in spite of the bad recording technique) - or even better the London live version next to a very good Mirto Piccho and a very young Joan Sutherland as Clotilde.

Dès les premières mesures, on est submergé par la magie de cette musique. Dès les premières paroles de Callas, on est envouté par la présence qui émane de la voix de cette immense tragédienne. Dès les premiers mots de Corelli, on est envouté par son timbre incomparable, servi par cette prononciation vénitienne si particulière (le célèbre zézaiement de la lagune). Tout concourt ici à graver un moment historique, que l'on peut réécouter indéfiniment, dont jamais on ne se lasse, et qui établit dans l'oreille du jeune mélomane et pour toujours, la référence à laquelle il comparera le reste toute son existence.
Serafin respecte aime les chanteurs et les sublime, menant l orchestre, en atmosphère accompagnatrice, jamais écrasant les voix. Voilà pourquoi le bel Canto avec lui est mis en valeur

I sincerely hope it will, though I can't find the most remote piece of indication that it will. I wonder if the voices are out there somewhere, too shy to overcome the peer pressure that "opera ain't cool". Now that I think of it, there has never been such a huge amount of people in the upper-middle class; if opera wasn't being shadowed by this ridiculous stereotype that surrounds it and these two (Callas and Corelli) were alive, they would be commanding legions of fans who would happily pay €400+ per ticket on a regular basis.

Yes, the greatest Norma. But Callas' own performance in 1955 at La Scala tops this. Listen to the difference in the way she sings "Qual cor tradisti." Here I think she is too much under of the control of Serafin. The tempo is way too slow and that decreases the drama.

@@ancamg Yes, Corelli is fantastic in this role which requires an heroic, virile voice. Without someone with that kind of strength, the opera doesn't make sense. Why would such a powerful woman as Norma be (hopelessly) attracted to a wimp, which is what too many Polliones are. Pollione is not a long role, but it is key. In my opinion, besides Corelli, Del Monaco was OK, but Vickers was also superb, a truly commanding Roman.

Cara Signora . E senza dubio,Maria Callas e Franco Corelli e stata la piu famosa copia Norma-Polione. Inoltre sono d'accordo che non sentiamo mai una Norma di questo calibro. Ho avuto il privilegio di vedere e sentire a canale Mezzo un spettacolo con Norma da Gran Teatro Liceu da Barcelona. Mi lasciato un buonissima impresione Sondra Radvanovski l'interpreta di Norma. Si puo trovare su RUclips. Per favore Signora, posso vedere la vostra opinione ,che sembra avere una buona conoscenza del fenomeno La lirica. Grazie.

Not only are the Voices of Callas and Corelli, beyond the pale...beyond comparison..But their visual stage appearance is to put it the best way..Sexy. Callas, had a great beauty that your eyes, when she was on stage...held your attention and added a romance quality to the performance. Mr Corelli, was just so Handsome! He added such a level of Masculinity to his roles, that like a Megaphone, swept you up into the Aura of his stage presents. Many of my Opera loving gay brothers would watch his performances and wished that we were Norma, or Tosca or Butterfly..just to be enfolded in those arms of his and be in a duet, with him..(sigh..lol)

I have heard about how women used to constantly stalk Franco in NYC, for years. Esatto caro Paolo olianis, franco corelli, si può dire che rispetto gli altri colleghi, e' stato un evoluzione vocale, non solo era bello ma pure alto, nella lirica i tenori almeno durante il novecento erano rari sia i belli che i tenori che passavano una certa altezza. Detto questo, corelli si differenziava come timbro, tenore e baritono insieme, rendevano la sua voce calda, potente da tenore e morbida tipica del baritono interessante e sopratutto accompagnava gli acuti e non li lanciava come facevano altri tenori come se gridassero.
Maria Callas è la sola e unica!
Corelli era alto circa 1,88, Bonisolli 1,90 Milnes 1,90, anche Zancanaro era molto alto, tra l'altro erano accomunati da una indubbia presenza scenica.

At the end, Corelli's "addio" soars above Callas, the chorus and the orchestra--what lungs that man had, to match his voice!
Callas is the greatest soprano of the 20th century along with Rosa Ponselle. Corelli is fine but not on Callas level in that respect in my opinion. Caruso will never be equaled.

Also, by the time she was more seriously considering projects like that using her own earlier vocal recordings, Onassis was jealously controlling her. He belittled them (and her). It was one of Zeffirelli’s enduring great disappointments that he wasn’t able to complete a film version of the Lisbon Traviata.

Funny I used to ran away from my father when he sings a la Caruso or Lanza when I was growing up. So embarrassing. Now how I wished I listened to him and uncle's tenor voices when they were alive. I discovered Corelli 4 yrs. ago and I still listen to him.

This is by far the better of her two studio recordings. She is fabulous in both, but I prefer her in the stereo version, and the supporting cast is incomparable.

I worship this recording. Corelli and Ludwig are the closest to worthy anyone can hope to be to partner The One. The earlier studio recording is less successful as a complete presentation but it stands for me as the most complete version of the Callas assumption available. Everything is just right vocally musically dramatically and well captured by the technicians. So that is everything to me.
That recording has a poor supporting cast, Stignani and Filipeschi. A pity because the soprano sang Norma in Trieste that same year with, guess who, Franco Corelli.
