A touching performance with the haunting melody from a single piano, and a slight smile, Gedda knows his voice, even at this age, is in fine form. Thank you for posting this elegant version. 💔

In 1974 I heard on radio Gedda perform this aria, recorded I believe in the 60's and let me tell you, I shiver at the thought of it. The floating, sustained note was so effortless, so tenderly soft, carrying through a musical silent note to the descent. Again, effortless, no straining, a gentle quiet note which, as you say, was heartbreakingly beautiful to be unforgettable and unmatched. Sadly, I cannot find that performance on youtube.
Since I discovered this version, I find myself coming back and listening to it every single day, and sometimes 2 or 3 times a day. It's in my opinion, with Gigli's version, the most emotional interpretation of this song. You can feel the pain of the words. And the fact that Gedda looks vulnerable on the stage here for some reasons, almost like a child over school stage performing an exam on behalf of all school board, add a lot to the drama of this version. This is Gold. And the low views numbers mean one thing, jewels are always hard to find.

I will add the same comment. Listening to Nikolai Gedda sing this aria from Bizet's Pearl Fishers is just heartbreaking. I find it hard to comprehend the technicalities and style as the emotion is so over powering. Each time I listen and watch this video I am overcome by the piercing of my heart. And didn't the audience respond. A remarkable video.
This is an amazing technique! Looks almost like playback singing! To look this relaxed when singing difficult pieces is extraordinary! Kaufmann should watch this 😄

I am still returning. His voice is so creamy, so controlled, so beautiful. He sings with a trace of a typical smile without any visible effort. His versatility was incredible indeed. He could sing as soft as Gigli. His ringing voice shock shocks me incredibly in selected pars, mainly from a certain age. Neverending admiration
Hah! Yes, I noticed that smile. I think he knows (rightfully) that his voice is in fine form. So effortlessly hitting that mezza voce high sustain, like no other.

He was great, as always. I do not know what happened. I must say that I do not know many other artists like him. Actually, I only know him. I heard him indisposed in the archive live footage, I don't know what it was (maybe Tosca??). It wasn't very good. He fought like a lion and lost. But we are only human. I have a suspicion that he was the greatest lyric tenor of XX. century. I do not like comparisons like this. Pavarotti, di Stefano, and others are also great But Gedda sang the Czech opera "Dalibor" in Czech. I could not believe it. He was simply incredible. Neverending admiration for all unique singers and mainly for the immortal voice of Nicolai Gedda.
I can't believe how effortless he makes this appear. Though Bjorling is my idol, I have always thought Gigli's performance of this to be the greatest. Maybe I was wrong.
Amazing, especially from an artist near the end of his career. I saw Gedda in the theater only twice, but I heard him many times on the records with Beverly Sills. In this aria, my gold standard has always been Gedda and Polenzani. Another rendition, from France Has Talent, which I was sure I would detest, was by Stefan Cifolelli. True, he had a microphone for the tv show, but I was amazed by the technique and beautiful timbre, along with the voix mixte and the messa di voce.
Maestro Gedda is 55 years old here and still with such a superb voice. I thought I heard someone at the end, right before the applause, say, "That was great!" Did anyone else hear this? Or am I hearing wrong?

Personnellement, je préfère qu'il y ait l'accompagnement orchestral de l'original: je trouve l'orchestration de G.Bizet tout-à-fait remarquable.
