    I never even knew the float level was adjustable on the stock Solex carburetor. It’s one of those things you don’t usually mess with. Thank you so much for sharing this information, should I ever run into it I’m going to use this! But I’m Glad to see you up and moving again, that’s really what’s important!

    Miss your more frequent content. My God bless you and keep you healthy. I have never met you but it is obvious that that you are a good man. I love VWs' and you have given me so many tips about my car. I wish that we could return to the good days when cars were things that you could work on yourself. I grew up in the 60s' and we were always tinkering with something on our cars. I had a 69 bug that I learned how to work on cars. We also had a 62 Plymouth that was a simple car that required regular attention. My Toyotas' are great cars but not user friendly as far as fixing things are concerned. Get well and get back in action.

    Thanks for the pro vid EZGZ! One side note, I had a pict on my 1600 a while back and had a richness issue and fuel boil over when shutdown. I friend of mine was telling me about the newer ethanol fuel and it has a lower boiling point and it's buoyancy was different than the ethanol free. So i added an extra washer under the needle/seat(2 thick washers total) and that did the trick(the carb was setup per the book then jetted to the engine) man I was having a steak burrito the other day and thought EZGZ is missing out on one of these! Hope you've made it down to your local burrito joint and had yourself a treat! Catch ya on the flip side

There were some clues in your older videos that you may have been instructed to exercise a little more....anyhoooo it is great to see you. The carb top gasket in these rebuild kits are at least twice as thick as the original paper ones. This is likely the cause of flooding issues. Extra washer is the right move.

  • @gavinralph2910
    @gavinralph2910 11 месяцев назад

    Are those written book instructions correct? surely if the fuel level was too high you would use a THINNER washer, basically moving the float valve nearer the float, cutting the fuel flow earlier as the float rises?

    • @TheEZGZ
      @TheEZGZ  10 месяцев назад

      The book is right. A thicker washer pushes the inlet valve down against the float and shuts flow off sooner which lowers thee fuel level

    Hi EZGZ Sir. Can you comment on the 34 PICT Carb versus EMPI Progressive carb? Is the Progressive carb more economical in terms of fuel consumption because of the initial carb port opening is smaller...

    • @TheEZGZ
      @TheEZGZ  7 месяцев назад +1

      Fuel consumption needs to stay around 24 MPG for normal driving. The engine and heads need the fuel to help keep cool. The progressive carb works well "if" you can find the parts to tune it properly and will allow more fuel and higher rpm. Some folks swear by them but for a street car I'll take dual carbs most of the time.

    Hey EZ.
    Great to see that you are back. I hope you are feeling better.
    Please.
    Can you give me some advice on using a new cam and cam followers in a twin port 1600.
    I have been told I need to use ‘cam lube’, then run the engine after the rebuild at around 1500/2000 rpm for 20 mins to harden the parts.
    Is this right?
    Just seems extreme to me for an air cooled engine that is stationary.
    Thanks.
    All the best.👍🏾🛠🇬🇧

    • @TheEZGZ
      @TheEZGZ  Год назад +1

      Every new cam I ever bought came with a little jar of break in lube. If yours didn't come with it you can use some really thick motor oil. Lucas makes a good product. Do not under any circumstances use grease or assembly lube as a substitute. Auto parts store might even have a specific cam lube product.
      Yes you want to start it and immediately keep the revs about 2000 RPM so there is plenty of oil saturating the cam during that first 20 minute break in. Don't worry about the timing being perfect or idle screws. You'll be running on the mains. Just watch and listen for major oil leaks and keep it running.
      Then dump the oil while it's still hot including the filter. Refill and let the engine completely cool down. Recheck your valve clearance and your good to go for many miles and smiles.
      It would be nice to pick up a VW shop manual that explains all this. Don't trust everything you see and hear on the internet.
      Also a good idea to use break in oil or get some zinc additive.

    • @soggz4246
      @soggz4246 Год назад

      @@TheEZGZ Thank you EZ.
      Yes. I have bought some 20/50 high in zinc oil, for the initial start and cam burn.
      I’ll then empty it and refill with 30 weight mineral. When driving, do you suggest not loading the engine for the first 500 miles? I have two 30ml satchels of Cam lube, which I bought separately.
      I have a Haynes manual for reference.👍🏾🛠

      She’s up and running.
      Did the ‘cam burn’ last night and took it for a short run, then. Changed the oil.
      Now I have to reset the timing and carb, as it keeps stalling at junctions and won’t tick over.

    Im converting a 66 to a dual circuit master cylinder. (drum brakes) As the residual pressure valves arent available, I salvaged some and got them working . Now I discover that new dual circuit cylinders wont accept the valves.
    Bentely says I need them. so what do I do ?
    Use the stupid aftermarket ones at $20? each ?

    • @TheEZGZ
      @TheEZGZ  Год назад

      Not telling you what you should do. But I run whatever came on that year of car and don't worry about it. The purpose of dual brake system was safety in the event that you got a hole or broke a line the system would stop you. Seems to me that the emergency brake was ment to do the same thing.
      Inspect and or replace your entire brake system with new parts and keep them drum brakes adjusted at regular intervals like bentely suggests

      New old stock (NOS)
      Over the years the demand and quality has changed due to the fact that VW people are cheap skates.
      Sometimes the price can be a clue as you get what you pay for. Buy only what you need and if you like it buy more of the same to keep in inventory. Modern fuels are hard on gaskets and O-rings.

    is it normal that without the Air Cleaner system the engine shuts off.. then when it shuts off at idle so when you remove the small hose from the intake neck it shuts off immediately, for a while it just raised the idle revs...

    • @TheEZGZ
      @TheEZGZ  Год назад

      When you allow air to come into the intake manifold at idle vacuum your reducing the fuel to air mixture and the engine will stall. When you add or remove a dirty air cleaner your also changing the fuel to air ratio that can effect idle.

      Yes! it's not going to hurt anything if it's off by a little bit. Replace your spark plugs while you do a tune up and check the easiest one to get to after a couple tanks of gas. And of course notice how it starts and runs to be sure.

    Question, I'm running dual ICT carbs on a stroked 1600. When I get on the gas, especially mid to higher RPMs, I get a bit of popping. Any ideas on what to look for?

      If you're running a 009 dizy, open the accelerator pump adjuster up to full. The popping is probably caused when you open the throttle up and cause a lean spot. The new setting will overcome that lean period.

      @@Paulman50 running pertronics with vac advance. It keeps popping at sustained throttle

      Was it always this way? Most times it's like Paulman said but the list of other possibilities is long. Here are some things to check
      Spark plug read
      Plug wires
      Spark advance
      Vacuumm leaks
      compression
      valve clearance
      accelerator pumps not working
      Can you borrow a different set of carbs?

      @@TheEZGZ It has always been temperamental in one way or another. It had a lot of blobby so I put a new set of jugs/pistons and heads on it. new plugs and wires too. The previous electric dizzy ended up with broken wires so I got a pertronics dizzy. It isn't as poppy if I bring up the rpms quite slowly. This is all while stationary mind you, the vehicle isn't a North Dakota winter drivable one.

      @@smonroeh Sounds like you spent some money and worked your butt off. With that said I wish you would have gone just a bit farther and split the case.
      It's so helpful to look at the #2 main bearing and also the camshaft and lifters. Sounds like you are very close to a sweet set up. One of my first cars came with a 1776, Norris Cam and dual 34 ICT webers it had dual glass packs and heater boxes and I drove it that way the first winter. Those carbs never gave me a problem. The throttles were cable operated. With all the work you did it's probably not that dirty yet. I'll bet you could tear it down in a weekend and see what that bottom looks like. It's good to have at least a new cam and lifters. If someone stroked the motor they may have put to hot of cam in it for the compression and carb choice you have.

    My bug runs when the choke is on.
    However, once I hit the gas after it has warmed up and off the step the bug will die. No matter what adjustments I do to the volume screw or the bypass adjust, nothing happens.

      You need a spark advance timing check and also make sure your accelerator pump squirter is working my friend

      Also, no idle, is a clogged idle jet.
      That would be the brass hex jet in the passenger dide of the carb.
