I just revived my motorcycle AGM that was getting low cranking indicators. It was a sealed maint. Free AGM but had glued plugs on top… so I popped them out and sure enough the gauze matting was dry-ish so I made a mix of distilled water and citric acid and used a syringe and filled to top of plates. Let set for an hour and topped off again then charged up with 10-20 amp charger and placed on my recon mode for 24hrs. It started with a fail test of 9 volts at 310amp draw. Now holds at 10.6-10.8 volts at load. I resealed the plugs with ultra black/ultra gray RTV and it’s back to service.
Keep in mind if you locate the cells, you could drill a hole in top and top off with electrolytes and recharge. The material drys out after a period of time. After all Absorbed acid Glass Material is the key. They still require a damp coating of acid solution. AGM’s prefer an amp rate of half their Amp Hr rating to replenish. Prolong trickle charging tends to shorten their cycle.

Pretty sure repair mode pulses the current while keeping voltage at higher than normal charge level, typically around 16v.

  • @Bizija123

I think the repair mode is for weak but good batteries. I purchased a nice top don 8amp charger with pulse repair capability (about 50 dollars) and tried it on a regular flooded battery (7 years old) which was showing 490 cca on the tester and it was rated for 640. I ran pulse repair for 7 hours and I eventually heard boiling inside the battery. So I topped off the charge, tested again, and it was very strong with 580 ccas showing. Pulse does work but I guess the battery needs to not be dead as a doornail.

Good video, Exide are good batteries. I wouldn't give up on it yet, I would try a Pulse Tech PowerPulse passive battery desulfator and leave it on your battery for a month or more. Pulsetech claims to use a patented frequency to desulfate rather then voltage spikes and will extend your battery life up to three times. I have one on my 2001 BMW battery for the past three years, and have no problems starting even though I only drive about 5 miles a day, 25 miles a week.

You have a bad cell, nothing is going to fix that but as far as de-sulfating, this charger does work. It has brought back 3 of my dead batteries to working condition, all charge completely and hold their charge now, the worst one went from a CCA reading of 212 back up to over 700 in about 30 hrs on the repair pulse mode. The charger works great and does what it is supposed to. No charger can repair a bad cell, nothing will fix that. Your review stating it is nothing more than a slow charger and that the pulse repair doesn't do anything is based on your lack of knowledge and misuse and
    is grossly inaccurate.

No, my pulse repair charger zaps it with up to 20v. AGM can take the higher voltage in. The repair is not for wet cell batteries. You're talking steady charge not pulse. 13.9 to 14.6 is where you should be charging at in your car with rating voltage at 12.6 to 13.1.

Add water, charge with caps open in a well ventilated area. Distilled water only, a little below the tubes. 1/8" or so but for sure covering the plates. If AGM make sure the glass mat is obviously wet. You can add water until you see it but same applies, charge caps open.
You can use a volt meter and stick the probes on one of the posts and go down the line you should see ~2.1v increase every cell. So 2.1, 4.2, 6.3,ect. And you can find what cell is the most problematic. There's some desulferate products on the market you can use as well. Good ol winter and cars sitting. Disconnect the battery, if you can use it in your winter car too that's the best or just use it for anything to keep it active here and there just give it a charge every few weeks. That will help tremendously. I like throwing mine in with my daily as i have a big system utilizing multiple batteries so linking another is no big deal. Never come out to a dead car I'll tell you that 😂

You battery putting out 9:44 @ 13v doesn’t meant means it’s toast as you put just because it’s not meeting it’s when new cca spec.
If you let the battery sit overnight yo bleed off surface charge pistons charging and it still tests at
    Approx 12.6v & 450-500+cca’s that battery
Could easily start the avg car not problem for who knows, maybe another 1.5-2+yrs or so.
But I have hound the lower priced digital battery testers to not be accurate when it comes to cca esp when testing old batteries your trying to revive.
That’s why I only use old school battery load tester
that puts a direct short on the battery to see if it holds a min of 10v or more for 10-15seconds & what cca is showing during the 10-15second dead short test too.
But most importantly at the end of test your looking for batt voltage to recover quickly above 12v again to 12.4-5-6 range just after test & cca to be a min of 400-425+cca at the end of the 10-15 second dead short load test.

Noco Genius smart chargers have a force mode to charge a dead battery lower then a volt. The Noco Genius 5 and 10 chargers also have a repair mode for heavily desulfated batteries. I use a PulseTech PowerPulse passive battery desulfator that uses a patented frequency to desululfate a battery. I have a Duralast Gold battery that I let sit for a year even though I disconnected it and it only had a charge of 11.2 volts, I tried using an automatic 6 amp charger for 14 hours, and it still would not start my 2001 BMW. I then used my Schumacher 1 amp manual charger for 72 hours along with my PowerPulse desulfator, and left the PowerPulse attached all week, now the battery is starting the car even though it is 7 years old, my point is desulfating a battery may take a week or longer.

CTEK 5.0 is the ticket for AGM (as well as traditional) batteries. I just finished running the recond on a 6 yr old AGM battery in my BMW. This battery had been on a CTEK regular mode which goes into maintenance mode after initial charge for more than a month and a half. Battery is rated at 800CCA. Testing with CTEK battery tester it tested @675CCA straight off the charger. After Running CTEK 5.0 AGM/Recond it tests @925CCA. What more could you ask for?

My experience is completely the same... or ever worse for that matter. This particular charger even makes the battery CCA and capacity worse after using the repair function... and I always kept the fluid level up. The only thing that helped a bit was to overcharge the battery at 10A using a lab power supply and leaving the electrolyte to boil for a few hours. I guess it would be even better to use a DC output from a welder, but I don't want to cause explosions nor fire. At that point I gave up on repairing old lead acid batteries until I find any better method. That's my 5 cent.
