- i'm sorry i kind of half-assed it with the conclusion, i've been putting this video off for months and i can't work any longer on it
i need to move on to something else
nice video but there is a way to get the pistol even before you get the crowbar
play the game as usual until you put the crystal in the machine.. thing
pull the crystal out immediately after you put the crystal in and start the "cutscene"
doing this will make a vortigaunt not despawn
run straight for the door where the scientist is helping the security guard
wait until the guard gets up (you may not know this but if you wait around the guard revives and lead him into the testing chamber
if the guard dies you can grab his gun and boom you have the pistol and you only *indirectly* killed him

Easier way: wait for the guard to be revived after the test lab experiment in the beginning, then push him to the falling computer (which is usually supposed to squish unaware gordon). Profit
@@neonicxhi. why are you not allowed to pick up weapons? You just shouldn't use them for the challenge, so why is it wrong to pick them up?

The door glitch that gives you infinite health is because valve accidentally set the crush damage value to a negative number.
It wasn't an accident. They specifically made it not deal damage because if Barney got crushed by the door, you'd get a game over.

@@dank6554 the theory is they set the damage amount to a negative for testing, but never put it back to normal.
@@dank6554 They could have targeted Barney to a func_relay, and then to the gameover trigger. And when the door trigger is triggered, then run killtarget on the func_relay, effectively killing the relay itself, which will then not trigger gameover if barney is killed.
Thats what I think they have made with other story targets. In certain situations in the game, some vital personell are intentionally killed in the story, which would then trigger gameover, but by killing the relay, gameover isn't triggered when the vital personell have done its vital job.

9:00 In the Hammer editor you can set the value for damage that doors and other objects give you if you block them. This one was accidentally set to negative damage somehow.
It's not an accident. Because that Barney is vital for progess they didn't want him getting crushed by that door

@@Damian-cilr2 What I know you can't set damage to 0. If you set damage to 0, it will deal 1 damage instead. Thats how I remember it. It was a long time I edited for godsrc.

12:02 You could've just hit the ground with your crowbar until the func_breakable that normally triggers on the Gonarch's death explosion breaks and lets you through. (As far as I'm aware, that's how it works; I could be misremembering.)
This video was very fun to watch, and well edited too. It definitely deserves way more views than it has right now.
You could actually save all your ammo in the last big momma room by glitching her to stop her from entering the room then hit the ground where she would die with your crowbar to actually open the hole i recommend using the command +fire and touching some grass while the hole gets opened automatically
actually there is a way to skip the crowbar. you have to catch a vortigaunt during the resonance cascade by pulling the cart out of the antimass spectrometer, lead the barney in the next room over to the vort, and talk to him constantly so he's not able to fight back against the vort's jolts. after that, ignore the crowbar in front of the glass door and the few crowbars that show up later
But the third crowbar is necessary, as you have to break through an air vent before reaching to that security guard that dies at the beginning of "residue processing"
8:12 when i discovered this, i felt like the happiest person in the world, hearing 200 pickup sounds was so satisfiying!
When a func_door is blocked from reaching its open/closed state, it damages the entity that is blocking it. In this particular section of surface area, the security guard dying ends the run, and he would get gibbed by the door a lot in testing, so they decided to make it impossible for the door to kill him. The problem is, a damage value of 0 isn't valid, so they set the damage to -1 so that the guard would never get killed by the door.
This glitch can also be done on the 2nd door that the guard has to open for you.

Tbh the self imposed no smg for pistol ammo is the biggest obstacle imo but then again I didn't run this XD well done man.

You can actually break the hole that the gonarch makes when it does with your crowbar and continue normally. I had to do this on my first play through since the gonarch never jumped down from the tunnel.
A breakable patch of floor at Gonarch's Lair isn't purely scripted.
The Glock is my most used weapon and the .357 is a decent problem solver, if you have good aim.
Also the Glock has a damage of 8 while the MP5 just has a damage of 5 in HL. In HL:S the MP5 also makes a damage of 8 but the glock still has very low spread, what makes it a very nice weapon for most enemy types, even on medium ranges.
And the Magnum, just a Glock with ammo shortage but on steroids, it makes 40 damage and has zero spread, basically a sniper without scope.
Also the Glock is the only ranged weapon besides the crossbow, that can shoot under water. Wich definately helps with Black Mesas Ichtyosaur infested waters.
If i'm honest, i mostly switch to the Glock if Situations get tricky because it's fast to reload, has good accuracy and damage, good rpm and uses over abundand ammo.
If i remember correctly, in the gonarch fight at the last chamber where the gonarch stands right above you, the floor part where the gonarch is scripted to explode when it dies it's actually breakable.
technically you don,t have to get a crowbar by luring a guard into the chamber and wait until he's killed by a vortigaunt then use the pistol as your crowbar
you can literally just break the floor the gonarch breaks in the final bit of that chapter with the crowbar :)

9:15 it happens because doors in hl1 usually do damage,but for some reason when they were making the map they set the damage value of the door to -1,which instead of doing damage it heals you.
Now do this with the Hard Life mod (when it comes out)

In general, you could pass the game without picking up the crowbar at the beginning, just wait until the scientist revives the guard at the beginning, then bring the guard to the vartigont and then take the barney gun to break the glass

Bro! You can skip getting the crowbar by pulling the sample back out of the antimass spectrometer. A vortigaunt is spawned as a fancy effect but gets caught on the test sample before it can teleport back away. You can then lure a guard in front of rhe vortigaunt in a position where the vort can see him bit he cant shoot the vort. The vortigaunt will eventually kill the guard and you will have a pistol. Use the pistol to smash the glass door and bypass the crowbar alltogether
now beat half life 2 with the first two weapons xddd

The most interesting fact: Half-Life also can be beaten with crowbar only without any weapons, such as pistols.
This is pretty feasible in vr. Played pretty much up till the coast with just the pistol it’s a lot of fun
2:30 if you slide on the right side instead of the left you can safely get to the bottom every time
i always find it easier on the left, and this was the only time in a run that ive messed that up TWICE

2:10 Is it really necessary to murder this guard with a crowbar?
Maybe in the spirit of the challenge of using “pistol only,” you could try and distract him so that the zombie kills him, seeing as you may need the ammo.
That way you don’t have to use the crowbar to murder, so the spirit of the “pistol only” challenge is better preserved!
PS. I disagree that picking up MP5s just for their ammo (because they use the same 9mm ammunition) disqualifies you from the “pistol only” challenge, as long as you don’t actually shoot the MP5s.

new idea: beating the gearbox expansions with only the weapons used by the NPCs in game AND their tactics. obviously you can beat blue shift with only a pistol or opposing force with only the smg and shotgun but can you do it without moving during combat?
I managed to kill gonarch without infinite health glitch you can explosive jump onto its head, crouch and hit him with crowbar for like 5 secs then jump off heal in pool and repeat, although this was only possible with a lot of save scumming it is still more legitimate than using the door method but a lot more painful and time consuming. Now i'm at Nihilanth and the challenge has turned out to be all for nothing, wish I had found this video first.
Nobody tell this guy he can get the pistol before the first crowbar if he pulls the cart out of the anti-mass spectrometer to about in the middle of the path so it catches a vortigaunt, and then wait for the scientist to revive the guard and bring the guard to the test chamber and spam E while the vortigaunt shoots him so he doesnt kill it

You can actually get the pistol early by waiting for the guard getting CPR to get up then having him crushed by the falling machine. Then you can skip the crowbar too.

Can you beat half life by only using explosives? (and triggering explosive barrels with your pistol)
You can actually skip power up without using tripmines with some precise jumps, but as the rules say you could use any glitch, which would imply you can use change level delay with "wait" commands which wouldn't even require you to use scripts, just a way to spam the wait command , change level delay is basically delaying the map change trigger, whilst you delay it you can move and because maps in the end of blast pit/begining of power up intersect you can just phase through the wall, nice run nonetheless
