The best version in my opinion is the one in Tokyo Japan 1990 and Rosie’s vocals in that version just add that little kick even more to how epic it already sounds
I think that the syracuse one is good, but me personally I would prefer to listen to the tokyo one as The NPG the jam segment after the song is amazing and again Rosie’s voice wins me over on that version to, and I can’t speak for people who were there but I’d recommend listening to the Tokyo 1990 version
Incredible how much Prince and The Revolution's show evolved within the next year. Listen to this version, then the Atlanta version and finally the Syracuse version.
For a more drastic example, watch the music video to Baby I'm A Star, then watch the Atlanta version of that, then the 85 Grammy Awards. It was as if he learned how to perform over the course of 8 months

KEXP played this on Kevin Cole's Prince tribute show on 2024.06.07. The depths they go to find music is insane. Anyway, the energy in this version of the song is out of control. So sad that Prince is gone; the man was a genius.
The studio version is a masterpiece but so difficult to get the same vibe when played life it had to be sped up and vocals weren’t really good and the drums didn’t sound right. The 1990 version is way better. This is a mess compared to the nude tour version

Thank you!
Great stuff! It tickles me how he fluffs the first words and styles it out with "Have you heard this before?", ha ha! 😉
One of the best live versions of this song I've ever heard
Yes, I agree.
Listen to the summer 84 rehearsal version. A million times better than this. The greatest version of this song barr none

live in Syracuse march 30 1985 was the best version and I was at that one so I know for sure.

Not live picture.
Think he stopped preforming this song live for religious reasons. There’s no video of it
