To be fair, when Billy Gibbins asked Prince how he played it, Prince said he fell across it accidentally and hadn't been able to play it again since, so you've done a fantastic job here. Certainly better than the transciber in the Purple Rain Off The Record band score book ;-)

It's really interesting that you say @3:32 "that is so Van Halen" given that Prince and Van Halen both recorded at Sunset Sound Studios and that in 1983 Van Halen was transitioning to his 5150 home studio. Prince recorded When Doves Cry in March 1984. Prince had recorded there at Sunset Sound since 1981 and I wonder if they ever crossed paths there or if Prince listened in on a VH session.
Yeah, I wondered the same thing. But even if they never did, Prince was the sort of guy who would have totally listened to other guitarists and learned from them.

Thank you Henk. Yeah, that part is reallllly difficult to achieve. It just sounds like an open A string, played quite staccato, but it's slightly sharp. I heard that Prince played this intro with the tape slowed down. So perhaps it's the E string, sped up...
Many thanks for this!!! the start of that lick (just before the very fast part), i think this is played on the first frets of the guitar, that is how i have seen a video of wendy playing it...
Thanks Jurgen. Yes, I watched that clip (and many others) whilst trying to work it out. And I LOVE Wendy, but to me, it just sounds closer to the original when played up at the 12th fret. Prince used an octave pedal on this performance (as did I) so both those ranges of notes are present.
Not Em or Am. A Dorian over the whole thing! Except for that G diminished lick (tritone substitution). The V chord is where all the cool sh*t happens per usual.

Out of curiosity are you running the guitar thru an Eventide pitchfactor or H9 or a boss harmonist? I didn’t read what you used. But it sounds like Prince was running thru some Eventide
Hi Frank. No, I created the sound in Logic Pro, based on their "Woolly Octave" preset. It has some compression, overdrive and of course - an octave unit.
@ yes that octave sound I didn’t realize there was a harmonizer of some type on the guitar, until I listened to you doing it. It was ahh yes, there is that sound, gives the guitar, teeth, like if on puts it down, it would wild horse the sounds. If I make sense. It gave it the right feel. But sound is great as well as the playing. I have the pitchfactor & was messing w the H9/910 tones, this is like 10 yrs ago. But I was doing the intro notes to Van Halen’s Pleasure dome, there is a back noise, u figured was Eddie’s finger on a string giving a harmonic type sound. But with the settings I got the same exact thing when I played the intro. My younger daughter kept asking “ how did you, but how, I don’t know, but it’s just like the studio recording.” She was at that point interested in playing guitar
Thanks heaps Dan! Yeah I was happy with the tone too. I created it within Logic, based upon the 'Woolly Octave" preset. Yo Danny, Again you nailed it! Prince was as fast as anybody with a pick can be but always tried to keep it equally as simple. To really get this lick one needs as close to his distortion as well. Another GREAT example of this are the two breaks he does on 'Joy Of Repetition' from One Night Alone, (please give it a listen if you haven't already). There are two versions of that floating around, the first one is the raw version that he played that night, (with video) which he clearly is using just a few notes played incredibly FAST. Even though he may have 'cleaned' it up for the album, it still sounds as though there are only two to three notes played fast enough that the cycling of Effects do the rest of the work.
