This is defo for guitar players that are beginners in learning Prince’s style and secret licks and I’m going to use this as my springboard into becoming a better player! Great video dude! 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
That's very cool. I'm going to use this thanks! It's just semantics but the way I would think of that scale is Dorian with the added major 3rd as a passing tone.
Great work Brandon Boerner and I agree with you in that there is not much information on this out there (at least in RUclips world). Great lesson in every sense. I'm off to practice... Cheers.
Good job buddy yeah you're right on it sounds just like Prince all you need to do is put a little Funk behind it and there you have it good job man I love it. Mogul....
Brandon, first, great tutorial! It's spot on for those runs he'd go on. Excellent work and thank you! Second, what's your guitar tone made of in this video? It's so perfect to my ears!
Hey Jay, the amp here is really an old Peavey practice amp I used to have. It was a cheap solid state modeling amp. I probably had it EQed with a lot of bass, boosted mids and low treble The guitar is a Richie Kotzen Sig telecaster. Great sounding guitar
Hey I know I’m late but I’m pretty sure it’s dorian with an extra M3, so in E you’re playing E, F#, G, (G#), A, B, C#, D, E A tab would look like: e----------9-10-12- B-------10-12----- G-9-11-12-13-------- D-------------12-14 A------(11)-12-14-16--- E-12-14-15-(16)--------
True... he did sometimes use his pinky. He uses his pinky during the the fast part from Anne Stesia off of one nite alone. A lot of his wide intervallic chops do not involve his pinky though. Not that he couldn’t use it ...
@@petsnowflake Well a lot of players opt to use pinky less cause it's the weakest finger.Prince uses pinky more than most of rock guitar players, much more than Tim Pierce who use only 3 and Clapton.both Pierce and Clapton are good players but when u watch theor hands it looks like they play with broken hand.lol. What is your opinion on Prince's solo here : ruclips.net/video/Gfwft3ge4hQ/видео.html
As a beginner, I couldn't understand much of what you were talking about. You play way too fast. I like when teachers break down fret positions. And you didn't do that. So I didnt learn much from watching your video Sorry but I feel that you aren't a great teacher for beginners.
If you are a beginner and want to play like Prince RIGHT NOW, without learning notes and all that stuff, you should just get a Dunlop Prince pedal, it does all this stuff for you. Make sure you get the one with the speed knob on it.
This is just a dude sharing some knowledge man. Prince is not for beginners. This is super helpful to me and I've been playing for over 20 years. Sometimes guitar players get stale and some different flavored notes is all you need to open up a door of new stuff. Cool video man.
This is a great example of how/why non-guitarists believe Prince was one of the all-time great guitarists....he wasn't! He relied on this BS and over-use of effects to create the false impression that he was amazing. Slow that riff right down and you have _zero_ melodic content. This shit is _all_ he does. Sticks around the high notes and bends the hell out of them with all kinds of FX going. His sheeple constantly compare him with Hendrix...give me a fecking break 👎 Great demo though 👍😎 In 3.5 minutes, you created a complete Prince guitar tutorial 😂😂😂😂
If you think you can define prince's musical career off of a single scale you're dead wrong. He had to challenge the boundaries of contemporary music to be defined as a genius in his own eyes. "Make the rules, then break them all cuz you are the best, yes you are....cream"
Decades of skill dissected in one short video! 👍👍👍

This video is super helpful and insightful, I don't see many video's that break down parts of his style. thanks
I've seen a lot of these concepts used in early Zeppelin solos too. It's interesting seeing similarities in such different styles
Very nice...! And, Prince was an extraordinary guitar player...!
RIP Prince...
Thanks for posting!

That's very cool. I'm going to use this thanks! It's just semantics but the way I would think of that scale is Dorian with the added major 3rd as a passing tone.
Agreed, although I'd add the major 7 as a passing tone as well.
Wow. Thanks for breaking it down like that. You’ve got some serious chops!

can you please do a tutorial of why yoiu wanna treat me so bad by prince..the guitar solo is epic but other people do it to fast u would be perfect
That's crazy... nice job
Great video!

Eddie Van Halen did a lot of passing tone implementation in his solos as well, in pentatonic runs...
Yeah he did now that you mention it. Lots of chromatically when he would tap
On a Kotzen tele! Sweet
Brandon you are BOOMING
that's dead on! fucking cool!
very helpful!
Noice - thanks man
Great vid! Is that a Ritchie kotzen tele??
could you please slow that down and give me the exact scale......
Hey I know I’m late but I’m pretty sure it’s dorian with an extra M3, so in E you’re playing E, F#, G, (G#), A, B, C#, D, E
A tab would look like:
e----------9-10-12-
B-------10-12-----
G-9-11-12-13--------
D-------------12-14
A------(11)-12-14-16---
E-12-14-15-(16)--------
I believe that is called Minnetonkan scale.
u got 1 thing wrong.Prince did use pinky when doing fast runs. check Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad solo as example

Sounds very Bensony to me. I dig it!
@@petsnowflake yap and he plays it on Ibaznez that Benson gave him
hey man this is fucking insane...i cant tell..are u doing alternate picking or are you only picking each string once with a down stroke
Sir...if you are going to teach...take the fuzz off, slow down, and say the notes you are playing!!
Any tabs or name of scales? Please, Thanks!
mixolydian is typically the purple sound
❤
So was the scale purple rain solo was played in sir?
Mostly major pentatonic/ major scale, mixed in with some minor pentatonic

Latest model has 60 new patch presets programmed by Prince plus 12 each from Lisa & Wendy. Fuck learning notes.
