- Here in our A320 simulator we demonstrate the actions and typical calls for a TCAS Traffic Advisory (TA) followed by a TCAS Resolution Advisory (RA).
Interesting Stuff / Further Reading:
Our simulator can also be configured for TCAS flight guidance (AP/FD TCAS mode aka auto TCAS). This will be the subject of a further vdieo.
Trivia:
There are 14 different TCAS messages associated with TA/RA detection.

If you operate in “ full circle mode “ on the nav display you can “see” aircraft on final. Think Austin Tx SWA/FEX.
It is SCARY sounding
Good. It should be. It's telling you to act NOW to avoid crashing into another plane.

Such an uncommon alarm and yet such a commanding presence
I was only a trainee when I heard that. It was a strange day. I was in DA-40 and saw a black dot in the sky when this happened. We were at the base leg of our circuit flight. TCAS told me there was a traffic at 12 o'clock high, same altitude. Told me to climb. But we were the only aircraft in the vicinity and it was confirmed by the controller as well. Idk what happened. But that black dot disappeared when everything turned back normal.
very spooky indeed. glad to hear everything turned out fine at least
ADSB ghosting
I was flying a A320 in MSFS, and TCAS automatically climb to resolve the conflict. Does it happen in real life?
Yes, depending on the modification state of the aircraft, it can carry out a TCAS manouver automatically - see our video Auto vs Standard TCAS. Also our simulator can be configured either way as the customer sees fit!
@@manchesterflightsimcentre i dont thinks so thats what CAT A and B EASA they teach us
@@manchesterflightsimcentrewhat happens if 4 planes are going to crash
How does TCAS handle that ?
There might not be enough space or time to put all 4 at different flight levels
I think TCAS should be updated with bank angles as well
This way you can split the 4 planes onto 2 groups with each group at a different flight level
Then get the planes to also bank so even though the planes are at the same flight level they will miss eachother
@@mortgageapprovals8933 I'm sure the pilots or the automated TCAS response can just increase the aircraft's rate of climb or descent
@@mortgageapprovals8933the odds of 4 planes colliding in air is less than 1 in 1 billion years
there not much time to react. why doesnt it warn earlier
Because you would get a lot of false alarms near busier airports.
time has been considered to be sufficient for reaction, and congested airspace will be a nightmare if too many jets in the TCAS page
Tcas is telling the other aircraft to descend, so it should be enough time to react after all
When a warning is issued, both planes receive opposite commands. If the pilots listen to their commands, the TCAS WILL prevent the disaster.
You've no idea how helpful TCAS has been for how long it's been around
