This is a great solution for me since I’m a professional musician who uses iPad in Portrait to read sheet music and my home computer is a Mac Mini for Logic and MuseScore. This would let me use my iPad as my Mac Mini monitor when I’m teaching lessons outside of my home and need to use programs that aren’t on iOS.
@@Avsodvxizg167 directly? as in ....set it up once, using you main monitor, and from then on ... just opening the mini, opening the iPad and simply the picture will appear?

Actually this how I Mac compute and I love it. I use my iPad Pro as the main and only display for my headless M1 Mac mini with wireless sidecar via VNC. I wish Apple made this an easier out of the box connection. For example, a simple solution would be in Mission Control on the iPad Pro, I should be able to tap Screen Mirroring and “PULL” the Mac mini “screen” to my iPad if it’s on the same iCloud account and network. To start using my current setup, first I had to connect my Mac mini to my HDMI TV since I don’t have a monitor and I had to connect a mouse and a keyboard, but once set up to do all the necessary setup, I no longer need the mouse, keyboard or display to operate my Mac. I just launch VNC on my iPad Pro, type in my password and my Mac mini display shows up on my iPad and I can do all my my computing I need to. Luckily i don’t need to do anything pro and require fine touch point editing, the Mac is better at batch processing and batch editing like adding tags in the photo app and file management. Also, some BitTorrent archiving and backing-up to my personal iCloud. I wouldn’t mind if to get MacOS on the iPad Pro, Apple choose this route, wired or wireless as A Main use case instead of only as an alternate use case as it is now. Give us faster 1:1 response time. When connected, the Mac OS and the iPadOS merge into one cohesive experience instead of a mirroring experience, doubling the processing while exchanging data, in a synchronize experience. I’m sure this is hard to do because a risk of data loss for unexpected Disconnection either wire or Wireless. But I’m sure Apple can make it a great user experience and they will get the sale of a Mac computer like the Mac mini or the Mac studio or whatever and the sale of iPad Pro for people who want to compute this way. An individual Mac experience as it is now, an individual iPadOS experience as it is now, and a new unique combine computing experience for those who want macOS on iPad Pro hardware. I’ve suggested this use case in Apple feedback for years, but it seems to be falling in deaf ears, so I guess the more people who request this type of computing experience of a combine macOS and iPad hardware experience would have to file their own feedback suggestion also. My Mac mini is pretty much in one location at home because it connected to multiple external hard drives but I can use my iPad Pro wirelessly to Mac computer. But I like your solutions with the HDMI connection dongle, the wireless mouse and the Bluetooth keyboard. Whenever I get a new Mac mini with more internal hard drive space I’ll be able to eliminate the external hard drives and I will have more flexibility of a portable Mac mini all self-contained that I can physically connect to my iPad Pro and I have even greater best of both worlds of macOS and iPadOS and portability.
TY! Your solution is great for when a monitor fails (or gets fiddly) and you need backup. But it’s even better for headless Mac Mini (or Studio) setup and maintenance. Furthermore, this is great to make Mac Mini/Studio travel-worthy… without some (huge or fiddly mini) monitor. I already have an iPad so using it makes all the sense in the world, and reduces extra gear (like buying/carrying a monitor just to get a headless computer running). Thank you!

AstroPad is a wireless device that plugs into a USB-C port on my mini and it works great. You first load a free app on the mini, open it, open the app on your iPad and it automatically detects it and done! I just got it last week to turn my 2017 iMac into a primary screen for the mini when I’m at home. So with one tiny device I saved my beautiful 27” screen from oblivion and have both an iPad AND a MacOS screen for the mini. Mac Continuity automatically shares the keyboard and mouse across devices also without wires. $79 one time price and no subscriptions. Very cost effective and efficient powerhouse flexible system! 😊🎉

So I have been researching this very thing and have seen several methods to do this from several RUclips channels. I am interested as well because I do photo editing and use Lightroom and Photoshop frequently. I needed some more on the go however I did try this as described in this video and what I found is that I would lose signal, and my screen would look like the old TVs where you can adjust the verticals in a horizontals, it was out of adjustment and couldn’t figure out how to fix it. I looked at two other options, the first I found that there was a severe lag time from operating my mouse or keyboard to the output device. The second was a Pay software and I didn’t think $80 was worth it. The last option I tried is to use the proprietary Mac software for screen sharing, which works very well however, the full desktop version of Lightroom or Photoshop requires a lot of screen area to control the different options available.

some older ipads do not have a setting to never go to sleep. My 9.7 max stay awake if no activity is 30 minutes. Annoying to the point, I would not want to use it.
Just so you’re all aware, using an iPad you can only get a refresh rate of 60 Hz. So if you want to get 90 or 120 frames per second with an iPad Pro, it’s not possible. The reason is because you need to use a video capture card like he does in the video and currently video capture cards only support up to 60 frames per second. so yes this is all great, but personally I want to be able to utilise the 120 frames capable of my Mac mini. Other than that good video.
It depends on the keyboard - if it’s Bluetooth then yes. There are even some keyboards that can pair to multiple devices, so you could pair with the iPad AND the Mac Mini and switch between them. I have one somewhere and will test this - great idea!
It's a bit unfortunate, that you can obviously not use the Magic Keyboard and Trackpad. That would remove the necessity for the external devices. Maybe there is an App which makes this possibles?
Hey nice. Two questions - First can we run literally any program of mac studio that show up in ipad ? Second Will ipad works as main screen using this app with mac studio as well ?
Does it charge the iPad as you use it? or does it rain the battery? what accessories can you use to have the iPad connected as your screen and charge at the same time
Why can't you set the Mac to auto login on startup and use Sidecar directly to your iPad? Then all the inputs on the iPad would work to control the Mac. Sidecar can be set to either extend (a second display) or mirror and be the primary display.
That’s an option that does require some additional configuration, but would potentially work. In this video, the only requirement is a cable and free software on the iPad - making it easy to both setup and troubleshoot. If you use the auto start sidecar option there are potential challenges should the mini not start correctly.
Hi, superb! I don’t know this can be done. But why can’t you use the iPod keyboard and trackpad with Continuity feature as the mac keyboard? They are on the same wifi and Apple id right?
I haven’t found one … yet! 😀 The thing is to check the compatibility of the software with your model of iPad as well. CAMO Studio doesn’t work with every iPad

@@EVP-Voices it’s a good question - the reason is that the direction of signal has to be IN if you want the iPad to act as a monitor. If you want the iPad to act as a SOURCE then you would use the OUT cable. Here we are doing the opposite- using the iPad as the Destination
Great video and great concept! One question: Do you use Camo Studio rather than using Apple Sidecar because it is better or (perhaps) because your iPad doesn't support Sidecar? Thank you!
Good question! Sidecar is when you want to use your iPad as a second monitor. In this set up, I want to use my iPad as the main (and only) monitor. So that’s how CAMO Studio helps.

Are you using the HDMI Capture cable? The output cable won’t work - you need the Capture one (which isn’t very expensive I put a link in the description)
i dont know if the question is dumb, but if i connect my ipad via hdmi->usb c to my windows laptop, it should also work with camo studio as a second display, right? Great Video

Today I learned when EA's greed started. ”Lotus Turbo Challenge 2” was the first game I had for my Amiga 500 😊
Camo is not showing the capture card as an option ? Any help I have iPad Air 4th gen running iOS 17.3
same here, dont know what to do
I have an old gen1 iPad Air running iOS 12.5.7… cam studio won’t work on it… any suggestions for an alternative app?
Thank you for posting this, i was just wondering about this.
some older ipads do not have a setting to never go to sleep.
Love this idea. Is it possible to use an iPad keyboard such as a Logitech slim combo that works with my iPad?
It depends on the keyboard - if it’s Bluetooth then yes. There are even some keyboards that can pair to multiple devices, so you could pair with the iPad AND the Mac Mini and switch between them.
I have one somewhere and will test this - great idea!
Can you just use the magic keyboard connected to your iPad instead of having to use the extra keyboard and mouse ?
Did you ever find out because I am curious to know also
I use both Magic Keyboard and trackpad with my IPad…but you have to disconnect them from the mac, unfortunately
It's a bit unfortunate, that you can obviously not use the Magic Keyboard and Trackpad. That would remove the necessity for the external devices. Maybe there is an App which makes this possibles?
i wonder if you can use wired keyboard and mouse on the Mac's screen?
Hey nice. Two questions -
First can we run literally any program of mac studio that show up in ipad ?
Second
Will ipad works as main screen using this app with mac studio as well ?
Yes and yes!
Will there be lag in using it ?
@@Shreshya.stuart I haven’t tested games, but everything I’ve used has worked well
Thanis
Does it charge the iPad as you use it? or does it rain the battery? what accessories can you use to have the iPad connected as your screen and charge at the same time
I was wondering the same thing. Is the fix as simple as just connecting with a USB-C to USB-C cable?
Soo neat! it works and works well thank you :)
Awesome 😎
Actually this should work
Very cool. I have an iPad with lightning connector. Is there a hdmi-to-lightning adapter that can be used rather than the USB? Thanks so much. 🎵
I haven’t found one … yet! 😀
The thing is to check the compatibility of the software with your model of iPad as well. CAMO Studio doesn’t work with every iPad
Thanks!
@@jbackes wow! Thank you very much! That’s very nice of you.
Do you recommend powerbanks if there are no wall/power outlet nearby
Such a great video! Question.. does it HAVE to be a capture card? Could I simply use a usb c to hdmi cable with camo ? How about latency? Any issues ?
@@techmap4191 it does need to be the capture card - it requires the INPUT direction. Fortunately, they are reasonably priced - I linked to one below.
Can you change the Mac’s aspect ratio to fill the iPad screen with no black bars?
This is a very good solution, and it has helped me a lot. However, I still want to ask if there is a way to solve the current top and bottom black bars in the Como studio?
I haven’t been able to get those gone - yet. I’m trying to figure out a way by changing the display properties on the Mini.
@@LearningandTechnology thanks for help !
i'm using a nextech keyboard with trackpad and tv, and hope to use ipad when i dont want to use the tv and keyboard. not for taking it outside of home, just want to use the mac mini not on a desk. i'll be using the mac mini mostly as our iphones backup/transfer for photos. dont want icloud plans and accidental transfers of videos/photos over mobile network. i dont work cables though..the mac mini will sit on some furniture, and i use it from my bed etc.
BIG question: can you have 2 ipads as monitors instead of 1?
@@otdosa hmmmm. I don’t “think” so, but I’m wondering…
It’s not something I’ve done. The challenge would be in the software recognition of two monitors. I’m thinking it’s not possible.
@@LearningandTechnology ok. Let's see maybe this gets done in a while.
For some work 2 displays really make a difference.
Thanks Tim Cooky
@@eddyNYC oh how I wish that was true. I’d be happy with 10% of his wealth 😀
it would be so fuckin dope if it had iPad Pro Magic Keyboard support
Apologies if this is a stupid question, but why can't you just use a HDMI>USBc cable? Thank you :)
@@EVP-Voices it’s a good question - the reason is that the direction of signal has to be IN if you want the iPad to act as a monitor. If you want the iPad to act as a SOURCE then you would use the OUT cable.
Here we are doing the opposite- using the iPad as the Destination
@@LearningandTechnology ah thank you, understood! Cables ordered 😊
Great video! wow i am now the 1000 like... incredible!
Magic Keyboard work with mac mini ?
Do you mean the iPad one? No.
@@LearningandTechnology yes with ipad one , thank you
@@i3bady9 ah… sadly not. It would be nice. I just use the tiny folding one - it’s okay.
Capture Card is not an option under devices....
@@MattEldridgeFilm do you have the capture card for INPUT? This is a special cable (link in description). HDMI OUT will not work.
Can we use the keyboard that’s connected to ipad to control the mac mini? That would make it a real mac book killer.
That would be awesome indeed - but the Magic Keyboard does not have this magic :)
A Bluetooth keyboard is the way to go this this setup.
@@LearningandTechnology Thank you!
It seems like a very good solution to me, I bought a cable on one end that has USB C and the other HDMI to connect to a mini Mac, but it doesn't give me an option, after I chose "external video", no device show up.
The cable you need is the one I link to in the description (it’s not expensive) - it has for input rather than output.
I'm not that tech savvy but do we have a way to use an iPad as a remote desktop to Mac Mini
For this - I use Parallels software that allows me to use “Parallels Access” - this is remote control software that runs on my Mac Mini -
With and App on my iPad to connect remotely.
@@LearningandTechnology thank you!
Does it work with basic ipad or just ipad pro? The title just says Ipad but you say youre using an ipad Pro which is a lot more expensive.
@@TomasGarza-b5d it works with regular iPads as well. If you check out CAMO Studio on the App Store it lists all of the models.
Does it work with windows and nice vid
@@niichan3291 it does - I did a video showing it with Windows as well. Basically the same setup.
I can not use this way, after connecting HDMI, there is not capture card in device option,
I connect Mac mini m2 to i pad pro 2022 , but doesn't work, please guide me to handle this situation
Are you using the HDMI Capture cable? The output cable won’t work - you need the Capture one (which isn’t very expensive I put a link in the description)
Thanks, yes I have a capture card that connects to the ipad then HDMI cable connects to it, but still doesn't work!!! Can you guide me?
@@LearningandTechnology please answer
@@respectandlove464 is it the capture card I linked to? What brand and model is it?
@@LearningandTechnology d-net hd usb 3 (Chinese)
i dont know if the question is dumb, but if i connect my ipad via hdmi->usb c to my windows laptop, it should also work with camo studio as a second display, right? Great Video
Not dumb at all!
It won’t work exactly like that - you need the input cable - so the one I link in the description. However, it can work and I’ll do a video on that for everyone
It works great!
I made a video for you
How to Use an iPad as a Second Windows Display
ruclips.net/video/S9XUrMydkuI/видео.html
Apple mini is a great little machine for editing videos. When the SSD drive breaks due to heavy use one can just replace it. Oh, wait ...........
True - the new Macs all have to go into Apple for repairs.
Sir the portable keyboard is not linked ; could you please reply with a link ; if you have suggestion how to use MacBook as a screen for the Mac mini please let me know the cable and software to use
Great Video and great idea (like always). Thanx and greetings from Germany. 👍
Thank YOU!
Do we need to do a first time configuration with the mac mini connected to a monitor first before we can use camo studio to connect the mac mini to the ipad ?
Nope! I used this video to connect my brand new Mac mini up to my iPad Pro and it worked instantly. I used the iPad to set up the Mac mini!
Hey hey ,, awesome well presented info,, was just wondering if
1. it’s possible to draw directly on the iPad screen , using the Apple Pencil
2. Also if softwares like toonboom can be installed on the Mac mini m2 and worked on ! Drawn etc on the iPad screen ( of course saved on Mac mini) that WOULD BE AWESOME …
Been thinking about this ..and walla I see your awesome video here 😊
Thanks for watching and commenting!
Sadly, the iPad in this scenario is strictly a one-way display. It doesn’t feed “back” to the Mac Mini.
@@LearningandTechnology appreciate timely reply sir, I had a feeling it wouldn’t work ..saved me from buying up stuff on impulse 😅,, installing toonboom on a regular laptop and working with a regular Wacom tab would do the job just fine for me just fine 🙏
@@storyboardman9459 if you have the Wacom tablet already then that’s a fantastic choice.
Without the apple Magic Keyboard can you use your iPad as a monitor and charge it at the same time ?
You would need an adapter that passes power through.
An M1 MacBook Air plus an iPad would mean you would have twice the screen real estate using sidecar and still have the benefits of a full OS. Yes the MacBook Air is more expensive than the Mac mini but not significantly so.
Except then you wouldn’t have an iPad
I got a cable that has HDMI on one end and USB C on the other and it didn't work 😪 Is it possible that it doesn't work because I don't have an adapter? I mean: should I have an end to end hdmi cable and this cable connect it to a usb c adapter?
It has to be an HDMI input adapter (link in description) it may be that you have an output adapter - which most of the ones are.
Hey, Frank - interesting video.
Is there anyway to use the iPad Magic Keyboard as the Mac MIni keyboard?
@@tomdearie5165 sadly not. The Magic Keyboard uses a connector to the iPad and not Bluetooth - so the Mac Mini can’t “see” it and connect
@@LearningandTechnology Thanks, Frank. That’s what I thought. 👍
I don't see the link of the HDMI adapter, I have one, but only get Crome to the ipad, with no audio, no desktop of the mac mini also no test pattern
Here’s the link amzn.to/4a0t2ru
This is an INPUT cable and is the one needed. Fortunately, they are not too expensive and have other uses to (I some other videos on connecting game systems for example)
Imagine iPad had a hdmi port with that iPad could turn into a any monitor not only just for a Mac mini
@@diegoomarguzmanaguilar8641 it can! This solution works with any inbound signal using the adapter I demo. I’ve used it for my Switch and Windows system too
@@LearningandTechnology what could be interesting tho is that if you could Make a Mac mini as slim as posible to have its procesor and all the components of a Mac mini inside an iPad if someone could made a ps 5 as slim as a penny i think this project is able to do it or just paste a touch screen on a Mac mini an some good power bank or battery and there we have a portable touchscreen Mac mini

Does the IPad touch screen works with the Mac or you have to use the mouse and keyboard? 🤔
Unfortunately not - it’s just a screen display

I haven't tried that - I'm not a Final Cut user - so I'm not quite sure about that :)
@@LearningandTechnology Okay, thank you. Is there any way to get the Magic Keyboard and Trackpad‘s inputs into the Mac? Than we would almost have the full macOS on iPad experience.
Can you KVM the iPad without keyboard and mouse to Mac Mini? I’d like to do that.
Can't the Mac Mini mirror to the iPad?
Is there an option to fill up the black bars on top & bottom and go full screen?
The full screen will maintain the aspect ratio of the Mac - don’t may be possible if you adjust the display settings in OSX. I haven’t tried this yet, but will check.
Now I just wish I can use my ipad keyboard and to control it.
Is it possible to use the ipad as a monitor while charging the ipad?
Can the touch screen on the iPad still be used to select apps on the Mac mini, or is a mouse still necessary?
You will still need a mouse - it only acts as a screen for showing what’s on the Mini.
There is a way around this if you use Parallels and Remote Control your mini - however, that’s a different process (and I do have a video on it as well 😀
Sadly you can't get camel studio in my country.
That's not great... hopefully CAMO Studio will be soon. I'm not sure what countries it's in at the moment.
Would it be possible to plug my iPhone 15 on my older iPad?
Will this work with a mac mini 2018?
How can installed softwares in MacMini interact with iPad's apps, e.g. sharing audio and documents?
Not through this method - this is just for display of the Mac Mini.
