Electro Harmonix Memory Boy

  • I've had several delays in Electro Harmonix' "memory" range, including the Deluxe Memory Boy, but for some reason I've never gotten around to trying the regular version. Until now!
This is such a versatile pedal! I had no idea it could do so much. Aside from the basic analogue delay (which sounds fantastic!), the modulation section in this pedal, along with the expression input, really open it up and expands the possibilities.
The modulation rate is changed via the right-hand mini toggle switch, while the depth gets its own knob. You also get a choice of two waveforms - triangle and square - using the left toggle switch.
The Memory Boy is extremely musical. It focuses on the basics, and is very tame and easy to use. However, if you're also looking for some weirder sounds, it can definitely deliver! Especially when you plug in an expression pedal, and crank the feedback to get some self-oscillation going on the repeats.
The Deluxe version is still vastly superior, with the additional tap tempo, subdivisions, tone adjustment, and effects loop. But its younger brother can still hold its own, all these years later.

This i like. The weird and unsusal is neat to see, but here is something I can relate to. Great choice!

      Thanks!
Yeah, it's nice to have a simple delay as a pallete cleanser, in-between all the glitchy, granular weirdness I usually feature! 😄

Looks like it’s capable of Thermae style pitch stuff in square wave mode. Nice.

This may be of some interest (or not):
The recently discontinued, if easily sourced and nicely priced between $85.00 - $100.00 (depending) Hotone EKO series has a Memory Man/Boy algorithm (+16 others) that sounds pretty close to the EHX models (modulation included) in stereo and with up to 4000 ms of delay time on a 200 milliamp draw.
While lacking wave-switching (I think), still a really versatile and very good sound for the price.
    That's all.
    -Cheers!

Oooh, great info! Cheers for the heads up. I'll definitely check that one out! 👍

awesome pedal :) i don't have a lot in my collection but i got two of these

I bought mine used. Love it, but I thought it may have been a little tweaked. If I have the feedback knob above 9 o clock it starts instantly going crazy, I have to have it pretty low - maybe it’s just my set up

Ah yeah, no, that doesn't sound right at all. Fortunately, you can buy them pretty cheap these days, so I would buy another one to compare it with the first. Then, if it's definitely broken, I'd sell it spares/repairs for like £25.

    Top demoing!
    One question:
Is it REALLY good at doing slapback delay?
    Thanks in advance!!!

      Thanks a lot! 😊
I'm not much of a "slapback player" tbh, so I'm probably not the one to ask. However, in my opinion, yes it's fantastic at those shorter delay times. Most analogue delays lend themselves very well to slapback, to be honest.
      Hope that helps!

      @@PedalExperiments my thoughts (assumptions) exactly!
      It surely helped!
      Thank you A LOT!!!
(plus you responded with actually NO delay, much much appreciated!!!)
      Stay blessed and creative!!!

If you've got a fully functional model it'll do a good slap back with a good amount of adjustment at that setting.

I have one but im like, pretty sure something is not correct with the modulation part of the circuit ...kinda sounds really weird.. so i almost never use it ..the delay functions work well but just man as soon as i dial in the chorus it sounds...wrong? N i love chorus so much too 😢😂

It's a great pedal. I'm not sure about the regular MB, but the Deluxe version has internal trimpots for the biasing and modulation. If the MB has a similar set of internal controls, maybe they've been messed with?

@PedalExperiments iv been thinking about opening it up n having. A look...I'm not a techy but maybe I can start there lol
