This is a classic that never really becomes dated for it's unique EQ, and more subtle, practical features, including some of the expression modes. Also a good way to add some warmth and mojo back after going thru digital effects.I was initially overwhelmed, and certainly impressed, by the amount of sheer ambience this can provide .
I believe our guitar player is addicted to this pedal. Sounds great for a lot of different styles. From slapbacks to ping pongs and psychedelic craziness!
@TheFuzzB That's a tough call. The DL4 has a few more features like loop recording, custom presets and reverse delay but it is digital, where the Memory Boy is analog.
@frodobaggins2012 - Though that would be a great extra feature, only a designated expression pedal will work into the exp. pedal input. The tap tempo switch on the pedal itself works flawlessly but I understand if it is a location issue regarding access to the switch.
@TheFuzzB dont know if its too late.. but i have a dl4 and like it, but sometimes it glitches out, mostly when looping, which is a common thing with those units apparently. it has more variety then a deluxe memory boy, but i think im going to try to replace it with the deluxe memory man with hazari.
The DL4 has an "analog echo with modulation" setting with is based on the Electro-Harmonix Deluxe memory Man so it would sound and react slightly similar to this. I just made the decision to get the DL4 instead of this myself for the live functionality.
@TheFuzzB I own a DL4, If you're looking for sound quality go with the memory boy, if you're looking for features, diversity and presets go with the DL4.
@TheFuzzB I think the DL4 does some pretty nice sounding fake analog sounds. If you have the room on your pedalboard I would go with the DL4 over this, just for more options and to have presets.
Very nice. I heard talk of "dark" repeats. These don't don't sound any darker than any other usable analog delay. I already have a TC Electronic Nova Repeater that can sound pristine. The warmth of the delay and crazy oscillation is something that I want in my arsenal. I might have to look into getting one soon. ;)
I would ask the same question!!! I prefer the analog repeats on the dmb, i reckon the general tonality is better for the analog LoFi organic thing. also the facility to control feedback via exp pedal and the loop are nice additions and I can really see Myself using them . But. ...... The tce FB has some tasty toneprints and is a lot more pedal board friendly and I'd wager that the build and longevity is vastly superior (but that is entirely supposition and speculation on my part) Difficult
Besides the ext. foot switch and the delay time, why is the memory man deluxe so much more expensive than this, what am I missing out on by buying this?
@TheFuzzB If you need different kind of delay sounds (like reverse, analog, digital, tape etc.) or more delay time (like if you need over one second of delay time) then Line 6 would be better choice. But you must remember: It's a delay modeler. It models pedals that already exist so it won't sound as natural as the pedals it's trying to be. (It includes many pedals in one pedal like all modelers.) If you only need an analog delay, then don't buy a modeler, buy the real thing!
My dmb only self oscillates with the feedback past 3 o'clock? Everyone else's seem to do it at about 12? Also if I don't play anything and put the feedback at full it won't oscillate until I play a note? Is this normal or isotope broken?
I'm a little confused when it comes to expression pedals. Would someone mind telling me if you need specific types/brands/models of expression for specific pedals, or whether an expression pedal in general can work for most effects peds' like this one?
i know this is ten years late but just in case anyone is reading this comment wondering the same, any expression pedal with a TRS type cable (looks like a 1/4") should work.
I own a Memory Boy (not deluxe) and the Line 6 DL4 and a Boss DD-7. As far as sound, I would rate them (1) MemBoy, (2) DL4, (3) DD-7. The MemBoy is far warmer and expands the sound, where the DL4 is a little brighter and expansive, and the DD-7 sounds like you are playing in a fishbowl. As far as versatility (how many sounds can you get) I rate them (1) DL4, (2) DD-7, (3) MemBoy. MemBoy modulations are more for crazy sounds; the Deluxe model takes care of limited delay time of the old MemBoy.
That first subdivision looks like a dotted 8th to me. It would work if you selected it *then* tapped quarter notes, not the other way around. I think...
Hi! i just got this pedal recently and after 4 days the feedback knob stopped working it doesn't affect the repeating times anymore. I also tried it with the original power supply but i still can't do endless feedbacks now. This was not the case when i got it! any similar experiences or things i can do? i would really appreciate a fast answer because otherwise ill send the pedal back!
already did this and they send me a new one but now i am afraid of using any other power supply because it might break! should i only use the original one or can use any other supply as well?
Wouldn't recommend it for that, in particular. You should take a look at digital delays with displays showing the exact delay time, as Run Like Hell in particular, requires a semi-perfectionist approach to the delay time.
It might work. Check the specs on the EHX site or email them. If not, you can always use an EbTech level shifter. I use on for my Soldano which has an Line Lvl FX loop ;) so now I can run stompboxes with it.
well a year after i commented on this video, and you think you're being really witty by commenting something like that, i have this pedal on my board...
+Carsten Neugebauer that's one review out of a thousand. I had one of these, sold it a few months ago, and miss it plenty. If you want a Ehx memory toy/boy/man feel without spending a crap load of money, this is your guy.
I sad horrible because it changes the sound too much to me: too much modulating, the sound was quite innatural. That's just my opinion, everyone has his own ears.
+cabinfever111 fair enough :) i've gotten myself a flashback x4 in the meantime, which does exactly what i need it to do, yet i still think the memory boy would have been cool as well. i guess some people actually prefer the heavier coloration of the sound. to each his own, ey? :)
+Carsten Neugebauer yes i agree with you about the coloration of sound, i don't like it so much but yes, today a lot of guitarists prefer a "more effected" delay :)

Sold my carbon copy for this.,
Was worried I would miss the CC but this pedal is so much "more".
Same here and I love do crazy stuff with the square wave

Blend all the up
Gain at 12 o clock
Everything else at zero
Lo-fi effect
Brilliant demo. Thank you.
great demo!
Great, great video! Thank you :)
I've got one of these and I love it.
Mars Volta Deloused~ transitions at 4:22...
Tira Me Alas Aranas

Excellent Demo

@wally vonzipper no. Any expression pedal will work. I use earnie ball volume pedal Jr's. as my expression pedals.
Awesome demo!
Really good demo, you showed it all!
4:28 Now, that's pretty cool!
Can you make infinite oscillations just by holding down the "tap" switch like you do on the Memory Man Deluxe?
Somebody really needs to stack sereval DMBs on top of each other with their send/return.
@TheFuzzB I think the DL4 does some pretty nice sounding fake analog sounds. If you have the room on your pedalboard I would go with the DL4 over this, just for more options and to have presets.

ME TOO!!! i'm choosing this one.
Love the commentary. "And you can spend hours being Jimmy Page."
does it say "listen to cookie galore" on the PCB???
I would ask the same question!!! I prefer the analog repeats on the dmb, i reckon the general tonality is better for the analog LoFi organic thing. also the facility to control feedback via exp pedal and the loop are nice additions and I can really see Myself using them .

Difficult
could you plug a tap switch into the expression pedal input and tap the tempo when its set on delay?
What “gain” knob does? It’s gain incoming signal or after fx?
Besides the ext. foot switch and the delay time, why is the memory man deluxe so much more expensive than this, what am I missing out on by buying this?
I'm stuck between this pedal and the Line 6 DL4 Modeler.
Which is better? I'm liking this one but the DL4 has more settings?
I'm still trying to figure out how to use this pedal the best way. It's a bit intimidating for me.
Love how the effects loop affects the delayed signal! WOWZA! I'm getting one of these. TODAY. ..from PedalGeek.. Not this place.

soooomebody! please help me? :) hanks! haha this pedal or the tc electronic flashback or nova delay? thank you very much.. would appreciate it

Nice review! Well done! Thx!
Can this do a reverse effect?
wendywolfman no
How am I supposed to know that i got it running in 90 bpm or in 100,120 etc.
The only way to adjust the tempo is by tap??
thnx guys! :)
whats the proper way to power the pedal off? unplug it?
In terms of pure delay sound, which is nicer, this or the current deluxe memory man?
when does he say that?
I own a Memory Boy (not deluxe) and the Line 6 DL4 and a Boss DD-7. As far as sound, I would rate them (1) MemBoy, (2) DL4, (3) DD-7. Hey, I love all your videos. Really fantastic demo's!! What's the background music playing through :39 to 1:15?
You seem to be using a different lower supply here to the one I got with my pedal. What is yours?
somebody tell me! this pedal or the tech 21 boost dla?
Black hole sun flavor mmmmm
How practical is when using this pedal?
That first subdivision looks like a dotted 8th to me. It would work if you selected it *then* tapped quarter notes, not the other way around. I think...
yep
Ha I actually went ahead and got a DD20 instead! I like it a lot!
So 10 years later, I'm finally ready to move on from this pedal. I hope it serves the next person as well as it did me but I'm upgrading.
What did you grow out of? Did it ever fart when you hit the Guitar hard or in the loop? That's why I ditched the 1100 TT

Erikskatethrash. Mine does that too! Anyone know why? Pay £130 for a pedal and the delays don't ring out. Nice one...
i wonder if i can use it with line input instead of high impedance...
It might work. Check the specs on the EHX site or email them. If not, you can always use an EbTech level shifter. I use on for my Soldano which has an Line Lvl FX loop ;) so now I can run stompboxes with it.
Nightingale1887 :))
Works for sure!!! I do it all the time with my synths through (it's little brother) the Memory Toy!
you would want 2 reamp boxes to convert the line signal to instrument level and then back
At 0:24 Look at the bottom right of the analog thing and you will see something that says "Listen to Cookie Galore"
Will the echoes continue to trail after you turn the pedal off?
Fred S no, completely cuts off
0:32 why is it doing this sound ?????
its a demo of a delay pedal......... any note will do
i really hate how he skipped the dotted eighths... that's the only thing i really wanted to hear...
This pedal any good for stuff like Pink Floyd's run like hell and another brick in the wall? That's really all I want one of these for...
Will Bowden very good for pink
Ted Mosby? Is that you?
Does it do ANYTHING musical?? I just want a easy delay pedal with tap tempo darnit...
@TheFuzzB : DL4 is easily broken. Me and my friends are having the same problem.
And for dotted 8ths?
This pedal does dotted eights, he just didn’t show them
does the blend go 100% wet?
VERY wet
thx MAN!
missing the most U2'ish/TheEdge dotted(.)8th note setting
You've just talked me out of wanting this pedal.
+Leo Barnard the dotted eight is there on the pedal. He just didn't talk about it.
Wish these sorts of bids had some more versatile playing... you know, for those of us who don't just play blues...
"you can spend hours being Jimmy Page" superLOL
did he mean hendrix? i think he did
you can spend hours being jimmy page perfect!
@jkim519 me too lol
5:19
well a year after i commented on this video, and you think you're being really witty by commenting something like that, i have this pedal on my board...
@5:48 it sounds like a Dalek dying.
true bypass?
Yes
5:17 man ;)
totally analogic??
Julian McIlrath Technically, no. It's all analog circuitry, but it's controlled with digital.
oh ok. you win. tell your mom i said hi.
@TheFuzzB dont waste your money on line 6 junk go analog you cant beat it
Parece un sapo la modulación.
Martin Tudela eso es lo bueno xD
Me compro un Ring Modulator para eso.
No. The memory boy is definetly digital. Analog delays are supposed to have BBD chips like the memory man but... that one just doesn't have one
eh, you're just trying to find the only thing that he didn't cover. ask your mom to take you to the guitar center, so you can try one out.
kinda rude... that's what i wanted to hear too.
horrible delay, sold after two days
+cabinfever111 why, exactly? what is it that makes this pedal so horrible? im curious, thining of getting one...
