I always loved Bernie. What a class act. At the end of one season he bought his lineman each a case of Dom Perignon. After the Byner fumble against Denver Kosar walked over to Byner (who was sitting alone) and put his arm around Byner. As if to say, this is not all on you. The guy played on a broken ankle. Tough. He had a sense of humor. He joked that his 40 yard dash could be recorded on a sun dial. This guy had almost no agility but found clever ways to win and always had amazing accuracy.

One thing about Bernie, when he he cocked that ball to go deep you would leap to your feet because you knew someone was out there and the ball would be delivered on point. Miss those days.
First time watching Kosar. Never saw even a top quarterback throw so many accurate long passes which seem to float with a soft toss while Kosar had no chance to get set. Quite a talent!
I love BK. I wish the Browns would have been able to keep him from taking such a beating. He really sacrificed his body for the team and for the fans. Smart player with guts and heart. Humble guy. Always referred to himself simply as #19.

Unfortunately the Browns have never, in the SUPER BOWL ERA, been a great defensive team.... I think that has held them back from ever being AFC Champion's.

Kosar got it done ugly. Clunky herky jerky mechanics. Off balance, side arms etc...didn't matter. He had great timing, a strong arm, very good accuracy, and an incredible feel for the game.

In my memory, The Browns historically a running team, would destroy defenses with pounding runs from Mack and Byner, and with these crazy little dump passes over the middle, which drove defenses absolutely nuts. THEN, Bernie would fake that, and dump one of those deep balls (off of his back foot, or while back peddling) over the heads of the defense, who kept bunching up to stop those crazy Bernie Kosar dump passes over the middle. That's how I remember it. I want to see some video...
The biggest mistake Bill Bellicheck ever made was dumping Bernie way too early. He shouldn't have just been a high level backup, who maybe can start for an elite guy like Marino and Aikman when they got hurt. He was still playing well, there was no drop off as he implied the year he cut him, Bill missed that. He was still able to have multiple good years left with Cleveland and he had a wonderful career with winning to go with it, that most Brown's fans have missed ever since him and those teams of course 😭.

His last play for the Browns was him disregarding the play called on the sidelines and throwing a bomb for a touchdown. Belichick was so pissed he threw his headphones on the ground. Bernie was released that week. Too bad. The Browns were 5-1 and winning the division. They finished 7-9 for the year. Bernie got his Super Bowl ring that year with Dallas. That was a huge strength of Mary Schottenheimer, he let Bernie do his thing, and they made the playoffs in each of Bernie's first five years.

In my opinion, I blame the coaching more than I blame the talent around him... Marty proved himself to be a winning coach, but Bernie often butted heads with him in key situations. They had Webster Slaughter, Reggie Langhorne, Brian Brennan, Ozzie Newsome, and others on offense (including a solid O-line of Risien, Fike, Baab, Williams, and Farren). I think they definitely lost against Miami in '85 because of coaching, and they probably lost because of coaching on the drive against Denver in '86. Marty was a great coach and should not have been let go as soon as he was, but it does seem like he was a little too conservative with leads in the second half

There aren't a lot of people out there talking about the greatness of Webster Slaughter, Kevin Mack, and Reggie Langhorne... Those guys were great players (maybe they really are just underrated), but they aren't talked about nearly as much as Thurman Thomas, Andre Reed, OJ Anderson, Jerry Rice, or the Marks brothers. All of those guys surrounded the quarterbacks you mentioned.

I was in a small group talking with Dan Marino once in the mid 1990s. He said that Bernie Kosar was the most accurate long passer he had ever seen.
BK and Marino were good friends dating back to Bernie's college days at the U and Marino's early days with the Phins. Bernie was on the money.
