    I was given my 1st cowboy hat and although they shaped it in the store, I’m finding after a few days of wearing I want to reshape some areas. Thank you for showing how to do this at home!

    • @StartupCowboy

      I often find that it takes 2-3 times of shaping to get the desired look in your hat to settle and stay they correct way. That’s is why I like to keep a costumers hat for 24 hours to make sure the shape is correct and settles in nicely before I send it home.

    Fantastic tutorial! I received a nice Stetson Skyline 6X in chocolate a few months ago and absolutely love it, however, I think it’s too upright/taco’ish and want it reshaped to a more open, shovel squared front brim and have been afraid to try and do it myself. My gift was not cheap but I think this video might give me the confidence to try it! 🤙🏽

    Great in-depth tutorial, and great teaching demeanor. My problem is when the wind is high and facing into it, how to keep the front brim from flipping up, giving a "Corporal Agarn" effect (that reference really shows my age - LOL). I had purchased a hat stiffener online but all it did was leave a white residue on my black hat. I have more dark colored hats (black, sage, brown, tan) so this is not acceptable. Any suggestions? Also, how do you keep hats from color fading? The tan hat referenced originally was sage colored; I replaced it but do not want to have numerous tan hats when what I want sage! Again, any suggestions are appreciated.

      It is definitely difficult to maintain the color of a hat, no matter what color it starts as. Part of the aging process definitely discolors the hat.
      As much as you can try to keep your hat clean and out of the sun when you are not wearing it.
      As far as the stiffener is concerned, I have found that some commercial stiffeners do discolor hats, that is why in a lot of cases I will use Hairspray.
      Shellac is the other route to go. I personally have not used it. However, I know that is what they used to stiffen a hat in the first place, so I would assume that it would not discolor a hat as much as other products.
      Let me know if this helps!

      Mop and glow floor cleaner in a spray bottle works very well as a felt stiffener and leaves no residue or discoloration.

    Just got a new 4x felt hat. I like everything about it except for the hard crease in the brim. I much prefer a more rounded rise. First attempt at shaping the brim, the hard crease refused to soften. Not enough heat? Need to repeat working it? Thanks for the very clear video.

    • @StartupCowboy
      @StartupCowboy  Год назад +2

      That is definitely a tough situation. I find if you can’t get a hard crease out of a brim, after repeated attempts with a steamer, it may be time to completely iron the brim, flat, and start over.
      Sometimes those creases will only be fixed if the felt is super heated and pressed flat again.
      Hope this helps!

    • @StartupCowboy
      @StartupCowboy  Год назад +1

      Thanks for the question! If it’s done properly the first time, it should last for quite a while. That is also dependent on the quality of the hat. You may have to touch it up from time to time depending on the wear.

    Can you reshape an oblong opening in the felt hat into a circular opening? Can the hat be sized down by steaming it.

    • @StartupCowboy
      @StartupCowboy  2 года назад

      Clarc King,
      I personally haven’t tried this. Usually that shape is pressed in with a lot of heat and steam that would be hard to duplicate at home.
      As far as shrinking a hat, steam does work but you have to be careful when you size it down not to damage the hat.
      I will make a video showing how to shrink a hat at home here in the near future!

    have a collection of vintage hats to clean. Will a vaporizer be ok for steaming and how long?

    • @StartupCowboy
      @StartupCowboy  Год назад

      I’m not sure what a vaporizer is but usually as long as you can get a good steady and continuous line of steam that should work.
      As far as how long to steam it completely depends on the quality of hat and the temperature you can maintain from your steamer.
      My bet is that each hat would need 3-5 mins of time in and out of the steam to truly soften the felt so it can be cleaned properly.
      Hope this helps!

    I tried this a few years back using a different video as a guide. All went well but my hat went from dark green to a weird shade of brown. How can I prevent that?

    • @StartupCowboy
      @StartupCowboy  Год назад +1

      I honestly haven’t hear of this happening. All I can think is that the hat has been dehydrated by too much heat or the hat has lost some of its dye.
      To prevent this I would say use less heat. As far as the hat that changed color, you might have to consult a custom hat maker to see if the felt body could be dyed again.
      Let me know how it goes!
