Back in the 70s, they were interviewing a real cowboy, he lived on a ranch, wrangled for a living. The interviewer from 20/20 New York, had a fancy new hat on. He asked about how to properly break-in his cowboy hat, to make it look like the weather worn hat he was wearing. The cowboy grabbed the reporters hat dismounted the horse and threw it in a nearby creek. He then stomped it in the dirt and then handed it back and said now you start shaping it. Great visual watching the look of horror on the "dudes" face.

Jim, if I’m not mistaken that was a Kenny Rogers special about cowboys and I remember it well. I wish they would show it again but they had one scene where Kenny asked the cowboys what do they do for fun on a Saturday night and the cowboy told him, “we just go into town and beat up Indians”, that probably ended that show🤠

I know the feeling. I had a Resistol I bought in 1978 that was my daily wear. I later had 2 Stetsons and an American that I shuffled around. Then one day I came home after work and they had been stolen, I cried😢🤠
My first hat was a Justin 2x beater. I used it when I rode bulls and bucked mares in Mexican rodeo. I took care of that hat until the end when I fell on it jumping into a car through the window. I just recently bought a Stetson 4x and this one I’m gonna use for dancing and going out and depending on how I care for this one I’m gonna get a resistol in the future!
You don’t have to be a cowboy or American brotha, I’m Mexican American in America but not a cowboy at all however I’ve been hanging out with more of my Mexican friends lately and they all dress in cowboy boots and tejanas so I just recently bought one because I started liking them a lot and getting into learning about them.
Lil, Charmander the original original cowboys came from the conquistadors in Spain but the modern day western USA white cowboy actually comes from the vaqueros in Northern Mexico. I didn’t even learn that until I got older and I’m from America, I always thought the white American cowboy was an old wild Wild West thing that they created but it was all taken from the Mexican vaqueros, even the felt hats being made with beaver was taken from the native Americans who were here before the white Americans.
I have 2 40x Arena's, 1 in each offered color. Absolutley love the quality of them. Also have a chocolate George Straight 6x and one of their straws. That chocolate one has been through hell and still looks great! Drenching storms and all, touch up the shape and it still looks great! The quality and touch of the 40x is wonderful. The fur is just as smooth and nice as it can be and holds shape wonderfully, and the silk liner is gorgeous. So pleased. I always wore Stetsons since I was a kid. They were great quality back then. Still wear them sometimes (Have some of their Pure Open Roads I wear on special occasions). My main straw is an American, so I'm not a fanboy, just like Resistols for my felts the past 10 years.
I shaped many resistol felt and straw hats in my time of being a boot salesman and hat guy at Cavenders Western Wear in Denver. Learned some great things from the reps but I'm an American Hat kinda guy. Resistol has always put out great quality hats and stand by their products. I even wore them when working on my family ranch at home. I'd go back to resistol for a 20X Black Gold but my 60X American as done me good the passed 5 years. If resistol can convince me maybe I'll go back but until American Hat Company has me.
Mysterious Cowboy they are made by the same company. Basically they are almost the same. But both brands have the best quality hats of all cowboy hats.

I'm the fourth generation Resistol wearer. Loyal to the brand! I just shaped mine at home for the first time. I heated a big pot of water to a boil. Rest the hat a over the rim of the pot and put a towel over. Worked like a charm. Will be nice to be able to do it at home now

I shaped my old crushed rodeo resistol in the shower, same way Roy Rogers shaped all his hats. There’s a video on RUclips of Roy demonstrating how he did it.
Resistol is more like resist-all it's the best hat made. I've owned and worn the one I have now ( felt hat ) for over 10 years. Still holding it's shape perfectly.
I like Stetson, they have been the go-to for quality, and you KNOW you are getting your nickel's worth, and not getting scammed, like a good pair of boots or saddle.
After all the cowboy movies I've watched back in the day, they all had a more rounded front brim. It seems like all the guys in this video have a hard shovel front brim. Why? I think cowboy hats look much better with a slightly rounded front brim with no harsh corners.
Because the hard corner is the Rodeo ranch style that is so popular among many modern Cowboys. I like the flatter rounded brim too. Last Best West sells the type of hat ur looking for. Something involving Beaver. An old west hat was 100% beaver. They run round $600 or so. I wear a Gus style wool but have no problem with a bull riding cowboy hat or similar. Stetson wool....Resistol felt and straw...are far more affordable that one made from beaver.
I do like the styling of cowboys hats from the 1960s and before better. I think it is like cars, people today want a more aggressive look. The flat front brim combined with a vertical (rather than curving up) side brim is not subtle. I have a really nice special edition Open Road style Resistol hat from the Nebraska Centennial in 1967.

Resistol certainly is a quality product. However, I have Dee Pickett Stetson that has held up well in all kinds of weather. It’s not the only Cowboy hat I own, but it’s a good one! The Resistol I own does a good job too!
