I have been watching your videos for a while now and have learned so much about shaping felt and straw hats. Your instructions are easy to follow and I like how you define the process. I bought a new hat off of ebay and when it was delivered, I saw that the brim in the front had a sharp crease in it, probably from the box being thrown around. So I am going to try and work the crease out using your techniques. Thanks for your great videos.
Went to boot barn the other day. Was gonna get the rodeo king 25x open crown and shape it. I ended up getting the Bailey Dirk 10x . Probably gonna go back and get the rodeo king also.
This may be a stupid question, but should a new hat be symmetrical? I am on my second hat and both had very noticeable symmetry issues from front and back. 1st hat was a Stetson felt 30x "hand made" (more than likely defect hats they are rebranding as "hand made") and the second is a resistol George Straight 10x straw. I have worn hats in the past and don't recall these issues.
It’s best to use steam because it helps regulate the amount of heat that is put on the hat. I think with a heat gun, you would have to be very careful to not melt the coating on the hat.
Im guessing you guys in the western stores know only ONE way to shape ANY western hat ... Because you shape EVERY SINGLE HAT I've ever seen you touch the same way ...
I ordered a pre-owned hat on-line and unfortunately it was banged up pretty good in the shipping (no fault of the person who mailed it). I am going to have to completely re-do the shape of the brim. Can I lay the hat face down on a table and flatten the brim completely. Should I steam the brim first? What would you recommend as a solution to repair and reshaping the brim? The crown is actually in good shape so I won't need to repair that. Thank you for all of your straw and felt hat videos. I certainly have learned a lot. Hmmm; possibly an idea for another video!
Can a Stetson Open Road Shantung straw hat be shaped? I would like the lower the front & back brim. I understand that shantung straw is basically paper. Thanks
Yes, you sure can. There are some limitations, however because the original crease will show through depending on the style of crown you choose. I typically recommend people just customize or augment the original shape that is in the hat, whether that be adding cutter bumps or doing a full punch out, etc. Thank you for the question, holler if you have anymore questions or need help deciding on what to do with your!
Just started working for a small local hat shop and I’m essentially teaching myself hat shaping… This video is so so helpful, thank you!!!

Great hat you’re wearing
Is the steam needed or can you use a heat gun?

I usually spray them with starch. Hair spray also works well.
@@StartupCowboy I always been using glue. I'm gonna try starch, per your advice. Thank you.

This is an American silver belly, 7X

Mine is a minnick crown with a extra wide corners, extra low sides. The back is brought up just slightly.
