Thank you for posting this extremely helpfull video. It was a real pleasure watching you work the hat. I am planning to do precisely what you did with a cattleman palm charlie 1 horse hat. I like the gus crease myself. Thank you again, subscribed.
Great video. I really enjoyed watching you shape that hat. I’m a huge fan of Lonesome Dove, and as a Tennessean, you know I love Mr. Ambrose’s legendary Gus McCrae. Subscribed and liked, Sir.
I'm thinking of purchasing a palm leaf hat, but the shape isn't quite right. Seeing this you tube clip, I have confidence to reshape it now. Thank you!
Can or do you add starch to make it a little stiffer or wetting it and reshaping it bring back the firmness? I have an beautiful hat from 27 years ago that is still in wonderful condition but it's a little flimsy.
Very nice, exactly what I was looking for. Just a quick question, would you advise against doing this to a black palm leaf hat? Does the paint or dye will bleed? Many thanks
I got a speeding ticket coming down the hill into Norris one night, brings back memories! I'm glad you began by warning not to do this with a Shantung straw hat, I take it that requires steam?
There's a video on here that Cannard Hats put out that says to get food grade gelatin and dissolve about a teaspoon in a cup of water. Brush it on liberally and allow to air dry. Looked like it stiffened up quite nice.
GREAT VIDEO !! ONE of the best vids out there about re-shaping a Palm Leaf Cowboy Hat . ----- Question ; I have a Shantung Straw Cowboy . I want to just re-shape the brim . How would one re-shape shantung ?? Thanx !
No! This only works on palm leaf hats (Sunbody). You need a steamer, or tea pot to mess with a regular straw hat. They usually use laquer or schalac as the stiffening agent, and too much water will kill those hats. Use hot steam.
Don't leave it in the water so long. Just dip it in and pull it right back out. Enough water will stick to the hat to shape it. After dipping it, it will take a couple of minutes for the water to soak in enough for the hat to be pliable.
He is a real hat shaper, and for the palm leaf, they all use a tub of water, and dunk the hat in (or river or lake). This isn't a straw hat. Don't try this with your resistal, or summer straw cowboy hat - only palm leaf.
You did a great job on reshaping that palm leaf hat. Thanks for showing us how.
Thanks
I love to watch someone work their craft.
I do like the Gus crease but like the quigly brim and hat.

Great video. Thanks. Just ordered a Palm Leaf hat last week.
Awsome video! I got a Guss crease that neaded the brim to slope down just a bit. Thank's for sharing.
Larry, great video! the narrative, laid back talk while you went thru the steps was very nice
Just what I’m looking for the Gus style. Great job& video!👍
Great work. Would I be able to cut down the brim to a smaller brim size like 2 1/2 brim? Or will cutting it ruin the hat?

Just got me a sun body, liked it so much I bought a second one.
Nice job explaining what you're doing as you do it.
Thanks for the help! Gonna try it. Much appreciated.
Beautiful work..professional outcome

Can you stretch the fit of a palm leaf hat. Mine needs about 1/8-1/4 stretched out to fit correctly

my palm loves to take its original shape on the brim, any advice?
Great video. Now I can have a new hat every month
Where did you get that green water?
Very nice Job Larry!
Great video, my question is I have a palm leaf and was wondering how to stiffen up the brim? Over the 12 years it has gotten a little floppy....

Spray hairspray
Excellent job very helpful thank you very much
Before it was a Gus crease we called it a Mantana Rain crease.
Can you show me how to repair a Atwood Kenny Chesney cowboy hat I just need to reshape it
Love the Gus style.
I fish with mine. When I’m hot I give it a soak then wear it all the time. It just keeps getting better
I fished all day in the rain, now I know how reshape it… it got kind of floppy
Great instruction. How would you clean a dusty palm? Thx!
I vacuum mine

steam
Have you found something good to stiffen a palm leaf?
Did you use warm water?
Warm cold room temperature it dont matter
Will this work with Mexican palm?
Can you do this on a Jason aldean resistol?

Warm water or cold water
Jeffery Fran
cold water, or luke warm. They don't need to be soaked for long. Just dunk, and if a little stiff, dunk again.
I have an country music star Kenny Chesney Atwood cowboy hat anyways I just wanted to see if this can be done in a non deep working sink
Larry from Bootbarn how ya doin
Thanks for the help
Great video! Thanks for posting this, it's exactly what I was looking for. Is that a Sunbody Cattleman hat?
Not sure about the make, but I am 99% sure it is a SunBody.
Thanks for sharing!

Do mininick shape
How do you shape a shantung or bangora cowboy hat that is not palm straw?
Why are straw hat mostly stiff??
can this be done with hats that are made of thick palm tree leaves?
***** I would think so. On a really fine, high-end hat, I would probably use steam. But on a thick weave, I don't see why this method wouldn't work.
I’m in Shelby Montana hello
Good well explained video. Thanks
I left mine in the car and it shrank. Now I will do what u did
thanks for your tyme
great demo (Y)
How about setting up an Eric “Hoss” Cartwright hat.
