    Arcade stick player here. Fighting games are just so much fun playing with a stick compared to pad. I don't know why but throwing hadokens with a stick is much more fun then on a pad. I also get a lot of cramps in my thumb when using a pad. I could play on a stick for hours and never feel any pain. It's also awesome playing on stick since it makes me feel like I'm in the arcades again. That's just me though and it's all subjective.

  • @floral2970
    @floral2970 6 лет назад +14

    One thing I think is definitely worth mentioning is how durable a stick is. Sticks are about $200. Pads are $60 each. Sanwa buttons have an estimated 1 million press lifetime. Pad buttons? Last a lot less. 500,000 presses is what I have heard. Not to mention triggers sticking, d-pads breaking, and all that "good" stuff. I have broken 2 pads in a year. That's $120 right there, not to mention any potential failures in cables. ( I have used 3 $5 cables this year alone.) So that makes it $135 to use pad in my case.
    Buuuut on stick, your buttons and sticks last much longer, and your PCB can be easily replaced and upgraded for future consoles for around the price of a pad, not to mention how cheap buttons are ultimately (about $4 a piece per Sanwa buttons), and sticks including balltop and shaft are about $15-$20.
    Think about the future.

      Literally this. I played alot of analogue stick intensive games (NBA 2k games and Tekken 7) and I would go through 2 controllers a year (60 bucks each) due to analogue wear and tear which caused unwanted or delayed input. I got a fight stick last year for fighting games and not only is it holding up perfect but it's also inevertly increased the life of m console game pads. Highly recommend this investment.

    I grew up with arcades, and even then, for Street fighter, the arcade sticks had a massive learning curve for me. I was more comfortable on the GamePad for a long time. This coupled with the fact that arcade started to die out when I was a teenager. But the more I played any arcades, the more experience I got, and now I'm good with both. The only time I find it difficult to get used to is four more recent fighting games that are designed with the pad in mind, as opposed to an arcades stick, the sole exceptions being Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, Soul Caliber, and Tekken

    I personally prefer arcade stick myself. I love the button layout of a 6-to-8 button setup since it lets me easily hit all of the buttons with most of my fingers, which is especially useful for games like Tekken and Street Fighter. Plus the joystick feels more comfortable and it feels like it allows better range of motion. While a good d-pad is pretty damn accurate (in some cases, MORE accurate than a joystick) but sometimes I miss inputs on a d-pad and it makes my thumb pretty sore after a long play session. Plus even with a 6-button pad, hitting buttons can be a bit convoluted. Overall it comes down to preference.

    my main reason to play on sticks is because playing on arcade sticks allow me to play with a more familiar experience; the experiences I had & enjoyed at the arcades.
    Plus as long as you have a PCB compatible with various consoles, you don't need to switch to a different controller; in other words you don't have to adapt to a new controller. And yes customizing arcade sticks is a lot easier for me.

    started with pad and only switched to stick for durability. i probably changed 4-5 pads since the dreamcast and snes days and it always infuriated me when i couldn't just open the pad and change the parts. when sf4 came out, i just went out and got the TE stick. it never failed on me besides the hk button which needed a minor adjustment mainly due to years of use. and still to this day, i'm still using the same stick.

    I started playing on a pad and It was pretty ok. literally yesterday I got my 1st stick and It feels so much better for me, the movement is a little tricky but it's easier to land and execute the harder combos, and also you cant really mash it out so it makes you more precise :3

    I just started playing on stick, immediately noticed the improvement in control over input. In certain games I still get confused as to which button does what, but once you've got used to a stick, it's pretty clear that it does, in fact, offer a competitive advantage. You can play and practice for longer without injuring yourself too.

    You guys helped me finally decide on getting a fightstick and I LOVE IT😍. I grew up playing in the arcade and on consoles starting with Sega Master System and NES. I had the original NES Advantage and that thing was perfect to me. I am noticing there are a few moves, especially in 3D games, that I can do on a stick that I couldn't do with a pad. So I use either depending on the game. Also frame rate, if it's low, is harder with a stick for me playing old games. But the stick looks so damn cool sitting on your shelf next to your consoles.

    Sticks and buttons are cheap. Replacing all 9/10 buttons costs 15 bucks top. New sticks are 20-30 bucks. PCBs anywhere between 15-45 bucks depending on the type and brand. Customization/repair isn't as expensive as you make it sound. Also on the repairs, they're rare when you don't have the stock parts.

    Double fireball supers on 1P side is tough for me on stick. I can do them, but not at will when you know you can't afford a dropped combo.
    Pad is more on point if I'm not playing a 6 button game because I can't stand shoulder buttons in fighters.

  • @tzovlask
    @tzovlask 6 лет назад +1

    stick over pad. More accurate, the d-pad kills your thumbs. The only thing about the stick that needs the learning curve is the button placements, ie, knowing where x, or o is, the l buttons and r buttons etc. But when you get past that, you will be faster and more consistent than the game pad.

  • @TheRealDustinNunn

    Game pad controller or arcade stick? My answer is an arcade stick. An arcade stick has an advantage over regular game pad controllers which means no missed inputs. Game pad controllers can mess up your inputs because you have to keep going in to your fighting game's control configuration menus in order to rearrange you inputs nonstop. With arcade sticks, there is no need for configuring your controls in your fighting games options menus. Here are some examples:
    1. 1 vs 1 Tekken games rely on a joystick and four action buttons (Left punch, right punch, left kick and right kick).
    2. 2 vs 2 Tekken games (AKA the Tekken Tag Tournament series) rely on a joystick and 5 action buttons (Left punch, right punch, left kick, right kick and a tag-in-your-partner button).
    3. Sega and Tecmo/Team Ninja's fighting games such as Virtua Fighter, Dead or Alive, Sonic the Fighters, Fighting Vipers and so on rely on a joystick and three action buttons (Guard, Punch and Kick).
    4. The King of Fighters series rely on a joystick and four action buttons (Light punch, heavy punch, light kick and heavy kick).
    And 5. the Street Fighter series rely on a joystick and six action buttons (Light punch, medium punch, heavy punch, light kick, medium kick and heavy kick).

    For me personally, I use a pad. The reason for it is because I didn’t get interested in fighting games until just a few years ago, and none of the arcades I’ve been to in my town have had any fighting games. For these two reasons, there is almost 0 familiarity between myself and the stick, so while I haven’t actually tried to switch to one, I just feel like it wouldn’t end well for me. I played the game that got me into fighting games on a pad, and I’ve played on a pad ever since then.

  • @TV0R11

    i'd say sticks are way better when it comes to longevity, if something gets fucked on your pad you're gonna need a whole new pad or at least a junker pad thats not broken in the way yours is. with stick, dead button boom $2.50 new button drops in no problem. sticks can be a bit more pricy to fix but still not horrible and if the joystick has 4 separate wired up switches that aren't soldered to a joint pcb you may only have to buy a single replacement switch. and sticks are almost made to be popped open and worked on so repairs are easy. pads especially the newer and fancier they get the more of a fiddly hassle they are to work on.

    Genre of game matters the most as a PC player I accumulate peripherals. Flight sticks, pads, keyboards mice and fights sticks all have their strengths and weaknesses. A pad is as you said how most start and as it is designed to be a jack of all trades in is a master of none. The fight stick is the best for fighting, race wheel for racing, keyboard for fps and moba, flight stick for flight sim dogfighting and old school arcade trigger games, and lastly the pad and can play open world games and adventure very well but for the rest it is just the starting point.

    I’ve always used a stick for fighting games. I first went to an arcade when I was very little. And that’s around the same time that the local arcades died (born in 97). But after that with any console me and my brothers had I begged for whatever stick could come with it that christmas. And My fingers just don’t work on a pad for fighting games now 😅. Also going to locals and tournaments I see a lot of people’s personal flare on their sticks, it’s so dope. But also I wish I saw more custom pads out there. I know it’s possible, but it can get pretty expensive for a custom pad. Sometimes more than a stick. Have fun and play what’s comfortable.

    • @hetiswathetis
      @hetiswathetis 6 лет назад +1

      Zakaria Mohamed If you are using a pad I would definitely advise to use the d pad only. It might be difficult in the beginning to do the quarter circle backward and forward motions on a pad but you are more precise on a d pad then the analog stick. And it is much easier to dash on the d pad. I heard some people play street fighter with the stick for special moves and the d pad for dashing but I wouldn't advise that. Especially since dragonball is a much faster game. And switching between those two takes time.
      So I would say to use the d pad. But fighting games require practice so struggling to do the inputs consistently in the beginning is normal. But just practice and I'm sure you will learn it. And if not you could consider an arcade stick. For some people that feels better and they improve when using a stick.

      hetiswathetis Main reason why I switched to a stick for fighting games is because my hands sweat real fast so at a certain point, it makes inputs on a pad very difficult.

    I think pads have risen to the level of sticks in the past couple of years, and it’ll only get better. What you said about customization isn’t true anymore, but it comes with a caveat, which is stick prices. I have a battle beaver customs pad with mechanical triggers and a custom d pad for better inputs, and and a custom scuf completely customized, and to me, they’re better NOW than the stick I own.

    I was hoping for a real Vs. Like wire the input pads for both to the same trigger and measure how much input lag each has.

    i play on a ps3 madcatz korean edition fightstick, because i grew up in the arcades, and becuse my excution is better of stick, i mostly use the pad fro adventure games, they both have their purpose, and one ok my favourit tekken players lil majin plays on a pad and destroys people with it, it really about whatever you are comfortable with, very cool vid dude, i hope the fgc see that its really up to them which to use.

    I am able to play on both at high levels in fighting games but I prefer stick for 3d and high movement exicution heavy 2d like marvel and tekken but I’ll use pad for very set games where ur not really using direction buttons much like mkx and injustice , I try playing arcade stick on it but the need to block highs and lows constantly is just easier on pad while total directional movement and execution I can play on paid but I do a lot better on stick

      SnakeASaur it tends to be looser and the fact you need to switch pad-stick-pad since the analog stick is generally NOT the best for fighters.
