What gets me is that he retired from acting for twenty years and in his first major role since returning to acting, he wins an Oscar for it. I haven’t watched Oscar for the last few years and his speech is the ONLY one I watched this year! So proud of him! Congratulations Ke Huy Quan! You’re totally deserved it 🏆
Despite my contempt for Hollywood, this dude gave a great performance in a great movie and this genuinely made me cry. What a sweet guy, God bless him.
His performance in “Everything Everywhere All At Once” was absolutely immaculate, and that undersells it. His performance goes beyond words. This was so well deserved.
@B Babbich Well after that initial "lucky break" he mentioned being passed up over and over again because Hollywood just wasn't ready for Asian actors. I'd consider grappling with racial exclusion at the expense of your career a significant struggle, but that's just me Oh yeah just watched the vid - he also spent his first year *in a refugee camp*
@B Babbich just so you know even after filming EEAAO he lost his health insurance because he couldn’t reach the minimum requirements for the union for just any job!
Yes! Feels like this is why people love him and also love Pedro Pascal. They’ve worked so hard to achieve their dream, and it’s refreshing considering a large portion of Hollywood actors are « nepo babies. » It does not mean that they do not deserve credit either, just that these people are closer to us. They did not just enter the Hollywood family because of wealth or contacts, they entered because they waited at the door for years and knocked again and again and again.
When spoke about his brother, who just calls him to check up on him and tells him to take care of himself. I couldn’t hold back the tears. What a great soul.
This speech broke my heart and then I met him outside the A24 party. He is so infectious and full of life and energetic. They wanted to pull him away and he ran back for me and it was dark and he goes ‘I need a light!’. 🤣 the purest soul!
*I cry whenever I watch this. The true appreciation and humbleness of this man touches my heart. He was patient, true to himself and never gave up hope. This was the best part of the night for me.* ❤
I don't care who you are, where you came from, what you believe in...THIS DUDE...is the American Dream. The more we accept this, the better we will be as people, and as a nation.
Seconded. These are the people I believe in, these are my countrymen. The ones who struggle, the ones who try and believe in us even when we fail, and always and ultimately, the ones who love. I’m so proud of him. I’m so grateful for him. I wish we could all be like Ke Huy Quan.

And finally Michelle Yeoh! Only time I’ve geared up multiple times just because these 3 people that won last night, by all accounts, are great people and have gone through it to get where they are. Felt very satisfying seeing them rewarded for their perseverance.
It’s the fact that he almost gave up and they Daniel brothers called right before he did. He delivered one of the best performances I’ve ever seen, and for that, I am thankful. This story needed to be told.
As long as you believe in it, your time will come. Thank you Ke Huy Quan for this lifetime lesson. As a child of vietnamese refugees, your story moves me to the core.
@@edubbs3528 it gets complicated because Ke is of Hoa descent which is considered a minority group in Vietnam, so many Viets might not consider him one of their own? It's also telling that Ke's family settled in the Chinatown section of Los Angeles and not the "Little Saigon" area in south L.A. where most Viet refugees settled in the 80's.
I don't think an oscar for best supporting actor was ever as deserved as this one. The daniels wrote this "supporting role" that had higher demands than most leading roles and he was absolutely brilliant in it. And this moment and his speech is so authentic and raw and real, you just have to love it.
This dudes so sweet. So genuinely happy. You never see genuine, true people or even appreciative people these days. He knew he wanted to get somewhere in acting, he went for it! And now award winner and he's crying. Not fake, showing genuine appreciation for his own achievement. Hes showing it outwards to all his hardwork, desires and to the ones who supported him, let him run for what he wanted and held him up going towards it. No criticism. He gives appreciation to Fans who enjoy his work to give recognition. All that made it possible for him to get to what he's wanted since, honestly idk how long he had his dream to do this but he did it. And it's refreshing, honestly, to see such satisfaction, appreciation, and gratitude for what he's been able to accomplish. He's just a sweet dude. I've only seen him in one show, (and I liked him alot in it) ima have to look up other stuff he's in.
I love how humble he was and gave credit to everyone that helped him along the way. At the end of the day, no matter how old you are, you always want to show and express to your mom (and/or dad) that big achievement in your life and by doing so, you act like a kid again. This guy is great.
"Gave credit to everyone that helped him along the way" would've been so much more meaningful had he -- or asians and latinos -- hinted at, even in the faintest or indirect way -- hollywood's racist 'whites only' barrier that was broken or perhaps shattered by risk taking and courageous African American artists who not only demonstrated courage and tenacity for themselves but who also helped pave the way for other (P0C) film actors in hollywood today..
I love love love his acceptance speech! Love how the presenter everyone in the audience was so overjoyed at him winning. His acknowledgement of his mom, so heart touching. Tears running down my eyes, so overjoyed for him. Can just feel what it means to him in my soul.

Jonathan ke quan aka short round deserves this award. He’s a great actor never given the chance to truly prove himself. I’m glad he finally got the chance. This made me shed a tear.
Jonathan isn't really his name. He talked about how he was told to take up a more American name to try to get more opportunities and felt bad he was giving up his birth name for it. That's why it was important for him to return to his birth name for this role.
I love this man. I don’t know how there were so many people in the audience just staring stone faced at him during his speech. I was smiling the whole; what a humble and sincere man, and so well deserving l
This is by far the most beautiful and genuine speech I have ever heard 🥰🙏🏼transparency is everything. People in Hollywood should really try it more often.
The only speech that ever brought me to tears. Not because it was sad but because I believe him when he says I almost gave up on mine, never let go of your dreams ❤
Normally I very much think that the Oscar’s are stupid and self indulgent. But this was beautiful. The amount of gratitude and humility this man showed was beautiful. His “this really is the American dream” line got me choked up.
This has to be the most adorable Oscar acceptance speech of all time. You can't watch this and not want to give him a hug. Ke Huy Quan, if you're somehow reading this, you totally deserved this win. I agree and it shows how he is not only happy but how grateful he is to everyone and everything he had gotten. Basically, he doesn’t take anyone or anything for granted.
The message from the movie is cursi and a lie, hopefully it gets forgotten
@martinjugolin2087 Why do you say so?
@@martinjugolin2087 lol what? You’re a little slow aren’t you 😂
The fact that he got that incredible standing ovation. He is absolutely so deserving of this.
What gets me is that he retired from acting for twenty years and in his first major role since returning to acting, he wins an Oscar for it. I haven't seen the film, but it shows just how much of an amazing actor he must be to go up against actors like Brendan Gleeson and Judd Hirsch, and win it instead of them.
Standing ovation was great but I think Ke was especially touched that Spielberg was giving him on ovation --- the man who was responsible for starting his acting career!
I was shocked, even when she emotionally said his name who is the Oscar winner.
I'm not the type to cry much as a reaction to speeches. But this one was incredibly special and directly from his heart and soul. Congratulations Ke Huy Quan...you are so very special..and after all you've been through, you deserve this award in spades.
I really love how the presenter was choking up when she announced. She was rooting for him!
She did the thing
She is last years Academy Award winner for Best Supporting Actress, Ariana DeBose. She played Anita in Spielberg's version of _West Side Story_ .

It was the "Year of the Comeback" at the Oscars and it felt genuine and heartfelt --- especially after that disgusting slap-fest of last year LOL

@B Babbich exactly, he was sold to Spielberg as a kid and it’s so naive for people to think this is a real thing miraculous win
@B Babbich Well after that initial "lucky break" he mentioned being passed up over and over again because Hollywood just wasn't ready for Asian actors. I'd consider grappling with racial exclusion at the expense of your career a significant struggle, but that's just me
Oh yeah just watched the vid - he also spent his first year *in a refugee camp*
@B Babbich just so you know even after filming EEAAO he lost his health insurance because he couldn’t reach the minimum requirements for the union for just any job!
Yes! Feels like this is why people love him and also love Pedro Pascal. They’ve worked so hard to achieve their dream, and it’s refreshing considering a large portion of Hollywood actors are « nepo babies. » It does not mean that they do not deserve credit either, just that these people are closer to us. They did not just enter the Hollywood family because of wealth or contacts, they entered because they waited at the door for years and knocked again and again and again.

The way she announced his name is the way I felt hearing it. Seriously so touching...
