    If an RE game is gonna be linear, it needs well crafted combat. RE4 nails it.

      Oh dude, I played RE4 through twice in the past 3 days on the wii. You're incredibly right, many scenarios place a pressure to move forward in its design. However I felt a similar feeling of "oh my god, widen my field of view" and "seriously, that's how fast you move" to the game. As much as I loved it at the time, playing it on the Wii made me want to rip my hair out due to the controller and the way the camera worked with the controller. It's not bad, it was ahead of its time but games have refined it since then. The gameplay is still linear but rewarding, constantly pushing you forward throught action pressure

      Oh and you forgot that we're introduced to "shooting blue medallions". It's not big but it forces us to look around our locations to identify Spirals (or whatever their called). Sure we would have seen them regardless, but it introduces us to look vertically to find treasures and that's reinforced with the tunnel we walk through with the gem encrusted overhead.
      Treasure canbe found here, don't forget that

      Honestly. Thats completely true. Its the same with the battlefield devs. They openly admitted. That bad company 2 is probably the best or in the 3 of the series but said we still can not figure out exactly why. They try new and old ideas in new and old contexts to verrying success. Some games just are really lightning in a bottle. And devs spend decades wondering how. And the games after are simply them making educated guessing on what works and what we want along with needing to bring in enough new.

    RE4 was one of those games that benefited greatly from the fact that game development was still in the wild west as far as scope was concerned, so Mikami and his team got pretty much all the leeway in the world to throw in absolutely everything they could think of to create the game we know and love today. Ninja Gaiden was very much the same way in that regard. These days? Yeah, I can't imagine a producer signing off stuff like the split path chapter in the village portion, and other sections in the game.
    If you think about it, RE4's level/encounter design has a lot in common with Nintendo platformers. Nearly every fight has a unique twist or gimmick that makes it memorable all within the confines of the core mechanics. And those gimmicks are explored and then discarded to make way for the next idea, ala Yoshi's Island, DKC2, etc. People always talk about how Mario Galaxy plays around with an idea for a level then throws it out for a new one. How every level has a unique mechanic or gimmick etc. That’s RE4. The whole game is just a long series of “rooms” with entirely unique and self contained encounters in each.

    • @SuperWHIIITE
      @SuperWHIIITE 3 года назад +25

      Damn, I actually never noticed it but it is comparative to a Nintendo platformer. Re4's greatest strength is how aracedey it is. I can totally see myself going to a local arcade with a pocket full of quarters to play re4. Being surprised by each new stage and dying and dying, putting more and more coins in, but learning and getting further each time until I'm a master and show off to my friends how I can get through with a single life. Damn. I miss old school gaming like this so bad. Which is why its so important to preserve these games.

      all goes back to the core of the game, why is a game made, before games were more artistic pursues, or had some passion involved, or a vision, and idea, something like that, there was a real reason those game directors wanted to make a game, because back there games didn't made you stupid rich, nowadays, games are just a formula, a set number of steps to replicate something succesful and make a shit ton of money, and get people interested so they can repeat the formula, infinite money glitch

    There are exceptions, but 95% of the time in Resi4, you're controlling Leon from a third person, over the shoulder perspective and your main form of interacting with the world is pointing and shooting... yet it still manages to have so much variety due to great level and combat design. In my opinion, that's gameplay variety done right. The core mechanics remain the same, but the environment or enemies change. The kind of gameplay variety I despise is when say, all your weapons are taken away from you and you're forced to walk down long boring hallways with zero threats, scripted cinematic sequences, or god damn vehicle or turret sections.

    Blows my mind that RE4 restarted development in only 2003 and was released in early 2005 considering the level of creativity going on. Either they reused buttloads of scrapped content from earlier iterations, or Mikami and his team are just that good.

    Third person shooter games still fall short of RE4's glory one way or another. Whether it be the encounter design, level design, gameplay loop, pacing, enemy variety, boss fights, replayability, etc. Some games may have surpassed it in certain aspects, but none of them deliver such a fun and complete package as RE4. I feel confident in saying that this game will continue to go unchallenged in its genre as modern design trends and the rigors of modern development put a ceiling on what's realistically possible. It's a special game from a special team.

    • @soulpath1
      @soulpath1 2 года назад +10

      Yeah.... so many of modern "next-gen" games are so ruled and trapped by technology and trends and using technology just cuz they can, rather than ruling the technology itself and using it to help the game experience. The devs said they tried to make RE8 as "immersive" as possible but it's not nearly as immersive of a vibe as RE1 remake or RE4. It's "immersion" as in fake pseudo-VR firstperson perspective which is different from immersion as in true emotional, visual/aural, psychological immersion into the character/story and game atmosphere. VR games should really be their own category cuz this new trend of having VR-style perspective is detracting from the true cinematic potential of next-gen games. This is why so many people really dislike that Cyberpunk is in ONLY first-person, including cutscenes. There's none of that true directorial-cinematic storytelling experience. Just Hardcore Henry gimmick vibe. Gets unappealing fast.

  • @maxmocs5008

    I think my main problem with RE Village is not how linear the game is (though that is part of it) but rather how linearly the objectives are set up. The 4 bosses you must fight in the game are all lords under Mother Miranda, but you have to kill each of them independantly, one after another. I think it would have been a lot more interesting, and cooler had the game's entire map just been the Village and Castle Dmistrescu, with the 4 main villains each inhabiting different parts of the castle, and working together to take down the player, instead of competing to be the Mother's favorite.
    Then the game could be both open world and more terrifying. Lady Dmistrescu could patrol the castle as a constant threat, Benevento could keep the player on edge in certain parts of the castle with hallucination scares and by taking away your weapons, and Heisenberg could constantly patrol the surrounding village and forest, capable of buffing lichens. Then they could all be a threat, and you could still explore the castle in a non-linear way.

      I don't feel open world would work for RE survival action horror. The amount of self-imposed challenges you can perform in RE4 is INSANE. Couple that with a fantastic enemy encounter, the Mercenaries mode (basically a game within a game) and a satisfying, impactful, well-crafted combat and you have one of the most content rich games in the industry. I can't properly put into words how high the replay value of this title is. I love it the same way I love my family, no hiperbole.

    • @GIR177
      @GIR177 Год назад

      @@Neathyr Eh, I definitely like RE4 but I really haven't returned to it much outside of the first couple initial playthroughs back when I was obsessed with it as a teenager. The enemy encounters become pretty laughable once you get used to reliably getting melee followups due to the invincibility frames they offer, which gets stale when you consider RE4's impressive length. The Garradors and Regenerators are really the only two enemies where your standard "eat lead" approach doesn't really work and forcing you play around that, hence why they're typically the most memorable encounters outside of the boss fights for most people. By the time RE4 starts throwing enemies with gatling guns at you, you already know any creative depth found in the combat system had been milked dry at that point.
      Self imposed challenges to make replays more interesting can be said for a lot of games but shouldn't be on the onus of the player, and outside of creative stuff like randomizers, most are just "play the game with this dumb arbitrary restriction".

Now my first playthrough was on Hardcore and of course that first survive the lycans encounter really kicked my ass, probably died more than 10 times and almost took me an hour to get through it, i didn't hate it though and actually love that part, it made me realize how the rest of the game is gonna go down. I realize i will need to be careful with the rest of the combat encounters since i was always so low on ammo, enemies took tons of bullets to kill and they can kill you in a couple of hits, every fight became extremely intense and that's how it became a survival horror game to me. This feeling went throughout the entire game and made the combat encounters extremely enjoyable to me.
      Also yeah i really do like the story and characters, I'm also a sucker for father saving their kid stories and really love Ethan as a character, he's so normal and generic, it became endearing when compared to all the other colorful characters in the RE series, he tries so hard to make one liners that it becomes so bad that it goes around to being actually funny. Calling things 'lazy' is just a thing I notice you do. I just feel its very misplaced because these teams are usually over-worked and over-managed.
    I'm not defending the design work (I have not played the game), I'm just saying 'Slapdash' or 'underdeveloped' are better words to describe this stuff, even if you are being emotional.

      It is lazy. They didn't care in the slightest about the flow of their gameplay. Partly cause it's hard to do. And partly because they wanted to water down the experience for a general audience. The artists aren't lazy. The weapon designers aren't lazy. The people who work are not lazy. The people in CHARGE are.

      In addition, even if the design was to intentionally simplify it for greater appeal, that still is not laziness. I find that misguided, but again - not lazy.
      Again, I'm not throwing out some defense of Village. This is just my personal bugaboo when people call things lazy, when it game development, especially at the AAA stage, it's nigh impossible for something to happen without hours of intentional design work (simplifying, even if I agree is misguided, is still something that requires a lot of work).
      For instance, I personally feel Prey (the modern one) runs out of juice and becomes too easy about 3/5ths into the game. But I wouldn't say it was because of 'laziness' on the developer's side.

    That is a too nostalgic way at looking and comparing the two games. RE Village also takes you every hour and represents something new. You are in the village with lycans attacking you at the first place. Then you get a puzzle to open the castle doors.
    You go to the castle. Before the castle you get a introduction to the 4 lords. You fight 3 mini boses (like the sea monster and the stone man in RE4), you fight Lady D.
    You go back to the village, have new sections to explore in the village.
    You go to Donna and it will scare the shit out of you.
    You visit the ugliest man and have a water section.
    You visit the lycans den
    You visit Heisenberg
    You have a action sequence with Chris
    You fight Miranda.

    Honest to God question, why do people consider linearity in games a bad thing? please chime in because I've never seen it as something bad, I think some games benefit from being linear and linearity becomes a vocal point in those games, and the reason that they're good. Let me know what you think tho.

    • @connorism69
      @connorism69 3 года назад +1

      I think it's only bad if it seems forced. For example, I absolutely loved The Evil Within, but the linearity is at times annoying and detracts from its realism. There are so many places that you would explore if you were actually in that situation, but it sometimes puts you on very narrow tracks, seemingly needlessly. In horror/suspense games, the ability to explore a bit is important, and thinking that you may have to return to an old area at any time means you have to pay more attention. Otherwise you end up playing it like a track-shooter, making each area seem as irrelevant as the next. Fortunately, I don't think RE4 fell into that trap; it found the balance and got it almost perfect (as did The Evil Within 2).

    • @underthemayo

      Most of my favorite games are linear. But linear games need gameplay crafted to compliment their linearity. RE4 does that well with its action.

    • @markcobuzzi826
      @markcobuzzi826 3 года назад +3

      If you would like me to offer another two cents, I feel that when it comes to mainline Resident Evil games, a small-but-nonlinear game and a linear-but-large game can both work. However, I take issue when an RE game is both very small and extremely linear, as I will explain further down in this comment...
      Now, because I am still waiting before I purchase RE Village, I am in no position to fully judge how much I agree with Mayo’s critique of it. But I have played every single mainline game up to this point.
      For me, one positive example is the original three RE games on PS1, plus the RE1 Remake. All of these games are relatively small, and their campaigns can be beaten in just a few hours, if you have mastered the gameplay and know the most efficient way to speed-run. However, those games are built like complex and open-ended puzzle escape rooms, which have a variety of alternate orders/paths to the end. For the first time playing them, gamers will need time to figure out all of the solutions to progress and have the freedom to choose multiple paths to the end, which may even result in different endings. This adds more time the player can spend playing and feeling immersed, as well as incentives for replay value. Practicing to figure out how quickly one can beat the campaign becomes its own appeal, due to how its non-linearity makes it more challenging to figure out the perfect speedrun. *I would almost include the RE2 Remake, but I feel that it botched the replayability of its campaign compared to the original’s, by butchering the A/B scenario dynamic that added alternate scenarios and more branching paths.*
      On the other hand, RE4 is relatively linear compared to those other games I just mentioned (though, I would argue that it still features a good amount of exploration, puzzles, backtracking, and optional paths which satisfied me). But RE4 makes up for it by not only being a huge game, but also having a lot of depth and complexity to its basic mechanics. One’s first playthrough can still be long, on account of the game’s sheer size and number of distinct levels, plus there can be some replay value in other ways (such as beating the campaign with a different arsenal). As much as I took issue with RE6, I could still praise to for having so much campaign content, that it partially makes up for being far more linear and on-rails than even RE4.
      In my experience, the most negative example I have is the RE3 Remake. For that game, the campaign’s size and progression operates like the classic RE games, without the non-linear level design and narrative structure, which made those old games good in spite of them being short. Yet it feels more linear and on-rails than even RE4, without at least having the sheer amount of campaign content that RE6 had to compensate. Because the exploration, size, and basic mechanics all feel shallow, what I experienced was a game that was both short and linear, plus deprived of replay value. So for that instance, the extreme linearity contributed to it being a disappointingly mediocre game, in my opinion.

Just like you said, I was more or less lulled into thinking this game really good barring some frustration here and there. I found your rollercoaster analogy to be spot on, and while I had a genuinely good time playing 8 I don't think it quite holds up under the critical lens. I definitely don't see myself replaying it any time soon.
    My only big disagreement with you is Ethan and his character. While it is cheesy, his characterization is much more entertaining than being the perpetually confused goofball he was in 7. Resident Evil 4 is a very hard to top, beautifully crafted game. Although its maps are linear in design (even tho, still not as linear as later games), the gameplay itself is very much open ended, everyone has their own unique way of playing, and you can play in different ways on each playthrough. With RE8, pretty much all playthroughs are the same. There are very few choices on what to do at any given moment, and this is ironic because the Resident Evil 2 did the gameplay very much right, where everyone would play in a different way, and of course with the addition of the open ended exploration. How does Capcom keep fucking up?

      @@charlestonobryant807 yea I get your point. I'm not saying you're casual or anything like that. It's the game's fault- it is designed in a way to make its eye candy experience more significant than the player's actual involvement with game. You do not feel anything after finishing re8- it's just another game maybe u feel a lil excited but that's it, but trust me go and play re1 remake and after finishing that tell me if you don't feel like u really accomplished anything.
      I'm not trying to offended you but honestly, as a person who really appreciates and has played almost every re game since my childhood- I can certainly state it as a fact that re8 is a very easy and mindless game(except the factory part) and with some of the worst enemy body hit interactivity in all of re games. The level of enjoyment is ofc subjective and I'm also happy that u enjoyed the game, there's nothing nothing wrong with that.
      Another thing I'd like to say is about the scoring part- even the highest rated games of all time do not have perfect 100. Re8, even if it's score is 80+, is already regarded as one of the best ac in so many list(which I think is an absolute joke). But point is even if there are some criticisms- most of times they're misdirected, like for ex someone says the game is too easy and then he himself says but it's okay just play in hard difficulty. This is exactly what's wrong with the criticism- the game itself has bad ai and level design, by increasing difficulty and making yourself die faster or making enemies more bullet spongy the game might get hard but it won't get anymore fun.
      Some other criticisms go like- doll house is too scary, factory is too confusing. These are subjective problems, no one talks about the innate bad ai or level design or sense of fake exploration or the over abundance of handholded scenarios. Even if people do, it is overshadowed by the praise or in extreme cases like when mayo did the previous review video, get 1/4th dislikes even if he said so many completely valid points. I'd say reviewers are afraid to say bad thing about the game in fear that people will dislike them. Steam for example has overwhelming positive reviews with almost 30k reviews, like any newcomer will come to conclusion that this must be the best and perfect re game....

      @TGK18 RE4 was my first RE so you can take that argument and shove it.
      And it seems to me you're the one who never played RE 2, 3 and CV because these are not action games.
      It's not about "hur dur these gamea had explosions"...it's about how these games played compared to RE4, a game that is much more linear and had more focus on fighting and encouraging it by having enemies drop ammo, healing items and money to buy new weapons and ammo.

    • @Miyakolover
      @Miyakolover 2 года назад

      @TGK18 You really love reciting BS that others have typed, don't you? I heard these same exact BS arguments before word for word and they are easy to debunk.
      1. You didn't provide anything proving RE2 was an action game...so telling me "It turns into an epic action game after the police station" is flatout bullshit.
      2. How does adding a dodging mechanic automatically make RE3 an action game? Haunting Grounds (a game where you have no weapons) had it...Tormented Souls that released recently is regarded as a survival horror Masterpiece (and it has weapons had it)....so stop acting like adding a dodge mechanic automatically makes the game more action oriented (especially on hard mode where the the success rate is much lower of pulling it off).
      3. So what if Nemesis has a rocket launcher? Does it change how you experience the game? Does it turn into a cover based shooter? Does the game allow you to use free-aim mode to shoot his missiles before they hit you? All it means it's a long range attack you have to avoid and Nemesis loses the rocket launcher midway through the game anyway.
      4. Again, we are talking GAMEPLAY and how the game plays...the opening of CV doesn't have any effect on the gameplay and doesn't turn the game into an action shooter, for most of the game the focus is exploring and solving puzzles...for oyur complains about the final boss shooting fire balls I give the same reply regarding Nemesis rocket launcher...it doesn't change how you play the game.
      5. Sure....RE2 and RE3 give you alot of ammo and health items...but guess what, you have to go out of your way to go exploring the levels and find them and storing them in save rooms (Which would slow down speedrunners when you have to keep going back and fourth to the save room due to limited inventory)...so it's not the same as RE4 where REGULAR enemies keep dropping shit for you on top of finding stuff as you play the game (that and RE4 has a much more linear design than the classic RE games).
      6. Firstly, last time I checked Nemesis dropped weapon parts (but I need to revise that since it's been a while since I played the game)...But it's one thing when it's ONE boss enemy that's insanely powerful and takes alot of ammo to put down (using up your resources) to simply get some weapon parts on the optional encounters (the non-optional Nemesis fights don't drop you anything)...comparing this to RE4 is stupid because in RE4 EVERY ENEMY potentially drops ammo, healing items and money for the player...thus RE4 encourages you to grind and kill as many enemies as possible to get a "new toy"....while in RE3 killing Nemesis multiple times is risky and you don't have to do the optional fights to beat the game anyway...while in RE4 it's a main part of the gameplay to kill enemies for money to buy more weapons.
      7. I don't care about the merchant...the point I was making is that RE4 gameplay is designed around encouraging the player to shoot and kill as many enemies as possible so when you find the merchant you get to buy stuff and "new toys"...also lets not forget that RE4 lets you upgrade your weapons at will as long as you have the cash for it rather than making you find weapon parts for it...again encouraging you to grind and shoot more enemies.
      Classic RE games are nothing like RE4, stop being a fanboy and wake up from your delusion.

    • @Miyakolover
      @Miyakolover 2 года назад +1

      @TGK18 It does matter because you accused me of being "nostalgic" when that's not true at all.
      I played RE4 before I played any of the classics...infact I never liked classic RE games before RE4 got me into the series and eased me into it...three years later my interest piqued with the original and I bought the original trilogy and even got a Game Cube to play Remake and 0.
      I am able to do the comparison between the classic and RE4 in a very objective manner and I love RE4...but telling me that "Classic RE games are as action heavy as RE4" is a bullshit statement.
      You can be sick of hearing it...but it is a fact that RE4 isn't a Resident Evil game...it's a unique game that did it's own thing and it succeeded so much that it didn't need the Resident Evil brand to be slapped all over it.
      If Capcom didn't call it RE4 it would have still being a successful game...my only problem with it is because it used the RE name that Capcom abandoned the old style and all of it fans behind like we're not important.

    Eh, I would say that Resident Evil Village had a couple of fairly unique encounters. The one with the lycans in the cornfield and the basement filled with blood for example, those did a good job of keeping you on edge. The cornfield has you choose between getting in close for more danger, but better visibility, or you could choose to stay at a safe distance but have the enemy obscured by the corn.
    The section where you go through the same village as the start, only this time there was a giant wolf enemy roaming around was interesting. You are essentially forced to choose between hiding in houses to avoid a strong enemy, but you end up fighting weaker enemies in an enclosed space. Or you can choose to fight the wolf monster immediately, which gives you more space to take all the weaker enemies.
    Then there's the whole factory section, which did a decent job of introducing new combat encounters, with new enemy types being introduced by busting through walls and shit. Resident Evil 8 isn't without these sections, but they just aren't nearly common enough, especially not comparable to 4.
    I also really think you're completely misrepresenting Resident Evil Village's starting area in your comparison to Resident Evil 4. You claim that it immediately throws you into a level with hoards of enemies rather than easing you into the controls... But that's just false. It starts in almost exactly the same way as Resident Evil 4 does. First you are thrown against a SINGLE lycan in a 1 on 1 fight that gets you used to the controls, then you get a breather, then you are thrown into a combat encounter where you have to hide in a house, grab a shotgun and barricade the door. That is almost exactly how Resident Evil 4 starts. It's a pretty blatant misrepresentation there.

Even in the earliest sections of the game, you had regular ganados armed with melee weapons paired with dynamite throwers, and the chainsaw guy thrown somewhere in the middle. Even the cultists alone have like 5 varieties: Shield Bois, the ones with scythes, ones with bowguns, flail priests, and ones with rocket launchers. @Megashark 101 I wouldn’t necessarily call it a copy paste mentality for the most part, I think the use of enemies are very deliberate here since I believe their placement in the areas you fight them in work to their strengths which in turn creates fair challenges even in higher difficulties
      Though I can definitely agree with the game really lacking on the combination of enemies to create a challenge, something I believe RE2R and RE4 did really well, there’s some small exceptions (both Varcolac encounters, the stronghold, the factory labyrinth, the urias fights), and it didn’t really have to be like that since this is something the mercenaries does really well, especially if you don’t make your weapons too powerful to create a more challenging experience

    I dont really get your arguement in this vid. It seems like you're grading both games with the same scale, while also stating that they're very different. For instance, when you talk about how RE4 gradually introduces you to the mechanics and combat, while decrying 8 for not doing the same. This isn't taking into account the context of how novel RE4's mechanics were at the time. It practically invented the over the shoulder 3rd person shooter, and was the first in its series to control that way, so having a slow ramp up in mechanical challenge was necessary, especially for fans of the series. Village, on the other hand, has an identical perspective and control scheme to the prior game and most people are very accustomed to first person controls generally. So criticizing the game for not giving you enough time to get used to the game feel just doesn't make any sense.
    Also, the progression of the level design/enemy encounters cant accurately be compared bc both games are entirely different, mechanically speaking. For one thing, bumping up the FOV to the degree you've got it in this vid is obviously gonna ruin the combat, and make it much easier. The entire game and its mechanics were designed with a set field of view in mind. I get that some people get motion sick with low FOV settings, but modding the game to allow a perspective that it was never designed to accommodate, and then criticizing the level and encounter design seems a little disingenuous. RE4 could accommodate huge groups of enemies because the melee and weapons were extremely effective at dealing with huge enemy groups. Village doesn't have the same kind of crowd control potential, and so is designed to emphasize intimate encounters, with fewer enemies. Having them begin to hone in on you in tight spaces thus needed to maintain high situational awareness. Which is obviously compromised when you've got a really wide field of view.
    Anyways, I appreciate the vid none the less. Take care.

      The point is that RE4 does 2 things well that Village needed to do and failed to do. 1) introduce it's game and show how it's going to be played 2) provide unique experiences and engaging encounters to compliment its linearity

    • @hunternogales578
      @hunternogales578 3 года назад +11

      @@underthemayo I'd argue that Village manages to pull off both of those things (not trying to be a contradictory ass, just enjoying good natured disagreement).
      The opening segment in 8 sets expectations accurately, for the most part. You've got the combat focused Village encounter, an escape sequence with in the manor, and acquiring the key item to open up the first area, all common experiences throughout the game. Granted, it doesn't set any sort of expectations for the novel designs later on, like Benevito's section, or the boss fight with Heisenberg.
      The second point seems a bit more subjective. I guess that critique depends on what you consider a worthwhile experience. Because I would argue that the game provides a large variety of different encounters/gameplay. I think the critical distinction here is that that point isn't always expressed through the combat. Benevito's house was radically different than anything else in the game, and the same can be said (albeit to a lesser degree) about the other lords' sections. Whether or not one values these as worthwhile distinctions, or unnecessary diversions is subjective, but I believe it satisfies the second point technically speaking. And I really think the FOV is a big factor here. If you think about the fact (or at least my assumption) that everything about the game, from mechanics to enemies to level design, were designed to be experienced from a single intentionally low FOV value, then altering that value could compromise the entire experience. I mean would RE7, or even 2, be the same with a much wider FOV? Idk, but I'm guessing they'd be similarly compromised.
      Thanks for the reply, made me really think for this one.

However, that is no excuse to disregard players that experience motion sickness. They shouldn't have to rely on a mod to fix things. Look at RE7. It had 3 FOV options. 70, 80 and 90. A FOV value such as 90 doesn't trivialize things and gets rid of most people's issues related to FOV.

      @@hunternogales578 personally I don't think these make re8 bad, but the thing is, compared to re4, you had constant large combat, re8 throws 4 enemies every 20 minutes, with the rest of the game being fake exploration. If a game tries to be exploration focused while also being linear, it becomes braindead walking. And that's the disappointing aspect. The fact that a lot of the gameplay could've been more than just walking with occasional enemies. The game isn't bad, the gameplay was just a bit carelessly designed

    This is a solid argument but imo Village is an RE sequel in name only. It is fundamentally different from every other resident evil because it plays like a dynamic, edge-of-your-seat horror flick.
    Now as a game director that poses a problem because it's a game, not a movie, how do you keep the film rolling at a reasonable/enjoyable pace? Cutscenes + east exploration + linearity, the less linear village is the duller the pace gets.
    Hope you reconsider the argument Mayo, love the vids!

      I actually really enjoy TEW's style, it's got cool horror, and the letterboxing never bothered me. Plus, the villain Ruvik, while monotonous and drab is still kind of interesting in other aspects. I think his relation to Laura makes things weird and unsettling in a cool way. Turns out an easy way to have a character make you uncomfortable is by having them want to fuck their siblings lmfao.
      TEW2 would have been better in my mind if not for the second half. Christ, everything about that first villain is so legitimately cool and unique but the second one was lame as shit. Kinda wish TEW2 was more linear too tbh.

    I believe the parasites sprouting is random to some enemies. But, there are specific Ganados/Zealots that will auto-sprout. After repeated playthroughs I've done, it is likely that regular Ganados may be random. The same guy I headshotted didn't sprout. Further proving that the parasite spawns are random while there are others who are designated to spawn a parasite.
