@@randomt800kiddo2 this video is not objective at all. This is personal opinion with very little evidence to support it arguments. Just because he spoke for 20 minutes doesn’t mean the points were relevant. Name one company in the industry that has been successful for decades without adapting or progressing the product. RE4 grabbed the newer market share that it’s previous games we’re not, the series might not have been dying but it was beginning to stagnate which is a leading indicator of decline in market share. the 3rd person POV alone set the industry standard for every other 3rd person game and capcom was applauded by its peers in the industry. In terms of audience these gaming companies understand that appealing to the kid who played your game 15 years ago is not going to have the same time to invest as an adult, they are looking to capture younger and newer audiences this is basic for most entertainment companies. I sympathize with this creators wishes to relive and play the same style of Resident evil in his adolescence but unfortunately business does not care. The point of business is too grow and make the most amount of profit as possible, RE4 successfully did that at the time which is why capcom put so much effort into remaking RE4 compared to 2 & 3, they understand the impact the game had for the series and it’s audience who played the original is still young enough or at that age where they have the money and time (ages 18-25). The OG RE4 is old but not as old as the other instalments to the series.
This video does not come from a objective business perspective. It’s weak argument with a controversial title to bring in views for his channel.

Huh, this is honestly the first time I've ever heard about this sentiment. Like everyone know's RE 4 was a massive sucess that helped create a new genre and drastically shift the direction of RE for years but "save" it? From what? Even when it wasn't as big as it was up to that point RE was one of Capcom's most sucessful IP's ever only really behind Street Fighter. The hype was slightly dying down by then cause the last mainline game, Nemesis, was 5-6 years old at that point and the IP was surviving off spin-off games of varying quality.
Saying RE 4 "saved" RE is like saying Breath of the Wild "saved" Zelda. Massive influential games sure but the IP was doing perfectly fine both quality and profit wise.

Yes but for how much longer would they have been successful? That’s what this video fails to address from a business perspective. Companies that fail to progress stay stagnant, there becomes a lack of growth. RE4 was THAT game which brought that growth back to the series. To add to this, gaming companies are not interested in only pleasing their older fan base. These companies understand as people age they tend to get busy with life and do not have the time to spend playing these games as much, thus leading to the consumer becoming less engaged with content. The goal is to target new audience bases and figure out how to keep that cycle going. Not to mention RE4 set the industry standard on the 3rd person POV. If a company is setting industry standards it’s is considered a success by its peers. I sympathize with this creator because he is an OG fan and he wants what he got from his childhood, but unfortunately business demands otherwise. You either adapt, or die. That is business, at least for this industry.

@@Bino8724 The whole reason as to why those games failed is because of the bad decisions and exclusivity deals made by capcom. Mayo never argued that RE 4 was unnecessary or never made series even more popular in the first place his whole point was against those people who use the success of RE 4 and lackluster sales of other 6th gen titles to say "RE was dying". As to why RE 4 came out the way it did,it's not because of desperation for newer audience but out of an intent to shift the direction because the team itself was already burnt out on classic formula not because of sales but because they have already perfected, improved and innovated on their design to a point where no amount of gimmicks would have prevented formula from going stale. I would not quite go that far, since I feel the differences between an Action-Shooter and an RTS game are more vast. Those are, compared to the differences between a Survival Horror built around cinematic fixed cameras and a Survival Horror built around an over-the-shoulder camera.
I might instead compare it to a scenario, where Nintendo decided to remake TLoZ: A Link to the Past, only to ditch the classic top-down perspective in favor of the camera system in TLoZ: Ocarina of Time. Seriously, by that logic, then RE4 is a cashgrab because Capcom has been taking "how to make cashcow" pages from Bethesda. Another thing that makes that criticism irrelevant is considering the fact that this in an INDUSTRY, games don't make themselves from trees, they are made by talented people who are given money and the company expects a return of greater investment. I started with 4 as well around 2019 when I saw my friend play it on his laptop during school. I thought it was interesting and since I've never played a real horror game before I decided why not at least try it. I played it until the part before Mendez boss fight but then I got busy with school exams and stopped playing.
Then a couple of months later the pandemic happened and I heard about how good the remake for re2 was, so I decided to try the og. And I was hooked right off the bat, though the tank controls did feel weird and I still have trouble moving precisely sometimes (probably because my controller sucks and pressing up sometimes registers left and right).
Re2 made me a fan of the series, it actually has good horror and the tank controls gave a bit of tension because of how clunky it is to move. I also like the metroidvania-like exploration where you find an item and backtrack to progress, something missing from re4.
I'm still confused on how to feel about the change in the series, I like that the series is diverse and there's a type of game for people who enjoy horrors, action, or even just exploring the scenery in the game. RE is probably one of my most favourite franchises now, I just hope they don't make a bad move and release missed opportunities like 6 and 3 remake.

The original re2 has a very cool style and sound design that got changed significantly in remake, the puzzles and collecting was a lot more involved to get out through the sewer, the 3 medallions to fight Birkin always seemed weird in the remake and then the chess puzzle was toned back too making it a quick exercise, where instead the original had you carrying mostly chess pieces and running w few weapons and no inventory space, or had you backtracking some for them.
Completing the original re2 is such a fun time and felt very very rewarding. It's tricky to master and not very forgiving, if you can start remembering basic layouts and try to start going for A or S ranks, or play to a save point and then reload and do that section better time, that's when it gets the most fun. Most people need more hand holding though, so of course the mostly linear but open layout of re4 is popular.
I liked re2 because of the insane game design playing 2 campaigns to beat the game, and having the 2 characters intersect, the writing is a thing of beauty, and I wish they didn't have to sacrifice it so much like they ended up doing in the remake bc the A B scenario used to be even better than they pulled off in 2019.

Born in 1995 so I couldn't exactly save up to purchase the console with RE1R. It was always something I was constantly aware of, maintaining a mythic status where I sporadically saw posters, old advertisements, etc. I still played the original RE1 despite not knowing how to progress further than the first few floors, it honestly might have been one of the first video games I ever played. If the remake was available on PS2 I definitely would have rented/begged my parents to buy it despite not being in that perceived demographic of who the title was marketed towards. I never had the money to own RE4, I still remember having a chest infection at the age of 11/12 and blasting through a rented copy in a matter of days. It was the only RE title I'd ever actually finished at that point.

My only disagreement with you is about how the series would have looked like have Capcom NOT botched the marketting of RE1 Remake with the exclusivity deal....I don't think that RE4 in it current state would have been a thing...instead I'd argue it would be closer to the scrapped RE4 demo (aka RE 3.5) and the series wouldn't too actionized as it did.
However, I wouldn't rule out the possibility that we may have gotten a third person shooter in the style of RE4, just not under the "Resident Evil" name.

I think one of the reasons Shinji Mikami wanted the exclusivities was because, despite being the less successful console, the Gamecube was the most powerful system among the Xbox, PS2, and GC lineup. In fact the system's hardware was the exact reason he and the rest of Capcom wanted to do RE4 and REmake on GC.
Are the reasons understandable? Kind of. They had to make a metric fuck ton of changes to RE4's models, levels, and cutscenes in order to get it working on the PS2 and it's safe to say because of that the PS2 version visually looks the worst out of the other versions on consoles. And Shinji REALLY didn't want REmake to suffer the same fate.
But at the same time if they could get RE4 to work on the PS2, then sacrificing the visuals of REmake shouldn't matter expecially considering we know with the release of RE4 on other consoles post Xbox, PS2, and GC that the visuals of the Gamecube version were eventually used for re-releases with the costumes and modes from the PS2 version getting upscalled to match the GC's visual style alongside being ported with future re-releases.
The same thing could've happened for REmake on PS2, sure the visuals would've taken a big hit and the cutscenes more than likely woud've been replaced with ugly FMVs instead of the gorgeous pre-rendered in-game style ones like with RE4's and their quick-time events, but if it means reaching out more and making more money then the ends justify the means especially if eventual re-releases end up doing what RE4 did as I mentioned.

I love RE2make since they seem to finally find the perfect balance between action and horror. I was very surprised to learn there was a Remake of the original RE, and I was even more surprised to learn it was an exclusive for some console absolutely no one heard about. While EVERYONE played RE games on Playstation, which was a very popular console. After RE3 the series just kinda disappeared.
I experienced a huge feeling of despair for not being able even theoretically get what I wanted. I had to simply deal with it. I felt like I was not invited to the party of my friends, like all the world was able to play games I was unable to, I felt separated and left alone. Which is kinda strange, but yeah, it is what it is.
For some reason PS2 wasn't as popular as PS1 in Ukraine, probably because PC was becoming a much more common and universal tool for gaming, because everything was pirated, including copies of PS1 games sold at stores, but having a computer you didn't even need to buy games, you could just download it, so why buying PS2 and then buying games for it? Games like SH2-3, MGS2-3, RE4 (unlike RE5 which did release on PC) only became accessable to me in 2010s when emulators became a thing for PS2.

I think the issue with these types of conversations generally is that "saving" a series is a pretty ambiguous claim to begin with ha. Resident evil 4 certainly changed the series radically in terms of gameplay and combat (certainly for the better in my opinion) but in that sense you can also say that it killed the series as it once was from the fixed camera angle design. Commercially there is no denying it had explosive sales and probably moved the series higher up in terms of priority for Capcom. What Resi4 managed to do was bring in this massive patchwork of audience demographics all playing the game and enjoying it for slightly different reasons. For example I play resi4 as an action beat em' up style game, and so I don't really play the earlier resi games as I'm not into survival horror. But resi 4 does have survival horror elements as well, so those fans also enjoy the game. I think a more accurate claim is that Resi4 made the series more commercially viable, as the sales data reflects that clearly. But I agree that it's not like if Resi4 flopped that capcom would abandon the franchise entirely, it probably would have just been less frequent releases like we see with DMC.

The reason I always saw for this idea that re4 saved the franchise is 4-fold. The first being it's a convenient excuse for capcom to have for their mismanagement of the franchise from all those lackluster spin-offs between 3 and 4. The second being re4 is one of the most influential games of all time and having it have the story of being reworked from the ground up 3 or 4 times until shizza had it just right gives it an even bigger story to be a part of as a underdog that beat the odds. the third being it was the most accessible of the series for a long time everybody and their mother had a ps2 and wii so there was always a good way to introduce people to the series from it and give the speech. And it only got easier with the rereleases for any current console or pc. the fourth and easiest thing is that people want to erase this idea that 4 split the fans back in the day idk if anyone even recalls but I remember alotta people praising the og games over 4 for doing horror better and vice versa for 4 being more fun to play because of the gunplay meanwhile I was somewhere else replaying REmake and 4 not caring about fan arguments that went nowhere.

By the time RE Zero was finished, it's been said that some of the staff was so bored
😫😫 working on RE that they asked to be transferred to other projects. This gave Shinji a reason to due what ever it takes to make RE4 a hit.
Get this when Capcom announced that RE 4 was ported to the ps2, Shinji was so extremely upset that might consider quitting Capcom, which he did.
He also stated that the reason he created God Hand is because he was so extremely burned out by RE.

Really well done video. I started with 0 the beginning of this year and worked my way up to 4 remake. 0 and 1 were rough at first but I loved what I was experiencing. 2 and 3 remakes were really fun and even though there was more action, at least 2 had some of the charm with puzzles. Code Veronica was interesting cause it through it back to the old style which I had become accustomed to. Now that I’m on 4 remake I’m struggling hard to enjoy it. The action is balls to the wall and it has a completely different vibe to it than any of the other entries I’ve played so far. Not to mention I lowkey suck at it on standard difficulty…

    Good video man.
I think the history of RE has always been: Capcom does "something" (usually business and trend oriented), and fans defend it to death, and put a positive spin on it.
Capcom does away with old cameras and goes for more action? Fans: it was needed, they saved the dying formula.
Capcom turns 5 and 6 into crazy michael bay: Fans: ofc its an action series with superheroes now, the characters grew and became experts and it can't be just zombies and small contained locations all the time!
Capcom releases Revelations 1 & 2 in most platforms: Fans: there you go! now the revelations series can be the horror RE series, and the main entries can continue with the action
Capcom announces RE2R after public demand. Fans: YES! WE DO IT! MAKE IT JUST LIKE RE1R!!!
Capcom shows RE2 isn't much of a remake after all: Fans: OMG LOOK AT THOSE GRAPHICS AND ZOMBIES!, fixed cams suck anyway, they were obsolete!
Capcom releases the reimagining of RE2. Fans: it's supposed to be new and modern! duh!, they can't bring back those terrible old controls and cameras, get up with the times!
Capcom destroys RE3R in nearly every way possible. Fans: Its fine! RE3 og was already short, and more action focused than 2 and just a spinoff, and nobody liked it as much as the others anyway, we should be thankful they did it at all!
Capcom shows and releases RE8. Fans: boobs! vampires! werewolves! boobs!, horror? nah RE7 was too scary, 8 has the best things of 4 now, its a shooter, it has a merchant and weapon upgrades.
Capcom releases RE4R: Fans: incredible! perfect! the best game ever made! RE4 og sucked anyway! and this new one is all serious and realistic and dark and scary!!! no more dumb things! absolutely NOTHING WAS LOST! EVERYTHING IS BETTER!
Capcom does terrible new OSTs: Fans: bro if you like the old music that much just buy the DLC from the remakes and that's it! you should be thankful they sell it to you, it shows how much they care for the old ones.
While some of these dumb pseudo-arguments were invented by fans, sometimes capcom execs and devs invent them first or keep them going. It's a beautiful symbiotic relationship.

BREAKING NEWS: "The fifth new GameSpot show is How It Saved. The series is hosted by GameSpot senior producer Dave Klein, and it documents how specific games have pulled franchises back from the brink, or in some cases, how they help game studios stay up and running. The first episode airs May 7 and is called "How Resident Evil 4 Saved Resident Evil."

You can see a funny version of this playing out with the Final Fantasy devs saying that they needed to change and to move away from Turn Based JRPG gameplay, because it was outdated and doesn't sell, so they pivoted more and more away from it, until they'd somehow pivoted all the way around to making a "Character Action" game, which is a genre so niche there's literally only one successful series in it... because I guess, that's a better selling proposition than their traditional JRPG format.
Meanwhile, traditional turn based JRPGs have continued to be some of the biggest sellers of all time throughout all the time since.

The hard truth to face is that a lot of people do bully RE5 as the starting point for the "downfall" of the series as it starts to take the series more towards an action focused, over the top action shooter with some horror themes injected in. There are some people willing to forgive it as it is still an enjoyable game (Multiplayer at least.)
Then there's 6 which is just.. an absolute shit festival of really delving into absurd action and can't decide if it wants to try and be horror (Leon/Helena) or action-drama (Chris/Piers) or just.. action (Jake/Sherry). 6 is an absolutely insufferable game to trudge through but can be made fun with a good co-op partner and a combined sense of humour.
But RE4 was really the first game to take the game in a more action direction and really ramped up the camp. Compared to the two I mentioned prior it does have its fair share of horror moments spread throughout the game, even if the more you play then the less frequent they are. But they're still there. But there are a lot of people who are ignorant either intentionally or not to the fact that RE4 was really the beginning of the series' decent into wacky action antics but sometimes you just can't take the rose tinted glasses off.
The recent Remake for RE4 while having a *lot* more of a darker atmosphere and taking itself a lot more seriously still suffers the same issues of the original and that is the action camp kicking in real early with the occasional horror bits sprinkled in.
Horror is subjective of course but people shouldn't act ignorant to the fact that RE4 is truly the wacky descent into what the series eventually evolved into, not RE5 which was in my opinion pretty inoffensive since it really stuck close to the tone of RE4.

i so badly wish we got re2 and 3 remakes on gamecube. every time i see that area from re2 in re0 it makes me want re2 in that engine so bad.
i think re2 remake is highly overrated. i played through it once with leon then once with claire, and that 2nd playthrough was so boring for me that i had no desire to ever look at it again after that, and never had the desire to play re3 remake at all, and i haven't.
if we had re2 and 3 remakes in the same engine as re1r and 0, i have no doubt i would have played through each of them at least a dozen times by now and never would have felt as bored with them as i did playing through re2 remake twice.

Honestly great video mate. Great to see these things from a business perspective, and why just making games to make the companies potentially more money can lead to bad sales, and as a result lead to the company thinking it’s not worth it. When it was then who fucked it. Was really well done and it cant’ve been easy holding back those emotions

    • @Bino8724
      @Bino8724 Год назад +4

This is not from a business perspective at all. This title of the video should be “I’m getting older and I’m mad Capcom doesn’t make games to appeal to me anymore”. In business you either adapt or die. Progress or be stagnant. Business’s are not interested in staying stagnant by appealing to the same generation of players, their job is to capture new audiences, they do appeal to older fans but that is not a always primary goal. This is not an objective video and fails to stay on point. I sympathize with this creator because he wants the same style of games he grew up with, unfortunately business wants otherwise. Capcom understand as it’s players grow up they spend less time playing video games, and let’s be real not everyone who played as a kid is a die hard fan still to this day like the creator, many of them have moved on. Capcom was not grabbing anymore market share at the time and was beginning to stagnate, RE4 did it’s job of grabbing that new market share in the industry. It literally set the industry standard of 3rd person POV games, peers in the industry applauded Capcom for that achievement all the while developing the game was a nightmare. How many new fans came to the series because of RE4? I myself am one of them, because if RE4 I am probably going to be a life long fan, it also a positive since newer fans become interested in the OG games. I disagree heavily with this video, it does not bring a objective argument.

And RE2 and 3 remakes was just bum effort on Capcoms part.
