    More than just a "sport" badge, Ford's new Explorer with the 3.5 Ecoboost delivers some driving enjoyment from behind the wheel with not much fuel penalty from the base 3.5 V6. Our only complaints are a tight 3rd row and a hefty price tag, making it one of the most expensive in the class. If you can swing the cost, you will feel as if you are driving the most premium feeling family crossover in the segment.

    This generation of Ford Explorer is my favorite. If I ever get a sport model, it has to be in black.

    You would be correct, however, when you buy a fully loaded explorer at 50 grand it has literally everything those luxury SUVs have in terms of tech and luxury features. To get the same equipment on the luxury name brands you need to pay another $5,000 as fully loaded models of the MDX and JX are $55,700. If you look at it that way, the Explorer's value proposition comes back, not to mention you get the most power with this Sport models twin turbo V6

    Great reviews!! Keep them coming!! I appreciate how you go over interior fit/finish, and not focus solely on performance and numbers. That's what sells a car to me.

    We try to show viewers acceleration as much as possible. However, we respect the fact that most of the vehicles we test are for sale so we do not abuse the cars especially if they are brand new.

    I rented the Explorer Limited for my family and parents and sister loved it . Even at night we loved the color interior lighting that you can change. The only negative things about this car I didn't like was the pedals were too close and the steering wheel felt like they took it off of the Explorer younger sibling the focus. It should be just a little bigger. The other SUV I like is the Grand Cherokee and if I for a foreign SUV it would be the Infiniti FX although all of these cars are different they are nice. So far as the Acura MDX I like the styling but could never get comfortable in that car and don't like the layout of the interior.

    Sir... you do realize the 4.0L V6 in your 1991 Explorer made 155 hp... today, 4 cyl's are producing more power than that. The 3.5L base engine in this new explorer is pushing 290 hp and this sport has 365... you sure your 91 has more power?

    I own a 2011 Explorer and it does perform even if it's not a sport. I think Ford has fixed a lot of the issues I had with my Explorer for the 2013 MY so you should be good going with the Sport. If you're more a tech guy, go with the Ford. You won't regret it. If you're more of a pure sport guy who doesn't care about fuel economy. Go with the Grand Cherokee. Cylinder deactivation causes slightly more vibrations which isn't a good thing.

  • @theredline
    @theredline  12 лет назад

    There are people that cannot and there is nothing wrong with that. Our editor in chief most likely feels the same way too and would rather get the Acura. The good news is that Ford at least offers something unique and premium to help justify the premium price tag. Do not forget that Ford also offers rebates and incentives to help bring the price down to more reasonable levels.

    This thing is a range rover with a Ford badge. I got in a 2014 Explorer Sport the other day and was blown away at the quality of the interior even years later. And the V6 Ecoboost makes merging onto the highway EXTREMELY satisfying.

    My family owns and had american cars in the past like Chevy and Ford (Mostly Ford). They lasted us +10 years with no problems, We were very happy and spent a lot of family road trips in them making a lot of great memories!! I would never ever buy a foreign vehicle. American Cars have the best engines and are the most reliable, and supports the U.S economy. American cars are the best and will always be the best!!

    Like we said, everyone has their own taste but we agree, this Explorer sport is one of the best looking SUVs in the class

  • @theredline

    If you look at this vehicle fully loaded at $50 grand, it is actually 5-10 dollars cheaper than similarly equipped luxury SUVs with the same technology

  • @theredline
    @theredline  11 лет назад

    Both vehicles compete head to head. The explorer sport is rated to get better MPG and will be just as quick as the RT Durango. Test drive both, get lease quotes and find out which one you like better yourself. We should tell you that these SUVs do not lease well, you may have a better payment when you purchase depending on the terms.

    I have a Mustang GT so the desire for a V8 is definitely there but unless the V8 is making it fast like a fast car, I don't think I would care. When he played the exhaust note it actually sounded pretty good especially for stock exhaust, I would've mistakened it for a V8 exhaust.

    Well, they aren't anything alike because today's SUV buyer does not need a truck based SUV designed to go off-road. Ford is just changing the vehicle with the times. If it was still a body on frame truck based SUV it would not sell in the numbers it does today.

    We have a 2012 Ford Explorer XLT. 50,000km (Canadian here) later and it already needed new front wheel and steering bearings. Could just be our luck but was expensive and the vehicle was at the dealership for the day. Shouldn't happen so soon on a 'family' sport utility. Also, the myFord touch system is really laggy and slow, and doesn't always sense your fingers, and the touch sensitive buttons don't always work, especially in cold weather but that was probably updated. Otherwise it's a great all-around daily commuter with a lot of practical features with sporty driving dynamics.

  • @theredline
    @theredline  12 лет назад

    Of course it doesn't. This vehicle doesn't compete with those SUVs and its price doesn't come close to being as high as well. The Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT-8 tries to compete with those vehicles more.

    I like the all-new, 2013 Ford Explorer Sport AWD with the 3.5 L Ecoboost (twin-turbo) V6 engine with 365 horsepower. Does it replace the Ford Expedition with the 5.4 L Triton V8 engine with 310 horsepower? I might be correct about it, because the Expedition may be discontinued, after the 2012 model year.

    Not a lot if you have any music on. If you have music off and the HVAC isn't screaming, yes, you can hear them. My F150 EB has a nice bit of turbo whistle inside the cabin. Now my brother-in-law, when we're drag racing, says he can hear it really well from outside the truck. They're also a bit noisier when towing.

  • @kneeyhow

    I ordered one of the Explorers in July '12 and just took delivery 3 days ago, walked off the lot owing under 40K.This is an amzaing vehicle that handles very well and will set you back in your seat when you mash the gas. If you use the paddle shifters while the gear selector is in "D" you'll get a delayed response...slipping it into "M" and then shifting through the gears shows you what this vehicle can do. I think its superior to a Range Rover based off their reliability history.

    If he's a salesman who prefers Hondas and he's trying to sell a Ford here, I can't tell. He mentioned Hondas 2-4 times throughout and didn't appear to be doing anything more than explaining what he sees.
    The Explorer Sport is pretty sweet. Anything with the 3.5L TT is pretty sweet. That engine is very powerful in any 4wd vehicle.

    Hi. Thanks for posting this video. Mind if I ask for your professional opinion? I am based from the Philippines and I own a 3-week old 2014 Ford Explorer (which I bought brand new). Current mileage is 539miles. I noticed that in some occasions (not constant), when I rev up to 3.5rpm, I smell something like exhaust fumes coming from the AC vents. At first I though that the vents are open and fresh air are going in but the air recirculation switch is turned on. I tried searching for this on the net and I found several similar complaints posted. According to those complaining, Ford did not address the problem. Do you know the cause of this and if indeed Ford have a fix for this? All the posted complaints I saw were dated Mar-Sept 2013. None that I saw dating 2014. thanks in advance and I really hope to hear from you.

    Hello. another question please if you don't mind. Can you comment on the safety features of the ford explorer especially when traveling at high speed at a highway? Have you ever come across an accident or crash caused by the vehicles road traction, control and safety performance? Im asking because I read some articles also on the net where some complaints were raised about the safety of this vehicle during high speed driving. And all of these complaints are addressed to the 2014 model (I have the 2014 model - not sure if this model was just a "repackaged" model of the 2013). Perhaps the other question I should raise is are these complaints legitimate? Meaning were these not paid by Ford's competitor to ruin the credibility of this vehicle? Again, thanks in advanced. cheers!

    Very true but does the FCW(forwardcollisionwarning) or BSD(Blindspotdetection) really justify an increase in price. When they could fix such poor quality panels for third row?
    It amazes me how so many people drive fully loaded Domestic cars, when their priced in their very own luxury divisions. If you have the means to purchase a 50k suv/cuv might as well go all out for luxury rather than get something with sub-par premium feel. Preference I guess.

    But I cannot justify paying 45-50k for a FORD when I can get into a luxury brand for that price, sure it may add a few thousand more but your getting luxury. Third row plastics is not ideal and back room is not as spacious either. But does FORD really need to dip its toes into the luxury suv market as far as pricing?
    I still am not a fan of their interiors, but their eco boost motors seem very refined which Ford really needed, like really needed to improve on.

    This is very true. I used to have a 1996 Ford Explorer 5.0L V8 and it (was supposed to) put out 215 HP (probably less because of its condition). I now have a 2007 4.0L V6 and, at first, I thought it would be a pussy engine. When I first drove it the acceleration was the same, if not more, than my 1996 V8 Explorer. However I do NOT like how Ford is NOT offering it in AWD (correct me if I'm wrong) because AWD is, in my opinion, the best setup for most vehicles.
