  • Today is day two of the solar roof project and we've decided to change the design slightly.
We've put in a ladder gap halfway along the eight panel string so that we can service everything in the future.
However this brought up some difficult challenges.

The spacing like service purposes makes sense, but I would have left the original rails continuous and not cut.

the gap will also help with ventilation behind the panels. As you probably know, a hot panel reduces efficiency.

Great job. Keep up the good work. Grounding to electro rod closer to the array would make a go to earth quicker. It doesn’t matter how good you ground it. A lightning strike will take out the lightning suppressor. But if you don’t have a good lightning suppressor, I could damage your equipment. It’s better not to be cheap and bypass. A good lightning surge suppressor light midnight solar. It’s cheaper to replace it than to replace all your equipment. Just saying. There have been several channels on here where they had it grounded properly, but didn’t have a good search suppressor and it took out there Victron inverter. The RUclips channel that experienced this lightning strike was called Tiny shiny home. You could look at their channel and confirm if you like. Keep up the good work. Stay safe.

Consider moving earth - and any other - cabling on the bottom of your alloy rail connectors. It may help in the future if you need to step on it or attach anything to it like the ladder.

Ladder (fire) gap is now required here in the Netherlands, makes it a lot easier to put out in case of a fire.

Great design choice to leave that service gap and the spanning rail. I guess there was a reason you couldn't have just continued the rails, left the gaps and bought more rails? I am a little green with envy about your whole system.

    One more thing.....
Earthing of the rails and the surge protection should be directly connectet to a ground rod, not only to the PE of the electrical system.

This brings up an interesting point I guess it's different in every country I have to check to see what the regulations state in France do you know by any chance.

      Yes, regulations might be diffrent.
But take a minute and think about where the energy goes, if a lightning strikes into your rails. I assume you don't want to let that current flow over the PE into the distribution in your house...

The ladder gaps are a good idea, but is that painted alloy tube that much cheaper than the rail? Is it worth to save that small amount of money?
I suggest to go strait with the rail. If you want to change anything at anytime you will then be much more flexible.

No the solar rails aren't that expensive however the shipping would have been over 60 euros and we would have had to wait over a week for delivery!!

I suggest to always to think of further extensions. It's a good idea to always order some pieces more than you think think you will need.
One more suggestion: Put the cables on the opposite site of the rail/tube. You than would not step on the cables by using the rails as a ladder.

Would it not make more sense to layout the last string the same as the first two? Then when you add more panels you just continue in the same way.

Don't earth to same earth as house, make it's own earth with ground rod
