Holy crap I never caught that "Zorro in Arkham" before. That absolutely blew my mind!

Morrison's need to integrate every era of comics into one coherent continuity is always cool.
One of my favorite issues, that I thought came out around this time, was the Funeral of Batman but I think that was written by Neil Gaiman so it doesn't qualify here.

White Ghost is Dushan Al Ghul, who was born centuries before Talia n Nissa, but he was never even considered by Ras to be his successor. (I think it had something to do with him being an albino or smth)

Both Mxyzptlk n BatMite are imps from 5th dimension. (That's almost certainly addressed in Morrison's run on New 52 Action Comics)

Batman meeting Joe Chill was a classic Bill Finger story. That was the story that revealed the Waynes murderer was Joe Chill.

Hurt isn't "the Devil" (DC already have one), If I remember correctly, it had to deal with the Morrison's Gotham-City being a stand in for "Hell on Earth".

i really love how Morrison had Bat-Mite's true alien form hanging over Bat-Mite's shoulder.
that spooky green-eyed, cheshire-grinned creature we see.
Morrison finally revealed the green monster over the shoulder of Bat-mite in “Batman: RIP” to be what Bat-mite actually looks like in the fifth dimension peeking out.
“I had this idea the creatures in the fifth dimension were so appalling to look at, they couldn’t show themselves to humans. It’s not because they’re bad, it’s just because if we were to look at them we’d fall apart and shit ourselves. Bat-mite very kindly disguises himself as a child-like version of Batman. What you see is the face of something in the fifth dimension.
“The imagination is the fifth dimension. I was proposing the notion the fifth dimension is in your mind.”

Great video guys! Like I said on Twitter, the grant Morrison stuff has been great and I’m kicking myself for only just reading it now! It’s all so intricate and drawn out like an epic! I think that’s the best comparison for it right now, an epic in the sense of something on the scale of the Iliad or the Odyssey. I def need to pick up the Omni soon. Can’t wait for your next video!

In The Return Of Bruce Wayne Morrison explains Dr. Hurt (Thomas Wayne) origin. It has to do with Darksied Omega Sanction (Final Crisis) and the demon Barbatos (who later appear in Snyder's Metal). You should do part 3 and 4 of The Return Of Bruce Wayne y Batman Incorporated volume 1 and 2. It's not that good, but it wraps up all the Morrison run. Thank you for remember me this comic book. I'm gonna read it again

i'm not sure if i ever shared this analogy of who Simon Hurt really is before, and what exactly is his relationship is to Bruce Wayne. please forgive me if i already have.
Dr Simon Hurt is an ancestor of Bruce Wayne's from the 1700’s. His Birth Name was in fact Thomas Wayne.
In Batman & Robin (issue #10) Dick Grayson, Alfred and Damian are walking the halls of Wayne Manor, looking over the Wayne family portraits for clues that Bruce might have left, as he was trapped back in the past.
Damian inquires about an empty space where one of the family portraits is missing.
Alfred reveals that the empty space is the only acknowledgement of Thomas Wayne, the Black Sheep of the family. Alfred continues that back in the 1760's Thomas led a sect of Devil Worshipers, who summoned an Ancient Bat-Demon of the Miagani Tribe.
In the very beginning of Batman & Robin (issue #16) we see a flashback from 1765. Thomas (Simon Hurt) is performing a Satanic ritual. A Bat-Demon appears, turning out to be the Hyper Adapter that Darkseid had sent after Bruce Wayne (in Final Crisis).
Thomas strikes a bargain with the Hyper Adapter. it gives him unnaturally long life, hence why he never aged.
Once the Black Glove finally reveals themselves, Thomas (now Simon Hurt) tries to take over the Wayne Empire, by pretending to be Bruce's father, Thomas.
A nice clue as to the level of deceit that Simon Hurt employs, in The Return of Bruce Wayne (issue #5) we see Simon Hurt staging to create fake footage of someone disguised as Martha Wayne committing murder, in his attempt to try to destroy Bruce’s parent’s reputations.
i know that you both really enjoy Morrison's Batman, and wanted to share these findings with you.

since this is is my favorite comic run i'll read it again and again. and the beauty of Morrison's Batman is each re-read, i find a new detail i'd not noticed before. things will become clearer.
NICE! i always look forward to both your and Troy's videos on Grant Morrison. 🙂

I enjoy the idea of working Batman as an ethos. But, damn, Morrisson makes it really hard to grasp for casual readers with so many way back references. So many WTF momments in the first read. Its some really heavy shit, indeed.

Finished reading everything morrison-batman. Now I'm halfway through Snyder Batman (1/3rd if you count Eternal) before I pack DC up and restart my Marvel unlimited subscription.
    Here are my thoughts:
Batman Gothic was really good, and I'm disappointed Mr. Whisper didnt make an appearance later.
Black Casebook s pretty important, and I'm glad Morrison collected those old stories. It really helped a lot of the references and most importantly, themes, make sense. It was a nice meta experience.
JLA Confidential was awesome. I really love Beryl's character as the Squire. Too bad Batman's secret Pluto base never made a reappearance :(
Batman and Son is probably my favorite of the entire run.
The Ra's al Ghul stuff was pure garbage. Dan Didio really forced this one.
Batman RIP I consider to be an extension of Batman and Son. So for me it was just as good. I really need to reread them.
Final Crisis was my third time rereading it. I have to say, I think I finally understand it. Reading Seven soldiers and Death of the new Gods is really important to understanding, but not in a direct way.
Batman and Robin was really fun. My only complaint is Morrison treats Jason Todd very inconsistently. I love Dick Grayson as Batman and I'm glad Snyder wrote some good Grayson batman stories before Flashpoint.
Return of Bruce wayne is good. It wasn't weak, but I'm not a huge fan. That said there is a story not collected in either return of bruce wayne, or the batman incorporated books that was collected in a collection called the Road Home written by morrison that details the beginning of Batman Inc.
Morrison lost me a little with Batman incorporated volume 1. I liked volume 2 more than volume 1. I dont like the focus on Batman Japan, and I dont know if I like the reveal of who the ultimate villain of the whole run was. I'm glad to see Morrison brought back OG Batwoman. I love both versions of the character.

    • @ImperiusRex
      @ImperiusRex  5 лет назад

Fantastic analysis! Glad you enjoyed the whole run! I've been excited to dive back into Morrison's run and tackle the remaining volumes. From what I recall on my first reading a couple years back, I really enjoyed the Batman and Robin books, but Inc left me a little hot and cold. I've never read Death of the New Gods, which I really should, given how much I've learned to appreciate Final Crisis.

    • @ImperiusRex
      @ImperiusRex  5 лет назад

Also- I think that the "Batman: The Return" issue was collected in Batman and Robin vol 3. I did a quick search and it appears to end that volume. Strange that they didn't include it in either Return of Bruce Wayne or the Road Home collection, but apparently that's where it's at.
