    There was just something magical for me about this era for the Bat Family in general. Characters were finally moving forward, new dynamics were forming and being explored across the whole roster, and Dick and Barbara now having to act as the "parents" to all these crazy kids in tights was so interesting to see. And I'll never forget how fun it was to see Damian as Robin interacting with the rest of the characters, especially Stephanie as Batgirl.

    Honestly, I really liked the dynamic between Dick and Damian. It helped start give Damian some actual character (after honestly a bad introduction) and gave Dick Grayson new stories to explore (such as Scott Snyder’s Black Mirror). Plus, the reverse of personality between Batman and Robin gave it a more fresh start. Of course the New 52 came along and that was scrapped, but I would really love for DC to eventually bring Dick and Damian back together even if Dick is just Nightwing. Return of Bruce Wayne was also a really fun story to see Bruce go through different time periods. Another great video and can’t wait for the Batman Incorporated video.

    Morrison is a great writer entirely in his own right, but his real talent is to take an established title, that's either been retired, or stuck in a rut of creative or objective limbo, and either rebooting it completely, (Animal Man) or ret-conning its operational canon to breath new life and possibilities into it, like with "All Star Superman" or his run on "X-Men". (Or just about any established title he's worked on) Grant Morrison never left a run on any title without enriching it, and he leaves the story arc in a way that gives the next writer plenty of options to build on or extend. I can't see him ever being out of work. Or going on long sulky sabbaticals, like some other top tier brit-bong chaos aligned comic creator (who shall remain nameless, but we all know who I mean) might choose to do. I love both of their writing, for very different reasons, but I can't understand a bloody word either of them say, and I AM British.

    Excellent video, my friend. I can't really put into words how much I love Morrison's Batman run. His understanding not just of the character but of his mythology and mythology of superheroes as a whole really shines through here. He taps into what Batman is and really should always be, a grand weird mysterious figure of the night that transcends normal human limitations. I also really appreciate his reverence and understanding of the Batman and Robin dynamic and why it's so essential. Inversing it with Dick and Damian and giving them a flying Batmobile was a brilliant, as it gave us a look into a future that could never really come to pass given Bruce Wayne can never NOT be Batman for long and I loved how much he was able to do with it in the short time he had.
    I think that's what I love the most about Grant Morrison as a comic book writer, he more than any writer today I feel gets the importance of these characters and doesn't put himself before them and instead lets the inherent absurdities of them guide his stories. That's something I feel Scott Snyder has tried to do with his Batman run but, as Robert Anton Wilson would put hit, he just hasn't unlocked that fifth circuit yet.
    I also want to get "Batman and Robin will never die tattooed on me"

    Thank you so much for this brilliant insight. I’ve read this series about four times and I really picked up new threads and ideas from your essay that I had never thought of before. It is Grant Morrison, so I’ll be able to read it for many more years without figuring it all out. But I really think you brought some key points to light that I might not have ever figured out. So thank you. This is in my top three favourite comic series ever. And no one has ever captured its brilliance as well as you have here. I hope you close out the trilogy. It might not be quite as strong as this second act, but it is a well worthy study.

    Frank Miller had Batman rise from an old folktale, to a man ascending to legend through an idealic, psychological, and metaphorical sense.
    Grant Morrison elevated Batman from superhero detective to “Bat-God”.
    And Scott Synder defined him as a concept beyond all.

    This is an amazing breakdown. I like to read some of his Batman stories but while I get parts of it, I honestly love it more when he talks about it giving detailed explanations in podcast or interviews. I sometimes feel like he writes as if it's not understandable unless you are high, and I was honestly confused during his last arc because there were characters in it like Jason looking like Prometheus that I didn't know about until that book because I haven't read his entire run.
    The basic concept of turning the dynamic duo on it's head was brilliant, but it wasn't until I watched videos like these and then went back to read those arc was I given a better picture.
    He will always be a hall of famer for Jl dark of ages, allstar alone, and I love the concept of going from batman to batgod. But I will always prefer Snyder's run. He borrowed from Grant obviously like the idea that gotham rouges changes depending on who's Batman. And he picked up the ball Grant left with Metal, but he does it in a way that feels more tangible to me. Snyder would use the perfect blend of taking old stories and ignore certain things that technically longer happened in new 52 finding a way to make it work. Rewarding people who was there from the beginning but also making it possible for me to reccomend spesific arcs to friends who aren't steeped in mythology.

    • @smashmaster521
      @smashmaster521 3 года назад +1

      And you just summed up why Scott Snyder is a better writer than Grant Morrison. Both of them use their extensive knowledge of DC lore in their stories, but Snyder never makes it necessary for you to have a Ph.D in DC lore to understand his stories.

    • @dcworld4349
      @dcworld4349 3 года назад

      @@smashmaster521 Agreed although I will say his justice league run does a better job of the same thing Snyder does, to some degree. Allstar is probably his best proof that he can do it by taking obscure characters without needing to know much about them. So he can clearly do it, but what he did with Batman in making every era canon just in a condensed timeframe. I get the appeal for him personally, we all just accept Bruce Wayne is for the most part 29-33. While he has 3 adopted teenagers that is now grown up, another bat family member that started out as a teenager and a 10 year old son.
      Even though his travels around the world started somewhere between 15-18 and ended at 21-23.
      So it's not like he created that paradox and I get wanting to play with it, and find a way to make it work. But it can be hard to follow, I'm not an expert, but I do consider myself to have above average knowledge of batman. At least compared to people who only watch movies or maybe some of the shows.

    14:46 "Barbatos is not real -- it's only the human imagination giving definition to the darkness we can never truly understand."
    ...Which is not a bad description of Snyder's version of Barbatos, seeing as how he exists in a universe that's created by human imagination.
