Just started watching your adventure. It would have been nice if you would have shown more of the towns along the canal. Would have made these episodes more entertaining and informative for new cruisers. Beautiful scenery, thank you for sharing.
I liked following the trip on Google Maps. A lot of small towns; a good way to see the USA.

I did the Erie Canal 40 yrs ago from Toronto to burmuda with my dad one summer. Great memory..and from there spent ten yrs in the Caribbean. It's addictive . Good stuff.
I can certainly relate to this series. Though not as long, I crossed the Okeechobee waterway (crosses FL from west to east) on my sailboat single handed over 7 locks with cool stops along the way. Driving and handling both ropes on the walls was interesting. Luckily, I did not have to drop the mast. Hope to, again, do the crossing westbound in the near future. Good show.

You've seen more of my hometown in the last two years than I have! Lockport (#34&35) is a great stop too - Lake Effect Ice Cream right at the locks, north side.

try thermal distillation. will work in a pinch. Same concept as in
making moonshine. just boil sea water and then by capturing the steam in
a cooling/condensing coil allowing it to drip into your water cans. Now
you have just made fresh drinking water and sea salt that can be used
to season food or salt cure meat. A simple still can be made easily for
less then $100 depending on what you already have and what you need to
buy. filter sea water before distillation if you plan on using the salt
[ items like pot with locking lid, 4ft to 6ft of copper coil, and
some fittings to attach the coil to the lid of the pot.A charcoal filter
at the end of the system never hurts. just added precaution and
improves taste of water. If your unsure that it will work test with tap
water and table salt. you'll see that it works. Hope this helps someone
Side note: if you can maintain 12vdc @ 30 amps with your electric system
a hho generator can be used to power the still . The highly
combustible fuel made from sea water by the hho generator can also be
used for cooking and will also run a small 4 stroke engine. Like a gas
power generator. An energy loop maintaining the battery bank while
running the hho generator.
Oh ! Keep going and finish the Loop.

After learning about the locks from your videos when we were in Buffalo NY a few weeks ago we went to Lockport to see the locks and went to the museum, pretty cool, thanks for the trip.

When we came through, we stopped at Brockport. There was a police chance on a stolen armored car and the armored car crashed and over turned right behind the free wall. Money came out and was blowing around, but we didn’t get any because it happened right before we got there. #timingiseverything
The locks are great most dont' get to ever see them, so keeping filming them it's relaxing. I also watch British narrowboat channels there great. : ) peace

That was our friends on Tropical Dreamer; the sailboat that you passed at 9:22 (lock 30)😊. They spent the summer on the Erie Canal as a “powerboat”.
I plan on doing the great loop next year so these videos have been very helpful

Hey Tim, Dave from Palmyra here, of course I'm still watching! Sorry to have missed you this year. Busy this summer fixing the house but it's for sale now. There is a campground about a mile west of lock 30 in Macedon where we may spend some of our summers. Otherwise, we are living about 10 miles from Port Charlotte, so if you ever go the Mississippi route to the West coast of Florida, be glad to help you out again.

Brockport would be a nice spot to stop. Its a college town. Its much nicer than Albion.
The Erie Canal is like a civilized icw
I was curious about there was one less lock but discovered more. "The original Erie Canal had 83 locks. The canal was improved and the number of locks went down to 72 locks. The canal was improved again and now there are only 35 locks."
... I'm starting to look for a sailboat to retire on ... I've been thinking about a Great Lake boat ... freshwater, low use, and used sailboats seem to be priced cheaper. The problem is getting the boat back to the Chesapeake Bay were I'm based. You have shown me the Erie Canal ... very nice ... I would like to make that trip ...
It's a lot of fun and yes, a lake boat isn;t a bad idea. Though they do tend to be smaller
And hardware is not as robust at keeping the salt water and air that you will in counter on the Chesapeake Bay! Me I am from Great Bridge on the ICW.😁🛫

Hey Tim- Question on lock etiquette- so no passing after the marker before the lock. Now loading into the lock, I see some boats will take a space closer to the rear of the lock, and then a later boat ‘passes them’ and takes a position up front. What is the order to leave the lock, the front running boats in order, or first in first out, or just whoever is ready first? Thanks!
Hey yes it is unkind to stop at the back of the lock and if so, people should pass and get a spot up front. Front boat leaves first but some smaller runabout power boats will rush out and pass you. It's usually pretty good however. Sometimes we waved bigger cruisers to pass us just because we know they run a lot faster and would prefer to not get waked later lol
I love it when you talk about costs along the way. What did it cost to use the canal ?

Are you going to be stopping in Ashtabulah as you travel lake Erie? I grew up in a town just west of there. Geneva-on-the Lake A summer time resort town on the lake. If you would, wave for me as you go by. I live in Tampa now.
When going through the locks is there a better location... up front middle rear
I gather any marinas on the system must be off on side channels. It must be difficult for marinas to attract paying transient boaters, as many locations seem to have free walls of some sort.
I am not sure there really are any marinas except for cross and odeida lakes. Most towns have local boaters tied up on the walls. Fuel is few and far between as well.
Hey, when was this? We live on Grand Island which is just across the river from tonawanda. We spent almost every weekend in the canal by Dockside. I wish I would have seen you. Would have been nice to buy you a beer and chat for a bit. Maybe next year we'll see you
