The B58 may not be a 2JZ but I'm not looking for 1000hp or anything near it. 450whp-500whp is beyond plenty for this car after proper mods. However, I do wonder about the reliability for long term both stock and modified.

    • @simonriley983
      @simonriley983 5 лет назад +3

Toyota had engine components sent to their R&D facilities in Japan for durability tests and modified them to match their standards. (It was mentioned in a Toyota presentation)
No one knows for sure if its gonna be Corolla reliable, but at the very least it's gonna last longer than a bmw lol

In the past, Supras were build on chassis from Toyota's business (Chaiser, Mark, Cressida, Aristo) sedans and had engines from them in order to showcase brand's power and pride. The only thing new Supra showcases - Toyotas greasiness and shame.
V35A-FTS could easily be factory tunned to have around 500hp without sacrificing reliability, only fuel economy and remissions. It would be one hell of a Supra on TNGA-N platform from new Crown, it would have front mid engine layout, just like the Crown. . They also could tune Aisin 10 speed for more sporty behaviour.. And no one would care that it would have v6 instead of i6 as no one cares that original R32 GTR had RB i6 were is modern once have v6es.
I am really glead that this pice of junk has very bad sales and i hope that new Nissan Z will totally outrsell this Toyota badged BMW.

T 800 I can’t agree more, the sales of the A90 are terrible and it is being discontinued in 2025. I hope Tetsuya Tada has learned a lesson here. DON’T let a competing manufacturer build your flagship sports car. I totally agree they could have retuned the 10 speed auto or used the 7speed Getrag DCT as the MK4 used the Getrag 6 speed manual.

  • @T800-b2m

There's an ECU tune for V35A-FTS that can turn it into 650 ho beast.
It great, modern and complex engine that has already proven to be reliable. Why didn't they USE it for the supra along with TNGA-N chassis from new crown? Why they have let ES to berry GS alive and cripple iS? they could Use it for new GS and for iS F. Why won't they make LC F already?
It's so painful to see how they lose bran image battle.

Great comment T800, I feel Toyota is slipping so far behind with delaying the v8 twin turbo as well. But yes my main gripe is that Toyota used a BMW engine and platform for the Supra.

@@supravworld8777 Lexus could make really cool IS and GS, but now it's to late since ES killed them. Sure that crap is profitable, but is it more profitable than GS and IS combined? It did ate their sales quit a bit and when sedans become less popular it killed them. Also it steals sales from Toyota Avalon. But even if it is as profitable then these two combined (considering development costs) they have lost brand image and marvelous cars like LS, LC and upcoming QX won't sell because of that. Also it was stupid of them to not update LS 460 for more than 10 years. Trying to sit on two chairs - is stupid, you can't be semi luxury and full luxury brand at once. And if something has Macpherson struts and fwd, it can't be a luxury car, or a sports car and it definitely can't be both.
Lexus could use TNGA-N (lightweight rwd platform found in new Toyota Crown) for new iS and GS. They could use upcoming twin turbo 2.4 i4 (320hp) as a option for the iS in addition to current 2.0 turbo AR. That tt 2.4 i4 could also be a base engine for new GS and 3.4 tt V6 (420hp) would optional. And Lexus could make iS F with boosted tt v6 and GS F with 4.6 tt V8 (650+hp) that they use in racing and promise to bring in LC F. And all of that could be paired to that amazing Aisin 10 speed.
Technology and engineering wise Japanese have been among leaders since 1980s Back than their metallurgy technology was far superior than that in other countries and only they could build long stroke engines that were high revving, due to mass production of light and strong crankshafts. They were smooth, economical and powerful even before ECUs. That's how they concarade the world. Then they showed how injection, variable valve timing, active awd systems and turbocharging is done properly and reliably. They were also first to implement these technologies in mass production of affordable vehicles. And they always use high quality materials and components for their engines and transitions along with proper, reliability conscious injenering.. But now when i want to buy proper midsize luxury sport sedan that is properly engineered (unlike germans which fall apart in 3 years and take more oil than thay do gass ride from the factory), i have no option now. And it's really a shame, since they have all ingredients for making proper luxury cars on their hands in this moment.

Perhaps, Toyota was thinking about CO2 emissions for this new engine. Yes, 500cc more is great but is or was it viable in the future life of this generation supra. BMW makes some of the best engines when it comes to torque bands. Steady peak torque way down low. Lets just let see what happens the tests do come out. It is a good alternative to the Porsche 718 and much cheaper. The pair might have a winner on their hands even against the expensive 718 GTS. 1st this isnt a 100k car and shouldn't be compared as such. 2nd this isnt an M version motor yet in this car. There might 450hp to 500hp is in the works.

I'd rather have the B58 over a toyota V6. The supra having a straight six is more important to me...Also the B58 is really making around 380 or so HP. Proven by the new supra laying down 339hp at the rear wheels (car and driver). Not a shock, the B58 has been around for a few years now in BMWs and they all put down at the wheels close to their claimed crank power. So yeah I would love for it to have been a Toyota engine but Toyota made the right choice over putting a v6 in it or developing their on inline 6 and charging us $80k - $100k for the car. oh and not to mention car and driver also did a 0-60 run in 3.8 seconds and the quarter in 12.3 @ 113mph. so the new Supra is plenty powerful and quick stock. Most videos of people driving it they seem surprised at how quick it is for its claimed power..Thats because its really making that number or better at the wheels.

I myself wouldn't want a V6 in a Supra it'd literally be nothing new and it would sound too much of the same as a 370z. And also the engine is heavier then the B58C. The B58C was probably the closest Toyota could get to a 2jz successor since they don't make inline6 engines anymore. For Toyota to make a engine just for the Supra is not good economics. The 2jz was not only in the Supra but was also in other Toyota and Lexus models. Also they used the 1JZ that was co develop with Yamaha and designed and made the 2JZ. If the Supra sells well they might look at making a engine for the A100 model using design elements of the B58 and the engine could be also used in other future Toyota and Lexus models.

This new supra shows how difficult it is to produce a car to match the Nissan GTR R35. Even the new NSX could match the GTR Nismo. The new 2020 GTR Nismo is even more superior.

Supra was never competing with the gtr nor the nsx in the first place the real competition was the 300zx(which the mk5s competition now is the 370z). Sure it was fast for straight lines and reliability but after that it sucked at everything else afterword and it even sold so badly that Toyota pulled them out of the US market years before it ceased production and lost them a bunch of money.

It's a supra doesn't matter if it mostly has BMW parts. If Toyota says it's a supra it's a supra. Plus the supras were only supposed to compete with cars like the Z's not the GTR and what Toyota still kept it as basically a 300+hp gt tourer like the mk4 was not some power house you can use for drag racing which the mk4 was not built for but what the tuners since they screwed with its engine thought it Was some power house car capable at killing everything on the strip(except the track)and is still staying to its roots like the mk4(although it isn't failing in sales like the mk4 was)
