You were apologetic at the start of the video, but IMO all your criticism was valid. Too often the uncomfortable facts abt Eurovision get swept aside because "Eurovision should be about music, not about politics", so I really appreciate you bringing up the "uncomfortable" aspects of it as well (evicting ppl forcibly, russia's human rights situation & its open military-worshipping colonialism, etc.).
Also, I don't think this fits in any category, but I still find it darkly hilarious that prior to the actual (turgid) show, russia declared that their Eurovision was "a heterosexual show for heterosexuals". Whoever made that decision (putin?) had apparently never watched Eurovision in their life. :D

In fact, he didn't need to be on stage as a presenter. He could have just done his BBC commentary from his booth. Rushing back and forth from his booth to the stage was too much. The height difference reminded me of The Brit Awards with Sam Fox and Mick Fleeetwood.

And don't forget the Hatari cameo for the jury vote announcement for Iceland. Quick, no "hello Europe, yadda yadda", and to the point in the most unexpected way. XDXD

Turin 2022 was basically the incarnation of this old joke: "Heaven is where the police are British, the cooks are French, the mechanics German, the lovers Italian and it's all organised by the Swiss. Hell is where the chefs are British, the mechanics French, the lovers Swiss, the police German and it's all organised by the Italians."
But seriously, from an Italian point of view - ALLORA, what I mainly think went wrong can be summed up with RAI trying to host ESC as if it was a local show, when Italian TV works quite the opposite way: more lax timing (a certain show comes to mind), going big on the aesthetics vs. the 'simple but effective' approach of many ESC stages in the past, which might look 'cold' in our culture, and a better acceptance of mishaps, which might even come across as endearing (as is probably the case for local TV everywhere). Add to it that ESC has only just started being part of our culture again, following a long withdrawal and a few years with not-so-great viewing ratings, and it makes sense how the organization failed to adapt to the standards, unfortunately.
That said, Turin 2022 has a special place in my heart. And so does the Huntsman ❤

Azerbaijan won during a weak year, a weak song winning in a weak year. I guess it shouldn't be a surprise tbh. Even so, nobody really know why they won, maybe the exchanging of votes between broadcasters in a corrupt manner was already happening before the EBU finally realized. Either way, compared to 2009 and 2010, 2011 was a poor year and one to forget, even 2012 was a lackluster event, only saved by an improvement in some entries and ofc Loreen winning for the first time. Tbh the same could be said about 2013 too..I guess 2014 really saved us from further disappointing years.

    • @pn29-d6u

i doubt we're ever gonna get as bad a year as 2011 song-wise (i mean germany didn't do that bad a job at hosting, yes that stage was WAY too big but that aside it was pretty good imo), but even so azerbaijan winning the televote?? did they really??? i don't think so hun. and yes 2009 and 2010 were absolutely amazing song wise (we'll ignore where 2009 was hosted, but oslo was great). 2012 gave me two of my all time fav songs (euphoria and quedate conmigo) but was meh apart from them, 2013 was just meh in general (but again gave me only teardrops). but we NEEDED 2014 to save the day good god, probably my second fav year of all time behind 2020 (yeah ik don't judge lol)

Yeah, this really shows how Turin 2022 was one of the worst hosts. Really sad as the city is quite beautiful!
Two of my fav cursed/funny moments are both from the voting phase:
In 2003 when Romania announced 9 points for Spain and in 2015 the connection errors, especially with Portugal where the hosts literally said "Suzy where are you" had me cackling back then!

The other problem with Turin’s clubs in general was the weird paying system that took AGES, as in, you had to queue once to pay for the drink, then you took that receipt to another queue where you’d be given the drink. You were in for a long, unjustified wait if you’d ordered anything less complex than a cocktail.
As well as the Huntsman, British, Irish and Australian fans scouted out the other pub-like venue in Turin, the Isle of Skye, forever made infamous in our corner by me knocking an antique violin off the wall whilst swinging a towel round my head during Konstrakta’s song 😂🎻🧼

I actually learned a lot about Eurovision history from this video! As someone who plans to go to Copenhagen and Malmö for Eurovision 2024, I never realized how fortunate it was that SVT chose the host city so quickly.
I'm surprised you didn't mention 1987 though. Since Belgium won the contest in 1986, their Dutch- and French-speaking broadcasters were supposed to collaborate, but they couldn't agree on where to host it. Eventually Brussels was chosen, and the Dutch-speaking broadcaster was so pissed at this decision that they quit organizing and left the French speakers to do it themselves.
Small correction: Frank Naef, the Eurovision supervisor who had to sit through voting antics, actually retired after the 1992 contest, not after 1991.

There is a lot to be said about Vienna 2015 in terms of production as well, the camera work was bad, there was a close-up shot of some poor spectator's boobs on for a while and they drowned Nina Sublatti in so much smoke during the final they had to turn on the wind machine sooner than planned just to make her visible again. The visuals and the postcard music save it somewhat, but that year did not live up to the great productions that came before

I currently live in Liverpool, however, I didnt at the time of the contest. But ive spoken to people who did and theyve told me one very interesting fact.
Whilst the arena was perfectly suitable, Liverpool has a very, very small gay scene (which I can testify to). Now imagine thousands and thousands of lgbt people from across Europe and further all coming and wanting a fun night out in the gay clubs.

I lived in Copenhagen in 2014 and went to one of the semi-finals. It's so funny that the location made perfect sense to locals, it's not far from the then most popular street food hall and we all biked there from the center. But for everyone else it's insane how bad the location was 😅 Even though we were kinda used to the whole biking out of town to the old shipyard part of it, it looked really half cooked and not at all like a music venue. Which is also just so on brand for Copenhagen. I guess they really did give a good presentation of the real spirit of Copenhagen, down to getting drunk in the middle of nowhere 😂

Really enjoying your videos Gabe, good job! Regarding the "cursed sun" of 2022, weren't RAI planning to do a Sanremo style chit chat presentation of each artist (that would allow time for the sun to get into place) and were told no by the EBU, that it would take too long between songs? I don't think it was that bad in the end, but it certainly was chaotic because we know what could've been. In my mind 2001 could easily have been worst stage (too big and static, dramatic stairs with no function) and also the rhyming hosts were... a choice😅

the only remotely good thing to come out of turin as a brit was the absolute 180 degree revival of eurovision in the uk (and spain too but it looks like they might be throwing it away...). legit nothing else was good about that edition - and it baffles me how sanremo can be this ultra professional, stunning event (in a tiny arena mind) and eurovision an undervalued, underproduced mess

it'd be cool to see the reverse of this video as well, what editions did all the the different parts the best. i'm sure liverpool this year would smash it 💪

it's overhated for sure, and it is the shitfest of 2011 (where if you convert to the current system azerbaijan only get 405 points, italy finish 2nd with 350, and everyone below them is within like 2 points of each other), but come on how in the name of bejba did it win?? did a song like that REALLY win the televote? i doubt it love. 2nd with the juries i kinda get, but getting more points than popular and the like is a bit weird if you ask me

Gabe going back to central København from the biggest drunk fest ( we carried one friend all the way home in the nught 😂) that fantastic Pheonix night (we knew he was winning at the pre rehersel , the crowd went wild) you are spot on. AND it rained all night as we travelled..

This was so entertaining to watch. I've been to that spot in Copenhagen for a party once, actually! Very nice place. They usually have a street food place there in summer too. But I can see it'd be suboptimal for Eurovision.
Yes, 1991 was a complete mess in terms of hosting, especially after 1990 had been so polished. (Shout-out to the interval film of 1990 though, 'Yugoslavia is like an orchestra' is probably what you say during a bad band break-up.)
As for the voting... there's this weird old edition where, a single time, they had two juries for each country, one old and one young, and they always had three countries vote at the same time by raising a card with their number. Not cursed, but if you did that today it would look absolutely hilarious. But also Bosnia in 1993 voting via radio during the siege of Sarajevo. They did what they had to do, but I'm glad that we don't usually hear screeching sounds.
And here another possibility for winner: I think the most cursed would be if a country won one year, and then stopped to exist by the following year. (I guess by historical precedent the UK would step in to host?)

TBF If Azerbaijan (and Portugal in 2017) didn't win that year that decade would have been a decade of nothing but repeats, and my pet peeve in recent eurovision is that I barely see countries win for the first time (espcially when Cyprus almost did in 2018, and 2020 was supposed have a first time winner)

2020 was so open tho that you had about 8 countries fighting for the win, granted 4 of those would have been first time winners (iceland, bulgaria, lithuania, malta) but you still had italy, russia, sweden etc.

Gosh... The SUN!!! I saw some of the stand in rehearsal footage and lots of artist were pissed cuz their shows involved the use of the sun, for example Ronela Hajati had the sun spinning at some point of the song and lots of artist design their graphics in the shape of the rainbow.

There have been many years where the results show wasn't very exciting (I mean in the very first edition they didn't have a results show at all) and especially before 1975 you could easily predict the winner early on, because of the different systems and scales in place. But I wanna give a shoutout to the first couple of years with the 1-12 scale, where they wouldn't announce the points from lowest to highest, but in running order. Like... Brotherhood of man in 1976 were first in the running order, and also one of the winners with the largest % of points available - imagine how many 12 pointers were announced straight away before getting on with the rest!

Love this video. You could say that you didn’t need to make this video because RAI did it for you! 🤣
Turin was epically awful with the Euoclub venue being so far out of the city I got lost going back to my accomodation not once BUT TWICE.
I say the Turin embraced Eurovision so much that we may as well have been at an IT conference.
Thank god for the Huntsman where I got to hang out for a bit with Brooke for a bit! ❤️

Another absolute banger video from Gabe!
Anyways, another nominee for worst hosting would have to be 1983. The hostess insisted on doing the entire show in English, French, AND German, so every transition and the voting sequence are excruciatingly long, due to her saying every sentence in all 3 languages. She stumbles on her words a bit and misremembers a lot of things. At one point, she blanks on the Norwegian conductor's name while introducing their entry and just *makes a random name up* 💀The song quality in 1983 is quite high but the show itself is kinda bad. Also, I think the stage is ugly, it looks like the inside of a toaster. But anyways, there's some more vintage ESC beef from me. #JusticeForSigurdJansen

Copenhagen was my first in-person Eurovision, so it has a lot of fond memories for me. The ‘arena’ definitely had… uh… atmosphere as you say. We saw the family final, and getting back was the wettest I’ve ever been. To avoid crowd conflicts with people already showing up for the final, they shipped us back (literally, on tourist barges) and it was tipping down. Still, I’ll never forget seeing Conchita live :)

I don't know if this could have been helped from the camera crew but during Montenegro 2022 there was a shot where perfectly in the center three people got up to leave during her performance (rude but if you have to tinkle you have to tinkle). She was barely in the shot the main focus was these people leaving. The problem you can blame them for however is that was the clip that was used in every single promotional material for Montenegro that year.
